The conversation also covers HBCU experiences, practical do’s and don’ts for those considering Divine Nine membership, brain health and the value of talk therapy as we age, and perspectives on members publicly denouncing Greek organizations. The episode blends event promotion with community, culture, and practical advice.

00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 media specialist all around good guy how goes it man
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 i can't call it man it's uh it's another
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 day in the neighborhood you know we just doing our
00:01:54 --> 00:01:57 thing how was your easter by the way was was
00:01:57 --> 00:02:02 easter good yeah yeah it was okay we went to a we went to a restaurant in newark
00:02:02 --> 00:02:09 and i mean the the the food was average to bland at best but you know at the
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 end of the day was what it was i'm trying to get over a cold so i just really
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 been taking it easy the last couple of days. What about yours?
00:02:16 --> 00:02:21 Oh, hey, man, it was good. I was just chilling. I didn't do much of anything.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 You know, Easter just doesn't seem like Easter anymore, you know?
00:02:25 --> 00:02:30 It just seems like another day. Yeah. You know, things have really changed.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:39 I don't know if you saw my social media post about there was not one Bible movie on Sunday.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:46 He said not one what? Not one biblical movie on Sunday.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:51 You know how that was always dominating? And at least one movie was always on.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 The Ten Commandments was always on on Easter.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 None of those on regular channels now. You probably can go to the pay channels.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 Maybe. But not one beautiful movie.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 I said maybe, maybe not. Yeah, well, yeah, that's true.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 But, you know, they would always have one on, but not one was on that day.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 And I just thought that was the strangest thing.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 That just tells you the sign of the times, you know, where we are right now.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:22 And then we got our friendly neighborhood president coming on,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 telling all the lies that he tells.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:30 So, you know, it's just an interesting weekend just watching that.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 But other than that, man, I
00:03:33 --> 00:03:38 made it through. That's right. You were down south too, right? Yeah, yeah.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:42 Made a trip to Atlanta. Quick, quick trip, but.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:48 Did you get a chance to go over to the school? Yeah, we got a chance to go over to school a little bit.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:54 And, you know, my daughter is definitely, you know, Spelman bound.
00:03:54 --> 00:04:00 So she, you know, in any hesitation that she had, she kind of confirmed all
00:04:00 --> 00:04:05 her, you know, ideas that Spelman was for her.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:11 So things are looking good. And she actually, so she sent in an audition tape.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 I think it's the Spelman Jaguarettes.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 It's their dance team. So she's sending an audition tape.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 And she got, I guess, made it past the first round. So the second round,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 she has to go perform in person.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 So I think that's coming up in the next couple of weeks. So she'll probably
00:04:27 --> 00:04:32 be going back down there to see if she can make the Spelman dance team,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 which I'm happy because, you know, she spent up a lot of money going to all
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 these dance programs throughout the year.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 So it just feels good that she's kind of taking that to the next level as well.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:46 Well, that's good. That's good. I guess as you were walking around down there
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 at the pool, I knew your pockets felt tighter and tighter. Oh, yeah.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 They were very constricted.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 Okay, there you go. Yeah.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:58 I'm sure. I'm sure. But that's good. I'm glad to hear that she made her choice
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 and, you know, HBCU, and that's great. Okay.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:08 Well, well, you know, she's following in daddy, daddy's footsteps there. Right.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 I mean, not, not directly, but yeah, indirectly. I mean, well,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:16 I mean, I know not the same school, but yeah, but yeah, I mean,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 I'm, I'm, I'm glad she's going to HBCU.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:23 You know, I think there's a lot of culture that she'll be able to appreciate
00:05:23 --> 00:05:27 that, you know, we're just not privy to, you know, here in Delaware, so.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:32 Yeah. All right. Cool. Cool. Okay. All right. Well.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:40 Well, we are speaking of HBCUs and, you know, everything black today.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:50 We have some guests on with us today, and we haven't had a chance to do a show
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 like this yet in our five years.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 So this is the first time we've actually done a show like this, right?
00:05:56 --> 00:06:03 Yep, I believe so. Yeah, so let's get to it. Why don't you let everybody know who we have on tonight?
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 Yep. So our first guest is Naboo Fulman.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:13 He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, and he is a Wilmington,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 Delaware native, a singer and actor who's been performing since his teen years.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:24 A U.S. Air Force veteran, he toured across the U.S., Asia, Europe with Tops
00:06:24 --> 00:06:28 in Blue and performed internationally, including in London.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:34 After his service, he moved to Atlanta and he has shared the stage with artists
00:06:34 --> 00:06:40 like Brian Cage, Yolanda Adams, Johnny Gill and Jennifer Hudson.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:46 He is also founder and CEO of Bower Street Entertainment, where he produces
00:06:46 --> 00:06:51 the Luther Vandross tribute show. And then we also have Brother Frank Sally.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:57 Brother Frank Sally is a Philadelphia native, a 41-year member of Alpha Phi
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 Fraternity Incorporated. Golly.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:09 He was initiated in 1985 through Pi Zeta Chapter at UNC Greensboro as part of his first line.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:14 Over the years, he's served in numerous leadership roles in both the undergrad
00:07:14 --> 00:07:20 and graduate levels. He is a life member and has represented Alpha at the regional
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 and national conventions.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:27 He's been named brother of the year twice for his service and impact and counts
00:07:27 --> 00:07:32 initiating his son into the fraternity as his proudest Alpha moment.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:36 Professionally, he's a digital marketer in the pharmaceutical industry.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:42 So without further ado, we would like to welcome Brother Naboo and Brother Frank
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 to the News and Trends with Dave and Lynn. Welcome.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:50 Good evening, gentlemen. Appreciate it. How are you? Welcome, welcome, welcome.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 Well, wipe me down.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:03 All right. So I'm feeling kind of outnumbered right about now.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:07 Well, Dave, I don't know.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:12 We had this talk about 15 years ago. I'm just saying.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 Never too late. Never too late.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:22 But brothers, I'd like to welcome you both to the show. And I know we're going
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 to be speaking about some specific topics.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:30 But just for, I guess, background, and I guess we'll start with you, Naboo.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:38 How were you introduced to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated prior to becoming a member?
00:08:39 --> 00:08:43 And what would you say your experience has been like since you've been in or,
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 you know, some of the benefits?
00:08:44 --> 00:08:48 I'll tell you, one, my experience started like when I was a teenager.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 Right when i would see you know here in delaware i
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 would see you know the fraternities the sororities and
00:08:54 --> 00:08:57 whatnot and i always kind of looked
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 at the different fraternities like no that was
00:08:59 --> 00:09:03 not that's not how i roll you know what i mean that's that's not who i want
00:09:03 --> 00:09:09 to be affiliated with but i would always see alpha men and and they they were
00:09:09 --> 00:09:15 kind of just had it together they seemed like they were very you know very well-mannered
00:09:15 --> 00:09:19 you know what i mean and that's that's kind of how i was raised And then when my cousin,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:22 my older cousin, I graduated from high school a couple of years before me,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:28 we went to the same school and he went to Lincoln and he plays the new chapter at Lincoln.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:31 And it was solidified for me.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:36 But my experience has been, you know, when I first joined, I was initiated in 2016.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:43 And I remember sitting in a meeting after I got initiated and I was just kind
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 of like, you know, kind of looking at everybody. And I was like,
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 yeah, this is what I thought it would be.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 This is what I thought it would be. You know what I mean? I mean,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 this is, you know, brotherhood.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:57 Friendship, you know what I mean? Accountability, you know, you know,
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 we, we can get in, you, you know, y'all know we can get in and have the,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 you know, the, the hardest meetings, but afterwards it's, Hey,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 let's sit down and have a, you know, you know,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 a little sip of soda or something, you know what I mean? And, and move on.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:15 So that's my experience. Gotcha. Thank you for that. And, uh, brother Frank.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:22 Yeah. So, so similarly I was introduced or became aware of, of let's say the
00:10:22 --> 00:10:28 D9, as I was progressing through high school and getting closer to that college age.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 For example, one of my good friends that lived across the street from me,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 so again, I'm a Philadelphia native.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:38 One of my good friends who lived across the street from me, his older sister,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 went to the University of Pittsburgh.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:46 I think she was a Sigma Gamma Rho. And I remember being over at her house,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:52 over at their house, and she and one of her, I guess, line sisters or girlfriends were there.
