00:00:01 --> 00:00:03 Hello, hello, hello everyone. This is

00:00:03 --> 00:00:05 Demia Avery of the Demia Avery Show. So,

00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 listen, they had the hits, they had the

00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 moment, they had record label deals,

00:00:12 --> 00:00:14 they were the ish back then. Everybody

00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 talked about them. Everybody talked

00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 about their song, sang their song,

00:00:19 --> 00:00:20 couldn't wait for their videos to come

00:00:20 --> 00:00:24 on, all of that. And then they just

00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 disappeared. So, today we're going to

00:00:26 --> 00:00:28 talk about just a few. We're going to

00:00:28 --> 00:00:29 talk about Moch and Steph. We're going

00:00:29 --> 00:00:32 to talk about Groove Theory. Uh who

00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 else? Rough Ends ideal as Yet. We're

00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 going to talk about these groups and

00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 let's see what really happened. Lights,

00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 camera, action. Let's shine tonight. Big

00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 dreams, big names, and the Vs.

00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 We'll talk passion, purpose, power, and

00:00:52 --> 00:00:54 goals.

00:00:54 --> 00:01:06 Stories you ain't never been told.

00:01:06 --> 00:01:08 Hey. Hey everybody. Thank you so much

00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 for joining back in with me today. We're

00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 going to talk about some of the groups

00:01:12 --> 00:01:15 in the '9s. Now, if you're a '9s child,

00:01:15 --> 00:01:17 well, not necessarily the '9s baby, but

00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 if you were like in your teenage years,

00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 going into your college years, or even

00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 some adult years, um you enjoyed the

00:01:25 --> 00:01:28 music. It was all about the lyrics. It

00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 was the performance. Hey, it was the

00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 performance. It was about a lot of

00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 groups. It was about har har har har har

00:01:36 --> 00:01:36 har har har har har har har har har har

00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 har har har har har harmony and you'd

00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 have to actually be able to sing and it

00:01:41 --> 00:01:43 was just you had to get on stage and you

00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 had to to put on some type of

00:01:45 --> 00:01:47 performance, you know, before things

00:01:47 --> 00:01:51 changed a little bit. But the '9s was

00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 absolutely one of my favorite eras of

00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 music. Now, for every

00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 um artist that became legends, like Boys

00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 to Men, I'm going to say Drew Hill

00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 because they're legends to me. Um people

00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 like that. For every legends, there were

00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 also those that made a great impact with

00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 one or two songs. You might have seen

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 them do a little tour here and there,

00:02:16 --> 00:02:18 but that their main thing was those one

00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 or two songs, but even when you hear

00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 them now, they bring back memories. So,

00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 I want to get straight into that and

00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 tell a little bit about why they may

00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 have disappeared. All right, let's go.

00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 Okay, so first up, we have Mochen Stef.

00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 Y'all remember the song He's Mine? You

00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 might have had them once, but I got him

00:02:37 --> 00:02:44 all the time. You can't sleep at night.

00:02:44 --> 00:02:51 And that whole thing was a was a groove.

00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 I love Moch and Steph.

00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 Okay guys, so let's talk a little bit

00:02:56 --> 00:02:58 about Moch and Steph. Now the name Moch

00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 and Stef wasn't just random. It was the

00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 first two letters of their names,

00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 Monifeh, Kenya, and Stephanie. These

00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 three were signed to Outburst Records

00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 and gave us one of the biggest hits of

00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 the mid 90s. But after that, silence.

00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 Now, why they vanished? Well, allegedly,

00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 it wasn't their fault. It was the

00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 business. Their label struggled to

00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 promote a second single. And by the time

00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 they were ready for album number two,

00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 the buzz had died and the label

00:03:30 --> 00:03:32 situation got messy. Allegedly, they

00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 were dropped, disbanded, and reportedly

00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 went back to their regular lives. A true

00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 one-hit wonder in every sense of the

00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 word.

00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 All right, next up, we have the group as

00:03:45 --> 00:03:49 Yet, oh man, the harmonies was amazing.

00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 Last night,

00:03:51 --> 00:03:57 I was inside of you. Yeah. Last night

00:03:57 --> 00:04:02 while I made love to you, I saw the sun,

00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 the moon, the mountains, and the rivers.

00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 I saw heaven when I makes me love to

00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 you.

00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 I know I got the wrong the words wrong,

00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 but but here we go anyway.

00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 All right, guys. So, the next group is

00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 As Yet. Now, these guys have vocals that

00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 can melt butter. between last night and

00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 their cover. Hard to say. I'm sorry.

00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 They were everywhere in the '9s. And

00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 they even went platinum. Now, why they

00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 vanished, it's a lot of rumors, a lot of

00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 people saying things, I don't know. But

00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 allegedly, it was Ego and lineup

00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 changes. Their lead singer, Mark Nelson,

00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 who was originally in Boys to Men, by

00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 the way, left the group early to go

00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 solo. So losing the lead, I mean they

00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 had all of them had great voices, so any

00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 one of them could lead, but I don't know

00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 if that just kind of just stirred the

00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 pot a little bit. But combined that with

00:04:55 --> 00:04:58 the constant restructuring at Leface

00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 Records in the '90s, they kind of got

00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 lost in the shuffle. They have reunited

00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 in various forms over the years, and

00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 they're still phenomenal, but they never

00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 just recaptured that original 1996

00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 magic.

