Hosts Dave and Leonard cover the week’s top stories: Kirk Franklin’s tense exchange with a heckler after a rain-canceled Philadelphia show, reactions to new films and comedy, and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” climbing to No.1 on the R&B digital chart thanks to renewed interest from his biopic.
They also take a deep dive into Arsenio Hall’s most memorable TV moments, share personal takes on summer plans and favorite hot-weather foods and drinks, and close with listener interaction and show sign-off.

00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 Hanging out with my partner, Mr. Leonard Young. What's going on, sir?
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 Hey, Dave. Everything is good. This is Leonard Young, CEO of National Black
00:01:21 --> 00:01:28 Guide, DelawareBlack.com, Black Media Specialist, all-around good guy. How goes it, Dave?
00:01:28 --> 00:01:34 Man, trying to stay cool, man. It's supposed to be a hot week this week, man. I know. Yeah.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 Stay inside. Yeah, stay inside. That's the only thing good about being at work,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 man. You know, I ain't got to worry about the heat, you know?
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 Yeah, but other than that, everything's good. Short week. You know,
00:01:47 --> 00:01:50 we got 4th of July coming up. You got any plans?
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 Work well let me ask this since uh i just don't know do people have all friday
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 or is friday like i think that they're celebrating the holiday on friday i know
00:02:00 --> 00:02:06 our the state is celebrating because the fourth is on friday i mean saturday so,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:12 um so we're off on friday okay so what you got for friday anything special,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:19 i don't know man uh you know all right well good come on here we go Come on down to the campground.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 We have a music bingo from 6 to 8. Come on down.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 6 to 8 on Friday.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:27 You ain't coming.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 This is what's so funny. Drive an hour and a half, come down there to hang out
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 from 6 to 8. Okay. All right.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 I guess I need to get down there early to make my time better, right?
00:02:41 --> 00:02:46 Well, Dave, don't act like you ain't driven an hour to Philly to go to dinner
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 and then come on back down. Yeah, I know.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 But that's a good plug for everything. Music Bingo, who's... Do you guys...
00:02:54 --> 00:03:00 Is this a guy who usually does bingo with you guys? Yeah, yep. DB Nice. Okay.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 All right. If you guys have never played Music Bingo before,
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 it's pretty fun. It's a little bit different.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:12 You know, instead of calling numbers, they play new music, and you have to look for it on your card.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 Some DJs do it a little bit different. You know, they don't tell you the name
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 of the song. You have to know the name of the song. Oh, really?
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 Yeah, I think that makes it a little more challenging when you don't,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:28 you know. But the songs are very popular songs, and you have to know the song.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 But then some DJs will tell you, you know, they'll play a little bit of the
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 song, and then they'll tell you the song, and you have to look for it.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 But I like music bingo. Tim does music bingo, too, actually.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:45 Come on, Dan. Hold on, does Tim have all, like, the cars and the little dials?
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 Yeah, because I've helped him with it a couple times. Oh, really? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:57 Good to know. Yeah, yeah. But, yeah, yeah, if you guys ain't doing anything, that's a good look.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:01 Yeah, Dave, if you're not doing nothing, that's a good look.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 Yeah, I'm sure that's a busy travel day too, right?
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 Dave, if you're not doing anything, you have off the whole day.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:14 Okay, all right. I'll ride down with you and ride back up with you, dude.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 Are you coming back then? No, you're not coming back then. I'm not coming down.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 And I'm going down early in the morning.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 But come on down, Dave. Yeah.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:27 Okay. Anyway, y'all hear that? He said, y'all come on down. Okay. All right.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 So other than that, you got anything else going on?
00:04:31 --> 00:04:38 No. I think I was telling you I saw a scary movie, Six Over the Weekend. I mean, pretty funny.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:44 Yeah, pretty funny. Definitely one of those movies where some stuff is funny,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 some stuff is dumb funny and some stuff is like okay.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:54 They, you know, I definitely wanted to support the Wayne brothers because,
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 you know, scary movie was kind of originally their thing.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 And I mean, overall, I liked it. I definitely kind of want to see it again because,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:08 you know, scary movie is so slapstick that like it's almost like every second
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 something's happening.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:14 So you may be laughing at one thing and miss another thing. So do kind of want
00:05:14 --> 00:05:19 to see it the second time just so I can catch all the jokes and the movie references.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:24 I was going to say, do you think you caught all the movie references or do you think you missed a few?
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 So I think I caught a majority of them.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 I really do think I caught a majority of them. One of them that I was actually
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 surprised to see, but I caught it because I saw it.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:43 Have you seen the Demi Moore movie where she takes this pill and she kind of
00:05:43 --> 00:05:50 evolves out of her own body into like a younger, perkier body? No.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:55 What was that called? You remember? No. In fact, let me, one time I was watching
00:05:55 --> 00:05:59 it on, well, Dave, you probably won't want to watch it because half the time
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 she has no clothes on. She's like completely nude. Oh, yeah.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 I hate those kind of memes. Yes, I know you do. Yeah.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 In fact, let me just see. Yeah. What's the name of it?
00:06:10 --> 00:06:14 Oh, it's called The Substance. Substance? Yeah.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 Have I ever heard of that? Yeah. What year did that come out?
00:06:18 --> 00:06:23 It says 2024. 24 and it says the substance,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:29 okay it follows demi moore who was fired by her producer due to her age and
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 uses a black market drug that creates
00:06:32 --> 00:06:38 a younger version of herself with unexpected side effects so oh okay,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:45 so it's a thriller or or it's a what would you classify it,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 Maybe like a sci-fi. Sci-fi. Yeah. Okay. All right.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:56 I'm trying to see if it has a Rotten Tomatoes score, but I don't even know where to look for that.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:00 Okay. Rotten Tomatoes. Let me just see.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:06 Okay. So the tomato meter, it got an 89.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:13 Oh. And the popcorn, yeah, the popcorn meter got a 76. That's not bad. That's not bad at all.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:19 What did the scary movie get? What did you say? Oh, geez.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:24 Let me just take a look real quick. You know, luckily the Wayne brothers probably
00:07:24 --> 00:07:28 don't care about the tomato meter or the popcorn.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:34 Take a wild guess of what the score was.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:42 In the 20s? Exactly. It said between 20 and 27% score. Yeah, there you go. Yeah.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:48 Wow. But they did that to their first movie, too, if I'm not mistaken. It was low.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:53 But, you know, a lot of people went to see it. And I think they already,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:56 from what I understand, didn't they already make their money back?
00:07:59 --> 00:08:04 Well, no, Scary Movie 1 had a 52%. But that's not great.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 No, but I mean, it's twice as good as... Yeah, well...
00:08:08 --> 00:08:13 But this is the test, because I think Scary Movie 2 was the best one.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 And still my all-time favorite.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 Let me see what Scary Movie 2 got.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 And then we can move on because I know the audience don't care about us.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:31 Oh, my goodness. Scary Movie 2, 13%. Okay. Oh, my God. Yeah. Jesus.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:38 Okay. Well, so much for that. Okay. So, Dave, now we know we can't recommend
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 it. We just tell people, go see it at your own risk.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:48 Yeah. Well, you know, that's, you know, of course, the culture might have something to do. Look,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:53 we recommend to the delegation to go see it.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 All right. So let's go ahead and get ready to go into the show.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 Oh, I just want a PSA moment here.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:11 I had to apologize about last week's show. And I know I dropped off at the end of the show.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:16 My phone did the weirdest thing. I don't know if anybody's ever had this issue, but...
00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 You know, we had some technical difficulties and it was on my end.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:25 And that's why you didn't hear me at the end of the show, even though really
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 what happened was Leonard muted me.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:34 But he can so he can, you know, you know, take all the credit at the end of
00:09:34 --> 00:09:39 the show. So but, you know, I have to apologize for that since he he muted me.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 But it won't happen this show. I can guarantee.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 OK, I just wanted to let you know that.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:47 OK, no muting. Okay, Leonard? Don't do it. Okay?
