00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Welcome back to Black and Unsolved, true crime chronicles on the NBG Podcast
00:00:06 --> 00:00:11 Network, where we shed light on unsolved mysteries within the black community.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:19 I'm your host, A.I. Jackson, and today we're delving into the case of Keith
00:00:19 --> 00:00:24 Warren, a young man with a bright future whose untimely death was ruled a suicide
00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 under suspicious circumstances.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:32 But was it suicide, or did authorities rush to cover something up?
00:00:32 --> 00:00:38 We'll follow Keith's family's decades-long pursuit of justice and explore the
00:00:38 --> 00:00:45 chilling details that make this case one of the most disturbing mysteries in recent history.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:52 Keith Warren was an 18-year-old high school graduate from Silver Spring, Maryland.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:58 He had recently graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1986 and had plans
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 to start college that fall.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:05 Keith was known for his warmth, intelligence, and positive outlook on life.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:13 On Tuesday, July 29, 1986, Keith received a call from friends and went to hang
00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 out with them, but never returned home.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:23 The next day, July 30, 1986, his mother, Mary Cooey, called the Montgomery County
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 Police to report him missing.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:30 She was informed by the police that unless he was an invalid or on medication,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 she would have to wait 48 hours to file a report.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:41 But on the morning of July 31st, 1986, Keith's life would come to an abrupt and tragic end.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:47 The aftermath of his death revealed a troubling story of possible corruption.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 Negligence, and a family's relentless search for truth.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:58 Keith's body was discovered, hanging from a tree in a wooded area near his home.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 The scene was jarring and raised immediate questions.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:07 Keith was found in clothes that his mother, Mary Cooey, didn't recognize,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 and his shoes appeared far too large for him.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:16 Despite these unusual details, Authorities arrived and quickly ruled his death a suicide.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 They did not conduct a thorough investigation.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:26 From the beginning, there were irregularities. The police didn't treat the area
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 as a potential crime scene.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:32 Critical evidence was ignored, and the scene was left unsecured.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:38 Shockingly, instead of informing Mary directly, authorities allowed her to hear
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 the devastating news from a neighbor.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:44 From the moment police arrived on the scene, things were mishandled.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:51 Within hours, authorities ruled Keith's death a suicide, mostly based on a comment
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 made by a bystander at the scene, so they decided no autopsy was needed.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:02 This was in direct violation of Maryland state law, which mandates autopsies
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 in cases of unattended or suspicious deaths.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:13 Skipping this crucial step deprived the family of key evidence and raised immediate red flags.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:18 Keith's mother, Mary, knew her son would never take his own life.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:23 In the days leading up to his death, he had shown no signs of distress or depression.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:30 She began questioning the police's conclusions, sensing they were too quick to close the case.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:34 As she dug deeper, more troubling questions emerged.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:40 Keith's family had to accept the ruling of suicide, despite their mistrust of the findings.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 Determined to find out what really happened to her son, Mary started her own investigation.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:51 Her suspicions were validated six years later when she received an anonymous
00:03:51 --> 00:03:58 package on her doorstep that would turn her grief into a full-blown crusade for justice.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:03 Inside the package were photographs from the scene that contradicted official reports.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:10 Keith's body position looked staged, almost as if someone had placed him there deliberately.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:14 The ligature marks didn't match those typically found in cases of suicide by hanging.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 While the police acknowledged to the Warren family's private investigator that
00:04:19 --> 00:04:25 the photos were theirs, they had no idea how they ended up on Mary Cooey's doorstep.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:30 These photos had never been shared with the family, raising questions about
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 what else might have been withheld.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:37 The package also included documents and copies of police reports that didn't
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 match the official story.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:45 Strangely, some pages were missing, suggesting that critical information had
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 been redacted or withheld.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:52 One of the most disturbing elements of this case was that Keith's body had been
00:04:52 --> 00:04:57 sent to Colin's funeral home to be embalmed before his mother even knew he was dead.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:04 This highly unusual step meant that any chance of a second autopsy or toxicology
00:05:04 --> 00:05:09 testing was gone. It was almost as if someone wanted to make sure no one could
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 look deeper into the true cause of his death.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:17 Mary's investigation led her to seek out independent forensic experts who found
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 disturbing inconsistencies.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:25 According to these experts, the marks on Keith's neck were inconsistent with
00:05:25 --> 00:05:30 hanging and suggested that he might have been dead before being suspended from the tree.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:35 They pointed out that the positioning of his body and specific bruises could
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 indicate restraint and perhaps most confounding of all.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 His feet were touching the ground.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:46 Stretched out in front of him, the small tree bending over showing it was unable
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 to support his body weight.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 All of these raised concerns that his death was staged to look like a suicide.
