00:00:13 --> 00:00:20 All right, y'all, get ready for another edition of News and Trends with your host, Dave and Lynn.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:26 Music.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:25 Welcome,
00:00:32 --> 00:00:39 welcome, welcome to News and Trends with Dave and Lynn, now hosted on the MBG Podcast Network.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:44 I am one of your hosts, Mr. David Coker, proprietor of Dave Mark Inc.,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:51 promoter, event planner, all-around good guy, hanging out with my partner, Mr. Leonard Young.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 What's going on, sir? Hey, Dave. Everything is good. This is Leonard Young,
00:00:55 --> 00:01:01 CEO of National Black Guide, DelawareBlack.com, black media expert,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 and all-around good guy. How's it going, Dave?
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 It's gone, man. It's gone. Can't play. I hear that.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:13 Made it through another week. Had a rough week last week at the Apologize Bar.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 Listen, I know you heard me coughing and hacking. No excuses.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:22 Yeah, I know. But I'm like a trooper, man. You know, I made it through.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 I was there. I was there for the call, you know.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:28 It's just funny. When you have these colds nowadays, though,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 you can feel better physically.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 Right. But it's always that lingering cough. that doesn't want to go anywhere.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 I don't get that. It's just like something that's been happening,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:44 And almost everybody talked about it. You know, it seemed like it just started
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 happening like over the last, what, 10 years or so that people have been getting
00:01:48 --> 00:01:49 this lingering call for something.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 Yeah, probably. I mean, I can definitely remember it. I don't remember it early
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 in life, earlier in life, you know. Yeah.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 You know, I can definitely relate because I'll be home all day.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 Fine. And then as soon as I go out and try to talk to somebody, just start calling.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 Yeah. Yeah, I'm like, you know, I was just home all day, no coughing,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 no sniffling, no runny nose.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:17 And then as soon as I go out, so, I mean, clearly it must be something outside.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 I don't know what it is. Yeah, it's got to be, man. It's got to be.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 It's got to be something in the air.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 It's got to be something in the building that we work in or,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:30 you know, or that, you know, in the environment that we spend most of our day in.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 Because i just don't you know remember this
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 happening as you know coming up most of
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 my life and like just thing like and
00:02:39 --> 00:02:44 it's not just one thing if it's just you but if you talk to anybody who has
00:02:44 --> 00:02:50 a call everybody talks about that call that they have at the end you know i'll
00:02:50 --> 00:02:55 say definitely widespread yeah yeah it is definitely something that's widespread
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 so but other than that Matt, everything is good, man. Can't complain.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 Just bummed out the Eagles got beat the way they did this past weekend,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 man. That was ridiculous.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 You know, they could have stayed home for all of that, you know.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:19 I'm sure. Yeah, to go flying down to Tampa and get beat like that wasn't good. Right. Yeah.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:25 Then, of course, I got a little bummed out that they heard another one of our
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 favorites growing up. No one of mine.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 I know somebody I know you are definitely familiar with.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:38 Not only for the one iconic role that he was most familiar for,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:46 but also some of the other roles that he played, and especially Mr.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:52 McDowell coming to America that the dying name has passed away today.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:57 It's funny. I just saw a conflicting report. They said that he's probably been
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 there for a while, but they just announced it. I don't know.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:06 Oh, wow. So I do know that he had moved with his son definitely and maybe other
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 family and he had moved to Africa.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 So he had been living in Africa the last couple of years.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 Oh, he wasn't. that because I know he had some issues with his daughter or something.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:18 There was something going on.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:22 There was, you know, there was some kind of conflicting reports.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:30 I know he was here in Delaware when they did the good times reunion thing. Oh, was he? Oh, wow.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 I didn't know that. Yeah, he came here.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:43 So, you know, he was like the first real TV dad for me,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 you know, coming up of color,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:51 you know, you know, I mean, you know, of course, Cosby kind of came along later
00:04:51 --> 00:04:57 on, kind of changed the game up, but, you know, James Evans was somebody that
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 I could relate to, because he kind of, that family was...
00:05:01 --> 00:05:04 On good times was a family i could relate to because
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 they lived in the project i lived in the projects at
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 the time when we when we first moved in the
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 project my mother and father were there you know you know
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 my so i mean i could relate to the whole deal you know what i mean so well hold
00:05:17 --> 00:05:25 on dave did y'all have a uh was it verona next door there was a look let me
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 tell you something man in the
00:05:27 --> 00:05:32 project there's always a walona always at least one or Or at least one.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:35 It could be like up to two or three of them. But there's always a Walona,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 man. I can tell you that for sure.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:41 We had them all over my neighborhood. Yeah, yeah. We had them all over our neighborhood. The Ducie neighbor.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:47 Yeah. I mean, that show was very stereotypical most neighborhoods.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:53 Because it really had a little bit of, you know, they had Ned the Wino.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 You know, everybody knew that Wino in the neighborhood. That alcoholic guy.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:03 You know, there was always the, you know, the bad kids and the good kids.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:08 I mean, you know, so that show was pretty, pretty uniquely done.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:15 So and of course, you know, he played our favorite father on Coming to America, Mr.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:20 McDowell. That was that was a hilarious character that he played. Yeah, definitely.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:26 And, you know, I didn't even realize it till today when I saw that video.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:30 Video, James Earl Jones and John Amos, both of them, you know,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 passed away in about within two weeks of each other.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 Yeah. Yeah. It's amazing.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 I mean, we're losing a lot of legends. I thought the other day,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 what was it yesterday? I think it was yesterday.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:45 I see some flash on my phone about Marla Gibbs.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:51 And I said, oh, man, I guess she passed, too. And no, it was her celebrating
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 her 93rd birthday. Oh, wow.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 I was like, wow. And she used to be a customer of mine. I used to talk to her
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 on the phone all the time.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:05 Yeah, yeah. Dave, you had to hurry up and explain that, okay?
00:07:06 --> 00:07:10 Well, I remember I told you I worked for this distribution company.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:15 We used to represent all these companies, like the Cheesecake Factory.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 Remember, I told you we used to ship the cakes back and forth.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:26 It was a number of companies. Well, there was this health food bar that came out.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 And they're in the stores now. You'll see them. They're called Coco Via.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:37 When they first came out, the company that brought them out, they had us.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 You know, we were their distribution company for them.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:45 And so we used to order these. People who wanted to order these.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 And these things are heart healthy.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 And actually, they were very good candy bars, too.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:55 And, you know, people could order them. It would help with lowering your cholesterol,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 all of that stuff, you know.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 And so when people used to order them through our company.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:08 So one of the first calls that I ever took on that candy bar was from Marla Gibbs.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:12 But this was what was so funny about it
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 was like because we took calls all over the country so
00:08:15 --> 00:08:21 what was so funny about it was the fact that when she said she wanted to order
00:08:21 --> 00:08:26 the candy you know i heard the voice and i thought you know i said this voice
00:08:26 --> 00:08:30 sounds familiar and i knew it was an older lady now we're talking about back
00:08:30 --> 00:08:34 in this i worked for this company back around 99,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 2000, somewhere around there.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 So she...
00:08:40 --> 00:08:44 Said I wanted to, she wanted to order a couple of packs of the candy and whatever.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:49 And he said, it really looked good. And I went over everything with her because
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 she wanted to know all about the can.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:54 And then I said, okay, well, I need to get some information to you.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:58 So, you know, you know, she went on and did the purchase and everything.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 And she said, I need to get some information from you as far as the shipping address.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:06 What do you want to send? So she gave me her ad. She started giving me her address
00:09:06 --> 00:09:10 and she said, you know, and I kept looking at her name.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 It said Marla Gibbs, but I just, you know, you know, of course,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 I'm thinking it could be anybody. Right, right.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:21 But then she says, Los Angeles, California. And I said, wait.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:30 You know, I said, is this Marla Gibbs from Jefferson and 227?
00:09:30 --> 00:09:35 And she just got real quiet and started, you know, I could hear her laughing a little bit.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:39 And she said, yeah. I said, oh, my God. Like that, right? Right.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:44 I said, if you hadn't said Los Angeles, I wouldn't have thought it was you, you know.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:48 But when you said Los Angeles, California, that's what made me think it was you.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 And then she said, she said, it's me. She said, I was hoping that we're going
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 to get off this call without you knowing.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:57 And I started laughing. I said, no, I said, look, I've been watching your shows
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 for a long time. I said, I know who you are.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:04 So we kind of laughed and joked about it a little bit.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 And then she said, well, when I need to reorder, can I just talk to you until
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 I happen to talk to somebody else or whatever?