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 All right. We'll see. All right.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:55 Anyway, let's move on to our first story for tonight. I don't know if some of
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 you guys might have heard this in...
00:09:59 --> 00:10:04 Kirk Franklin confronts Eckler after a canceled Philadelphia concert.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:10 It says the gospel icon was leaving the rain canceled Wawa Welcome America Festival,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:16 when in exchange with a man shouting for him to repent.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:22 Escalated. You know, they lost a lot of money on that too, by the way.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:29 When that rain came and canceled, yeah, because people were looking forward to this concert.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:34 After inclement weather led to the cancellation of his show during the Wawa
00:10:34 --> 00:10:40 Welcome America Festival at Independence Hall, Kirk Franklin found himself at
00:10:40 --> 00:10:44 the center of chaotic confrontation with a heckler in Philadelphia.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:50 Only in Philadelphia. You know what I mean? On Sunday, June 28th,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:55 as the 56-year-old gospel star was leaving the area, someone in the crowd approached
00:10:55 --> 00:10:59 the singer, declaring he and his wife were going to hell.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:06 According to the footage circulating online, someone dressed in a red shirt,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:13 and a white baseball cap can be seen imploring Franklin to repent.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 He kept saying, you need to repent.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:21 The man can be heard saying, as Franklin politely attempts to usher him along,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:26 by responding, well, I love you.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:32 The man then becomes more enraged, smacking Franklin's outstretched hand away
00:11:32 --> 00:11:37 while continuing to demand that he stop gaslighting him and repent.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:41 He also says something to suggest that.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:48 He takes issues with the Grammy winner's denomination as he says,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:54 I can't shake the hand of a man who believes a different doctrine than me.
00:11:55 --> 00:12:00 You and your wife are going to hell if you don't repent, the man added.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:04 At that point, Franklin, who was married to Tammy Collins, appears to have heard
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 enough and begins advancing towards the individual.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:13 Before security and police quickly step in between the two men and then escort
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 the singer away from the scene.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:22 The unidentified man sighs, throws his hands up in the air, and eventually walks
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 off, disappearing into the crowd.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:31 The stomp singer, who set to headline the Gospel on Independence concert as
00:12:31 --> 00:12:34 part of the Wawa Welcome America Festival,
00:12:35 --> 00:12:40 at Independence Hall, when lightning in the area halted the show before a heavy
00:12:40 --> 00:12:44 downpour, forced organizers to cancel it altogether.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:50 The event was hosted by Morehead Brown Clark and honored Philadelphia radio
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 personality Patty Jackson.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:57 While there wasn't much Franklin could do to control the weather,
00:12:57 --> 00:13:03 there was, according to Fox 29, a mix of reaction from those who gathered for the festival.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:11 While most understood the safety concerns, many left frustrated that there wasn't
00:13:11 --> 00:13:15 a better weather contingency plan in place.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:23 After the cancellation, Franklin greeted fans from the SUV's sunroof and footage
00:13:23 --> 00:13:27 shared to his Instagram stories with the caption, Love you, Philly.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:33 He can be seen standing on the vehicle's roof, waving to the cheering crowd
00:13:33 --> 00:13:38 of fans and another post Franklin is seeing managing to still greet many different
00:13:38 --> 00:13:42 fans before the weather cuts the evening short. So.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:48 And I don't know if you saw the video, but you can see the, you know,
00:13:48 --> 00:13:52 the guy is definitely giving Kirk the business.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:58 And Kirk is trying to, you know, de-escalate it, you know, and trying to talk
00:13:58 --> 00:14:01 to the guy, you know, trying to bring him in. Because, of course,
00:14:01 --> 00:14:06 you know, he got eyes on him, Kirk, you know, and Kirk's trying not to go there with the dude, you know.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:13 And, you know, social media, all you got to do is just lose your cool for a moment and it's over.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:19 You know cancel city so and the guy just kept giving it to him and giving it
00:14:19 --> 00:14:24 to him to a kurt this probably you could tell you could see in his face he had enough,
00:14:24 --> 00:14:29 and he said wait hold on and he started walking towards the dude and everybody
00:14:29 --> 00:14:32 you know you know just handlers was like yeah now you don't want to do that,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:36 you know you don't want to do that so and that you could tell that's probably
00:14:36 --> 00:14:40 what the guy wanted him to do in the first place was to come at him you know so he can,
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 you know, get him out of his character, you know.
00:14:46 --> 00:14:49 You know, we see a lot of this stuff happening all the time,
00:14:49 --> 00:14:52 especially on social media, because social media catches everything.
00:14:54 --> 00:15:02 Do you think Kurt handled it well? And, you know, do you think that if all eyes
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 wasn't on him, something else would have happened?
00:15:05 --> 00:15:10 So to be honest, I'm not sure. But one thing I can say as you're reading the story,
00:15:11 --> 00:15:16 and Dave, you know, I don't know about you, but I think it's so odd that people
00:15:16 --> 00:15:22 feel the need to confront people who are basically just living their life,
00:15:22 --> 00:15:27 trying to tell them what they should and should not be doing.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:33 I don't know. I just think it's a weird thing. When I think about it from my
00:15:33 --> 00:15:38 point of view, let's say yourself, David Coker.
00:15:41 --> 00:15:44 If you're my friend, that's different, but you're just some random man on the
00:15:44 --> 00:15:48 street and you're doing something that I don't like. Let's say you're walking
00:15:48 --> 00:15:53 down the street singing or, you know, you're walking down the street waving
00:15:53 --> 00:15:55 your Trump flag around, you know.
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 For the most part, I'm going to let you do you. But, you know,
00:15:59 --> 00:16:05 I think it's so odd the people who, you know, will come to you who you don't
00:16:05 --> 00:16:08 know. And I'm sure you got a story to tell.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:12 But, you know, people who just come to you who you don't even know telling you
00:16:12 --> 00:16:17 what you need to do, what you need to change, who you need to talk to,
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 who you don't need to talk to.
00:16:20 --> 00:16:25 I don't know. That's always just seems super weird. And maybe because I'm just
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 the type of person, like, OK, I'm going to let you live your life.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 And if, you know, if we're associated, like we're friends or whatever, that's one thing.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:38 But if we're not, I'm going to let you, you know, whatever you do is what you do.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:45 At the campground, there are a lot of people who smoke cigarettes and they I can't lie.
00:16:45 --> 00:16:50 Like I always be wanting to say little stuff and jabs. And, you know,
00:16:50 --> 00:16:53 when they talk about, you know, being short on money, my first thing was,
00:16:53 --> 00:16:56 shoot, if you ain't buying them $10 pack of cigarettes.
00:16:56 --> 00:17:01 But, you know, I just keep it to myself and I just let them do them. But I don't know.
00:17:02 --> 00:17:05 I think I was somewhere recently where.
00:17:07 --> 00:17:11 Someone came up to me and said something like, you know, are you a Christian?
00:17:11 --> 00:17:13 And I was like, yeah, you know, I believe in God.
00:17:14 --> 00:17:19 And then they like doubled down on, you know, like some religion stuff.
00:17:19 --> 00:17:24 Like Dave, have you ever hit some people who like the Bible thumpers who they come up to you?
00:17:25 --> 00:17:27 And Dave, we already know you're a deacon at the church. So,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:31 you know, you love the Lord and he is your savior.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:37 But have you ran across the people who just try to like almost like read the
00:17:37 --> 00:17:41 Bible to you in person on the spot, you know, while you're just walking down the street?
00:17:42 --> 00:17:47 Oh, yeah. Many times over the years. You know, you got the Latter-day Saints,
00:17:47 --> 00:17:51 you got Jehovah Witnesses. I mean, there's a lot of the people that will do that.
00:17:51 --> 00:17:54 I was in the Seventh-day Adventist religion for a long time,
00:17:54 --> 00:18:00 and there were some people that would do that in that religion. So, yes, it's been done.
00:18:01 --> 00:18:08 You know, you always, you know, we always find ourselves reacting in a certain
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 way when people come to us.