00:10:52 --> 00:11:00 They were trying to predict what fraternity that I would probably try to join.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:05 And, you know, I heard them say, yeah, it'll probably be one of those Diamond in the Sky guys.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:10 And I'm thinking to myself, like, what the, what are they even talking about?
00:11:10 --> 00:11:15 But then my real exposure came from one of my,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:22 best friends growing up he and i linked up probably at the beginning of high school his dad.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:26 Was a veterinarian who was a vet from
00:11:26 --> 00:11:29 tuskegee like most black vets in
00:11:29 --> 00:11:33 this in this area and he was alpha and
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 then his two older brothers had already gone to school
00:11:35 --> 00:11:38 and gone to tuskegee as well
00:11:38 --> 00:11:41 and both of them were alphas as well
00:11:41 --> 00:11:44 and then when you look at philadelphia that
00:11:44 --> 00:11:48 was during the time where the greek picnic was
00:11:48 --> 00:11:52 i mean big you know so i
00:11:52 --> 00:11:55 mean you already told people i got 41 years and so you
00:11:55 --> 00:11:58 know i'm talking about like late 70s early
00:11:58 --> 00:12:01 80s greek picnic every summer was it
00:12:01 --> 00:12:06 was a big thing and i didn't go to my i never went because i felt like uh you
00:12:06 --> 00:12:10 know if you don't have one of those t-shirts on with the three letter three
00:12:10 --> 00:12:16 letters on it why bother and And then my buddy who swung by one day because
00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 his brothers, line brothers, were all in town.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:22 And we had a lot of people at their house. And he came by.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:26 He called me and said, Sal, what you doing today? I said, just hanging around.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 He said, I'm coming to get you to go to the picnic.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:32 I said, what? Next thing I know, he's pulling up at the door.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:35 And we went down, man, and we had like the best time.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:40 You know, I really, really enjoyed that first experience, like being a,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:45 let's say, a D9 experience, having an opportunity to just kind of look in and
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 see it from a social perspective.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:53 And then just to kind of speed it up a little bit, I went to a small school
00:12:53 --> 00:12:56 in North Carolina, Guilford College, which was actually a Quaker school,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:59 so obviously not an HBCU.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 And I made the decision that, okay, if I'm going to stay here,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 I need an exclusively Black experience.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:10 And so being at school in Greensboro, you had A&T about 20 minutes down the street.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:16 Right across the railroad tracks from A&T, you had Bennett around the corner from Bennett.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:20 You had UNCG, and at that time had about 1 black students,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:23 and 700 of those were female.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:29 And then you had Greensboro College, which was like around the corner from there.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:34 And then Guilford was kind of sat out in the suburb.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:39 So I kind of very unscientifically started kind of checking out.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:44 I found myself in various situations where I had a chance to see what happened.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:49 The Qs were like, what the Kappas were like, and the like.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:54 And during this time, my friend that I told you about pledged as a freshman,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 pledged Alpha as a freshman at the University of Florida.
00:13:58 --> 00:14:03 And then one of my classmates was at Duke in Pleasant Omega.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 So I got the full exposure.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:14 And then for me, being a student off campus, Alpha really embraced my situation.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:18 And the chapter at UNCG had just was charted.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:25 So I actually went through the chapter at A&T and they introduced me to the chapter at UNCG.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:28 And the rest, as they say, is history.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:35 So, you know, my experience has been phenomenal in terms of like all the things that Naboo mentioned.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:39 But the other piece of it, let's say for a total D9 experience,
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 has been like the networking.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:46 You know, I meet people all over the country And actually, all over the world,
00:14:46 --> 00:14:50 you know, from the past few years, my wife and I have gone to Europe,
00:14:50 --> 00:14:56 and I've met alphas, I've met twos, I've met kappas, and it's all like we're one big family.
00:14:57 --> 00:15:01 So it's been a phenomenal experience. And then, you know, I have a legacy,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:05 and my wife has two legacies in terms of she's a delta, and our two doggies
00:15:05 --> 00:15:09 are deltas, and my son is an alpha as well.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:17 Gotcha. Okay. Awesome to hear. So I know that there's an event coming up that
00:15:17 --> 00:15:21 y'all kind of want to talk about and kind of get some visibility out there.
00:15:22 --> 00:15:27 Can you kind of break down the event and what's going to be happening with it? Sure, sure.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:32 So coming up on May 2nd at the Delaware Park, you know, the racetrack slash
00:15:32 --> 00:15:38 casino, we'll be having our fifth annual Old Gold Derby.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:45 So this is an event that originated as a fundraiser for a brother by the name of Michael E. Yancey.
00:15:45 --> 00:15:50 We started, Brother Yancey was a longtime member of the local chapter,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:55 graduate chapter here, Gamma Theta Lambda, and also a longtime member of Alpha Phi Alpha.
00:15:56 --> 00:16:02 Very dear brother, very, very good to the community and to brothers at large.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:07 And unfortunately, the brother passed away. So the decision was made to start
00:16:07 --> 00:16:09 a scholarship fund in his name.
00:16:09 --> 00:16:18 And so this event was started as like one of the fundraisers for this particular scholarship.
00:16:19 --> 00:16:23 And so the scholarship helps, you know,
00:16:23 --> 00:16:29 graduating seniors from high schools in Wilmington as kind of like as an assist
00:16:29 --> 00:16:34 or a scholarship to try to, you know, make things a little easier for them financially.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:40 Going off to college. So the event has grown every year.
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 Each year we're looking for a new venue.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:49 This year is going to be probably the biggest, the baddest.
00:16:49 --> 00:16:56 Most ice cold event ever on hopefully a beautiful spring day in celebration
00:16:56 --> 00:17:00 of spring and also in celebration of the college
00:17:01 --> 00:17:07 the Kentucky Derby. And there's a rich history with African Americans that's
00:17:07 --> 00:17:11 been erased with regards to the Kentucky Derby when you think about the original
00:17:11 --> 00:17:14 jockeys and who they were.
00:17:14 --> 00:17:20 So it'll be an opportunity for grown folks to come out in their best.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:25 There'll be contests for best-dressed couples, best-dressed women,
00:17:26 --> 00:17:32 best-dressed men, as well as best hat for men and women.
00:17:33 --> 00:17:38 And then similar to last year, for the first time, we had live performances.
00:17:38 --> 00:17:41 We'll also have that this year as well.
00:17:42 --> 00:17:46 And we'll also have use of indoor as well as outdoors.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:50 So we'll have a cigar cigar vendor as well
00:17:50 --> 00:17:53 but it'll be a fantastic event
00:17:53 --> 00:17:56 sponsored by the alphas for a great
00:17:56 --> 00:17:59 cause and again that's our our scholarship okay yeah
00:17:59 --> 00:18:04 that that really sounds uh good i want to throw in a comment i know you're talking
00:18:04 --> 00:18:10 about brother mike yancey he he was actually my dean when i was initiated through
00:18:10 --> 00:18:18 grad chapter fall 2003 and um did did either of you happen to know Do you know him personally? Yes.
00:18:18 --> 00:18:26 Okay. I met him a couple of times, but I didn't get a chance to really know him well.
00:18:26 --> 00:18:32 Yeah. I mean, I would say he was a wealth of knowledge. He was alpha to the core.
00:18:32 --> 00:18:37 He was actually one of the best men at my family.
00:18:38 --> 00:18:43 Geez, the first wedding. And then he was, he was a 10 year old.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 We all had those, man. I know, I know.