00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 Now, I remember when this song came out,

00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 I was like, man, this they their vi it's

00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 it's more about their vibe. But Amelu,

00:05:21 --> 00:05:24 is that her name? Oh my gosh, that chick

00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 know she can sing.

00:05:26 --> 00:05:30 Tell me if you want me to give you all

00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 my time. I want to make it good for you

00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 cuz you blow my mind. I promise, boy,

00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 that I'll be true.

00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 You're the perfect. So tell me if you

00:05:43 --> 00:05:47 want me to.

00:05:47 --> 00:05:51 I've been doing my own thing. Love is

00:05:51 --> 00:05:55 helping

00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 bad time.

00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 And to my surprise, I know y'all want to

00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 hear from them. So here we go.

00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 All right. So how about a little groove

00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 theory? Yes. Amelu and Bryce Wilson.

00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 Yes, they were great lookers. Um if if

00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 you know what I'm saying. So anyway,

00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 they had impeccable chemistry. Their

00:06:17 --> 00:06:21 1995 hit, Tell Me, was smooth, cool, and

00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 different. Everyone was waiting for the

00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 second album to take over the world, but

00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 it just never happened. Why did they

00:06:28 --> 00:06:31 vanish? Allegedly, this is the classic

00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 case of the breakout star. Alaroo wanted

00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 to pursue her own creative path and she

00:06:36 --> 00:06:39 left the group in 1999 for a solo

00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 career. Rice actually tried to replace

00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 her with a new singer named Makita Davis

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 and recorded a second album called The

00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 Answer, but the label they sheld it

00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 without a male. The theory just didn't

00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 work. Al went on to having a great solo

00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 career while Bryce moved into acting and

00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 production.

00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 Okay, so the next group up it. Look,

00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 this was one of my favorite summer

00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 songs, man. I didn't know all the words

00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 to it, but I sure knew the the beat. No

00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 more shopping sprees. No more late night

00:07:11 --> 00:07:15 creams. No more. Y'all remember? Yes.

00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 Yes. Yes. Rough ends. Let's talk about

00:07:17 --> 00:07:20 them. All right, y'all. So, here we go.

00:07:20 --> 00:07:25 Rough ends. Yes. So David Dainc Chance

00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 and Dante Chai Jordan had the streets on

00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 lock in 2000 with the song No More. They

00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 actually scored a second hit with

00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 Someone to Love You, proving they

00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 weren't just a fluke. Why they vanished?

00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 Well, allegedly, Creative Differences

00:07:41 --> 00:07:44 split this duo right down the middle in

00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 2004. David wanted to focus on urban

00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 gospel and inspirational music, while

00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 Chai wanted to stay R&B. They went their

00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 separate ways for a decade, but there is

00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 a happy ending here. They put their

00:07:57 --> 00:08:01 differences aside, reunited around 2016,

00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 and are actually touring and releasing

00:08:03 --> 00:08:06 music again. So, this one is a parent

00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 disappearance that actually got solved.

00:08:08 --> 00:08:11 I love it.

00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 All right, guys. So, this was the

00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 perfect song for for people that was

00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 like, you know, go ahead. You better get

00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 on. You better go ahead. I ain't trying

00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 to hear what you got to say. Y'all

00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 remember think you better leave leave me

00:08:24 --> 00:08:28 alone. Alone. Pack your bags. Get the

00:08:28 --> 00:08:31 hell on. Yeah. Ideal. Let's see what

00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 happened with Ideal.

00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 All right, y'all. So, this is the last

00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 group of the day. Now, this quartet out

00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 of Houston is called Ideal. So, they

00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 seem ready for the long haul. They

00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 looked apart and they sound apart. But

00:08:46 --> 00:08:49 after that debut album, they completely

00:08:49 --> 00:08:53 ghosted us. Why they vanished? Well, the

00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 rumors are and allegedly the industry is

00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 cruel.

00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 Ideal was signed to Virgin Records right

00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 when the label was going through massive

00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 changes in their urban division. When

00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 executives get fired, the groups they

00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 signed often get shelved as well. Ideal

00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 got caught in that whole thing and they

00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 were unable to release music but unable

00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 to leave as well. They quietly disbanded

00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 and unlike other groups, they haven't

00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 made much noise about a reunion. All

00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 right, guys. So, I hope you had fun

00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 today. I hope you enjoyed this episode.

00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 Make sure you hit that subscribe button

00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 and we're gonna have much more fun, more

00:09:29 --> 00:09:32 episodes like this. I hope you enjoyed

00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 it. I talk to you later. Bye.