00:18:10 --> 00:18:13 You know, we will, like you just did it just then.
00:18:13 --> 00:18:16 When you said, yeah, I'm a Christian and, you know, I believe in God,
00:18:16 --> 00:18:19 you know, so you'll humor them for a moment.
00:18:19 --> 00:18:25 But then when they start going in, that's when you're trying to figure out how to get away, right?
00:18:27 --> 00:18:33 Yeah, my facts are playing. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, because you have some people that
00:18:33 --> 00:18:36 will say what they got to say and they'll keep it moving.
00:18:36 --> 00:18:39 But then it's those ones that say you do know, right?
00:18:40 --> 00:18:44 And then they'll start asking you questions to see what you're going to say,
00:18:44 --> 00:18:47 so they can have an answer for everything that you say.
00:18:47 --> 00:18:51 Well, you know, that's not how it's going to happen or something like that.
00:18:51 --> 00:18:55 And, of course, everybody thinks they have the answers.
00:18:56 --> 00:19:00 You know I mean when it comes to this whole thing when it comes to religion,
00:19:01 --> 00:19:03 you know you know you look at
00:19:03 --> 00:19:09 a guy like Kirk Franklin whose career was based on you know gospel music,
00:19:10 --> 00:19:16 but we see Kirk doing all kinds of stuff you know and that's what gets him questioned
00:19:16 --> 00:19:18 a lot because especially,
00:19:18 --> 00:19:23 you know you see him on stage Molly Whoppin and all kinds of stuff man you know
00:19:23 --> 00:19:27 and you be saying what is Kirk doing You know, there's some of the outfits that
00:19:27 --> 00:19:33 he wears and so forth, you know, and he'd be looking like he'd go to the streets sometimes, you know,
00:19:33 --> 00:19:38 some of the music that he'd be playing, you know, and Kurt has mixed it up with,
00:19:38 --> 00:19:42 you know, has done collaborations with a lot of rappers and so forth.
00:19:44 --> 00:19:49 I understand he's trying to reach a certain group of individuals and trying
00:19:49 --> 00:19:51 to reach them in the way that he's been reaching them.
00:19:51 --> 00:19:55 I mean, you know, it's hard to believe he's 56 years old because I remember
00:19:55 --> 00:20:01 when he came out and, you know, his music is definitely different now than when,
00:20:01 --> 00:20:05 he first came out, you know. But then he's a different guy too.
00:20:06 --> 00:20:11 Yeah. So when you have people that are approaching, because people are watching.
00:20:11 --> 00:20:15 These days, Leonard, people are always watching everything you do now.
00:20:16 --> 00:20:23 You know, it used to be before, if you did something in the streets,
00:20:23 --> 00:20:27 nobody knew about it unless they were there. You know what I mean?
00:20:28 --> 00:20:31 Nowadays, you do something in the street, you don't have to be there.
00:20:31 --> 00:20:36 Everybody knows about it, you know, because all it takes is for one person to pull out their phone.
00:20:37 --> 00:20:41 You ever look at those videos where you see the fighting videos where people,
00:20:41 --> 00:20:46 kids or young people are even in the fast food restaurants where people be losing
00:20:46 --> 00:20:48 their minds and want to fight the staff.
00:20:49 --> 00:20:54 You ever see those videos? Yeah. What is everybody standing there doing when
00:20:54 --> 00:20:57 that's going on? Yeah, they videotape.
00:20:58 --> 00:20:59 Nobody's breaking anything up, right?
00:21:02 --> 00:21:06 You know, because they, you know, they figure if they can get the video to go
00:21:06 --> 00:21:11 viral, of course, that's to their advantage because they get something on that, you know.
00:21:11 --> 00:21:17 And, you know, nobody seems to care anymore or they care too much.
00:21:17 --> 00:21:22 This guy who approached Kurt saw the opportunity to say what he said to him.
00:21:23 --> 00:21:27 And he got, and he hit home with Kurt, you know, because that's the thing.
00:21:28 --> 00:21:32 A lot of these people we consider to be celebrities or athletes or whatever
00:21:32 --> 00:21:37 the case may be you could say something to them if you know who they are well
00:21:37 --> 00:21:39 enough that's going to get their attention oh yeah.
00:21:41 --> 00:21:46 You know and all this guy knew exactly what to say to kurt he said repent,
00:21:47 --> 00:21:51 you know because a lot of people been saying for years kirk franklin been playing
00:21:51 --> 00:21:57 church for a long time you know it's a this is what he said you know he said
00:21:57 --> 00:22:02 the right word at the right time and he got through to him so,
00:22:03 --> 00:22:07 i just wanted to bring it up because i just thought it was interesting and you
00:22:07 --> 00:22:12 know how kurt handled it now that could have went left it could have went way left real quick you know,
00:22:13 --> 00:22:19 but kurt i'm sure everybody's saying hey i'm sure his bodyguard said it's not worth it man don't do it,
00:22:20 --> 00:22:26 you know so you know so i wonder how how many of you guys are thinking that
00:22:26 --> 00:22:32 kurt reacted the right way or should kurt had gotten into dude's face and handled it you know,
00:22:33 --> 00:22:38 i think i think he was almost there though because that guy was pressing buttons
00:22:38 --> 00:22:42 if you get a chance to look at the video you hear the guy shouting at him you
00:22:42 --> 00:22:43 definitely do so yeah yeah,
00:22:44 --> 00:22:48 All right, so I'm going to move on to our next story.
00:22:51 --> 00:22:54 This next story I just thought was interesting because of timing.
00:22:55 --> 00:23:04 Michael Jackson's Billie Jean reaches number one on the Billboard R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
00:23:05 --> 00:23:08 Now, Billie Jean came out, what, 83?
00:23:09 --> 00:23:13 I think it was somewhere back there. It was always a popular song. I think it was.
00:23:17 --> 00:23:20 The second song on the Thriller album that was released. Yeah,
00:23:20 --> 00:23:24 it came out January 2nd, 1983. Okay, yeah.
00:23:25 --> 00:23:32 Let me just read this to you. It says, Renewed attention around the hit biopic,
00:23:32 --> 00:23:38 Michael helped push the 1983 classic to the top of the R&B digital song charts.
00:23:39 --> 00:23:40 For the first time.
00:23:41 --> 00:23:46 Michael Jackson's catalog continues to gain new momentum since the movie Michael
00:23:46 --> 00:23:51 came out, and one of his most famous songs just added another Billboard achievement.
00:23:52 --> 00:23:59 Billie Jean has reached number one on the Billboard R&B Digital Song Sale chart for the first time, and,
00:24:02 --> 00:24:03 the rankings tracked.
00:24:06 --> 00:24:10 Paid downloads of the R&B songs in the United States per force.
00:24:11 --> 00:24:17 The song rose from number two during its 57th week on the chart.
00:24:18 --> 00:24:26 It first appeared on the list in July 2013, making the climb to number one at
00:24:26 --> 00:24:30 a nearly 13-year journey. That's crazy.
00:24:32 --> 00:24:38 Jackson released Billie Jean on January 2, 1983, as the second single from Thriller.
00:24:39 --> 00:24:44 He wrote the track and produced it with Quincy Jones. The song quickly became a defining hit.
00:24:45 --> 00:24:49 It topped the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in several countries,
00:24:49 --> 00:24:55 including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Ireland,
00:24:55 --> 00:24:56 Switzerland, and Belgium.
00:24:57 --> 00:25:01 The latest milestone follows the renewed interest in the Jackson music after
00:25:01 --> 00:25:03 the release of the biopic Michael.
00:25:04 --> 00:25:09 The film helped drive some new streaming and sales activity around his catalog.
00:25:10 --> 00:25:15 Earlier this year, Billie Jean also became Jackson's first number one song on
00:25:15 --> 00:25:18 the Billboard Global 200 chart.