00:18:45 --> 00:18:49 It's like you, you, you, you, you start remembering people from which wedding
00:18:49 --> 00:18:51 they were at. I'm like, geez, crazy.
00:18:51 --> 00:18:56 But you've been a very good brother and, you know, definitely missed to the community as well.
00:18:56 --> 00:19:00 But, you know, I will say, I am glad to see that it's at Delaware Park.
00:19:00 --> 00:19:06 I know my wife and I, we attended, I think not, it was either two years ago or three years ago.
00:19:07 --> 00:19:12 And she was upset she didn't win best dress because she came to impress.
00:19:13 --> 00:19:17 But, you know, I really think it's awesome that it's at the racetrack because
00:19:17 --> 00:19:21 I always think about the Kentucky Derby and, you know, I guess the Kentucky
00:19:21 --> 00:19:26 Derby is always a big event and maybe a social media that helps promote it.
00:19:27 --> 00:19:31 But, you know, recently you see the black people really getting dressed up.
00:19:31 --> 00:19:34 You know, they're kind of remembering the history, kind of like you talked about
00:19:34 --> 00:19:38 the first black jockeys being black or a majority of them being black.
00:19:40 --> 00:19:44 What, I'm trying to think of how to phrase this question.
00:19:45 --> 00:19:50 You know, what should people expect, Nebu, I guess, what should people expect when they come?
00:19:50 --> 00:19:55 So I know Frank kind of talked about the activations or the events,
00:19:55 --> 00:20:00 but like, what type of vibe do you think they should be looking to experience
00:20:00 --> 00:20:03 with the alphas, of course? Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:20:03 --> 00:20:07 First of all, like Frank said, it's going to be ice cold, right?
00:20:07 --> 00:20:09 But now it really is going to be grown and sexy.
00:20:10 --> 00:20:14 It's going to be grown and sexy. I mean, we're going to be in Delaware Park.
00:20:15 --> 00:20:18 We're going to be overlooking their racetrack, right?
00:20:18 --> 00:20:23 And on their racetrack is a huge, huge TV screen that they'll have actually
00:20:23 --> 00:20:25 airing the actual Kentucky Derby.
00:20:25 --> 00:20:31 So while people are dancing, while people are doing everything,
00:20:31 --> 00:20:34 you'll be able to... Sorry if you hear my grandson in the background.
00:20:36 --> 00:20:40 You know, we'll be out there having a good time, man. And it's for everybody
00:20:40 --> 00:20:43 to enjoy, man. D9, non-D9.
00:20:43 --> 00:20:47 You know, we just want people to come out and have a good time because this
00:20:47 --> 00:20:52 is a time that we can get together and just enjoy each other's company.
00:20:52 --> 00:20:54 You know what I mean? Everybody's going to be dressed to the nines.
00:20:55 --> 00:20:58 We want everybody looking good, smelling good, just having a good time.
00:20:58 --> 00:21:01 You know, and that's the vibe that we're looking for for this event.
00:21:01 --> 00:21:05 Gotcha. And just to backtrack a little bit. what is the date,
00:21:06 --> 00:21:08 time? I know you said the location, Delaware Park.
00:21:09 --> 00:21:11 How do people get tickets?
00:21:12 --> 00:21:16 So it's 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
00:21:16 --> 00:21:20 We can get tickets. It is May 2nd, Saturday, May 2nd.
00:21:20 --> 00:21:26 We can get tickets on the Delta, excuse me, I almost said my chapter in San
00:21:26 --> 00:21:32 Antonio, the Gamma Theta Lambda website. We have it all over Facebook.
00:21:33 --> 00:21:38 And please reach out to us. If you can't see anything on social media,
00:21:39 --> 00:21:40 please reach out to Gamma Theta Lambda.
00:21:41 --> 00:21:45 Is it on Event? I think we have it posted on Eventbrite as well,
00:21:45 --> 00:21:48 don't we? I don't know. Using Zephy.
00:21:49 --> 00:21:50 Using Zephy for this one.
00:21:51 --> 00:21:53 I'm not sure if that was a plug or not. My bad.
00:21:56 --> 00:22:02 All good. And then I saw on the fly, you have DJ Tim Dogg, who actually did
00:22:02 --> 00:22:05 our intro and outro here for the radio show.
00:22:05 --> 00:22:09 What type of experience are you hoping he brings as well?
00:22:10 --> 00:22:14 I'll tell you, he is well-known in the community. And I've actually had an opportunity
00:22:14 --> 00:22:20 to hear him play at a couple of parties, birthday parties for my cousin, one for my mom.
00:22:21 --> 00:22:26 And I know he shuts it down. Right. So he has a huge following here in Delaware,
00:22:26 --> 00:22:30 here in the Wilmington area. So we are really looking forward to having him
00:22:30 --> 00:22:34 join us, have him kind of set the mood, set the atmosphere.
00:22:34 --> 00:22:36 Like Frank said, we have some entertainment.
00:22:37 --> 00:22:42 One of the brothers whose son is a musician is going to come lay down some tracks
00:22:42 --> 00:22:43 for us and lay down some music.
00:22:43 --> 00:22:47 I'll be singing a couple of songs and yeah, we're going to have a good time, man.
00:22:48 --> 00:22:52 We're going to have a good time. So, so the young brother that Naboo just referred
00:22:52 --> 00:22:55 to goes by the name of Tankfully. Okay.
00:22:57 --> 00:23:03 He's a vocalist as well as he also plays, plays the guitar, does a lot of original
00:23:03 --> 00:23:07 things, but also little do some covers as well.
00:23:07 --> 00:23:13 We had him last year for the first time, and he performed for us during the dinner hour.
00:23:13 --> 00:23:19 And the people just couldn't get enough of him. I think he came back for a couple of encores.
00:23:20 --> 00:23:26 So, again, it's going to be, as Nate Bruce said, Rona's sexy.
00:23:26 --> 00:23:30 It's going to be the type of vibe that you are going to feel.
00:23:30 --> 00:23:36 It's a feel-good vibe. You're all dressed up and, you know, you get an opportunity
00:23:36 --> 00:23:42 to have a fantastic time with your date.
00:23:43 --> 00:23:47 That might be your wife or your Smiths get other or, and I won't go down.
00:23:48 --> 00:23:51 Hey, bro, I'm single. So, yeah.
00:23:52 --> 00:23:58 Hey, yeah. I'll stop there, but it'll be a good time.
00:23:58 --> 00:24:03 Okay. And then, of course, this has been put on by the brothers of Gamma Theta
00:24:03 --> 00:24:06 Lambda, chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.
00:24:06 --> 00:24:11 Can you speak about some of the other initiatives that they have in the community?
00:24:12 --> 00:24:18 Yep. So not only do, I'll hit a couple, one of our other significant fundraisers.
00:24:18 --> 00:24:24 So we also do a scholarship golf event.
00:24:24 --> 00:24:29 That's actually going to be on June 22nd at the New York Country Club.
00:24:29 --> 00:24:34 So between these two events, the Old Gold Derby and the golf tournament,
00:24:34 --> 00:24:37 those are our major fundraising events.
00:24:37 --> 00:24:42 And then we also do a Founders Day ball in December.
00:24:43 --> 00:24:46 And that also generates funds for the scholarship as well.
00:24:46 --> 00:24:50 But we also have some community events we do.
00:24:50 --> 00:24:59 We do a mentorship program over at the McCullough School. and we also have a program where.
00:25:00 --> 00:25:05 Some of the brothers went to a community center now over in Chester and taught
00:25:05 --> 00:25:08 young men how to tie ties, right?
00:25:09 --> 00:25:13 We participate in a D9 food drive every Thanksgiving.
00:25:13 --> 00:25:21 And then we also have, I think we sponsor a few families during the Christmas holidays as well.
00:25:21 --> 00:25:28 And so a variety of give back events in terms of giving back to the community.
00:25:28 --> 00:25:31 And those are just some of the highlights of those events.