00:10:09 --> 00:10:12 So anytime she would reorder, she would ask to speak to me.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:17 Oh, wow. And so that's how, you know, that's my Marla Gibbs story.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 But she used to order quite often from us.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:23 She really liked that candy. So, you know, so.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:30 So, that was my brush for greatness. All right. Well, there it is.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:34 Miss Marla gives Dave Coker a phone conversation.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:42 Not phone sex, but this conversation, okay? But she just turned 93 yesterday. Wow, that's amazing.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:45 You know, over the weekend, I think it was, over the weekend, she turned 93.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:49 Three so so but hats off
00:10:49 --> 00:10:52 our condolences to you know john
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 amos's family and he will be missed
00:10:55 --> 00:11:01 he was a great actor and definitely a very influential person in most of our
00:11:01 --> 00:11:05 lives he played some very organic i mean keep in mind he was in roots he was
00:11:05 --> 00:11:13 in coming to one of my favorite even though know it wasn't the best this series but you know he was in the,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 what you call movies.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:22 Movies die hard he
00:11:22 --> 00:11:27 was in the die hard movie the second one the second one and you know I almost
00:11:27 --> 00:11:34 forgot he was also in the players club too oh yeah you're right he was the police
00:11:34 --> 00:11:38 officer I saw someone yeah I saw someone skit,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:43 on uh social media today and i was like damn i i forgot he was in that movie
00:11:43 --> 00:11:47 yeah he was definitely in that movie he's done a lot of things over the years
00:11:47 --> 00:11:52 so uh he definitely will be missed man we're looking for a lot of our legends man we really are so,
00:11:54 --> 00:12:00 well i just wanted to make sure i mentioned that so all right i guess we could
00:12:00 --> 00:12:04 go ahead and get ready to get into some some stuff that we have to talk about
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 where i'm sure we got a lot to say right and.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:16 This first story, I'll tell you, we're just in a sad state in time right now.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 I'm going to put it that way.
00:12:18 --> 00:12:24 But this one is Mel Madness, and that's M-A-I-L.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:29 Michigan man attacks postal worker with knife over Kamala Harris.
00:12:30 --> 00:12:34 And the story goes, a Michigan man, Russell Frank Below,
00:12:34 --> 00:12:41 61, It's facing serious charges that the allegedly assaulted a female postal
00:12:41 --> 00:12:49 worker Thursday evening because of a political flyer featuring Vice President Kamala Harris.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:52 According to the CBS News in Detroit,
00:12:53 --> 00:13:00 the Farmington Hills resident was enraged after receiving the flyer and reportedly
00:13:00 --> 00:13:04 hurled racial slurs at the postal carrier, calling her a black bee.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:08 Before lunging at
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 her with a knife the postal worker
00:13:11 --> 00:13:14 quick on her feet defended herself by using
00:13:14 --> 00:13:24 her UPS issue pepper spray I like that Valoo was later arrested by a Farmington
00:13:24 --> 00:13:32 Hills police and in a neighbor's yard the hateful altercation easily could have
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 turned deadly with the malicious,
00:13:34 --> 00:13:41 malicious maga man pulling a knife on a black woman just doing her job the usps
00:13:41 --> 00:13:48 mantra covers rain sleet and slow snow but it doesn't say anything about knife
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 fights with rancid races.
00:13:52 --> 00:14:00 The loo was charged with one felony count of ethnic intimidation i didn't know that was a thing Okay.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:05 And a misdemeanor count of assault and battery.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:08 He was arraigned, pleaded not guilty.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:13 Get that. Not guilty. That sounds familiar. That sounds like the top MAGA person.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:18 And was released on a $25 bond.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:24 If convicted of ethnic intimidation, he faces up to two years in prison and
00:14:24 --> 00:14:29 a fine of up to $5. Now, I'm going to stop right there.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:35 Doesn't that sound kind of low, considering if she didn't react the way she
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 did, he could have killed her.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:42 Yeah. And it was racially motivated. And it was racially motivated because nobody
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 was the other way around.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:48 Maybe potentially a hate crime, you know, or a hate crime attempt.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:53 Yeah. We know if it was the other way around, we wouldn't be talking about no
00:14:53 --> 00:14:57 two years and $5. Right. I mean you know.
00:14:58 --> 00:15:05 And it says, and keep in mind, this is, this comes behind an Oakley County prosecutor,
00:15:05 --> 00:15:11 Karen McDonald, who was overseeing the case, emphasizes the gravity of the incident.
00:15:11 --> 00:15:19 This incident is coming days after Harris campaign, the Harris campaign office in Arizona was shot up.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:25 So much hate around a woman who's making history.
00:15:26 --> 00:15:30 History this is you know anytime trump's
00:15:30 --> 00:15:33 involved the world has got this
00:15:33 --> 00:15:39 goes crazy as far as the the racial tension and everything that's going on even
00:15:39 --> 00:15:43 and i'm even saying this right here folks i mean for you guys have been paying
00:15:43 --> 00:15:52 attention even coincidentally and and and even though it is coinciding with the election.
00:15:53 --> 00:16:01 With Caitlyn Clark coming into the WNBA, it has caused a lot of racial craziness as well.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:06 There's, you know, there's been a lot of problems at a lot of the arenas with
00:16:06 --> 00:16:13 racist fans who are calling themselves protecting Caitlyn Clark.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:18 You know, and they're especially going after.
00:16:19 --> 00:16:24 African-american fans i mean yeah
00:16:24 --> 00:16:27 no i mean it where are we right now what
00:16:27 --> 00:16:31 world are we in you know it's definitely universe it's definitely crazy i saw
00:16:31 --> 00:16:36 an interview with um angel reese and she was talking about caitlyn clark she
00:16:36 --> 00:16:40 said you know they're they're not enemies you know she i mean she didn't make
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 it sound like they were friends but you know they're core to each other and
00:16:43 --> 00:16:45 they both understand the game,
00:16:46 --> 00:16:51 but the fans took it to another level, putting, you know, all that beef between them.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:56 And I didn't know, they said that they had been playing against each other since
00:16:56 --> 00:16:58 like middle school or high school. They were kids.
00:16:58 --> 00:17:02 Yeah, so, I mean, they're not new to each other, but, you know,
00:17:02 --> 00:17:06 I think what it is, and, you know, I almost think about it like WWF wrestling.
00:17:07 --> 00:17:11 Well, maybe not quite like that because, you know, they promote some of it,
00:17:11 --> 00:17:17 But, you know, we are watching stuff one sided and we don't know what type of
00:17:17 --> 00:17:19 relationship they have, you know, with each other.
00:17:19 --> 00:17:21 So, I mean, I, you know, I just think it's crazy.
00:17:21 --> 00:17:26 But I do agree. I think the fans are taking it to another level and they're
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 making they're making it into something it's not.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:33 Yeah. And that's exactly what it is, because, you know, there's been over the
00:17:33 --> 00:17:37 last two weeks, it's been a lot of conversations with the basketball players,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 the female basketball player.
00:17:39 --> 00:17:44 And a lot of them have said some of the things that have been said to them from
00:17:44 --> 00:17:50 fans who are wearing Caitlyn's jerseys and all of that kind of stuff.
00:17:50 --> 00:17:52 They're her college jersey, her pro jersey.
00:17:53 --> 00:17:56 And they're all, you know, saying these things and whatever.
00:17:56 --> 00:18:03 But this all comes back to the climate of the world and where we are right now
00:18:03 --> 00:18:08 with, you know, the top hate person, you know.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:14 You know, the fact that we even have Donald Trump still running for president
00:18:14 --> 00:18:21 when we know, you know, he you know, the only people he likes are the people
00:18:21 --> 00:18:23 that are going to help him get elected.
00:18:24 --> 00:18:29 You know, you know, if he doesn't have any use for you anymore,
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 you don't see him anymore.
00:18:30 --> 00:18:34 I mean, like we talked about a couple of weeks. Has anybody seen Herschel Walker lately?
00:18:37 --> 00:18:42 And, you know, Tim Scott was supposed to be his boy. Have you seen him at any
00:18:42 --> 00:18:45 of these rallies standing right next to him? No, not at all.
00:18:46 --> 00:18:49 No. You know, so I mean, so you think about it.
00:18:50 --> 00:18:53 You know, he he definitely is a very calculating person.
00:18:54 --> 00:18:58 And the world is just falling into that type of pattern.
00:18:58 --> 00:19:04 When you have people doing stuff like this and charging after a female with
00:19:04 --> 00:19:10 a knife because of a flyer, where are we? What kind of world are we living in?
00:19:10 --> 00:19:14 Well, Dave, the thing I always say is two things.
00:19:14 --> 00:19:20 President Trump's client base is not always the smartest, but they are diehard.
00:19:20 --> 00:19:24 And, you know, I'm not exactly sure why they are so diehard,
00:19:24 --> 00:19:30 because clearly they are missing, you know, some some key facts about Trump.