00:25:18 --> 00:25:23 The track remains closely tied to one of Jackson's most famous televised moments,
00:25:23 --> 00:25:27 his performance of Billie Jean on the Motown 25 special,
00:25:28 --> 00:25:35 Yesterday, Today, Forever, earning an Emmy Award nomination and became a lasting
00:25:35 --> 00:25:38 part of pop culture history. I agree.
00:25:40 --> 00:25:45 Do you remember the first time you heard Billy Dee? No, but I remember the first
00:25:45 --> 00:25:47 time I really heard Michael Jackson because I remember I was trying to do the
00:25:47 --> 00:25:51 moonwalk dance. So, I mean, that's probably the first.
00:25:51 --> 00:25:54 How many times did you fall down, by the way? No, no, no. I mean,
00:25:54 --> 00:25:59 I never fell, but I couldn't get it smooth. You know what I mean? Okay, all right, okay.
00:26:00 --> 00:26:03 You remember when you saw the video?
00:26:04 --> 00:26:09 For what? Billy Dee. No. I remember Beated. I remember Thriller.
00:26:09 --> 00:26:11 I don't remember Billie Jean.
00:26:12 --> 00:26:16 Yeah. I think Beat It was the first single off the album, if I'm not mistaken.
00:26:17 --> 00:26:20 Then Thriller was released after Billie Jean.
00:26:24 --> 00:26:28 I remember hearing the song. I didn't like it when I first heard it.
00:26:29 --> 00:26:35 Because, you know, Michael, keep in mind, Michael was going in a new direction.
00:26:35 --> 00:26:43 Like his last album, his first album, was a little bit more R&B flavored.
00:26:43 --> 00:26:47 You know, he had some really hard-hitting songs on that first album.
00:26:48 --> 00:26:52 But now he's switching it up and you can tell he's trying to go in a whole different direction.
00:26:52 --> 00:26:59 He's trying to get everybody now you know what i mean not just us but he's trying to get everybody,
00:27:00 --> 00:27:04 and i remember hearing it then i watched the video and the video didn't make any sense to me,
00:27:05 --> 00:27:09 at all yeah you're probably like who the hell is billy jean yeah,
00:27:10 --> 00:27:15 to this day are we sure who billy jean is to this day no no no no
00:27:15 --> 00:27:20 and how many times michael was very slick with the words to his song if you
00:27:20 --> 00:27:24 ever pay attention to because a lot of his songs you didn't know what michael
00:27:24 --> 00:27:28 was singing about we're just starting to find out stuff about some of the songs that you know,
00:27:29 --> 00:27:31 i didn't know like what is that,
00:27:32 --> 00:27:39 with smooth criminal when he says the song uh what did he say mary are you okay or yeah,
00:27:40 --> 00:27:45 no it's not mary what does he say who's the name i forget yeah but you know
00:27:45 --> 00:27:49 and that's a 9-1-1 thing Did you do that? No.
00:27:51 --> 00:27:56 This is what I'm talking about. Mike was very slick. There's a, is it Mary? Are you okay?
00:27:58 --> 00:28:06 Yeah, I forget. But that means somebody's down and having complications.
00:28:06 --> 00:28:12 And that's a 911 call. That's a 911 thing to give, to start giving.
00:28:13 --> 00:28:16 CPR? CPR. Oh, wow.
00:28:17 --> 00:28:20 You didn't know that, did you? Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah.
00:28:20 --> 00:28:26 And I just found out recently myself, and I said, wait, because I said that
00:28:26 --> 00:28:30 to Samaya, they said, yeah, oh yeah, that's been known for a long time,
00:28:30 --> 00:28:30 that's what he was doing,
00:28:31 --> 00:28:37 you know, so Mike was very slick with a lot of stuff that he said in his songs,
00:28:37 --> 00:28:40 and this whole Billie Jean thing, like, I was, like, when I first listened to
00:28:40 --> 00:28:42 it, I was like, eh, it's okay.
00:28:43 --> 00:28:47 I didn't think it would ever grow into what it grew into. Yeah. You know.
00:28:49 --> 00:28:53 Like, and then to hear all the stories about it, you know, you know,
00:28:53 --> 00:28:56 bike, you know, did bike have a kid out there that he wasn't,
00:28:57 --> 00:29:02 you know, that he wasn't claiming or, you know, did he have a secret lover and
00:29:02 --> 00:29:06 all of this stuff, you know, so everybody's trying to figure out all of this stuff.
00:29:06 --> 00:29:08 And Mike knew how to tell a story in a song.
00:29:09 --> 00:29:13 Yeah, he definitely did. He brought those videos that just kind of left you
00:29:13 --> 00:29:15 wondering, And it's like, what is going on here, you know?
00:29:16 --> 00:29:22 But for this song, to go on this particular chart, show up on this particular
00:29:22 --> 00:29:27 chart in 2013, and track his way to number one 13 years later,
00:29:28 --> 00:29:31 that just tells you to stay in power of Michael Jackson.
00:29:31 --> 00:29:36 And that's, you know, and that's probably why he will go down in history as
00:29:36 --> 00:29:39 the greatest performer of all time.
00:29:39 --> 00:29:43 I don't see how, I mean, I look at all the stuff that goes, you know they could
00:29:43 --> 00:29:46 talk about chris brown they could talk about usher you know,
00:29:47 --> 00:29:52 you can see how michael and florence both of those guys they they dance like
00:29:52 --> 00:29:57 him they sing like him they move like him but they ain't him,
00:29:58 --> 00:30:02 you know that's one thing he you know as you saw the movie michael.
00:30:04 --> 00:30:12 You could tell, like, Jafar, they said Jafar, like, had to go in to become Michael, you know?
00:30:13 --> 00:30:18 And he studied everything his uncle did, you know, to move like him.
00:30:18 --> 00:30:23 And you really, you know, when you looked at him on that screen,
00:30:23 --> 00:30:26 you could see Michael all over, you know?
00:30:26 --> 00:30:32 So this was, you know, his music is not going anywhere.
00:30:32 --> 00:30:35 It's always going to be. I mean, when you see some of these videos,
00:30:35 --> 00:30:38 you see these five, six, seven-year-old kids dancing to Michael's music,
00:30:39 --> 00:30:41 you'd be like, that dude ain't ever going to go away.
00:30:42 --> 00:30:47 You know, so were your kids Michael Jackson fans? No.
00:30:48 --> 00:30:51 Really? No. I mean, no.
00:30:52 --> 00:30:57 I mean, I can't say she was a fan, and probably only because she danced.
00:30:57 --> 00:30:59 And, you know, of course, there's always like a Michael Jackson.
00:30:59 --> 00:31:02 You know, Michael Jackson has so many songs that they used for dance.
00:31:02 --> 00:31:06 So, I mean, she likes his music, but I can't say she was a fan.
00:31:06 --> 00:31:12 Like, I know she did go see the movie Michael, but it wasn't anything like, oh, I got to go see it.
00:31:13 --> 00:31:16 Did she like it after she saw it? Yeah, she liked it.
00:31:18 --> 00:31:21 Okay. All right. And your son is just not. Yeah, nah.
00:31:23 --> 00:31:30 He good. Give him his handheld video games, and that's all he needs.
00:31:30 --> 00:31:31 That's all he needs. Okay.
00:31:32 --> 00:31:36 But I'm sure a lot of Michael's music is probably in some of them video games.
00:31:38 --> 00:31:45 Not the one he's playing. They probably got a limited, commercial-free radio. Okay. Sorry. Okay.
00:31:47 --> 00:31:52 Well, I just thought it was a big accomplishment, and I just wanted to bring it up.
00:31:52 --> 00:31:56 I mean, and Billie Jean, you know, is one of his most popular songs,
00:31:56 --> 00:32:02 so it doesn't surprise me that that song has been on that chart for a long time
00:32:02 --> 00:32:04 and the bomb made it to number one.
00:32:04 --> 00:32:08 So, I mean, the fact that it was number two for 57 weeks on that chart,
00:32:08 --> 00:32:12 that's crazy, too. Yeah, that is crazy. Yeah. So, yeah.
00:32:13 --> 00:32:17 Okay. Moving on to our next subject.