00:25:31 --> 00:25:38 And the other one that we do that's a big one for the community that we won't
00:25:38 --> 00:25:40 be doing it this year, but we'll do it.
00:25:40 --> 00:25:45 It'll be back in 2027 is the Delaware Black Film Festival.
00:25:46 --> 00:25:49 We're like a major sponsor for that as well.
00:25:50 --> 00:25:53 And that was awesome this year. If you didn't get a chance to check it out,
00:25:53 --> 00:25:56 our brother Kevin Powell came down from New York.
00:25:56 --> 00:26:00 And just also just want to throw in, we just got done the March Madness Bracket
00:26:00 --> 00:26:05 Challenge as well, which was a fundraiser we did this year. Again,
00:26:05 --> 00:26:06 I think we did it a couple of years ago.
00:26:07 --> 00:26:10 So, yeah. So that's some good stuff we do.
00:26:10 --> 00:26:15 Okay. And then my last question before I turn it over to Dave is,
00:26:16 --> 00:26:21 so, you know, of course, there's always, I think both of you talked about influences
00:26:21 --> 00:26:24 that you had for Alpha kind of growing up.
00:26:24 --> 00:26:29 And, of course, there are some people who are already grown up and they also
00:26:29 --> 00:26:34 kind of see those influences, those, you know, scholarly men in the community
00:26:34 --> 00:26:37 who are, you know, doing things of substance.
00:26:38 --> 00:26:44 If there are people who are interested in joining the organization as a member
00:26:44 --> 00:26:47 of Alpha Phi Alpha, what steps should they take?
00:26:48 --> 00:26:51 When we start with that, start with that. Dave, you listening? Dave, you listening?
00:26:55 --> 00:27:00 I had a feeling that was the right question. Go ahead.
00:27:00 --> 00:27:04 I'll tell you the real quick answer, right?
00:27:04 --> 00:27:11 Besides just knowing an alpha is, is Google your local chapter and then reach out.
00:27:11 --> 00:27:15 Cause it has on, on the websites of the, you know, the local chapters,
00:27:16 --> 00:27:17 particularly an alpha, I'll say.
00:27:18 --> 00:27:22 It has all the officers, and you want to look for the chapter dean,
00:27:23 --> 00:27:27 the dean of membership development, the intake coordinator, however it's listed,
00:27:27 --> 00:27:31 and then reach out to that brother, and you will get a response.
00:27:34 --> 00:27:38 All right. Thank you. The other thing that I would suggest is to,
00:27:38 --> 00:27:42 you know, now everything, you know, you can Google most things,
00:27:42 --> 00:27:43 but get some information.
00:27:44 --> 00:27:48 Yes. You know, you're going to meet some people, but then you need to also maybe,
00:27:48 --> 00:27:53 you know, look into, you know, some of the national programs that we do kind
00:27:53 --> 00:27:56 of also maybe understand the history.
00:27:56 --> 00:28:01 Yes. More of the fraternity and, you know, other organizations,
00:28:01 --> 00:28:04 but, you know, do, do your homework.
00:28:05 --> 00:28:08 That's, that's an important piece. Can I speak to that real quick too?
00:28:09 --> 00:28:15 Sure. Because I'll tell you, nothing, yeah, please, I'll just leave it at that.
00:28:15 --> 00:28:19 Do your homework, because I can't tell you how many people I've seen who've
00:28:19 --> 00:28:24 thought about joining one organization and ended up at another organization
00:28:24 --> 00:28:27 because they didn't do their homework. Right. Yeah.
00:28:30 --> 00:28:34 Well, staying in line with what you guys are talking about there,
00:28:35 --> 00:28:42 do you guys feel that the outflows,
00:28:43 --> 00:28:50 as far as the people who are pledging in school now and, you know,
00:28:50 --> 00:28:52 at the schools that they're pledging at,
00:28:52 --> 00:28:56 and for even those that are doing the graduate chapters and so forth,
00:28:56 --> 00:29:04 do you feel that they're in line with each other as far as all the values and
00:29:04 --> 00:29:09 everything because right you know i look at i look at the d9s now and i remember
00:29:09 --> 00:29:11 how things were when i was in school,
00:29:12 --> 00:29:16 and looking at even how they were pledged and.
00:29:17 --> 00:29:21 You know, a lot of the things, I mean, they still say the core values are still
00:29:21 --> 00:29:25 there, but I mean, you know, but it's just, you know, things,
00:29:25 --> 00:29:28 of course, we're in a progressive day and time now.
00:29:28 --> 00:29:34 So things are definitely more progressive now. But do you think that what's
00:29:34 --> 00:29:43 being done in school is it falls in line with everything as far as the alpha stand for,
00:29:43 --> 00:29:47 even those who are pledging grad chapter as well?
00:29:47 --> 00:29:51 I mean, you know, because I see, you know, when you look at nowadays,
00:29:51 --> 00:29:58 we see, you know, unfortunately, and fortunately, we have social media.
00:29:58 --> 00:30:03 So we see a lot of the stuff on social media with a lot of the schools,
00:30:03 --> 00:30:07 you know, or a lot of the sororities or fraternities.
00:30:07 --> 00:30:12 And, you know, you see some doing things one way, you see some doing things
00:30:12 --> 00:30:14 another way. What's your guys' thoughts
00:30:14 --> 00:30:20 on seeing how things are done now versus how they used to be done?
00:30:20 --> 00:30:27 Well, what I'll tell you, you hit the nail on the head first off when you said the core values.
00:30:27 --> 00:30:37 The core values are going to be the same for anyone coming through the doors of Alpha, right?
00:30:37 --> 00:30:43 There's, you know, the program that's put in place, a national or even international,
00:30:43 --> 00:30:48 because we're international, programs that are put in place with regards to membership.
00:30:49 --> 00:30:53 So core values are going to be the setting.
00:30:54 --> 00:31:02 So, you know, what you run into is that each school is going to kind of want
00:31:02 --> 00:31:05 to put their own twist on it, right? Right.
00:31:06 --> 00:31:12 There'll be some things that may be done that are maybe traditional for a particular school.
00:31:12 --> 00:31:20 However, everyone will be singing from the same sheet music in terms of here's the plan.
00:31:21 --> 00:31:30 This is how the person goes from being interested to being a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha.
00:31:30 --> 00:31:35 So from that perspective, it's going to stay. I can say to you that,
00:31:35 --> 00:31:37 yes, those things stay in line.
00:31:38 --> 00:31:45 You know, unfortunately, and nobody has a monopoly on it, unfortunately,
00:31:45 --> 00:31:50 there's some things that happen outside of those guidelines or those guide rails,
00:31:50 --> 00:31:53 and that's not a new phenomenon.
00:31:53 --> 00:31:58 That's something that's been going on since, you know, the beginning,
00:31:58 --> 00:32:05 right? I remember reading things or articles in Jet Magazine or Ebony Magazine
00:32:05 --> 00:32:08 about hazing incidents and things like that when I was a kid.
00:32:08 --> 00:32:13 So much so that when I went online, I didn't even tell my parents that I was going online.
00:32:15 --> 00:32:19 So now, as you pointed out, Dave, we've got social media.
00:32:19 --> 00:32:25 So things take on a life of its own. You know, something may happen,
00:32:25 --> 00:32:32 and before you know it, it's spread all over the country, all over the world, and it lives in infamy.
00:32:32 --> 00:32:37 It never has an opportunity to go away. It's always going to be there.
00:32:37 --> 00:32:42 So there are some unfortunate things that happen, and, you know,
00:32:42 --> 00:32:47 there are steps that are put in place to deal with those things immediately.
00:32:47 --> 00:32:52 Yeah. Right? You don't try to sweep it under the rug. It's dealt with.
00:32:52 --> 00:32:59 The way that it should be. So hopefully that answered your question.
00:32:59 --> 00:33:04 And if I can add, too, Dave, just for clarity's sake, we no longer have pledge lines.
00:33:05 --> 00:33:07 That's kind of an older terminology.