00:19:30 --> 00:19:35 But, you know, I mean, I just think it's so crazy that his people,
00:19:35 --> 00:19:41 I kid you not, if he told his people to do illegal things like,
00:19:41 --> 00:19:44 you know, let's say the January 6th riots.
00:19:44 --> 00:19:47 Right they would do them there would
00:19:47 --> 00:19:50 be a there would be a lot of them out there who take it into their own hands
00:19:50 --> 00:19:57 to kind of do what he say and make sure what he wants to get done yeah yeah
00:19:57 --> 00:20:05 i i definitely believe that yeah i definitely believe that i saw where a.
00:20:07 --> 00:20:10 Woman in philadelphia says she was her and her girlfriend was
00:20:10 --> 00:20:14 sitting having lunch and you
00:20:14 --> 00:20:17 know now she did she did say we made
00:20:17 --> 00:20:20 a mistake and started talking about politics
00:20:20 --> 00:20:23 and of course you know you got
00:20:23 --> 00:20:26 to be real careful when you talk politics in open air you
00:20:26 --> 00:20:30 know what i'm saying around other people because you never know who's listening
00:20:30 --> 00:20:35 and you never know how people probably every night so they're you know her and
00:20:35 --> 00:20:41 her girlfriend now she's black the girlfriend's white so but they you know they
00:20:41 --> 00:20:45 start talking about the trump and kamala harris thing and.
00:20:46 --> 00:20:54 Apparently both of them were pro harris you know and so there was a woman who
00:20:54 --> 00:20:58 was sitting across from them a white woman older white woman look what she said
00:20:58 --> 00:21:00 look like a hillbilly or something
00:21:00 --> 00:21:05 gets up and comes over to their table and said, neither one of you know what you're talking about.
00:21:06 --> 00:21:10 There's nothing that that woman is going to be able to do for this country that
00:21:10 --> 00:21:12 will make this country great again.
00:21:13 --> 00:21:18 Only one person can do that. And you're talking about the wrong one.
00:21:18 --> 00:21:23 And so they looked at each other and they just said,
00:21:23 --> 00:21:25 well, we wasn't talking to you we
00:21:25 --> 00:21:29 were talking to each other yeah but i heard you and
00:21:29 --> 00:21:31 if you don't want to have a if you don't want anybody to hear
00:21:31 --> 00:21:36 you then you shouldn't talk and that's you know basically now of course they
00:21:36 --> 00:21:40 were professional women but you know if they did if she walked up to the wrong
00:21:40 --> 00:21:47 person sure that was going to be a problem okay so but this is this is where
00:21:47 --> 00:21:50 we are this is where we are So hopefully,
00:21:50 --> 00:21:56 you know, thank God for pepper spray and that she was not afraid to protect herself.
00:21:56 --> 00:22:04 And of course, you know, mailmen for years has always been taught how to protect
00:22:04 --> 00:22:08 themselves, you know, from different people and animals and so forth.
00:22:08 --> 00:22:10 So thank God she had that.
00:22:10 --> 00:22:13 Thank God she had that. She was able to use it.
00:22:13 --> 00:22:16 It but just think this story could have
00:22:16 --> 00:22:19 been so much different if she did no i
00:22:19 --> 00:22:23 mean definitely so i mean i think now they probably definitely need to incorporate
00:22:23 --> 00:22:29 some type of trainings in there you know a little bit more than dogs and severe
00:22:29 --> 00:22:34 weather because these these people are getting crazy out here yeah they are
00:22:34 --> 00:22:38 definitely getting crazy they are they are and you know.
00:22:39 --> 00:22:46 You know, and it's hard that folks, you know, I've got to pre-warn you,
00:22:46 --> 00:22:52 because our stories tonight will be evident exactly what Leonard just said.
00:22:52 --> 00:22:59 It is crazy out here these days. So as we kind of move towards our next story.
00:23:00 --> 00:23:04 So here's another story that should be pretty interesting.
00:23:05 --> 00:23:10 Yep. So, Dave, I don't know. Do you remember the black pastor who got arrested
00:23:10 --> 00:23:12 while watering his neighbor's flowers?
00:23:13 --> 00:23:18 You remember that? This was probably from two years ago.
00:23:18 --> 00:23:20 Yeah, I was going to say that was a couple of years ago. Yes,
00:23:20 --> 00:23:21 I do remember that. Yeah.
00:23:22 --> 00:23:26 All right. So for anyone who's not familiar, I am going to play the video,
00:23:26 --> 00:23:30 the video, or maybe not the whole video, but at least the beginning of it.
00:23:30 --> 00:23:35 And just to set it up, the police approach a man, a black man,
00:23:35 --> 00:23:38 who is watering some flowers.
00:23:38 --> 00:23:46 So you can listen here. It's a warm late spring evening in the small Alabama town of Childersburg.
00:23:46 --> 00:23:50 Police are responding to a 911 call from a neighbor reporting she sees a young
00:23:50 --> 00:23:56 black male in a car she doesn't recognize at her neighbor's home, who she knows are away.
00:23:57 --> 00:24:00 We're watching the police body cam footage. footage what officers
00:24:00 --> 00:24:03 find is a man holding a garden hose
00:24:03 --> 00:24:06 watering flowers what you
00:24:06 --> 00:24:09 doing here man what are they saying that
00:24:09 --> 00:24:21 is that your vehicle it's not the neighbors okay you live here okay they're
00:24:21 --> 00:24:24 saying that this vehicle is not supposed to be here and you're not supposed
00:24:24 --> 00:24:27 to be here. They called about it. I don't know who called.
00:24:27 --> 00:24:30 I'm supposed to be here. I'm Pastor Jennings. I live across the street.
00:24:31 --> 00:24:33 You're Pastor Jennings? Yes. I'm looking out for their house while they go.
00:24:34 --> 00:24:37 The scene quickly escalates when police demand 56-year-old Michael Jennings,
00:24:38 --> 00:24:41 a pastor of 31 years, provide some identification.
00:24:42 --> 00:24:44 Don't do this to me.
00:24:45 --> 00:24:49 There's a suspicious person in the yard, and if you're not one to identify yourself.
00:24:50 --> 00:24:54 Jennings, who at one time had trained to be a police officer and has already
00:24:54 --> 00:25:00 told police his name, his occupation, and where he lives refuse him. He don't live here.
00:25:02 --> 00:25:06 I'm not saying nothing about you have no right to approach me if I ain't did
00:25:06 --> 00:25:08 nothing suspicious or nothing wrong.
00:25:09 --> 00:25:11 Moments later, when Jennings attempts to use his cell phone,
00:25:11 --> 00:25:16 he's placed in handcuffs. Who called y'all? We don't have that.
00:25:17 --> 00:25:20 So, Dave, I'm just going to pause it right there because I think we all know
00:25:20 --> 00:25:27 what happened next but you know yeah you know it's crazy so a neighbor saw him
00:25:27 --> 00:25:34 watering the flowers of i guess his neighbor's house and they called the police
00:25:34 --> 00:25:35 saying he looks suspicious,
00:25:37 --> 00:25:44 I mean, it's crazy. It's just crazy. Obviously, he lives in the neighborhood. Right.
00:25:46 --> 00:25:51 But, you know, so anyway, so this story was from about two years ago.
00:25:52 --> 00:25:56 And since this story, it looks like he has taken legal action.
00:25:57 --> 00:26:01 So probably luckily for him, since I said that he had been trained to be a police
00:26:01 --> 00:26:06 officer before, he recognized that his rights had been violated because he did
00:26:06 --> 00:26:09 not have to show identification and he thoroughly identified himself.
00:26:09 --> 00:26:17 And so he has taken action and he is actually planning to sue the police department
00:26:17 --> 00:26:24 for grievances based on being unlawfully arrested and.
00:26:26 --> 00:26:28 Dehumanized at the scene of the incident.
00:26:29 --> 00:26:33 So I just wanted to bring this one up because You know, I know we talked about it before.
00:26:34 --> 00:26:38 Everybody was very upset. One thing that I do think was odd at the beginning
00:26:38 --> 00:26:47 of the video, the police said that someone made a 911 call about a young black man.
00:26:47 --> 00:26:52 Oh, you know, of course, you know, he was 50, 60 years old. Definitely not a young black man.
00:26:54 --> 00:26:58 But, you know, you know, I just think it's crazy that these are the times we
00:26:58 --> 00:27:03 live in when we think about certain things. And I believe we talked about it
00:27:03 --> 00:27:06 on a Friday show two years ago.
00:27:06 --> 00:27:10 But, you know, we talked about what black people can and can't do.
00:27:11 --> 00:27:16 And now it's added to the list that, you know, we can't water flowers at a neighbor's
00:27:16 --> 00:27:19 house without, you know, the threat of being arrested.
