00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 a nice, easy, relaxing event for women and men who are interested.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:24 And then I see, I mean, we have a couple of things. So for the first time,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:30 the first weekend in October, there's there's an event that will be at the campground called weed stock.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:38 So so from what I hear, it's got to be a whole bunch of people smoking weed all week and long.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 And then I guess they have music and they have entertainment and,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 you know, all that stuff. So I'm I'm curious to see what that's going to look
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 like. You probably won't remember that weekend at all, man. Oh,

00:07:22 --> 00:07:26 like, Dave, I can you not if there was a Delaware Entertainment Hall of Fame,

00:07:29 --> 00:07:35 I mean no you know no no doubt because like and and and Dave Dave makes it out the house more than I do,

00:08:21 --> 00:08:26 time How would you describe and Latrice beyond the stage.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:32 Oh, Ann Latrice is, well, Ann Latrice is a stage name.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:39 So I am a separate entity outside of that. I am Annie. I am Anne. I am mom.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 I am soon to be wife type, you know, but I'm just a cool down to earth individual.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:50 I love my people and I just want to see people thrive in anything that I can
00:08:50 --> 00:08:53 do to pour into people, to help them out.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:56 That's, that's what I'm supposed to do. So that's who I am.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:01 Understood. So, you know, I guess with 17 years of experience.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:08 So so when I think about your longevity, you know, in my mind,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 it's OK, like she loves what she does.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:15 Because when you first started, could you have ever realized that you would
00:09:15 --> 00:09:20 have been performing in front of hundreds, thousands, you know,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 almost touring like a major rock band?
00:09:24 --> 00:09:27 You know, could you imagine like 17 years ago? Can you imagine the success,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 the longevity, the consistency?
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 Like, could you ever imagine that?
00:09:32 --> 00:09:37 Absolutely not. Like I said, in the beginning, I was a karaoke singer.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:41 You know, I was at different karaoke bars, winning different karaoke competitions.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:45 And I could always sing, but never really took it seriously like that,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:52 you know. But to say 17 years now that this would be what it is, it's like, wow.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:58 Like, wow. Like, that's all you can really say is wow, because it is still about
00:09:58 --> 00:10:02 having fun and making people enjoy, you know, entertaining people.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:05 But that's what it was about in the very beginning, you know,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 and like I tell people all the time, especially people just starting out and,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:11 you know, grinding, trying to get, you know, their feet off the ground.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:16 You know, you got to take those gigs that feel like they're not really paying
00:10:16 --> 00:10:22 you anything because you got to starve a little bit. Right. You know what I'm saying?
00:10:22 --> 00:10:26 And once you do that, you got to keep putting yourself out there.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:30 It's a hustle. It is a constant 24-hour hustle.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 Just because i've been 17 years doesn't mean it comes easy you know every day
00:10:35 --> 00:10:38 i still gotta fight for to make sure i'm still relevant.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:44 Like in this world anyway but you know 17 years now nobody could ever told me
00:10:44 --> 00:10:48 that this is where we'd be and this is what be going on being flown out to out
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 the country to anguilla for private parties oh yeah you know,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:57 the soul train cruise which we've been doing here recently you know it's just
00:10:58 --> 00:11:03 nobody could ever told me doing cover songs and singing an abandoned Delaware would,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:06 take me places that I dreamed of. Gotcha.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:11 Now, I guess taking it back 17 years, so not everybody may know your story.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:14 And actually, I kind of forgot about the karaoke part of it.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:21 So how did you transition from, you know, winning all these karaoke competitions,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:26 to, and I'll just say when I first became aware of you and met you performing