00:32:17 --> 00:32:22 Now, the reason I brought this up, and I'm bringing this up,
00:32:22 --> 00:32:25 is because I was listening to an interview.
00:32:25 --> 00:32:30 You know, this guy's out on a book tour right now talking about his career and so forth.
00:32:31 --> 00:32:38 And I was listening to, I've caught him on two different shows talking about his career.
00:32:38 --> 00:32:42 One of them was The Breakfast Club and another one was, gosh,
00:32:42 --> 00:32:49 I forget who the hosts were, but he was on another podcast and he was talking about his career.
00:32:50 --> 00:32:51 And this is Arsenio Hall.
00:32:52 --> 00:32:57 Now, did you watch Our City Hall when he was on? I did. Okay.
00:32:58 --> 00:33:00 Were you a fan? Yeah, I did. I liked it.
00:33:00 --> 00:33:04 Okay. I was in high school, so I would try to stay up late enough to watch it.
00:33:04 --> 00:33:08 Yeah, and that tells you a lot. Leonard was in high school when it was on.
00:33:09 --> 00:33:15 And you know how many high schoolers stayed up to be able to watch that show?
00:33:15 --> 00:33:20 It was a lot. It was a lot. So he had a show that was for us,
00:33:21 --> 00:33:25 by us, and, you know, it was just an awesome, awesome show.
00:33:26 --> 00:33:31 And I'm glad that he wrote his memoirs and he's out here talking about a lot
00:33:31 --> 00:33:33 of the stuff that went on with the show.
00:33:33 --> 00:33:38 A lot of interesting stuff, by the way, about how the show came about and,
00:33:39 --> 00:33:41 you know, what led to his demise.
00:33:41 --> 00:33:47 And you know but he also talked about if he was to try to do that show now he
00:33:47 --> 00:33:51 wouldn't be able to do it because of social media or whatever he said what made it work was,
00:33:52 --> 00:33:57 everything basically was one take you know you know you didn't have the we didn't
00:33:57 --> 00:34:02 have the dvrs we didn't have any of that stuff if you didn't record it on a
00:34:02 --> 00:34:04 vhs tape or something like that,
00:34:04 --> 00:34:08 you wasn't going to see the show, but when you watched it, you know?
00:34:08 --> 00:34:12 So, and, you know, of course we only had limited channels back there.
00:34:12 --> 00:34:15 So you had to make your choice of which late night show you were gonna watch.
00:34:15 --> 00:34:17 And usually we watched this show.
00:34:18 --> 00:34:29 So I wanted to go over a list, the top 10 moments that define the Arsenio Harrell show. Okay.
00:34:29 --> 00:34:33 And so many of you remember all these moments.
00:34:35 --> 00:34:38 I'm going to start with number, I'm going to do reverse the order.
00:34:39 --> 00:34:40 So starting with number 10.
00:34:41 --> 00:34:44 I think I know all of these moments, matter of fact. I think I watched every,
00:34:44 --> 00:34:46 because I was a big fan. I watched it every night.
00:34:47 --> 00:34:51 Sammy Davis Jr.'s final television appearance.
00:34:52 --> 00:34:58 It was a legendary moment when the Rat Pack icon appeared visibly frail,
00:34:58 --> 00:35:03 but full of life to share a touching emotional conversation and receive his
00:35:03 --> 00:35:05 flowers from Arsenio Hall.
00:35:05 --> 00:35:10 I do remember this moment. And yeah, he was small and he was frail,
00:35:10 --> 00:35:15 but he took a moment to come on the show and even danced a little bit with Arsenio.
00:35:16 --> 00:35:21 It was a touching moment. And Arsenio, one thing, if you remember anything about
00:35:21 --> 00:35:26 Arsenio, he gave everybody respect for what they did.
00:35:28 --> 00:35:32 Do you remember this moment? Sammy Davis Jr.? No. Okay.
00:35:33 --> 00:35:36 All right. Yeah, I didn't think you would, but I do remember this moment.
00:35:36 --> 00:35:40 Okay. Number nine, the Prince's Takeover.
00:35:41 --> 00:35:47 Prince didn't just play a single song. He frequently commandeered the entire
00:35:47 --> 00:35:53 hour of the show to perform extended electrifying sets with his band.
00:35:54 --> 00:35:57 Prince used to take over his show, and he wouldn't say anything.
00:35:58 --> 00:36:02 You know, Prince back then would barely talk to anybody, right?
00:36:03 --> 00:36:08 He'd try to talk to Prince and said, Prince would give him one-word answers. It was ridiculous.
00:36:08 --> 00:36:12 You could tell he was trying to get stuff out of Prince, and Prince would just smile and say, okay.
00:36:13 --> 00:36:17 You know, that kind of stuff. But Prince would take over the show.
00:36:17 --> 00:36:22 I mean, you know, he'd get out there and do what was supposed to be one song,
00:36:22 --> 00:36:25 and that song would turn into like four or five songs, you know?
00:36:25 --> 00:36:27 So the Prince takeover was real.
00:36:28 --> 00:36:31 That was number nine. Do you remember seeing Prince on there at all?
00:36:32 --> 00:36:35 I feel like I remember seeing him, but I don't remember a takeover,
00:36:35 --> 00:36:39 though. Yeah, he was on there a couple times, and he took over the show.
00:36:41 --> 00:36:46 Number eight, a tribe called Quest performed Scenario. Remember that song,
00:36:46 --> 00:36:48 Scenario? Yeah, I know the song.
00:36:48 --> 00:36:52 Yep. You don't remember them on there? No.
00:36:52 --> 00:36:56 They went nuts on the show that night. Gotcha. delivered one of the greatest
00:36:56 --> 00:37:00 hip-hop performances in television history. You got to go back and look at this video.
00:37:01 --> 00:37:06 It was crazy. It was crazy. The group took over the stage with leaders of the new school.
00:37:07 --> 00:37:14 It was crazy. It was. It was. Now, this was one of my favorite moments on the
00:37:14 --> 00:37:17 show because of what Arsenio did.
00:37:17 --> 00:37:20 Do you remember the night Vanilla Ice was on there?
00:37:20 --> 00:37:25 It was ringing a bell, but I don't remember that. It was a big controversy because,
00:37:26 --> 00:37:30 this was, of course, Vanilla Ice was at the top, and his song,
00:37:30 --> 00:37:33 you know, Ice Ice Baby was out.
00:37:33 --> 00:37:37 Mm-hmm. And so this says, interviewing Vanilla Ice.
00:37:38 --> 00:37:46 After pressing Vanilla Ice about his authenticity and bringing on a hype man,
00:37:47 --> 00:37:54 Arsenio grilled the rapper about his music and persona in a famously awkward
00:37:54 --> 00:37:57 yet culturally significant exchange.
00:37:58 --> 00:37:59 So they're being nice here.
00:38:01 --> 00:38:09 Arsenio basically embarrassed the dude. So Vanilla Ice comes out in his Vanilla Ice way.
00:38:09 --> 00:38:13 And, you know, he's trying to be cool, you know, trying to be black,
00:38:13 --> 00:38:15 you know, because that's how he used to do.
00:38:15 --> 00:38:19 And he's up there dapping Arsenio up and whatever. Arsenio's giving him the
00:38:19 --> 00:38:24 side eye, the whole you know, like, hey man yeah, cool, cool.
00:38:25 --> 00:38:30 And so Arsenio brings him over to Cincinnati and starts talking to him and trying
00:38:30 --> 00:38:31 to, you know, do the interview.
00:38:32 --> 00:38:36 So, Vanilla Ice, and this is where he messed up later.
00:38:36 --> 00:38:40 Vanilla Ice says hold on man, hold on. Before we get into all that,
00:38:41 --> 00:38:42 I just want to shout out my boy.
00:38:43 --> 00:38:49 My boy is here Whitney he's off there and you know his boy is Flavor Flav.