00:27:21 --> 00:27:28 Yeah. And I bet you if that neighbor is of a different persuasion, okay,
00:27:29 --> 00:27:35 that neighbor could go to his house and order his yard and probably not have
00:27:35 --> 00:27:36 it hit him. I'm sure. Yep.
00:27:37 --> 00:27:42 Yeah. And you're right. So by the police calling, we can only make the assumption
00:27:42 --> 00:27:45 that his neighbor is white. Yeah.
00:27:47 --> 00:27:56 So So, it's, then again, before we even got into the story, and based on the
00:27:56 --> 00:28:00 last story, then again, here we are. We're at a racial divide.
00:28:01 --> 00:28:08 And really, we're in a day and time that really is scary right now.
00:28:08 --> 00:28:16 Now, you know, we're being put in a box that, you know, we're supposed to be able to.
00:28:17 --> 00:28:23 We've been put in a box that we're supposed to be able to go into and out of anytime we feel like it.
00:28:23 --> 00:28:28 But for some reason, the doors always seem to be closed on this box and we are
00:28:28 --> 00:28:31 stuck inside of it. If that makes sense to you.
00:28:31 --> 00:28:40 Yeah, perfect. And it's really a shame because this is not the 1960s. It's not the 50s.
00:28:41 --> 00:28:45 You know, we're supposed to be able to.
00:28:47 --> 00:28:54 Every commercial you see on TV nowadays, any TV show, they're pushing in your
00:28:54 --> 00:28:57 face, and I'm putting it that way on purpose.
00:28:58 --> 00:29:04 You see interracial couples every time you turn on a TV now.
00:29:05 --> 00:29:14 It's either a white male with a black female or vice versa, a black male with a white female.
00:29:14 --> 00:29:22 Male you know so you know it's just you know and that's being put on our face more than the same,
00:29:22 --> 00:29:29 race couples or anymore you know and because they're trying to say that we're
00:29:29 --> 00:29:36 in a different day and time and that it's okay to be different but is it really
00:29:36 --> 00:29:40 okay because none so far the the two stories that we've told,
00:29:40 --> 00:29:42 it hasn't been. Yeah.
00:29:42 --> 00:29:48 And to be honest, one, somebody just doing their job and the second one,
00:29:48 --> 00:29:52 somebody just minding their business. Minding their own business.
00:29:53 --> 00:30:00 I hope he soothes the past off of them. Well, obviously the cops haven't lost,
00:30:01 --> 00:30:02 they didn't do anything wrong.
00:30:02 --> 00:30:06 They, you know, of course, you know, they were just doing it just supposedly,
00:30:06 --> 00:30:12 you know, but, you know, But hopefully, you know, this guy gets his day in court.
00:30:12 --> 00:30:15 Really, he should, you know, definitely.
00:30:16 --> 00:30:19 All right. Moving on to another our next story. And unfortunately,
00:30:19 --> 00:30:21 folks, we're still on the same wavelength.
00:30:24 --> 00:30:25 It's just the world we're in right now.
00:30:27 --> 00:30:31 Let's see. You mentioned the word hate crime. Here we go.
00:30:32 --> 00:30:39 Black swimmer at Gettysburg College had the M word carved in his chest by a white teammate.
00:30:40 --> 00:30:42 We kind of talked about this before, right?
00:30:43 --> 00:30:45 Briefly. Yeah, we did. Briefly. Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:46 --> 00:30:52 The site that I got this from, BOSF, has covered a lot of racism and a lot of hate crimes.
00:30:52 --> 00:30:55 But we never
00:30:55 --> 00:30:58 heard anything like this before according to
00:30:58 --> 00:31:02 abc a black student athlete a swimmer
00:31:02 --> 00:31:05 at gettysburg college in pennsylvania was victimized by
00:31:05 --> 00:31:14 one of his white swim teammates when he said his teammate carved n-i-g-g-e-r
00:31:14 --> 00:31:22 into the black student's flesh with a box cutter go back and read that again yeah right.
00:31:24 --> 00:31:27 Yes this actually happened in
00:31:27 --> 00:31:30 2020 as if it was
00:31:30 --> 00:31:38 back in the 1700s but wait it gets worse the white student appears to be protected
00:31:38 --> 00:31:44 by the school as they will publicly I mean they will not release his name to
00:31:44 --> 00:31:47 the public even though this person should be,
00:31:48 --> 00:31:55 of adult age 18 years or older now we couldn't be wrong we could be wrong but
00:31:55 --> 00:32:02 unless the student is 16 years old a 16 year old genius in college is not a
00:32:02 --> 00:32:05 minor and should be outed as a violent racist,
00:32:06 --> 00:32:13 that he is but we digress as distasteful as that may be the most infuriating
00:32:13 --> 00:32:19 part of the story is that both the perpetrator and the victim were removed from
00:32:19 --> 00:32:26 the swim team the student who did the scratching is no longer enrolled at the college.
00:32:27 --> 00:32:33 Yates told ABC in a statement, the college is working with the other student
00:32:33 --> 00:32:38 and his family about how to most constructively move forward.
00:32:38 --> 00:32:42 Working with what? That's what it says.
00:32:43 --> 00:32:48 Why does a black man who was the subject of a hate crime need to be worked with?
00:32:49 --> 00:32:58 Right. Not only is the school making no attempts at transparency,
00:32:58 --> 00:33:03 they aren't pushing for the local police to press charges against a white student.
00:33:04 --> 00:33:10 Gettysburg Police Department Chief Robert Glennie told ABC News that they have
00:33:10 --> 00:33:13 not received a complaint about the attack.
00:33:13 --> 00:33:19 The school newspaper, the Gettysburgian, published a statement that was released
00:33:19 --> 00:33:24 by a black student's family, by the black student's family. It says this.
00:33:25 --> 00:33:30 Two weeks ago on the evening of September 6th, our son became the victim of a hate crime.
00:33:30 --> 00:33:35 The incident took place at a gathering of swim team members.
00:33:35 --> 00:33:41 It is important to note that he was the only person of color at this gathering.
00:33:41 --> 00:33:46 The reprehensible act was committed by a fellow student athlete,
00:33:46 --> 00:33:52 someone he considered his friend, someone whom he had trusted.
00:33:52 --> 00:33:59 The student used a box cutter to etch the N-word across his chest.
00:34:00 --> 00:34:04 In less than 48 hours after the incident, our son was interviewed by members
00:34:04 --> 00:34:13 of the coaching staff and some are rarely dismissed, not suspended from the swim team.
00:34:13 --> 00:34:19 The punitive action was taken prior to the commencement of the Office of Student
00:34:19 --> 00:34:21 Rights and Responsibilities on the investigation.
00:34:21 --> 00:34:27 This does not appear to have followed the policies and procedures stated in
00:34:27 --> 00:34:33 the Gettysburg student college student athletes manual. The family wrote.
00:34:33 --> 00:34:36 What kind of myth is that, Leonard?
00:34:36 --> 00:34:40 Now, I mean, it's it's definitely crazy.
00:34:40 --> 00:34:43 And Dave, you know, when I first read this article or heard about it,
00:34:43 --> 00:34:50 I'm not sure how you can read a news article and have more questions than you have answers.
00:34:51 --> 00:34:54 There's a lot of questions. Yeah, no, a ton of questions. So,
00:34:54 --> 00:35:00 I mean, one, you know, it's not like the article said that he carved the letter
00:35:00 --> 00:35:04 N on his chest. He spelled out the whole word.
00:35:04 --> 00:35:10 So, I'm really confused how you can spell out the whole word with a box cutter
00:35:10 --> 00:35:13 on someone's chest while they just sit there.
00:35:13 --> 00:35:17 Well, because you know he didn't act alone.
00:35:18 --> 00:35:20 Okay. He was held by somebody.
00:35:21 --> 00:35:25 Or other people, because that's the only way it could have been done unless
00:35:25 --> 00:35:27 he was tied up. Right, right.
00:35:27 --> 00:35:31 And then the second part, and you kind of alluded to it, you know,
00:35:31 --> 00:35:33 we don't know the name of the victim.
00:35:34 --> 00:35:37 We have not seen the victim. We have not seen his family speak out.
00:35:38 --> 00:35:44 We have not, you know, seen or heard the name of the, you know, the accused student.
00:35:45 --> 00:35:51 And I can't lie in my mind. I almost want to say, did this really happen?
00:35:51 --> 00:35:56 Because, you know, it's just so absurd. And every time, every single story I
00:35:56 --> 00:35:58 hear about it doesn't make sense.
00:35:59 --> 00:36:01 You know, I was just reading something about it today because,
00:36:01 --> 00:36:04 you know, I just want to get an update. And it said that.