00:11:26 --> 00:11:30 with Best Kept Soul, like how did that transition happen?
00:11:30 --> 00:11:34 So like I said, I was doing a karaoke. And in that scene, you know,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:38 you were in Iraq with a lot of different people. I always credit my baby Tracy A.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:42 She was one of the people that was always at karaoke. And she was telling me
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 about the live band that she had, you know.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 And she said, you know, you really need to do more with this.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 So I got linked up with Boogie and Kyra, who were the original founders of the
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 band, along with Lamont.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:59 And I met them in the basement one the week after that. And the rest is BKS history.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:04 So that's the transition. It wasn't easy because being karaoke,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 you are conformed to the song.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 The track is the track. It's not going to change.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 It don't matter if the bass player playing the wrong note.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:17 It's the same. It's going to be consistent, you know? So doing with the band,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:20 learning what the one was, I'm like, what the hell? What do you mean coming
00:12:20 --> 00:12:23 on the one? They all sound the same, right? Yep, that's right.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:28 So, you know, it was a lot of different lingo that I had to learn.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:33 And then understanding that it's a difference between singing and entertaining.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:39 Because you got people that can sing. Yeah. But lackluster when it comes to,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 you know, entertaining the crowd.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:45 Like you got to keep people's engagement like and we're not just talking about
00:12:45 --> 00:12:48 one song for karaoke we're talking about now three hours,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:54 you know one hour sets so it's a lot so you gotta you take on a lot you know
00:12:54 --> 00:12:58 but the determination and the pc and the people enjoying themselves,
00:12:58 --> 00:13:02 it gives you the it gives you that go you don't want to stop yeah we're on the
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 merry-go-round now we can't get off yeah,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:10 for real now so i i guess one question i always had too is you know a lot of
00:13:10 --> 00:13:14 times when we go to performances and especially if they're,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:19 and I won't say smaller venues but venues that may be more intimate you know
00:13:19 --> 00:13:23 a lot of times it always feels like the the performers kind of looking at you
00:13:23 --> 00:13:25 looking in your direction,
00:13:25 --> 00:13:30 when you're on stage are you like do you kind of focus in on different people
00:13:30 --> 00:13:35 or you know like like in in my mind I always think about like what
00:13:36 --> 00:13:40 was that show where the guy could understand what women were saying oh what
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 women want yeah what women want,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:46 you know i always think about that like you know while you're singing on stage
00:13:46 --> 00:13:50 are you kind of talking to yourself about like what you're seeing in the audience
00:13:50 --> 00:13:54 and what's happening and who's you know oh so-and-so came to support me or you
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 know looking for people like
00:13:55 --> 00:13:59 when when you're singing your songs and entertaining what you know.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:03 What is it you know what are you looking at what What are you thinking?
00:14:05 --> 00:14:10 Well, it's funny because I've become known and accustomed to people seeing me with these on.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:15 The shades? So these have become my shades. I wear my shades.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 If you come to any of my shows, I always have shades on.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:22 For one, I never want anybody to know what I'm looking at. Okay. But you would ask that.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:27 And then it gives me the opportunity to gauge. And I can really see what's going
00:14:27 --> 00:14:30 on without actually having people know what I'm focusing on.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:37 You'd be surprised some of the things you see on the stage. and then try not to let it distract you,