00:38:50 --> 00:38:55 Flavor Flav is off the side you know off the stage all to the side and he's
00:38:55 --> 00:38:58 pointing them out and Flavor you know steps out from behind the curtain you know
00:38:59 --> 00:39:03 and you know waves to the crowd and everybody he said yeah that's my boy and
00:39:03 --> 00:39:05 so forth and so forth and so forth.
00:39:05 --> 00:39:08 Arsenio is pissed.
00:39:09 --> 00:39:14 And he goes in on him. He's like, yo, why do you have to do that? What was that all about?
00:39:15 --> 00:39:18 He said, I just want to acknowledge that my boy was here with me or whatever.
00:39:18 --> 00:39:24 He said, so you feel you needed to do that to show that you cool and that you down with us?
00:39:24 --> 00:39:28 He said, I'm not interviewing Flavor Flavor. I'm interviewing you.
00:39:28 --> 00:39:32 He said, oh, he just went in later.
00:39:33 --> 00:39:36 He just, you know, I used to sit there and turn the red, you know, and everything.
00:39:37 --> 00:39:43 And he just said to him, man, so this is what you do. You come out and you do
00:39:43 --> 00:39:45 our dance steps. You do our music.
00:39:46 --> 00:39:51 You use a sample for one of our songs. And then you try to get us to accept
00:39:51 --> 00:39:56 you and buy your records when you know this ain't really who you are.
00:39:56 --> 00:40:01 He said, didn't I hear that you're not from a poor family, that you're from
00:40:01 --> 00:40:04 a middle-class family, and that your parents had money?
00:40:05 --> 00:40:07 Oh, man, he went in on him.
00:40:08 --> 00:40:11 Yeah, it was bad. If you ever get a test, look that interview up.
00:40:13 --> 00:40:14 It was kind of...
00:40:15 --> 00:40:21 He caught him completely off guard. It was kind of messed up what Arsenio did
00:40:21 --> 00:40:27 to him, but it was needed because he definitely brought him down off his high horse. And,
00:40:29 --> 00:40:36 he said, don't ever come on my show doing that again. And so he called him out,
00:40:36 --> 00:40:37 man. He did. He called him out.
00:40:38 --> 00:40:43 It was one of the best interviews I've ever seen because Arsenio wasn't playing with him.
00:40:43 --> 00:40:49 You know so and that was at the height of his career when arsenio did that tool,
00:40:50 --> 00:40:55 so ever if you ever get a chance look that interview up it was crazy okay well,
00:40:56 --> 00:41:00 and you guys that are listening definitely look that interview up uh number
00:41:00 --> 00:41:02 six was snoop dog's major,
00:41:03 --> 00:41:08 television intro snoop dog made his network television debuted on on the show
00:41:08 --> 00:41:12 shortly after releasing his masterpiece album, Doggy's Dog,
00:41:12 --> 00:41:15 establishing his mainstream staying power.
00:41:16 --> 00:41:21 And yeah, the first time he ever showed up on TV was on the Arsenio show.
00:41:21 --> 00:41:24 He came out wearing a hockey jersey. Arsenio said, what you got a hockey jersey on for?
00:41:27 --> 00:41:30 But he was real shy and he didn't say a lot, but he told him to show up when
00:41:30 --> 00:41:32 he got up there and started free.
00:41:32 --> 00:41:36 He did a freestyle and nobody had ever heard of freestyle on TV before.
00:41:36 --> 00:41:42 Oh, wow. Really? Yeah. At that time? No. Because he was the only one bringing rappers on the show.
00:41:44 --> 00:41:51 Especially new people. Keep in mind, he broke a lot of new people that nobody had ever seen before.
00:41:52 --> 00:41:55 He had a 10-year-old little boy on the show.
00:41:56 --> 00:42:01 He brought him on the show where he wanted to bring him on as a guest and sit
00:42:01 --> 00:42:05 him down and have a conversation with him because this kid was on Star Search
00:42:05 --> 00:42:08 and a couple other talent shows and was doing very well.
00:42:09 --> 00:42:13 But his boss said no to him, booking him as a guest.
00:42:14 --> 00:42:20 So Arsenio, being Arsenio, had him in the crowd and was doing his monologue.
00:42:20 --> 00:42:24 He said, hey, he said, I got to introduce you guys to one of the most talented
00:42:24 --> 00:42:28 kids I've ever seen in my life. So he's going against the grave with his bosses,
00:42:28 --> 00:42:34 and he pulls him up on stage and said, I just got to let you guys hear this guy.
00:42:35 --> 00:42:39 And he starts singing an Elvis Presley song or something. I forget what he said
00:42:39 --> 00:42:42 and what he's singing. But the kid was Bruno Mars.
00:42:45 --> 00:42:49 And he said, on that show, he said, this kid's going to be big, y'all.
00:42:49 --> 00:42:53 Bruno Mars at 10 years old. That's crazy.
00:42:54 --> 00:42:59 But this is the kind of talent that he developed. Number five,
00:42:59 --> 00:43:01 Mariah Carey, television debut.
00:43:03 --> 00:43:07 Take this in mind, Mariah Carey's television debut, okay?
00:43:07 --> 00:43:13 Before she was a global superstar, Mariah Carey's den manager gave Arsenio a demo tape.
00:43:14 --> 00:43:19 He championed for her and introduced visions of love to the world.
00:43:19 --> 00:43:22 That's where she first sang it on his show.
00:43:22 --> 00:43:27 Crazy. Launching the legendary career. She gives him a lot of credit for that
00:43:27 --> 00:43:29 moment, matter of fact. You know?
00:43:31 --> 00:43:37 So that was number five. number four Eddie Murphy and Michael Jackson mutual
00:43:37 --> 00:43:40 admiration this was an awkward moment too by the way,
00:43:41 --> 00:43:46 that even though they were already friends the close friends shared the stage with Eddie Murphy,
00:43:47 --> 00:43:51 you know cause that you know him and Art and the old courts of France publicly
00:43:51 --> 00:43:57 praising the king of pop often offering a rare and candid glimpse into their
00:43:57 --> 00:44:01 friendship and their mutual respect so and they were you know,
00:44:02 --> 00:44:05 They were up there messing with Michael, and Michael was like, leave me alone.
00:44:06 --> 00:44:10 You know, that type of stuff, you know. But they were having a good time with Michael the whole time.
00:44:10 --> 00:44:14 I mean, see, all these I remember. I remember seeing every last one of these.
00:44:16 --> 00:44:21 The 1994 series finale, Hip Hop Cyper. Oh, this was crazy, too.
00:44:22 --> 00:44:27 Arsenio gave hip hop an unparalleled platform through his run.
00:44:28 --> 00:44:32 The show ended with an epic star-studded sniper with Wu-Tang Clan,
00:44:33 --> 00:44:42 Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, MC Light, and Snoop Dogg all on stage at the same time.
00:44:43 --> 00:44:47 It was crazy. They turned it out. So that was number three.
00:44:49 --> 00:44:55 I know you got to remember this one. Number two, Magic Johnson's HIV announcement.
00:44:55 --> 00:44:59 I do remember that one. That was crazy.
00:45:00 --> 00:45:04 Yeah, I remember Magic walking out, and Arsenio was crying the whole time.
00:45:05 --> 00:45:07 Magic handled it very well.
00:45:08 --> 00:45:12 And he came on that show to talk about it, because at that time,
00:45:12 --> 00:45:14 he hadn't even talked to the world yet.
00:45:14 --> 00:45:20 You know, so deeply moving and historic broadcast, NBA legend Magic Johnson
00:45:20 --> 00:45:27 appeared on the couch to openly discuss his HIV diagnosis, changing public perception
00:45:27 --> 00:45:29 and breaking stigmas overnight.
00:45:30 --> 00:45:37 Yeah, that was a big moment. And of course, you know, those two were very close.
00:45:37 --> 00:45:42 And, you know, he was very, you can see Arsenio was very torn the whole night.
00:45:43 --> 00:45:49 If you remember this moment. Number one, Bill Clinton plays the saxophone.