00:33:08 --> 00:33:12 And that sometimes carries a
00:33:12 --> 00:33:17 negative connotation to people who are not affiliated with the D9 as well.
00:33:18 --> 00:33:25 Right. But again, the core values have remained the same since 1906. Yes, sir. Yep.
00:33:26 --> 00:33:29 Yeah. All right. Well, hopefully that will be,
00:33:31 --> 00:33:37 somebody who's listening right now who's trying to make up their mind that will
00:33:37 --> 00:33:42 help with making their mind up as far as what direction to go.
00:33:43 --> 00:33:49 I was sitting here thinking about what it looks like where you have a bunch
00:33:49 --> 00:33:58 of men and women dressed up, hats, dressed in the nines at a horse racing event,
00:33:59 --> 00:34:00 having a good time,
00:34:01 --> 00:34:03 grown and sexy, like you said.
00:34:03 --> 00:34:08 Right? Who wouldn't want to be at something like that with a bunch of black
00:34:08 --> 00:34:11 people and just having a good time?
00:34:12 --> 00:34:19 You know what I'm saying? Okay. So, yeah, that's something that's very, very intriguing.
00:34:19 --> 00:34:22 Being very, because Leonard was just saying, not too long ago,
00:34:22 --> 00:34:27 Leonard was saying, you know, how a lot of these things have been popping up over the last,
00:34:27 --> 00:34:32 really over the last 10 years, they've really gotten popular with these type
00:34:32 --> 00:34:35 of events, even with like Oscar parties and stuff like that.
00:34:35 --> 00:34:41 So people are doing things like this and they're doing it in their sororities
00:34:41 --> 00:34:46 and in their fraternities and so forth. So it's really cool to see something like this.
00:34:47 --> 00:34:51 And, you know, when you look at the history, especially when it comes to the Kentucky Derby.
00:34:52 --> 00:34:58 You know, a lot of people don't understand, you know, 15 out of the first 28
00:34:58 --> 00:35:03 Kentucky Derbys had black jockeys running those races.
00:35:04 --> 00:35:09 The first five Kentucky Derbys now, you got to do your research, people.
00:35:09 --> 00:35:13 First five Kentucky Derbys were won by black jockeys.
00:35:14 --> 00:35:17 Okay. You know, and so we were always there.
00:35:17 --> 00:35:23 You know, we were always there. You know, it's just like we were always at the baseball games.
00:35:23 --> 00:35:26 We were always at the basketball games. We were always at the football games.
00:35:26 --> 00:35:29 We didn't get the acknowledgement, but we were there.
00:35:30 --> 00:35:35 But when you look at a lot of the old movies and so forth, and,
00:35:35 --> 00:35:39 you know, every time you see they pan on, you know, especially at a horse race,
00:35:40 --> 00:35:42 you always see a bunch of white people.
00:35:42 --> 00:35:46 And you say to yourself, okay, come on now. We were there. We,
00:35:46 --> 00:35:51 you know, even if we were in the stables, we were there. You know what I'm saying?
00:35:51 --> 00:35:53 So you can't erase our history.
00:35:54 --> 00:35:59 So doing an event like this, this is a way to show that we stand tall,
00:35:59 --> 00:36:04 we stand proud, and we look good while we're doing it as well.
00:36:04 --> 00:36:08 So I really applaud you, brothers, in doing something like this.
00:36:08 --> 00:36:13 And you guys who are listening, this is a great event. I mean,
00:36:13 --> 00:36:18 it's something that you, you know, that you should want to come to be a part of.
00:36:18 --> 00:36:20 And you guys that are divine nines.
00:36:22 --> 00:36:26 You know, and, you know, it's and one thing I have noticed over the years,
00:36:26 --> 00:36:29 too, is not the division that it used to be.
00:36:29 --> 00:36:35 Like when I was coming up, you know, you know, they didn't really mix with each other.
00:36:35 --> 00:36:39 You know, you know, the kids were over here. The outfits were there.
00:36:39 --> 00:36:44 You know, everybody kind of do their little jabs at each other or whatever. And they still do it.
00:36:44 --> 00:36:48 But there's a lot more together. Like if you look on social media now,
00:36:48 --> 00:36:52 you see a lot of them perform, you know, doing their videos together and so
00:36:52 --> 00:36:54 forth, you know, so it's really cool.
00:36:54 --> 00:37:00 Yeah. So when you do an event like this, I'm sure that everybody will come and so forth.
00:37:01 --> 00:37:05 But I want to know why the song Wipe Me Down.
00:37:10 --> 00:37:14 I always wondered about that because you know when I think about all the songs
00:37:14 --> 00:37:21 that are that are associated with all the divine nine people you know and you say to yourself okay,
00:37:22 --> 00:37:26 how'd that happen you know so tell me about that do either one of you know the
00:37:26 --> 00:37:29 history Leonard I know Leonard doesn't so I'm not asking,
00:37:30 --> 00:37:34 but do any of y'all know the history about behind that song being told nope
00:37:35 --> 00:37:42 Well, I can tell you, I can give you an American bandstand answer, right?
00:37:43 --> 00:37:49 It's got a good groove, and the brothers can move to it. Seriously.
00:37:51 --> 00:37:56 Oh, yeah. I mean, that's a young brother phenomenon. Yeah.
00:37:57 --> 00:38:01 My son knows all of those movies. What was your song coming up?
00:38:02 --> 00:38:09 Well, for me, the first song, well, Alpha didn't really have a song.
00:38:09 --> 00:38:11 Like, the only people that really had a song. Yeah, y'all were too bougie.
00:38:11 --> 00:38:14 I know, I understand. But go ahead. No, no, no.
00:38:14 --> 00:38:19 The only people that really had a song, when I think about it from my perspective. Omega Si-Fi.
00:38:19 --> 00:38:24 Right, because that was an easy, that was a softball. Yeah, it was. It was.
00:38:24 --> 00:38:28 It was. That's why they made George Clinton out front of the huge. Yeah, I know.
00:38:28 --> 00:38:31 They grabbed onto that. the cap is grabbed on
00:38:31 --> 00:38:34 to flashlight yeah yeah you know
00:38:34 --> 00:38:37 pledging in the south alpha south you know
00:38:37 --> 00:38:41 i don't recall that we had a particular song we
00:38:41 --> 00:38:44 just jammed on everything right we just we
00:38:44 --> 00:38:47 just we made whatever we wanted to be
00:38:47 --> 00:38:50 that day or that night that was our song and we
00:38:50 --> 00:38:53 would storm storm the floor but you know
00:38:53 --> 00:38:57 as you look at look at it now everybody kind
00:38:57 --> 00:38:59 of like has their there's their thing yeah they did
00:38:59 --> 00:39:03 yeah i went to regional convention i
00:39:03 --> 00:39:09 wasn't no district convention over the winter down in dc and the brothers had
00:39:09 --> 00:39:16 a uh an after party and so i i went and so the dj did a little set where he
00:39:16 --> 00:39:19 played each organization's.
00:39:20 --> 00:39:29 Song. And it was this one Sigma Gamma Row that went out there for representing
00:39:29 --> 00:39:33 her sorority on their song, which I think,
00:39:34 --> 00:39:37 is like Shake That Monkey or something crazy.
00:39:38 --> 00:39:43 And she brought the house down by herself.
00:39:44 --> 00:39:49 By herself. But, you know, it was cool to see everybody go out and do their thing.
00:39:49 --> 00:39:53 But this one young lady brought the house down by
00:39:53 --> 00:39:56 herself so it's all in good fun you know we we've
00:39:56 --> 00:40:01 done it you know like i said whatever we want the song to be that's what it's
00:40:01 --> 00:40:07 going to be and i guess the young brothers decided on wipe me down if you follow
00:40:07 --> 00:40:11 social media there's one or two other songs you'll see him getting into a groove
00:40:11 --> 00:40:16 too as well right right yeah and dave i was going to say in the 2000s,
00:40:16 --> 00:40:20 the big alpha song was the DOS effects. Yeah, okay. Yeah.