00:05:53 --> 00:06:00 Other unusual details emerged. For example, the clothes Keith was wearing did not belong to him.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 And police failed to explain how he ended up in this unfamiliar attire.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:09 The clothes that Keith was wearing when he left home are not the same as those
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 on his body in the photos.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 While his signature brown boots were returned to his family,
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 he was not wearing them in the photos when his body was found.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:24 Witnesses also reported seeing his body transported to the scene in a van before
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 it was placed in the tree.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 A claim authorities ignored and refused to investigate.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:34 As Mary uncovered more, she began to wonder if Keith's death might have been
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 covered up by someone within law enforcement or local officials.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:43 There were whispers that Keith may have witnessed something he shouldn't have,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:48 and rumors circulated that local individuals with power might have been involved.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:54 But despite mounting evidence and new questions, the Montgomery County Police
00:06:54 --> 00:06:59 Department refused to reopen the case or provide further answers.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:03 There were even more troubling revelations about the police handling of Keith's case.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:09 According to documents that Mary uncovered, officers involved in the investigation
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 were allegedly uncooperative when it came to providing additional information
00:07:13 --> 00:07:16 or answering questions from her legal team.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:21 Key records, including communications among officers, were withheld,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 with authorities citing lost or misfiled documentation.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:31 Suspiciously, multiple witnesses who could potentially shed light on Keith's
00:07:31 --> 00:07:35 final hours or the events leading up to his death reported being intimidated
00:07:35 --> 00:07:40 by unidentified individuals who discouraged them from coming forward.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:45 This raised the disturbing possibility that there was an intentional cover-up
00:07:45 --> 00:07:48 orchestrated to prevent the truth from surfacing.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:54 Mary also discovered that some officers who were part of the investigation were
00:07:54 --> 00:07:58 later promoted within the police department, leading her to suspect that individuals
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 involved were being rewarded for their silence.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:07 As time passed, various theories circulated about what may have really happened to Keith.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:12 Some speculated he may have witnessed a crime or incident involving powerful
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 people in the community.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:19 Others wondered if his death was a targeted act of racial violence.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:23 The way his body was positioned echoed historical lynchings,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 a haunting reminder of a painful past in America.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:33 Given the peculiarities of his case and the inconsistencies in the investigation,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:40 many believe that Keith was killed and that authorities were complicit in covering it up.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:45 One of the more troubling theories revolves around local law enforcement's possible
00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 involvement in the drug trade during the 1980s.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:54 There was widespread speculation that Keith may have stumbled upon information
00:08:54 --> 00:08:58 that implicated certain individuals, making him a target for those who wanted
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 to keep their operations concealed.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:06 Over three decades later, Keith Warren's case remains an unsolved mystery.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:11 His mother, Mary Cooey, never gave up her fight for the truth.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:16 Many community organizations stepped in to help them financially and emotionally.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:24 In 1994, Keith's family and community raised enough money to have his body exhumed
00:09:24 --> 00:09:27 and an autopsy performed. Pathologist Dr.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:34 Isidore Mihalakis performed the autopsy and did not find a medical basis for the finding of suicide.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:39 But law enforcement continued to resist reopening the investigation,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:43 leaving many unanswered questions and a family desperate for closure.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:51 Keith's mother, Mary, spent the rest of her life fighting for the truth in her son's case.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:56 She started letter-writing campaigns, published pamphlets,
00:09:56 --> 00:10:00 contacted every county and state official there was to contact,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:06 and even shared Keith's story on unsolved mysteries multiple times.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:12 After Mary passed away in 2009, Keith's sister Sherry immediately stepped up
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 and worked just as tirelessly.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:20 Recently, 30 years after Keith's death, Sherry and her community have accomplished
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 one of her mother's goals.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:28 In March 2024, Sherry received word that there was nothing in any of Keith's
00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 reports to medically support a finding of suicide.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:38 As such, the Office of the Medical Examiner of Maryland is going to officially
00:10:38 --> 00:10:42 reclassify Keith's manner of death to undetermined.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:49 The war for justice for Keith is not over, but this battle, mercifully, has been won.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:55 Next steps will include approaching Montgomery County with the medical examiner's findings.
00:10:55 --> 00:11:02 As we close this episode, remember that cases like Keith Warren's don't just
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 impact the families involved.