00:36:06 --> 00:36:13 The school urged the student and his family to contact the police because the
00:36:13 --> 00:36:16 article said that the school cannot contact the police unless they have the
00:36:16 --> 00:36:19 student's permission, which doesn't make any sense.
00:36:20 --> 00:36:25 But it says that the student and his family did not reach out to contact the
00:36:25 --> 00:36:31 police, that they were going to trust the school to handle it appropriately.
00:36:32 --> 00:36:36 And, Dave, I don't know. Like, it just, it doesn't mean anything.
00:36:38 --> 00:36:44 I mean, you know, I don't want to be insensitive because, you know,
00:36:44 --> 00:36:48 I know what it's like being on a swim team with all white people.
00:36:51 --> 00:36:56 But, I mean, Dave, tell me this. What? I mean, nothing is clear.
00:36:57 --> 00:37:02 Like, nothing is clear. Like, we don't know the name, the face, who did it, why, where.
00:37:04 --> 00:37:08 I don't know. I mean, very, very weird. This is a weird story.
00:37:09 --> 00:37:11 You know, it almost reminds me of the Trump assassination.
00:37:12 --> 00:37:16 But could it be some intimidation? I don't think so. I mean,
00:37:17 --> 00:37:18 I personally I don't think so.
00:37:19 --> 00:37:20 Well, let me say.
00:37:23 --> 00:37:24 If. In what world?
00:37:26 --> 00:37:31 And I won't say allow. In what world would somebody tie you down,
00:37:31 --> 00:37:40 use a box cutter to write the the end, you know, the N-word on your chest and you not retaliate?
00:37:40 --> 00:37:44 You tell police, you sue maybe this because, you know, I mean,
00:37:44 --> 00:37:47 I mean, so the schools, you know, sue everybody.
00:37:47 --> 00:37:53 I mean, what what world would you allow that to happen and not not do anything?
00:37:53 --> 00:37:55 Any time well i'm gonna i'm
00:37:55 --> 00:37:59 gonna look at it this way leonard if it did happen
00:37:59 --> 00:38:02 and he did not react in
00:38:02 --> 00:38:08 the way that most of us feel that we that he should have reacted which was just
00:38:08 --> 00:38:15 definitely tried to fight them all or definitely go press charges against them
00:38:15 --> 00:38:20 out out this person and let Let the people, everybody know who they are.
00:38:21 --> 00:38:25 I mean, I would think that in most cases, that's what would normally happen.
00:38:26 --> 00:38:32 But I think what's happened, maybe to explain why this hasn't happened yet,
00:38:33 --> 00:38:39 is maybe there was some other stuff that happened that has led him into keeping his mouth shut.
00:38:40 --> 00:38:48 And there could be some repercussions if he doesn't. That's another angle, as far as I'm concerned.
00:38:49 --> 00:38:54 Now, of course, we've heard stories. You and I have done stories on people that
00:38:54 --> 00:38:57 have made up stories and,
00:38:58 --> 00:39:04 you know, caused a whole bunch of, you know, you know, there was a lot going
00:39:04 --> 00:39:08 on around them stories and turned out that they wasn't telling the truth.
00:39:08 --> 00:39:13 You know and of course we got the Jussie Smollett's of the world you know that
00:39:13 --> 00:39:19 definitely caused a big stir a few years back so it could be something that.
00:39:21 --> 00:39:28 Wasn't that supposedly what happened to him? You know, it definitely wasn't until video proved it.
00:39:28 --> 00:39:30 Yeah. But, you know, so.
00:39:31 --> 00:39:39 So definitely, you know, it is something with everything that's going on in the world today.
00:39:39 --> 00:39:44 It could be you could be right. Maybe it didn't happen. But then if it did happen,
00:39:44 --> 00:39:51 then there's got to be some other stuff going on that would stop them from outing this person.
00:39:52 --> 00:40:00 Maybe they're in one of them small town, you know, that, you know, everybody got guns.
00:40:01 --> 00:40:06 You know what I'm saying? You know, and, you know, they're being told to keep
00:40:06 --> 00:40:10 their mouth shut, you know, so I don't know.
00:40:10 --> 00:40:15 So I would hate to think that this kid would go this far, especially at a white
00:40:15 --> 00:40:17 school on a white swim team.
00:40:17 --> 00:40:19 Right. Just for attention.
00:40:20 --> 00:40:24 Because this is not the type of attention you want. No, definitely not.
00:40:24 --> 00:40:28 Okay. So definitely not the type of attention you want. And especially with
00:40:28 --> 00:40:32 the climate of the world being the way that it is at this time.
00:40:32 --> 00:40:39 So you definitely, definitely want to be careful if that's what you're trying to do.
00:40:40 --> 00:40:44 Okay, so hopefully we'll be able to find out some more about this story.
00:40:47 --> 00:40:55 Things come around. It's funny, you know, finding out how true this is or how false it may be,
00:40:56 --> 00:41:03 because, you know, I mean, truly, it did kind of, you know, we kind of brought the other side.
00:41:03 --> 00:41:05 You know, what if it didn't happen?
00:41:06 --> 00:41:08 You know, so, okay.
00:41:10 --> 00:41:14 Well, think about all the stories that we've talked about, you know,
00:41:14 --> 00:41:20 and all the different outcomes and all the different things that happened during these stories.
00:41:20 --> 00:41:24 It just says a lot about where we are right now.
00:41:25 --> 00:41:32 This says a lot about where we are right now and why we need to definitely.
00:41:34 --> 00:41:40 Definitely try to make sure that we are paying attention to everything that's
00:41:40 --> 00:41:41 going on in the world today.
00:41:42 --> 00:41:45 So, all right, moving on.
00:41:46 --> 00:41:52 This, I came up to, I wanted to talk about every now and then I wanted,
00:41:52 --> 00:41:56 I want to add this to our, our thing. Oh, what we're watching.
00:41:57 --> 00:42:00 You know, I know I watch a lot more TV and stuff than you do,
00:42:00 --> 00:42:06 but, but I did, I know, I know I do, But then I also like to make recommendations.
00:42:06 --> 00:42:10 I mean, a lot of people, especially at my job, they come to me and they ask
00:42:10 --> 00:42:11 me for recommendations.
00:42:11 --> 00:42:17 You know, I kind of make recommendations and they say, oh, that was really good,
00:42:17 --> 00:42:18 Dave. That was really good.
00:42:18 --> 00:42:24 So there's two things I wanted to talk about that I watched recently that I
00:42:24 --> 00:42:29 really thought were really good and that I really feel that people should probably check out.
00:42:29 --> 00:42:35 One is a TV show that's in the second season. I think they're going to bring
00:42:35 --> 00:42:37 out a third season pretty soon, too.
00:42:38 --> 00:42:43 It's a show that's on the CW. I didn't know anything about it because,
00:42:43 --> 00:42:47 matter of fact, I have to go back and watch the first season because I didn't
00:42:47 --> 00:42:49 see the first season. Didn't know anything about the show.
00:42:49 --> 00:42:52 Just kind of stumbled across it a couple months ago.
00:42:53 --> 00:43:01 And it stars Courtney Vance and Anjanue Ellis for those who know Anjanue,
00:43:02 --> 00:43:08 Ellis he's done a lot of different things and very one of the first things I
00:43:08 --> 00:43:12 remember seeing her stand out in was Ray with Demi Fox.
00:43:14 --> 00:43:19 But it's a courtroom it's about a lawyer Courtney Vance plays a lawyer of course
00:43:19 --> 00:43:27 for those who don't know who Courtney me vances he is he is the husband of oh
00:43:27 --> 00:43:29 my god why am i drawing a blank all of a sudden,
00:43:29 --> 00:43:34 angela bassett of angela bassett okay and
00:43:34 --> 00:43:37 very great at very good actor i like pretty any
00:43:37 --> 00:43:40 much pretty much anything i see him in i i enjoy him
00:43:40 --> 00:43:44 in where he plays a a lawyer
00:43:44 --> 00:43:47 that's a public defender and he's trying
00:43:47 --> 00:43:50 this case that actually started it's a
00:43:50 --> 00:43:54 good it's one of these continuation cases that
00:43:54 --> 00:43:57 started during the first season about a track
00:43:57 --> 00:44:00 star that got murdered the show is it's an
00:44:00 --> 00:44:08 excellent show it's acted very well or the events is very good excuse me apparently
00:44:08 --> 00:44:18 the the The athlete that got murdered was a black athlete who was a big-time
00:44:18 --> 00:44:20 track star, and he was murdered by a cop.
00:44:20 --> 00:44:27 And Courtney Vance is actually defending the cop that murdered this guy.
00:44:28 --> 00:44:32 Against, of course, a lot of people's will, you know, because a lot of people
00:44:32 --> 00:44:34 are upset with him defending this cop.
