00:00:19 --> 00:00:25 Jackson. Today, we're delving into a case that has haunted a small Delaware
00:00:25 --> 00:00:33 community since 2014, The disappearance of 33-year-old Nefertiri Trader.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:38 Nefertiri, a loving mother, daughter, and friend, vanished from her home in
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 Newcastle, Delaware, without a trace.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:46 Nearly a decade later, her family and the community are still searching for answers.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:51 What happened to Nefertiri Trader? Who took her? And why?
00:00:52 --> 00:00:58 Grab your headphones, settle in, and join me as we explore the chilling details
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 of this unsolved mystery.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:05 Before we dive into the night, she disappeared. Let's take a moment to remember
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 who Nefertiri Trader was.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:15 Born and raised in Delaware, Nefertiri, or Nefi, as her loved ones affectionately
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 called her, was a devoted mother to three children.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:24 She was described as loving, kind-hearted, and deeply committed to her family.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 Her friends remember her as someone who brought laughter into any room she entered.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:37 Her children were her world, and she was the type of mother who always put their needs first.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:42 Despite facing challenges, like so many of us do, Nefertiri remained resilient.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:49 She had plans, dreams, and the will to provide a good life for her family and
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 was employed with the housekeeping department at a local hospital.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:58 On June 29th, 2014, those dreams came to a screeching halt.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:04 It was a quiet Sunday night in the Saddlebrook neighborhood of Newcastle, Delaware.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 Nefertiri Trader had spent the evening at home, a place she should have been safe.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 But in the early hours of June 30th, something went terribly wrong.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:21 Around 4 a.m., after what looked to be a not-so-unusual late-night,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:27 early-morning drive to a nearby 7-Eleven, a neighbor reported looking out his
00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 second-story bedroom window after hearing a struggle outside of Nefertiri's home.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:39 They claimed to see a man forcing her into the backseat of her silver 2000 Acura RL.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:45 They said they did nothing because he assumed she was ill and was being taken to a hospital.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:51 The car sped off into the night, and Nefertiri hasn't been seen or heard from since.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:56 Her family became worried when they couldn't reach her shortly after she was
00:02:56 --> 00:02:58 supposed to have returned home from work.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 At 6 p.m., her family went to her home.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 When they arrived, what they found sent chills down their spines.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 On her front porch, they discovered an open pack of Newport cigarettes,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:18 a cup of coffee, a stomp loaf of bread on the front lawn, and a single unopened
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 condom sitting on a porch chair.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:26 These are items she had reportedly purchased from the nearby convenience store
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 shortly before she vanished. Then there were her fleas.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 One right next to the other, near the front door of her home.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 Inside the house, nothing appeared out of place.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:43 There were no signs of a break-in or a violent struggle. It was as if Nefertiri
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 had vanished into thin air.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 The Newcastle County Police Department immediately launched an investigation.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:54 This initially revealed that Nefertiri didn't have a sketchy background,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 and nothing pointed to any nefarious characters in her life.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 Detective Matthew DiSipatino described her as a good and decent person.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 They classified the case as a kidnapping based on the neighbor's account.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:14 Her car, the Silver Acura RL, became a key focus of the investigation.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:21 It was listed as stolen and added to national databases in hopes of a break in the case.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 But here's where things become even more unsettling.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:30 Weeks turned into months, and there were no credible leads.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:36 Nefertiri's family felt that the case wasn't receiving the attention it deserved.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 A family member said, and I quote, We just want her home.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:48 Someone out there knows what happened to Nefertiri, and we need them to come forward. End of quote.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:54 Despite their pleas, the case grew colder with each passing day.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:59 Law enforcement admitted that they had few, if any, substantial leads.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:06 Was this a random abduction, or did someone close to Nefertiri betray her trust?
00:05:07 --> 00:05:14 Let's explore the theories. The first theory is that this was a crime of opportunity,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:20 a random act of violence, by someone who spotted Nefertiri during her late-night trip to the store.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:24 But this theory raises more questions than it answers.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 Why target her? Was someone watching her that night?
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 Another theory is that Nefertiri knew her abductor.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:38 It's not uncommon for perpetrators in cases like this to be someone the victim
00:05:38 --> 00:05:44 knows, an ex-partner, a friend, or even a casual acquaintance.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:50 But to this day, authorities have not publicly named any suspects or persons of interest.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:54 Then there's the possibility of human trafficking.
00:05:55 --> 00:06:00 Sadly, Delaware's location along major highways makes it a hotspot for trafficking activity.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 Could Nefertiri have been taken for this purpose?
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 Each theory brings us closer to understanding what might have happened,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:12 but none provides the answers her family so desperately needs.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 In the weeks following Nefertiri's disappearance, her family and friends rallied
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 together to search for her.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 Flyers were distributed, search parties combed through the area,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:25 and prayer vigils were held to keep her story alive.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:31 Local activist groups also joined the cause, calling for more attention to be
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 given to missing black women.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:38 According to the National Crime Information Center, black women make up a disproportionately
00:06:38 --> 00:06:41 high number of missing person cases in the United States.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:49 And yet, their stories often go underreported. The community's resilience and
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 determination to find answers have been unwavering.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:58 But without new leads, their efforts often feel like shouting into the void.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:06 In November 2014, five months after her disappearance, Nefertiri's car was discovered
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 in Wilmington, Delaware, about six miles away.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:14 The vehicle was abandoned and showed no obvious signs of foul play.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:18 This discovery raised even more questions.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:22 Who left the car there? And why?
00:07:23 --> 00:07:27 Investigators processed the vehicle for evidence, but if they found anything
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 substantial, they've kept it under wraps.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:35 Carr's recovery provided a small glimmer of hope and deepened the mystery.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:40 The case remains at a standstill with no suspects and no clear motive.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:47 The FBI continues to offer $20 for tips leading to an arrest,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:53 and county police are offering up to $10 for information in the case.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:58 Nefertiri Trader's case is a heartbreaking example of a broader issue.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:06 According to the Black and Missing Foundation, nearly 40% of missing persons in the U.S.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:12 Are people of color, And yet, their stories often receive far less media coverage
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 than those of their white counterparts.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:21 This disparity has real consequences. Media attention can generate tips,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:26 put pressure on law enforcement, and keep a case alive in the public eye.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:31 When a case like Nefertyri's is ignored, it sends a message that some lives
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 are valued more than others.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 As a community, we must demand better.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:43 We must amplify these stories, not just for justice, but for the families who
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 are left behind searching for answers.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 So, where do we go from here?