00:14:37 --> 00:14:43 you know Dwayne Dwayne and I I mean I slap him so much during a gig like bro did you see that like
00:14:44 --> 00:14:48 you know it's just I'm never focused on one thing and it always depends on what
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 I'm singing where my mind may go
00:14:50 --> 00:14:55 you know but I'm always looking around I and most of the time I have my eyes
00:14:55 --> 00:14:59 closed to be honest oh really even with the glasses on okay yeah
00:14:59 --> 00:15:02 it's been times that people have literally came up to me while I was singing
00:15:02 --> 00:15:05 and I didn't know they were there because I had my eyes closed and I opened
00:15:05 --> 00:15:08 my eyes and I get scared like where did you come from but,
00:15:08 --> 00:15:12 yeah you know well so so I guess what that said,
00:15:13 --> 00:15:22 like what's the weirdest strangest oddest thing that you have seen while you're
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 like performing on stage,
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 Oh, man, I could go to jail.
00:15:32 --> 00:15:39 I mean, listen, I've seen things from men dancing with their wives,
00:15:39 --> 00:15:46 winking at their side chicks or grabbing another chicks behind or like, I mean, you see so much.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:50 Like I tell you, I know Dwayne's arm is sore because I see that,
00:15:51 --> 00:15:54 like, you know, but I would have to say stuff like that.
00:15:54 --> 00:15:59 And then it was my fondest memory is when we did this event for this preacher,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:04 and his wife gets up and she says all these amazing words about him.
00:16:04 --> 00:16:08 We just went on a break and, you know, she's introducing him to come up and
00:16:08 --> 00:16:13 he gets up there and he says, oh, man, where's that singer at?
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 I want to throw my boxers at her.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:27 I was like sir right pastor right me you know but i mean i guess he was he that's what he wanted to do.
00:16:30 --> 00:16:35 Yeah yeah you you made him feel the spirit yeah i mean he felt the spirit he
00:16:35 --> 00:16:41 had to take his pants off okay do you pastor yeah all right and then am i so
00:16:41 --> 00:16:45 my last question before i let my partner, Deacon, Deacon Dave.
00:16:45 --> 00:16:50 And, and, you know, this is a question I usually try to ask all our guests.
00:16:50 --> 00:16:55 What advice would you give to up and coming, let's say struggling,
00:16:55 --> 00:17:00 starving artists who maybe look up to you and they want to turn their passion
00:17:00 --> 00:17:04 into a sustainable business, or at least, you know, have a,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:07 a consistent career doing what they love?
00:17:08 --> 00:17:12 Well, the word right there, consistency, is a piece that I would tell them that
00:17:12 --> 00:17:17 is, because, you know, in the beginning, it's always going to feel like nobody's
00:17:17 --> 00:17:20 listening, nobody's watching, nobody's catching on to what you're doing.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:25 But that stuff takes time, because you'll see, give it a moment,
00:17:25 --> 00:17:28 but you have to be consistent. Repetition is key.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:35 Don't give up. It's easy to give up. When you feel like the struggle is just
00:17:35 --> 00:17:38 that hard, that's when it's a great breakthrough, to be very honest with you.
00:17:39 --> 00:17:44 Like I said, me branching out and doing my own. Now I have my own LLC,
00:17:44 --> 00:17:47 which I curate shows under my LLC.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:52 And at first, you know, it's like people not catching on. But even with me being
00:17:52 --> 00:17:56 17 years, I still have to get people to buy back into me, you know,
00:17:56 --> 00:17:59 because I'm branching out from a unit.
00:18:00 --> 00:18:04 And now I'm a separate entity. So you find that, you know, people know Best
00:18:04 --> 00:18:07 Kept Solo, but people may not know Ann Latrice.
00:18:07 --> 00:18:11 Right. You know, so it's like, okay, now I got to get you guys to buy back into
00:18:11 --> 00:18:16 me as a solo, you know, and understand that, you know, I'm going to give you
00:18:16 --> 00:18:20 me times 10 because now this is my show. Right.
00:18:20 --> 00:18:25 You know, I'm not conforming to a box where I'm hired to do this for a specific individual.
00:18:25 --> 00:18:29 Now I'm curating my own shows, my own liberties, my own freedoms,
00:18:30 --> 00:18:35 you know, and spaces that make me feel more creative as an artist and inviting
00:18:35 --> 00:18:37 people into those spaces.
00:18:37 --> 00:18:39 My stage is always open to anybody.
00:18:40 --> 00:18:43 People always tell me, what if somebody gets up there and sounds better than
00:18:43 --> 00:18:48 you? Baby, I live by the motto of what's for me is for me and what's for you is for you.
00:18:48 --> 00:18:52 God, you can't take nothing away from me and I can't take nothing away from you.
00:18:52 --> 00:18:57 So if I was the vessel that you needed to get that, then that's my job.
00:18:58 --> 00:19:02 So I just operate differently. But I'm a resource.
00:19:02 --> 00:19:06 People can plug into me. If I have knowledge, I will share it.
00:19:06 --> 00:19:09 If I don't, we'll find it together. That's just how I am.