00:45:49 --> 00:45:51 I definitely remember that moment.
00:45:52 --> 00:45:58 Yeah. Where Dorsey's then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton played Heartbreak
00:45:58 --> 00:46:04 Hotel on the saxophone on June 3rd, 1992.
00:46:04 --> 00:46:10 It was widely considered one of the most iconic moments in political and pop culture history.
00:46:11 --> 00:46:15 I think all of us remember that moment. next bill clinton because he went on
00:46:15 --> 00:46:23 to win the the election after that so you know but you know it's funny they list these moments,
00:46:24 --> 00:46:31 but i have a few that they didn't mention when he interviewed muhammad ali and
00:46:31 --> 00:46:37 a young mike tyson and mike arsenio and so ali he said,
00:46:38 --> 00:46:42 he said who would win if you two if you two fought and,
00:46:43 --> 00:46:48 Tyson of course being you know giving up you know props to Muhammad because
00:46:48 --> 00:46:54 he was crazy about him he said oh he said he he said the champ will win he said the champ will win and,
00:46:56 --> 00:47:00 Ali looked at him said yeah you being nice he said I'm scared of you,
00:47:03 --> 00:47:09 Mike at that time was knocking everybody out and Arsenio said he said yeah champ
00:47:09 --> 00:47:12 you might not want to get in the ring with that dude you know so.
00:47:15 --> 00:47:19 When MC Hammer came on and turned the mother out.
00:47:20 --> 00:47:23 Do you remember when MC Hammer? Oh, my God.
00:47:23 --> 00:47:27 MC Hammer came on that show, man, and everybody was out.
00:47:28 --> 00:47:33 They lost their mind on that show. Now, here's a guy who doesn't ever get the
00:47:33 --> 00:47:37 props that I feel he deserves. Hammer. MC Hammer?
00:47:37 --> 00:47:39 Yeah. Hammer was the man.
00:47:40 --> 00:47:44 You got to get that moment in his time. Nobody did it like Hammer.
00:47:45 --> 00:47:48 You know, and Hammer came in, man, with all the people he had,
00:47:48 --> 00:47:51 all 100 of them people he had on stage with him.
00:47:52 --> 00:47:56 But his moment was big. And one thing I will say, you know, of course,
00:47:57 --> 00:48:03 he kind of did himself in with all, you know, because he gave so much of himself and his money.
00:48:03 --> 00:48:09 But, you know, he was truly a different type of person.
00:48:10 --> 00:48:15 And you never miss a Hammer show. I mean, when Hammer was on TV,
00:48:15 --> 00:48:17 man, you had to watch it. Am I wrong?
00:48:18 --> 00:48:25 Yeah, no, I agree. Yeah, he was crazy. You know, so anytime that Hammer was
00:48:25 --> 00:48:28 on that show, man, he turned it out on that show.
00:48:29 --> 00:48:37 The biggest thing that I remember that happened on that show was Arsenio had to make a decision.
00:48:38 --> 00:48:42 And the network was not playing along with it.
00:48:43 --> 00:48:47 Do you remember when he wanted to interview Minister Farrakhan?
00:48:48 --> 00:48:52 I feel like I, oh, you know, I heard that story this morning on The Breakfast
00:48:52 --> 00:48:55 Club. Oh, they talked about it. Okay. Yeah, they did. Yeah.
00:48:55 --> 00:48:58 I think that was a replay on The Breakfast Club this morning too,
00:48:58 --> 00:49:01 because I heard, I think that was from a couple weeks ago.
00:49:02 --> 00:49:07 But, yo, the network told him, no, don't bring him on there.
00:49:07 --> 00:49:08 Of course, at that time, I mean.
00:49:09 --> 00:49:13 So Arsenio told a different story on The Breakfast Club. What did he say?
00:49:14 --> 00:49:17 He said the network gave their permission because he was like,
00:49:17 --> 00:49:21 there's no way he could have brought him on with the network not being in agreement.
00:49:21 --> 00:49:26 Well, back in the day, though, there was a lot going on because when he was
00:49:26 --> 00:49:31 the first, because, see, when he first was supposed to come on,
00:49:32 --> 00:49:36 they didn't let him come on because he was advertised to be on one particular
00:49:36 --> 00:49:38 night and it didn't happen.
00:49:39 --> 00:49:43 And it didn't happen until, like, a little bit later, like a month or so later
00:49:43 --> 00:49:48 is when they finally had him on. But it was always said that if he had him on
00:49:48 --> 00:49:52 that show, that that was probably going to be the end of his show.
00:49:54 --> 00:49:58 And R.C. said, this is my show. I don't care. I want him on my show,
00:49:58 --> 00:49:59 and I'm going to have him on my show.
00:50:00 --> 00:50:04 So I'm reading here, it says that he was not fired for bringing on Paracon.
00:50:05 --> 00:50:08 He had actually submitted his resignation to Paramount a week prior,
00:50:08 --> 00:50:11 citing personal reasons and a desire to step back.
00:50:12 --> 00:50:15 Yeah, but see, he said, yeah, that he did say.
00:50:16 --> 00:50:21 But it was because a lot of people were upset because they heard at this time
00:50:21 --> 00:50:26 that he was going to bring him on. And the Jewish religion was really upset about it.
00:50:26 --> 00:50:30 That it was bringing him on because he had a lot of Jewish following at that time.
00:50:30 --> 00:50:35 But when he brought Farrakhan on, that's when his ratings started to dip.
00:50:36 --> 00:50:41 So, and, but he had already made up his mind that he was tired of those people.
00:50:41 --> 00:50:46 So, yeah, I'm sure. Yeah. So, but yeah, I'll never forget that interview.
00:50:46 --> 00:50:51 And, but he was definitely before his time. Now, would that show work now?
00:50:52 --> 00:50:55 I don't feel like it would work. Cause I don't feel like people watch TV like
00:50:55 --> 00:50:56 that. And like, I mean, more.
00:50:56 --> 00:51:00 The Arsenio Hall show would have to be a podcast, a video podcast.
00:51:02 --> 00:51:06 He would need to have the performances and everything, too. Like,
00:51:06 --> 00:51:11 well, these guys, these new rappers and performers are launching their own careers
00:51:11 --> 00:51:16 on social media first, and that's how a lot of them are getting discovered these days. Right.
00:51:17 --> 00:51:21 So it would be hard for him to have the same type of format that he had.
00:51:24 --> 00:51:28 But you would think that is, you know, if Byron Allen could still be relevant
00:51:28 --> 00:51:29 after all of these years,
00:51:30 --> 00:51:35 you know you would think Arsenio would be able to still find some kind of niche
00:51:35 --> 00:51:37 and carve his way accurately but you know,
00:51:38 --> 00:51:42 the difference is Byron Allen owns I know he owns a lot of that stuff yeah yeah,
00:51:43 --> 00:51:48 you know Arsenio Hall is and I only say a puppet not because of anything I'm
00:51:48 --> 00:51:54 just saying in terms of you know he has to play to the system yeah yeah that's
00:51:54 --> 00:51:55 true that's true that's why,
00:51:56 --> 00:52:00 you can't sleep on Byron Allen people because he He's made his own way.
00:52:02 --> 00:52:08 He really has. And them two used to... Byron Allen had a show on at the same time.
00:52:08 --> 00:52:10 Arsenio did at one time.
00:52:11 --> 00:52:15 But it didn't last long because of the popularity of Arsenio. Right, right. Yeah.
00:52:17 --> 00:52:22 But anyway, I just wanted to... Hearing the interviews that I heard recently,
00:52:22 --> 00:52:28 Arsenio, of course, he was in one of the greatest movies ever made coming to America.
00:52:28 --> 00:52:36 You know and you know you know that was just a great great time so but I just
00:52:36 --> 00:52:42 wanted to bring that up because I thought it was a great moment in TV history so.