00:44:35 --> 00:44:37 Man, it is a really, really good show.
00:44:38 --> 00:44:45 And telling anybody who likes, you know, courtroom dramas and lawyer-type shows
00:44:45 --> 00:44:47 or whatever, check this show out.
00:44:48 --> 00:44:51 You know, like I said, I got to go back and watch the first season.
00:44:51 --> 00:44:56 I watched the whole second season because, and I was trying to find the first season.
00:44:57 --> 00:45:01 It's on the CW. they said it's on the CW app I gotta find I gotta find the,
00:45:02 --> 00:45:07 find my way to the first season because like where I did come across that they
00:45:07 --> 00:45:11 wanted to charge for it but it wasn't on the CW app I said I ain't paying for
00:45:11 --> 00:45:16 that yeah so but they said you can watch it for free on the CW app so I'm
00:45:16 --> 00:45:20 gonna find I'm gonna check I have to check Hulu and see if it's on there too,
00:45:21 --> 00:45:27 okay so but recommending anybody who's listening check out 61st Street that's
00:45:27 --> 00:45:29 what it's called off to the first street. Okay.
00:45:29 --> 00:45:33 Yeah, I mean, that definitely sounds good. I may have to check it out myself.
00:45:33 --> 00:45:36 Yeah, yeah. I'm telling you, if you like that kind of stuff,
00:45:36 --> 00:45:40 and if you're a Courtney Vance guy, he is very, very good.
00:45:40 --> 00:45:48 And on top of everything, you know, that's going on with this particular case, he is a sick man.
00:45:48 --> 00:45:55 He is battling prostate cancer, and that really is a big backdrop a backdrop
00:45:55 --> 00:46:01 to a lot of the stuff that's going on during this trial so this kid this if
00:46:01 --> 00:46:05 you get a chance you know i just gave you enough to kind of wet your whistle
00:46:05 --> 00:46:07 a little bit but you definitely,
00:46:07 --> 00:46:11 definitely want to check it out the acting is first it's first rate.
00:46:13 --> 00:46:16 Another woman i can't think of her name right now she is i
00:46:16 --> 00:46:20 like her because she was in there's a
00:46:20 --> 00:46:23 tv show on hbo or the hbo
00:46:23 --> 00:46:27 showtime i'm called your honor and she's
00:46:27 --> 00:46:30 in your honor and she was very good in that i can't
00:46:30 --> 00:46:33 think of her name right now but people check
00:46:33 --> 00:46:36 this show out if you get a chance this is one of those shows
00:46:36 --> 00:46:39 that if we don't get enough people to watch it probably will
00:46:39 --> 00:46:43 it won't be back yeah yeah so i
00:46:43 --> 00:46:48 and i think it's worth you know keeping you know they definitely should have
00:46:48 --> 00:46:53 another season so yeah and especially the way you know they definitely left
00:46:53 --> 00:46:57 it open for another season especially the way this season the second season
00:46:57 --> 00:47:01 ended it was really good so So, all right.
00:47:01 --> 00:47:09 The second thing is something called the evolution of the black quarterback.
00:47:10 --> 00:47:14 Now, you don't have to be a football fan to want to watch this,
00:47:14 --> 00:47:18 but I think it's something that everybody should watch.
00:47:18 --> 00:47:21 And if you got children that are playing sports or whatever the case may be,
00:47:21 --> 00:47:25 if you can get them to watch it, you know, because I know their attention spans
00:47:25 --> 00:47:29 are short, you know, but, but especially if somebody.
00:47:29 --> 00:47:33 If it's playing football or something like that. It is something that has a
00:47:33 --> 00:47:37 lot of history, a lot of great conversations.
00:47:38 --> 00:47:42 It's what it is. It's Michael Vick, former football player.
00:47:42 --> 00:47:46 Of course, unfortunately best known for, you know, his dog rack,
00:47:47 --> 00:47:48 a dog fighting thing that got
00:47:48 --> 00:47:53 him in trouble, but who was a hell of a quarterback, great quarterback.
00:47:53 --> 00:47:58 He is the host of this thing. And he goes around and he talks,
00:47:58 --> 00:48:00 he, he does, he, Thank you.
00:48:01 --> 00:48:03 Talks about the history of the black quarterback in the pro
00:48:03 --> 00:48:07 football you know pro football and college football as well and.
00:48:07 --> 00:48:10 He kind of goes and talks to
00:48:10 --> 00:48:13 a lot of these quarterbacks that are still living one of
00:48:13 --> 00:48:16 my favorite quarterbacks that you never hear anybody talk about
00:48:16 --> 00:48:19 anymore he talks to him his name is James Harris
00:48:19 --> 00:48:22 he talks to him and he talks to
00:48:22 --> 00:48:25 a couple other quarterbacks from Jalen Hurts for the
00:48:25 --> 00:48:28 Eagles now you know you know there's
00:48:28 --> 00:48:30 only one black quarterback in the the hall of fame
00:48:30 --> 00:48:35 is it oh wow who's that one that's exactly
00:48:35 --> 00:48:37 who you were right exactly who it is not uh
00:48:37 --> 00:48:40 the the quarterback from the redskins only one
00:48:40 --> 00:48:43 doug williams yeah doug williams yeah
00:48:43 --> 00:48:46 he and he talked to both of them in the special by the way he talked
00:48:46 --> 00:48:49 to both of them warren moon is the only black
00:48:49 --> 00:48:53 quarterback in the hall of fame wow ridiculous ridiculous
00:48:53 --> 00:48:56 and and his
00:48:56 --> 00:48:59 story of what had what happened to
00:48:59 --> 00:49:01 him for him to even get to
00:49:01 --> 00:49:04 the hall of fame it's a story that everyone
00:49:04 --> 00:49:08 needs to hear you know so telling
00:49:08 --> 00:49:11 everyone if you get a 10 it's a
00:49:11 --> 00:49:14 it's a series i think it's like four parts
00:49:14 --> 00:49:18 or something like that but it's on prime prime video
00:49:18 --> 00:49:21 it's called the evolution of the
00:49:21 --> 00:49:25 black quarterback history in the making very
00:49:25 --> 00:49:31 informative information there's a guy leonard i can't think of his name right.
00:49:31 --> 00:49:37 Now because he never made it to the pros there's a guy who won every game as
00:49:37 --> 00:49:45 a starter in high school for four years in high school as a starter Went to college,
00:49:45 --> 00:49:50 became the starting quarterback his sophomore year at the college that he went
00:49:50 --> 00:49:52 to, which was the University of Toledo.
00:49:53 --> 00:49:59 From the very first game until his last game, never lost a game in college and
00:49:59 --> 00:50:06 never got a sniff by the draft for pro football because he was black.
00:50:07 --> 00:50:10 Wow. What state was he coming from?
00:50:11 --> 00:50:16 What was the state? I can't remember now. I have to go back a lot.
00:50:17 --> 00:50:20 I think it was the state he came from. I think he was from Ohio.
00:50:20 --> 00:50:23 If I'm not mistaken. I think he was from Ohio.
00:50:23 --> 00:50:30 But for seven years, he never lost a game. Seven whole years. He didn't lose a game.
00:50:31 --> 00:50:36 And they would not give him a shot at playing pro football as a quarterback.
00:50:37 --> 00:50:40 You heard the name Tony Dungy. He used to coach the Colts and,
00:50:41 --> 00:50:42 you know, he's an analyst and whatever.
00:50:43 --> 00:50:48 Tony Dungy was an all-conference quarterback in college.
00:50:48 --> 00:50:53 He was all-conference, had a couple of records and everything.
00:50:53 --> 00:50:57 He came out of school with a bunch of credentials. They told him,
00:50:57 --> 00:51:00 oh, you can't play quarterback in the NFL. You got to play defense.
00:51:02 --> 00:51:04 And that's what he ended up playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:51:04 --> 00:51:07 They ended up winning a couple championships with the Steelers,
00:51:07 --> 00:51:10 but they wouldn't even give him a look at quarterback.
00:51:11 --> 00:51:15 So and, you know, you know, and you can tell some of these guys a little bitter.
00:51:15 --> 00:51:18 You can tell when they talk to him. But, you know, but.
00:51:20 --> 00:51:24 It's just interesting, is it? But I'm telling you guys, evolution of the black
00:51:24 --> 00:51:26 quarterback with Michael Bick. Check it out.
00:51:27 --> 00:51:30 OK, I think you I think you would really enjoy that as well.
00:51:31 --> 00:51:35 Yeah, you know, I'm going to make it. I'm definitely going to take a look at it.
00:51:35 --> 00:51:40 So I do, you know, and I saw information about I didn't realize it was on Prime.
00:51:41 --> 00:51:45 There were some people who I know who went to the screening.