00:40:21 --> 00:40:27 We could have that doo-doo-doo. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right, exactly.
00:40:28 --> 00:40:32 Naboo, did you have one? Oh, no, man. I crossed, let me see,
00:40:32 --> 00:40:36 I've crossed in the last, it'll be 10 years for me in October.
00:40:36 --> 00:40:39 So I'm new school to these brothers right here.
00:40:41 --> 00:40:46 Well, hey, Naboo, don't feel bad Cause even though I heard all the songs, I have two left feet.
00:40:46 --> 00:40:50 So I'm, I was always watching from the side. Yeah.
00:40:50 --> 00:40:53 Yeah. His song was to the left, to the left.
00:40:55 --> 00:41:01 You know? Yeah. I will tell you though, when we did, I did do a probate when
00:41:01 --> 00:41:07 I was initiated in 2016 and I came out to the hypnotic, uh, by Biggie. Oh, okay.
00:41:07 --> 00:41:11 All right. All right. My line, so the song,
00:41:12 --> 00:41:20 request line was out when I was going through my process and for a variety of
00:41:20 --> 00:41:22 different reasons, Dean and the,
00:41:23 --> 00:41:29 Big Brothers decided that would be the name of our line, was the request line. The request line.
00:41:31 --> 00:41:34 So, you know, that's the song that has special meaning to me.
00:41:35 --> 00:41:41 Hey, as a matter of fact, remember last year when we were, I'm talking about
00:41:41 --> 00:41:46 the Eagles, when we were on our Super Bowl run, what was the song by Too Short?
00:41:47 --> 00:41:48 Yeah. Blow the Whistle. Blow the Whistle.
00:41:50 --> 00:41:55 That's huge down in Texas. Yeah, okay. You know, that's used by just about,
00:41:55 --> 00:42:02 let me say, I think all the guys at some point have used that song at some point.
00:42:03 --> 00:42:10 Because, you know, but, you know, I think I've seen it more associated with the Sigmas.
00:42:11 --> 00:42:13 Okay. Yeah, with the Sigmas mostly.
00:42:14 --> 00:42:16 Down in Texas, Alphazen stole it.
00:42:17 --> 00:42:24 Oh, okay. All right. Well, look, look, look, we last year, it was all over the place, man.
00:42:24 --> 00:42:28 We were, you know, it was all over the place last year.
00:42:28 --> 00:42:31 So, yeah, but, but, okay.
00:42:31 --> 00:42:36 All right. Well, do me a favor, guys. Go ahead and plug the event.
00:42:37 --> 00:42:42 Give it and make sure you let everybody know how they can get tickets,
00:42:42 --> 00:42:43 where they can get tickets.
00:42:45 --> 00:42:49 I, you know, we didn't put the cost out there. I don't even know whether you
00:42:49 --> 00:42:53 guys wanted to do that or just had them go to the website or whatever.
00:42:53 --> 00:42:55 We were leaving that up to you.
00:42:55 --> 00:43:00 But did the event go in and put all that information out there again for those
00:43:00 --> 00:43:05 people that, you know, are still using paper and pen to write stuff down?
00:43:08 --> 00:43:13 Does the site have a QR code that you can scan and all of that?
00:43:14 --> 00:43:20 Yes. Okay. So again, it's May 2nd from 6 to 9 p.m. at Delaware Park.
00:43:20 --> 00:43:22 I believe it's the Liberty Room.
00:43:22 --> 00:43:25 Tickets can be purchased. You can go to Camothade Lambda website.
00:43:26 --> 00:43:32 Also, if you're on Facebook, I know the NPHC, the Newcastle County NPHC has posted the flyer.
00:43:32 --> 00:43:38 It does have a QR code on it, which will take you to the Zephy site,
00:43:38 --> 00:43:41 which is how you make your payment and you put all your information in and then
00:43:41 --> 00:43:44 come join us. Frank, did I miss anything?
00:43:44 --> 00:43:49 Just one quick correction, like you said, May 2nd, from 6 to 10.
00:43:50 --> 00:43:53 6 to 10. Thank you. Thank you. From 6 to 10.
00:43:53 --> 00:43:57 A key factor that people may ask, and it's clearly on the flyer,
00:43:58 --> 00:44:01 there's a limited open bar, which...
00:44:01 --> 00:44:04 Well, you have to pay and come and figure out what that is.
00:44:06 --> 00:44:09 But trust me, the bar will be over.
00:44:09 --> 00:44:13 Yeah, okay. And food is included in everything, right? Buffet.
00:44:14 --> 00:44:18 Buffet. Buffet dinner. Buffet dinner. Okay. Big dinner. Okay. All right.
00:44:19 --> 00:44:22 And, you know, you got plenty of entertainment, and you got,
00:44:22 --> 00:44:25 you said the brother Tanksley is his name?
00:44:25 --> 00:44:34 Tanksley will be performing during our dinner hour, which will be probably about like 6.30 into the 7.
00:44:34 --> 00:44:43 6.30 to 7 race time, I think, is like between about 5 or 6 after 7 is the race time.
00:44:43 --> 00:44:48 So you'll have an opportunity if you're outside to view the race on the big
00:44:48 --> 00:44:51 screen out on the racetrack and then around the room.
00:44:51 --> 00:44:59 The room is surrounded by television monitors, so you'll have opportunities to take in the race.
00:44:59 --> 00:45:02 So you don't have to scramble and try to see it on your phone.
00:45:03 --> 00:45:10 And again, this is going to be an ice-cold event on May 2nd from 6 to 10 at Delaware Park.
00:45:10 --> 00:45:16 Okay. And I'm going to add that you got our buddy, DJ Tim Dog,
00:45:17 --> 00:45:19 spinning on the ones and twos that day.
00:45:20 --> 00:45:27 And by the way, he's celebrating his birthday this Saturday at Timothy's at the Riverfront.
00:45:27 --> 00:45:33 So if any of your brothers or sisters who never heard him play and wanted to
00:45:33 --> 00:45:37 check him out, that might be a good day to check him out.
00:45:37 --> 00:45:42 And, you know, it's open to the public. And that's Saturday evening on the 11th.
00:45:43 --> 00:45:46 He's celebrating his birthday starting at around 7 o'clock.
00:45:46 --> 00:45:51 So that's at the Riverfront. For those who might want to come over and check him out.
00:45:52 --> 00:45:57 So you guys already get a sample of what you're going to be in for on May 2nd.
00:45:58 --> 00:45:59 Got it.
00:46:01 --> 00:46:07 All right, guys, that's our interview portion of the show.
00:46:07 --> 00:46:12 And normally, right now, we usually get into our little topics and everything.
00:46:12 --> 00:46:15 If you guys want to hang out with us, we can go through a few of these topics
00:46:15 --> 00:46:18 and get your opinions on them. Sure, why not?
00:46:19 --> 00:46:25 You guys, okay? Yeah, yeah. All right, so let's go with the first one.
00:46:25 --> 00:46:30 I figure since we got you guys on, I'll go over the do's and the don'ts of pledging
00:46:30 --> 00:46:32 a Divine Nine organization.
00:46:33 --> 00:46:38 Okay. So I'm going to read this, and then we're going to have a little conversation about it. Okay.
00:46:39 --> 00:46:43 Pledging a Divine Nine organization requires intense dedication,
00:46:44 --> 00:46:47 research, and genuine community service.
00:46:47 --> 00:46:53 Do build authentic relationships with members, maintain a high grade point average,
00:46:54 --> 00:46:55 and attend public events.
00:46:56 --> 00:46:58 Don't express thirst, desperation.
00:46:59 --> 00:47:08 Post publicly about your interests or try to take shortcuts as membership is
00:47:08 --> 00:47:11 a lifelong elite commitment.
00:47:11 --> 00:47:12 So these are the do's.