00:52:44 --> 00:52:48 Tell us your favorite shows with the Arsenio Hall show I'm sure there's some
00:52:48 --> 00:52:53 that I didn't talk about that you guys probably remember so definitely let us
00:52:53 --> 00:52:56 know what you are thinking about your favorite moments That's,
00:52:58 --> 00:53:01 Okay, and that brings us to Leonard's favorite part of the show.
00:53:02 --> 00:53:05 I actually get to do it this week since I'm not muted at this point.
00:53:06 --> 00:53:07 Yet, muted yet.
00:53:10 --> 00:53:16 So with this heat out here, this is my question that I was thinking about today.
00:53:17 --> 00:53:24 When the weather is unbearably hot and you don't feel like cooking because it's so hot,
00:53:24 --> 00:53:32 What are the three things that you want to eat or drink all during all the time
00:53:32 --> 00:53:33 in this hot weather, I should say?
00:53:34 --> 00:53:37 All right. So, Dave, I'm going to go with the blackness first.
00:53:38 --> 00:53:42 Okay. Give me some watermelon, some cold watermelon.
00:53:42 --> 00:53:45 Okay. All right. All right.
00:53:46 --> 00:53:49 Cliché, but go ahead. Cliché all the way.
00:53:50 --> 00:53:55 But the second thing is probably going to be, and this is, and I don't know,
00:53:55 --> 00:54:01 I feel like now when I'm thirsty, thirsty, if I'm not drinking water, give me a vitamin water.
00:54:04 --> 00:54:07 You can tell these new age people, they got to drink vitamin water.
00:54:07 --> 00:54:10 Yeah. Okay. Give me a vitamin water.
00:54:10 --> 00:54:13 Okay. Third.
00:54:15 --> 00:54:19 By the way, people, you notice he didn't say flavor. He said it's got to be red.
00:54:21 --> 00:54:26 Yeah, because I don't know what flavor that is, but that's the red one.
00:54:26 --> 00:54:30 But you know that's old school because, you know, when we break Kool-Aid,
00:54:30 --> 00:54:35 we didn't call it by the flavor. We went by the color, you know, so, yeah.
00:54:36 --> 00:54:40 I know. I'm black, too. Okay. You have your moments.
00:54:40 --> 00:54:47 You have your moments. Go ahead. For the third one, if I'm really don't feel like cooking.
00:54:50 --> 00:54:54 I'm trying not to say anything dessertish because for some reason,
00:54:54 --> 00:54:57 if it's unbearably hot, I don't want any cold dessert.
00:55:00 --> 00:55:05 Oh, man, what would it be? I don't know what that third one would be.
00:55:06 --> 00:55:09 Wow. Back in the day, it would probably be some cereal and milk.
00:55:13 --> 00:55:17 I guess the milk had to be ice cold. No, boy, I mean, you know,
00:55:17 --> 00:55:19 it's coming out of the refrigerator, so it's already cold anyway.
00:55:20 --> 00:55:26 But nowadays, I don't do cereal and milk, so I don't know. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Dave.
00:55:27 --> 00:55:32 Okay, back in the day it would have been some J-E-L-L-O,
00:55:33 --> 00:55:37 You and Bill Cosby? Yeah. All right. Yeah.
00:55:38 --> 00:55:41 Yeah. Okay. All right. Did you do the Jell-O pops too?
00:55:42 --> 00:55:48 No. Oh, okay. Yeah, we just made our Jell-O in a container. Okay. Dave, what about you?
00:55:48 --> 00:55:53 When the weather is unbearably hot and you don't feel like cooking,
00:55:53 --> 00:55:59 what are the three things that you want to eat or drink all the time in hot weather?
00:56:00 --> 00:56:05 Well, the first thing, and when it comes to eating, It had to be a sub.
00:56:06 --> 00:56:09 Okay. Back in the day, it would have been a nice Italian sub,
00:56:09 --> 00:56:12 but since I don't eat pork anymore. You don't eat pork?
00:56:12 --> 00:56:16 No, I haven't eaten pork in over 30-something years, man. I didn't know that.
00:56:17 --> 00:56:21 Yeah, I don't eat pork at all. No. Oh, okay. And I used to love a good Italian
00:56:21 --> 00:56:23 sub. So, you don't do bacon?
00:56:24 --> 00:56:27 Turkey. Okay. Yeah, turkey.
00:56:28 --> 00:56:32 Yeah. You don't do pepperoni? Turkey. Oh, okay.
00:56:33 --> 00:56:37 I'll do beef pepperoni, but I ain't doing regular pepperoni.
00:56:37 --> 00:56:41 Gotcha. No. All I got pork in it, man. I don't eat it.
00:56:43 --> 00:56:47 So, yeah. So the first thing, but I'll still eat a nice sub,
00:56:47 --> 00:56:49 nice turkey sub. I'm good with that.
00:56:50 --> 00:56:53 I don't, you know, it's perfect. I got to make sure it's a chill on it.
00:56:53 --> 00:56:58 So if I buy it, I put it in the refrigerator for a little bit so it can get
00:56:58 --> 00:57:03 even cooler and good, you know. So that'd be the first thing.
00:57:05 --> 00:57:12 There's nothing like a glass full of ice and some lemonade. Okay.
00:57:13 --> 00:57:16 Good lemonade, man, really quints the thirst.
00:57:17 --> 00:57:23 So I can always do a lemonade that's always good. Water ice.
00:57:24 --> 00:57:29 And I had to get the good stuff, so I would have to go into Wilmington to get the good stuff.
00:57:29 --> 00:57:40 You know, either Double Slice or Yachty's or my boy Dino D, water ice in Wilmington.
00:57:40 --> 00:57:43 But all of those, you know, the guy had some good water ice.
00:57:44 --> 00:57:46 You know, Rita's in the pen, too. I mean.
00:57:48 --> 00:57:52 Rita's is good, but, you know, it's not like the stuff you get in Wilmington.
00:57:52 --> 00:57:54 You know what I mean? Gotcha. Yeah.
00:57:55 --> 00:58:00 And then I'm going to actually throw in there as a caveat, some ice cream,
00:58:00 --> 00:58:03 man. You can't go wrong with ice cream, man. You got to have ice cream.
00:58:05 --> 00:58:08 You know, I always feel like ice cream doesn't quench my thirst.
00:58:08 --> 00:58:14 I mean, it may quench my hotness, like if I'm hot.
00:58:14 --> 00:58:19 Yeah. But, you know, as far as being thirsty, but I get it. Sometimes I leave
00:58:19 --> 00:58:23 work, man. I'll go over to Chick-fil-A and just get an ice cream cold. Oh, really?
00:58:24 --> 00:58:25 Yeah. You ever have one of the ice cream cones?
00:58:27 --> 00:58:30 Yeah. I'm not a big... I mean, yes, I have. I'm sorry.
00:58:32 --> 00:58:38 He's such a little old people, you know. So you don't like ice cream cones or whatever?
00:58:39 --> 00:58:43 You know, sometimes I'm a little lactose intolerant, so the ice cream starts making my stomach hurt.
00:58:44 --> 00:58:48 Okay. Yeah. Then he goes and blow up the bathroom. Okay. I get it. All right. So, no.
00:58:49 --> 00:58:53 I don't know how old that guy is really in real life, people.
00:58:53 --> 00:58:59 But he claims he claims he's you know well he's coming up 150 so i know too
00:58:59 --> 00:59:03 quick yeah well do you have plans for 50 you got big plans.
00:59:05 --> 00:59:09 Yeah, they're still in the works. Okay, all right, okay, all right.
00:59:10 --> 00:59:16 Yeah, well, I'm sure we'll hear about him, folks, as he turns 50.
00:59:16 --> 00:59:17 Y'all hear about him before.
00:59:18 --> 00:59:22 Yeah, okay, he'll be out there bungee jumping or whatever. I wouldn't do that
00:59:22 --> 00:59:25 because, you know, they just had a bungee cord that snapped recently.
00:59:25 --> 00:59:28 Did you hear about that? No, I didn't. People died, yeah, yeah.
00:59:29 --> 00:59:34 But anyway, all right, folks, tell us what your favorite things to eat on.