00:51:45 --> 00:51:47 It was either in D.C. or New York.
00:51:47 --> 00:51:51 And they had, like, rave reviews about it. So I definitely had a bunch of fans.
00:51:53 --> 00:51:58 It's awesome, man. I was sitting there like a kid in a candy store just watching that stuff.
00:51:58 --> 00:52:01 And he just doesn't talk to black quarterbacks.
00:52:01 --> 00:52:06 Like, he talks to white quarterbacks too, like Steve Young or whatever and a couple other guys.
00:52:06 --> 00:52:13 But he talks to them and references to their dealings with the black quarterback,
00:52:13 --> 00:52:18 and they all try to explain, you know, it's not how it wasn't fair.
00:52:18 --> 00:52:21 They didn't think that black quarterbacks could read defenses and all that kind
00:52:21 --> 00:52:25 of stuff and be able to perform the same way.
00:52:25 --> 00:52:28 They didn't think they were smart enough, that type of stuff, you know.
00:52:29 --> 00:52:35 But it's only, like I said, that again, you know, it's only one in the Hall of Fame.
00:52:35 --> 00:52:39 So that makes you know that's crazy so but
00:52:39 --> 00:52:42 those are my recommendations folks let me
00:52:42 --> 00:52:45 know if you get a chance to check them out let me know what you
00:52:45 --> 00:52:47 think or you know let us know about that
00:52:47 --> 00:52:53 because i think you know i think you guys will enjoy both of those so all right
00:52:53 --> 00:53:00 time for lennon's favorite part of the show dave corner okay figured out i figured
00:53:00 --> 00:53:04 i'll have something in line with the show since we've been talking about all
00:53:04 --> 00:53:06 the stuff that we've been talking about tonight.
00:53:07 --> 00:53:09 So this is my question to you, Leonard.
00:53:10 --> 00:53:17 Based on everything that's going on in the world today versus on what was going
00:53:17 --> 00:53:20 on 20 years ago, this is my question to you.
00:53:21 --> 00:53:28 Are we better off now in the year 2024 than we were in the year 2000?
00:53:29 --> 00:53:32 As far as our climate, as far as the climate is concerned,
00:53:33 --> 00:53:38 as far as racial, you know, racial over, you know, you know, have we overcome,
00:53:39 --> 00:53:47 you know, what about the, even in the world of, even in the world of electronics
00:53:47 --> 00:53:50 and, you know, the internet and all that stuff.
00:53:50 --> 00:53:55 Are we better off now than we were back in 2000 when we were when the world
00:53:55 --> 00:53:58 when 2000 came in and everything was crazy?
00:53:58 --> 00:54:00 We thought everything was about to change.
00:54:01 --> 00:54:05 Are we better off now than we were back then?
00:54:06 --> 00:54:11 So, I mean, I think that's a hard question to answer, because I know in the
00:54:11 --> 00:54:16 year 2000, I was in college, Lord A&M University, and I was having a great time.
00:54:16 --> 00:54:19 Having a ball. Oh, yeah. Having a ball.
00:54:19 --> 00:54:21 But, you know, in general.
00:54:22 --> 00:54:27 So I'll say a couple of things. I think social media and, you know,
00:54:27 --> 00:54:32 our overindulgence in electronics has ruined a lot of our lives.
00:54:32 --> 00:54:34 I mean, you know, there's benefits to it, too.
00:54:34 --> 00:54:38 But I think we were better off in the 2000s.
00:54:38 --> 00:54:44 Now, you know, even as we talk about the Michigan man attacking the postal worker
00:54:44 --> 00:54:48 and the black pastor who was arrested for watering their flowers,
00:54:48 --> 00:54:53 I'm sure all these things happened back then. We just didn't hear about them.
00:54:54 --> 00:54:57 Now, I think social media is good in the fact that, you know,
00:54:57 --> 00:55:01 kind of help spread the word and, you know, we can rally behind certain people.
00:55:02 --> 00:55:07 But and to be honest, as far as a racial climate, you know, I think it's probably
00:55:07 --> 00:55:11 the same, but I think we just hear about it more because of social media.
00:55:14 --> 00:55:16 And I mean, you know, of course, I was in college, you know,
00:55:16 --> 00:55:19 Florida A&M University. So things were a little bit different.
00:55:20 --> 00:55:24 But as far as, you know, a lot of the topics we talked about.
00:55:24 --> 00:55:30 So now I will I will say I'm surprised at the swimming store,
00:55:30 --> 00:55:35 the swimming article we covered, because, you know, kind of like I speak about oftentimes.
00:55:35 --> 00:55:44 My son is also a swimmer. He is 14, 15 years old. And his swim team is greater
00:55:44 --> 00:55:50 than 50 percent minority, whether it be black, Asian, Indian.
00:55:52 --> 00:55:57 So for this black swimmer to be in a situation where they allow that type of
00:55:57 --> 00:56:00 stuff to happen, you know, just kind of unbelievable to me.
00:56:00 --> 00:56:06 But to answer your question, Dave, I feel like we were better off in the 2000s. What about you?
00:56:07 --> 00:56:15 I agree. I'll be honest, I really do. I really feel that was a better time for us.
00:56:15 --> 00:56:20 I understand progress is what it is.
00:56:20 --> 00:56:30 We got electric cars, we got hybrid cars, we got all this technology, all these electronics.
00:56:30 --> 00:56:38 We got news that we can find out about in real time now because it's all over
00:56:38 --> 00:56:40 the place with social media.
00:56:41 --> 00:56:46 You drop something on the ground and you walk away, if you get to pick it up,
00:56:47 --> 00:56:51 somebody has a videotape of you doing it. Right.
00:56:55 --> 00:56:57 So we're definitely more aware.
00:56:59 --> 00:57:04 What's going on in the world and all the different things that we have at our fingertips.
00:57:04 --> 00:57:11 Now I do kind of disagree with you on one thing about the 2000 period,
00:57:12 --> 00:57:20 which is, I don't feel that even with us not knowing because we didn't have
00:57:20 --> 00:57:23 social media the way we have it now, Now,
00:57:24 --> 00:57:30 I just don't feel that the racial tension was as heavy as it is now.
00:57:30 --> 00:57:38 And I think a lot of that came into play back in 2016 when we elected a certain person into office.
00:57:39 --> 00:57:48 Okay. And that's when it really became heavier because of what happened during
00:57:48 --> 00:57:52 the four years that that person was in office and what's happened since that.
00:57:52 --> 00:57:55 I we we of course we've
00:57:55 --> 00:57:59 always had racism it's never going to go anywhere but
00:57:59 --> 00:58:02 i just felt that you know
00:58:02 --> 00:58:10 we didn't know as much in 2000 as we do now because it's things of being put
00:58:10 --> 00:58:16 in our face every moment of the day i you know agree with that yeah so so and
00:58:16 --> 00:58:20 i missed that i do miss that time where we didn't have everything,
00:58:21 --> 00:58:26 put in our face every moment of the day. You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
00:58:26 --> 00:58:31 I'll just say real quick. If you go on social media now, Dave,
00:58:31 --> 00:58:33 don't let the algorithm hit you.
00:58:33 --> 00:58:38 Because if you find one racist incident, it's about to be in your timeline all day.
00:58:39 --> 00:58:44 It's going to be there. And look, you got to show somebody your phone.
00:58:45 --> 00:58:48 Take a look at this. Ha ha. And then they're going to look at you and say,
00:58:48 --> 00:58:51 hey, so what's that all about right there? Right.
00:58:51 --> 00:58:57 Because, you know, it's there, you know? So, you know, so yeah,
00:58:57 --> 00:58:59 I agree. I agree with that wholeheartedly.
00:58:59 --> 00:59:05 And it's sad. It's really sad.
00:59:05 --> 00:59:08 We should be saying this should be the best time of our life right now.
00:59:09 --> 00:59:10 But neither one of us are saying that.
00:59:11 --> 00:59:15 And that's not good. That's not good. Speak for yourself, Dave.
00:59:16 --> 00:59:17 Well, yeah, well, I mean...
00:59:18 --> 00:59:22 You know, I'm not the ball. I'm not balling like Leonard is,
00:59:22 --> 00:59:23 but I'm just saying, you know.
00:59:23 --> 00:59:27 Dave, Dave, yes, you are. Dave, all that overtime you working?
00:59:27 --> 00:59:29 All that overtime you working? Come on now.
00:59:30 --> 00:59:35 Look, look, look. All that overtime. I got to work the overtime to have gas
00:59:35 --> 00:59:38 to come down to your place. You know.
00:59:39 --> 00:59:42 Dave, Dave, Dave, come on down. Come on down. Yeah, I know.
00:59:42 --> 00:59:46 I need, I need, I need. Look, did you see how, did you see how they jumped gas
00:59:46 --> 00:59:49 up on us all of a sudden? No, I didn't. What is it at?