00:47:14 --> 00:47:20 Do your research. I think Brother Frank, well, both of you said this earlier.
00:47:20 --> 00:47:25 Learn the history, founders, and values of specific organizations.
00:47:26 --> 00:47:30 Do build authentic relationships, attend events,
00:47:30 --> 00:47:36 introduce yourself to members, and let them get to know you generally,
00:47:36 --> 00:47:41 not just because you want to join. Do the service.
00:47:42 --> 00:47:49 I mean, I'm sorry. Do serve the community, engage in consistent long-term community
00:47:49 --> 00:47:54 service, not just hours logged right before intake.
00:47:54 --> 00:48:01 Do maintain grades, ensure your grade point average meets or exceeds the organization's requirements.
00:48:02 --> 00:48:07 Do be professional, maintain clean social media presence and reputation.
00:48:07 --> 00:48:12 And that's so funny now that you have to do that because before,
00:48:12 --> 00:48:16 remember, you didn't have to worry about that kind of stuff in the day, you know?
00:48:17 --> 00:48:20 Yeah, that's a big difference now. Yeah. Yeah.
00:48:20 --> 00:48:29 Do secure recommendations as far as identity and identify mentors or alumni
00:48:29 --> 00:48:33 who can speak to your character for letters of recommendation.
00:48:34 --> 00:48:38 Do be financially prepared. Understand
00:48:38 --> 00:48:43 that joining requires significant upfront fees and ongoing dues.
00:48:44 --> 00:48:50 Do keep it private. Keep your interest in the organization private and do not
00:48:50 --> 00:48:55 discuss your intentions on social media. Now, those are all the dues.
00:48:56 --> 00:48:59 Before I go to the don'ts, what do you guys think about the dues?
00:49:00 --> 00:49:01 Are they on point with this?
00:49:01 --> 00:49:06 You know, all three of you are alphas. Do you have anything to add or do you
00:49:06 --> 00:49:09 feel that this is on point?
00:49:10 --> 00:49:13 Yeah, I mean, it sounded adequate to me. Yeah, it's pretty solid.
00:49:14 --> 00:49:22 Yeah, they hit a lot of the do's, and I think you may or may not have said it,
00:49:22 --> 00:49:26 but from my perspective, be yourself, right?
00:49:26 --> 00:49:33 You can't pretend to be somebody else so that you can get people to like you, right?
00:49:34 --> 00:49:37 I mean, people do it all the time, but just be yourself.
00:49:37 --> 00:49:43 That was kind of my mindset because I was in, you know, a very different situation
00:49:43 --> 00:49:50 where I kind of had to make it known that I was interested because I was off campus,
00:49:50 --> 00:50:00 you know, attempting to get involved with an on-campus organization at a school where no one knew me,
00:50:00 --> 00:50:02 you know, outside of that.
00:50:02 --> 00:50:08 Like, I knew people practically every campus because I was never on my campus
00:50:08 --> 00:50:13 because socially it just wasn't happening.
00:50:14 --> 00:50:18 So, but in doing so, I was always myself.
00:50:19 --> 00:50:26 And so they were going like me for me or not. But also from the grades perspective
00:50:26 --> 00:50:30 and all those things, those things are very important, especially if you're
00:50:30 --> 00:50:33 going through on the undergraduate process.
00:50:33 --> 00:50:38 You know, when you look at the grad process, you know, that's more about,
00:50:38 --> 00:50:41 again, letting your record speak for yourself.
00:50:41 --> 00:50:44 Do you have a record of community service?
00:50:44 --> 00:50:48 Are you already doing things in the community? You know,
00:50:48 --> 00:50:53 what are some of the other organizations or things that you're involved in to,
00:50:53 --> 00:51:00 you know, improve, you know, everybody's surroundings with regards to the community, right?
00:51:00 --> 00:51:05 So that's a big piece of it and still, you know, all the history and knowing
00:51:05 --> 00:51:10 people and attending events and, you know, kind of letting your interest discreetly,
00:51:10 --> 00:51:12 letting your interest be benign.
00:51:13 --> 00:51:18 Okay. All right. All right. All right. So, we got through the do's.
00:51:18 --> 00:51:19 Let's hear about the don'ts.
00:51:20 --> 00:51:27 Don't chase or stalk. There is a difference between showing interest in being
00:51:27 --> 00:51:29 overwhelming or thirsty.
00:51:30 --> 00:51:37 Don't post on social media. Never publicly announce which organization you are trying to join.
00:51:38 --> 00:51:40 Don't wear potential letters.
00:51:41 --> 00:51:48 Do not wear the colors or letters of the organization you are interested in before you are a member.
00:51:48 --> 00:51:56 Don't mock or step. Do not try to imitate mock or step in front of members in
00:51:56 --> 00:51:59 public, particularly regarding strolling.
00:52:00 --> 00:52:01 Don't ask about.
00:52:02 --> 00:52:12 Intake. Never directly ask members when their next intake is or if they are having a line.
00:52:12 --> 00:52:15 Don't gossip or be negative.
00:52:15 --> 00:52:21 If you do not make a line, do not badmouth the organization.
00:52:22 --> 00:52:27 Don't lie on applications. We know that happens, by the way. We know that already.
00:52:28 --> 00:52:36 Don't lie on applications be truthful on all documentation as these organizations are very,
00:52:37 --> 00:52:42 meticulous about paperwork and then it gives a few critical tips but before
00:52:42 --> 00:52:45 I go to the critical tips what do you guys think about the don'ts,
00:52:46 --> 00:52:53 Dave where'd you get all this stuff man I'm a researcher this is what I do man this is what I do Leonard,
00:52:54 --> 00:52:58 I don't know how Leonard got in y'all's group but The whole thing is,
00:52:58 --> 00:53:05 you know, I, you know, I, you know, I, I try to make sure when, you know, and plus,
00:53:05 --> 00:53:09 look, I'm almost, I was almost an alpha, almost.
00:53:10 --> 00:53:12 I got kicked off the line. But anyway, so.
00:53:16 --> 00:53:21 Hey, Nate, Nate, for being too thirsty.
00:53:25 --> 00:53:27 Or for saying something about somebody that i
00:53:27 --> 00:53:30 didn't like i was gonna add another i was gonna add another another point
00:53:30 --> 00:53:35 don't don't do it don't do it don't say okay don't do it i'm gonna sit back
00:53:35 --> 00:53:43 okay yeah yeah because that that's one of the don'ts man don't do it yeah so
00:53:43 --> 00:53:48 so but i mean are the don'ts on point though i mean are we are we good with
00:53:48 --> 00:53:50 those i'm gonna add another one too,
00:53:51 --> 00:53:57 don't be presumptuous right and I say that because I had it before I became
00:53:57 --> 00:54:00 a member I had tried to become a member,
00:54:01 --> 00:54:06 And I assumed that when I paid my money, I was going to become a member.
00:54:08 --> 00:54:14 Okay. So that's why I say don't be presumptuous. Because I used to be chapter
00:54:14 --> 00:54:15 dean down in San Antonio.
00:54:15 --> 00:54:19 And one thing I used to always tell people, it is not my job to make you an alpha.
00:54:20 --> 00:54:24 It is your job to do the work to become an alpha.
00:54:25 --> 00:54:30 Right? And I'm sure any D9 organization would probably say the same thing.
00:54:30 --> 00:54:33 But, yeah, don't be presumptuous. Okay.
00:54:34 --> 00:54:36 All right. I agree with that. All right.
00:54:37 --> 00:54:41 They do give a few critical tips. It says be patient.
00:54:42 --> 00:54:49 The process is designed to be exclusive. And for many, it takes time to be selected.
00:54:50 --> 00:54:52 Be yourself. There you go, Frank.
00:54:53 --> 00:54:59 Be yourself. So focus on showcasing your own leadership, character,
00:54:59 --> 00:55:04 and service rather than acting like a member before you are one.
00:55:04 --> 00:55:05 Naboo, you were right on point, man.