00:20:01 --> 00:20:03 have been able to identify. with you as.
00:20:05 --> 00:20:09 One thing I will say here, you know, and, you know, I've known you for a long
00:20:09 --> 00:20:13 time, and I remember the first time I ever watched you sing,
00:20:14 --> 00:20:17 I was like, gosh, that girl can sing.
00:20:18 --> 00:20:21 And, you know, now, one thing, and you said it earlier,
00:20:22 --> 00:20:27 there's singers, there's performers, you know, there's people that manages,

00:22:01 --> 00:22:04 in my mind i'm like i mean i did all right but what is really going on here

00:22:30 --> 00:22:35 And I had asked her about helping me coordinate a Whitney Houston tribute.
00:22:36 --> 00:22:39 And that was in 2000 and... Oh, where were we at?
00:22:41 --> 00:22:46 It was 10 years ago. It was exactly 10 years ago. I can't believe it was that
00:22:46 --> 00:22:53 long ago. I can't believe it was that long ago. So that year we did two tributes.
00:22:53 --> 00:22:58 I did one in February and I did one in August. Right. And they were both sold
00:22:58 --> 00:23:03 out down at the Queen Theater in the big part, not the little part. We sold it out.
00:23:04 --> 00:23:09 Not once, but twice. But I tell people it's significant for me when I do a Whitney
00:23:09 --> 00:23:13 Houston tribute. It's either going to be in February, which is in honor of her
00:23:13 --> 00:23:16 death, or August, which is her birth month.
00:23:16 --> 00:23:19 And it's six months apart. So it's a good time space.
00:23:20 --> 00:23:24 But we did those. And ever since then, I've been trying to do it again.
00:23:24 --> 00:23:30 It just never seemed like the right timing. So fast forward to last year, I had a stroke.
00:23:31 --> 00:23:35 In July of last year, which had me paralyzed on my right side.
00:23:35 --> 00:23:42 And I was just going to bring that up next, but, but, but it all, but it all ties in.
00:23:44 --> 00:23:50 And, and that was just a, a reality check for me as far as what am I really
00:23:50 --> 00:23:51 doing with life right now?
00:23:51 --> 00:23:56 You know, so it took me on a whole down deep rabbit hole of things that I need
00:23:56 --> 00:23:58 to change and things that I want to do.
00:23:58 --> 00:24:03 So I reached out to Richard Blackwell, who is at Wilson's Lounge in Jersey,
00:24:04 --> 00:24:07 and I asked him about, you know, a space to do my Whitney Houston tribute.
00:24:08 --> 00:24:12 And he actually introduced me on my second Whitney Houston tribute at World
00:24:12 --> 00:24:15 Cafe Live. So I have a good relationship with him.
00:24:15 --> 00:24:18 And he was like, you don't have to sell me. Let's get it. Let's make it happen.
00:24:19 --> 00:24:23 So that was in February. So this has been in the works for a minute.
00:24:23 --> 00:24:27 And, you know, just now it's coming next week, week after next,
00:24:27 --> 00:24:30 something like that. I don't know. Times is all coming together.
00:24:30 --> 00:24:33 I'm retired now. I don't know what day is what day no more. But.

00:27:51 --> 00:27:56 i now am a thousand percent trusting in god and i understand what that means
00:27:56 --> 00:28:02 it means that But I don't have to worry nor wonder about anything.
00:28:03 --> 00:28:08 As long as I'm doing my due diligence and doing what I'm supposed to do and
00:28:08 --> 00:28:11 he is satisfied with what's going on.
00:28:12 --> 00:28:16 I'm going to reap all the benefits of that. Stepping out on faith,
00:28:17 --> 00:28:19 I worked for McDonald's for 25 years.
00:28:20 --> 00:28:24 25 years. People thought I was crazy when I said I would stop working.
00:28:25 --> 00:28:31 God, I don't worry nor wonder. I started the LLC for a reason.
00:28:32 --> 00:28:39 So that way I would have income, you know, and able to make up for whatever loss I may have.
00:28:40 --> 00:28:45 But to be honest, I haven't been working since May and I feel great.
00:28:45 --> 00:28:48 I don't worry. I don't worry. My bills are paid. My kids are taken care of.
00:28:48 --> 00:28:51 The house is cool. I still got a car.
00:28:54 --> 00:29:00 God provides, man. God definitely provides. And I sing at my church.
00:29:01 --> 00:29:04 I became a member of my church. It's almost been a year now.
00:29:05 --> 00:29:09 And I do first Sundays at my church. I sing and I'm actually been in the process
00:29:09 --> 00:29:10 of getting our choir together.
00:29:11 --> 00:29:14 So it's taken me on a lot of different directions.
00:29:15 --> 00:29:20 I'm able to now utilize the skills that God has given me because I'm not boggled
00:29:20 --> 00:29:22 down with a whole bunch of work.
00:29:22 --> 00:29:27 You know, I dedicated so much to McDonald's and it's ultimately probably what
00:29:27 --> 00:29:30 gave me, made me have a stroke, to be honest, because I was ripping and running
00:29:30 --> 00:29:33 and running and ripping and going from work to a show and
00:29:34 --> 00:29:38 back to work and, you know, and constantly, constantly, constantly, constantly moving.
00:29:38 --> 00:29:45 And now the clarity that I have is stop, rest, recalibrate.
00:29:46 --> 00:29:52 Everything you have is in front of you. Now you can see it. Go get it. Yeah. Yeah.