00:59:50 --> 00:59:55 I noticed yesterday it was 315. Last week it was 280. I got gas at the same
00:59:55 --> 00:59:58 place for like 289. Where did you get it for 289?
01:00:00 --> 01:00:05 In Newark. In Newark. There's a couple of places that were at 289 last week.
01:00:06 --> 01:00:09 Yeah. And most and almost everybody was in the 290s.
01:00:10 --> 01:00:12 Right. Now it's like 315.
01:00:14 --> 01:00:18 They're getting ready for the election. Yeah. Well, you know,
01:00:18 --> 01:00:22 it always goes up. from when October comes around because when the fall comes
01:00:22 --> 01:00:26 in, that's when they change the gas price. Right. Yeah.
01:00:27 --> 01:00:32 But you guys, give us your thoughts on that. You know, we really would like
01:00:32 --> 01:00:35 to have your thoughts on the whole show because as you can see,
01:00:36 --> 01:00:40 the theme of the whole show kind of fell in line with all, you know,
01:00:40 --> 01:00:42 kind of fell in line even to the question.
01:00:43 --> 01:00:50 So give us your thoughts on what you heard tonight And especially the Dave's Corner question,
01:00:50 --> 01:01:01 because really, do you feel better about being in 2024 versus thinking back to 2000,
01:01:01 --> 01:01:05 the year 2000, for those of you that were born anyway?
01:01:05 --> 01:01:09 You know, were you better off back then?
01:01:10 --> 01:01:15 So that's where we are. Well, that's our show for tonight.
01:01:15 --> 01:01:18 Night and we really want to thank you
01:01:18 --> 01:01:23 guys for taking the time to listen to us and you heard me say in the beginning
01:01:23 --> 01:01:29 of the show now hosted by the mbg podcast network yes sir this this you know
01:01:29 --> 01:01:33 matter of fact leonard why don't you tell them about the mbg podcast network
01:01:33 --> 01:01:37 sure so the mbg podcast network was founded.
01:01:39 --> 01:01:43 About a month ago, and it's been about two years in the making.
01:01:44 --> 01:01:49 And the real goal was to provide a platform for underrepresented voices,
01:01:50 --> 01:01:55 podcasters in the Black community to share their stories, perspectives, and expertise.
01:01:56 --> 01:02:01 If anyone's not familiar, a podcast network for those who are involved provides
01:02:01 --> 01:02:06 a lot of support to podcasters, whether it be production, marketing,
01:02:07 --> 01:02:11 advertising, monetizing, you know, pretty much everything that would almost
01:02:11 --> 01:02:13 be like a podcast virtual assistant.
01:02:13 --> 01:02:15 It provides a lot of those services.
01:02:16 --> 01:02:22 But in order for most podcasts to qualify to be involved with the podcast network,
01:02:22 --> 01:02:29 they may have to have 5000 downloads per episode or maybe even up to 50000 downloads
01:02:29 --> 01:02:32 per episode for some of the larger podcast network.
01:02:32 --> 01:02:37 So basically what we wanted to do was provide some of those same benefits to
01:02:37 --> 01:02:42 people who may be starting out or maybe even established, but may not have those
01:02:42 --> 01:02:45 numbers, but have a quality podcast.
01:02:45 --> 01:02:54 So, you know, basically our our thought pattern is that we wanted to be able to uplift those voices,
01:02:54 --> 01:03:00 those podcasters, those great shows orchestrated by hosts of color,
01:03:00 --> 01:03:05 you know, celebrating diversity and, you know, really going with the mission
01:03:05 --> 01:03:10 of the network to amplify, amplify, amplify and empower.
01:03:10 --> 01:03:13 Our, I know, Dave, you got me tongue-in-cheek, you know, Dave,
01:03:13 --> 01:03:17 one thing I'm going to remember to do is always bring a glass of water down.
01:03:17 --> 01:03:20 I do a podcast, throat has been dry all day.
01:03:21 --> 01:03:27 But long story short, you know, we're looking to support quality podcasts that
01:03:27 --> 01:03:33 want to join our network, who share our same mission, and, you know, together,
01:03:33 --> 01:03:37 strengthen numbers, you know, we can make a difference.
01:03:38 --> 01:03:42 So for anyone who may be interested in seeing if your podcast is a good fit
01:03:42 --> 01:03:47 for our podcast network, you can go to NBG.
01:03:47 --> 01:03:53 That's that like Nancy boy, girl, NBG podcast network.com.
01:03:53 --> 01:03:55 And you can check out our joint page.
01:03:57 --> 01:04:02 There it is, Dave. All right. There you go. There you go, folks. And for all you guys.
01:04:02 --> 01:04:06 I get a lot of people say, man, you know, I'm really thinking about starting
01:04:06 --> 01:04:11 a podcast or, you know, I really want to do a podcast and so forth.
01:04:11 --> 01:04:15 And, you know, I've had a lot of people say that ever since we started this
01:04:15 --> 01:04:17 podcast. I'm sure. Yeah.
01:04:18 --> 01:04:23 Well, Dave, Dave, why don't we be real with people?
01:04:23 --> 01:04:26 Is it hard work to do a podcast? it's very
01:04:26 --> 01:04:30 hard work to do a podcast a preach yeah it's
01:04:30 --> 01:04:33 very hard it's you know you have to
01:04:33 --> 01:04:38 be consistent and you know you also have to be you have to want to do it first
01:04:38 --> 01:04:43 of all that's amazing your mind has to be right in order to do it and regardless
01:04:43 --> 01:04:48 of you know regardless of who may be listening to you if you got one person
01:04:48 --> 01:04:53 listening to you okay that one person is expecting to hear quality.
01:04:53 --> 01:04:55 They're expecting to hear the things they want to hear.
01:04:56 --> 01:05:01 And they're counting on that from you. So you definitely want to deliver.
01:05:01 --> 01:05:05 And that's something we're actually getting ready to start in November.
01:05:05 --> 01:05:07 We'll be starting our fourth year doing this, folks.
01:05:07 --> 01:05:12 You know, and this comes from an ideal of me and Leonard just saying,
01:05:12 --> 01:05:14 hey, we should do a podcast.
01:05:14 --> 01:05:19 Right. And here we are, you know, get ready to start our fourth year.
01:05:19 --> 01:05:22 So this is something that That we really, it's a labor of love.
01:05:22 --> 01:05:28 It's a labor, it's labor period, but it's something we enjoy doing.
01:05:29 --> 01:05:36 And for those of you that are thinking about it or been thinking about it, I encourage you to do it.
01:05:37 --> 01:05:44 And, you know, let the MBG Podcast Network host it for you, you know, so be a part of it.
01:05:44 --> 01:05:51 So just definitely, definitely check that out. and you over here is talking
01:05:51 --> 01:05:54 about it from this point on it'll be mentioned all the time.
01:05:55 --> 01:05:59 So, you know, and of course, if you have any questions you can always feel free
01:05:59 --> 01:06:01 to reach out to us. So that's not a problem.
01:06:01 --> 01:06:05 And Dave, I do just want to say a couple things about the podcast network.
01:06:05 --> 01:06:09 So right now and I'm not sure if you got a chance to check out the website lately,
01:06:09 --> 01:06:12 but we do have some great podcasts on there.
01:06:12 --> 01:06:16 So not only do we have our show News and Trends with Dave and Lynn,
01:06:17 --> 01:06:23 we recently brought on a two-time Black Pod Awards nominee.
01:06:23 --> 01:06:27 Name is Eric Fleming. He's out of Atlanta, Georgia.
01:06:27 --> 01:06:33 He has a politics news show. Great information, great guests.
01:06:33 --> 01:06:42 We also have a Black True Crime series, which chronicles unsolved mysteries
01:06:42 --> 01:06:45 in the Black community called Black and Unsolved.
01:06:45 --> 01:06:47 And Dave, guess who it's hosted by?
01:06:49 --> 01:06:53 No, it's hosted by AI Jackson.
01:06:54 --> 01:06:58 Do you recognize the name? Yeah.
01:06:59 --> 01:07:03 You know, we're in the world of AI now.
01:07:04 --> 01:07:11 Just keep that in mind. Okay. All right. But long story short. Keep in mind. Yes.
01:07:11 --> 01:07:16 It's fascinating what AI can do. Dave, unbelievable.
01:07:17 --> 01:07:19 I'm going to skip past fascinating, unbelievable.
01:07:20 --> 01:07:24 But long story short, we have a lot of good shows on there right now.
01:07:24 --> 01:07:29 And Dave, we probably have about... We have the work that's still on the feed
01:07:29 --> 01:07:32 spot. Yep, feed spot. Top 60 list.