00:55:07 --> 00:55:12 Focus on the service. The Divine Nine are service-based organizations.
00:55:13 --> 00:55:19 Focus on the why of the service, not just the prestige of the letters.
00:55:19 --> 00:55:21 So that was the critical tips.
00:55:22 --> 00:55:24 So basically everything that
00:55:24 --> 00:55:27 you guys just pointed out was right there in them critical tips as well.
00:55:27 --> 00:55:30 So for you guys that are listening,
00:55:31 --> 00:55:37 that are thinking about, you know, if you're going to pledge in school,
00:55:37 --> 00:55:40 and, you know, we got a lot of young people who are going to be going to school
00:55:40 --> 00:55:44 and looking at Divine Nine situations and organizations.
00:55:45 --> 00:55:48 So you know this is stuff that you need to really
00:55:48 --> 00:55:51 check out and listen to and for those
00:55:51 --> 00:55:56 that are looking at getting in on you know grad chapters or or you know as far
00:55:56 --> 00:56:01 as that you know getting in that way this is all stuff that you got to pay attention
00:56:01 --> 00:56:06 to and and learn the things that you need to do do your research and try to
00:56:06 --> 00:56:09 make sure you're making the best choice for yourself,
00:56:10 --> 00:56:13 I just thought about another don't.
00:56:14 --> 00:56:24 If your kids are about to go to college and you and your wife or significant other are members of D9.
00:56:25 --> 00:56:30 Depending on, well, I would say depending on the college campus,
00:56:30 --> 00:56:33 Do not wear your paraphernalia,
00:56:34 --> 00:56:46 especially if your son or daughter is interested in becoming a member of a particular organization.
00:56:46 --> 00:56:52 Because people kind of look at that as like, oh, they think just because their
00:56:52 --> 00:57:00 dad or their mom is X, Y, Z, they're going to just automatically get in. Thank you.
00:57:00 --> 00:57:05 Right. So my wife. So the legacy thing doesn't hold true in some cases.
00:57:06 --> 00:57:08 No, no, not saying that. Okay.
00:57:09 --> 00:57:12 I'm just saying you don't want to, you talked about like the things that kind
00:57:12 --> 00:57:16 of keep to yourself. Right. Yeah. Okay.
00:57:17 --> 00:57:21 That's one of those ones. My wife adhered to that a little more than I did.
00:57:21 --> 00:57:25 I wasn't really all that concerned about it, but, but she, uh,
00:57:25 --> 00:57:30 whenever we went on any of the campuses that, and all our kids went to HBC.
00:57:30 --> 00:57:32 HBCUs and she went to an HBCU.
00:57:32 --> 00:57:36 So I'm the only oddity in my house that didn't go to an HBCU.
00:57:37 --> 00:57:41 But, you know, she would not wear any of her Delta stuff.
00:57:42 --> 00:57:49 So that's a don't for the parents. Okay. Yeah.
00:57:50 --> 00:57:54 Does your wife, Leonard, your wife wear a lot of her stuff? She does.
00:57:55 --> 00:58:01 My wife is a Hampton undergrad, AKA, and she's deep in it.
00:58:01 --> 00:58:06 So they have their line, text message chat.
00:58:06 --> 00:58:08 Anytime we go to Atlanta, they get together.
00:58:09 --> 00:58:15 I can't say she wears a lot of AKA stuff, but pink and green? Oh my goodness.
00:58:16 --> 00:58:19 Okay. Crazy shoes, skirts, pants, you know, like.
00:58:19 --> 00:58:23 So you know who she is, then, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I'm going to say.
00:58:23 --> 00:58:29 AKs in particular, they're known for even if they don't have the paraphernalia
00:58:29 --> 00:58:33 on, you're going to be like, you're going to be watching pink top.
00:58:34 --> 00:58:38 Right, right. You know what I mean? Yeah. I never understood that.
00:58:38 --> 00:58:40 Combination, by the way. Never did.
00:58:40 --> 00:58:48 And Dave, on top of that, many to most to all, she refuses to wear red.
00:58:49 --> 00:58:54 Wow. And just letting you know, one time early in our anniversary period,
00:58:54 --> 00:58:55 I thought I was doing something.
00:58:55 --> 00:58:57 I came home with red flowers, you know, roses.
00:58:58 --> 00:59:04 And I went down in the basement to, you know, do some work. And I came back up there pissed.
00:59:04 --> 00:59:08 And Dave, I'm not talking about like, ha ha, I'm talking about,
00:59:08 --> 00:59:12 you know, another thing I want to tell you.
00:59:12 --> 00:59:16 And I was like, okay, lesson learned.
00:59:18 --> 00:59:22 Well, so that never happened again, I'll tell you. No, no, no.
00:59:22 --> 00:59:26 Okay. All right. All right. Well.
00:59:27 --> 00:59:31 Okay, well, I'm going to move on to our next subject.
00:59:32 --> 00:59:36 I thought this was a decent subject to talk about, especially with the world,
00:59:36 --> 00:59:41 the way we are right now, dealing with all the craziness in the world today.
00:59:41 --> 00:59:51 So this subject is called talk therapy. It's good for maintaining an active brain.
00:59:52 --> 00:59:55 Now, especially as we are getting older, we have to, you know,
00:59:55 --> 00:59:59 our brain kind of processes things differently, and we're looking at things
00:59:59 --> 01:00:02 differently as we go through.
01:00:03 --> 01:00:07 And I just thought this was a good subject I came across when I saw this.
01:00:07 --> 01:00:09 So I'm going to read a little bit of it.
01:00:09 --> 01:00:16 It says, Brain Health is a unique series focused on how to help you age well.
01:00:17 --> 01:00:25 These stories have been created in cooperation with our favorite people, AARP, and Word in Black.
01:00:25 --> 01:00:31 It says, from spontaneous conversations at the local park to everlasting friendships
01:00:31 --> 01:00:37 that transcends international boundaries, social connection is a natural part of being human.
01:00:37 --> 01:00:44 It is helpful to have a few reliable people around as we navigate life's ups
01:00:44 --> 01:00:50 and downs. As we age, we can experience feelings that can be hard to recover from.
01:00:50 --> 01:00:57 It says AARP's Global Council on Brain Health recommends socializing is an essential
01:00:57 --> 01:01:01 activity for maintaining a sharp mind.
01:01:01 --> 01:01:05 And, you know, I'll add, you know, here we go with the socializing and so forth.
01:01:05 --> 01:01:11 So being in these organizations that you guys are part of, being in an organization
01:01:11 --> 01:01:15 such as that, that also helps with keeping the brain sharpened and,
01:01:15 --> 01:01:19 you know, because of the type of events and so forth that you do.
01:01:19 --> 01:01:27 But for people feeling anxious or depressed or dealing with a neurological disorder,
01:01:27 --> 01:01:33 taking to a professional therapist may be particularly useful.
01:01:33 --> 01:01:38 The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that
01:01:38 --> 01:01:48 19.4% of adults over the age of 65 have received counseling or therapy within the past 12 months.
01:01:49 --> 01:01:56 A slightly higher percentage than adults ages 18 to 44, which is only 18.5%.
01:01:56 --> 01:02:02 Depending on your needs, short or long-term counseling can help.
01:02:02 --> 01:02:09 It said, Eric Corral, 65, began weekly talk therapy sessions in 2013 to get
01:02:09 --> 01:02:14 some much-needed support when his girlfriend had a stroke.
01:02:15 --> 01:02:21 That left her with aphasia, a brain disorder that affects speech.
01:02:21 --> 01:02:29 She could barely move her mouth to say a sentence. Slurred words, he remembers.
01:02:29 --> 01:02:31 No eye contact.
01:02:31 --> 01:02:37 She had to see a speech pathologist to get her back on track.
01:02:37 --> 01:02:41 It was stressful because she was my confidant.
01:02:42 --> 01:02:46 When she couldn't talk, I really needed someone to talk to.
01:02:46 --> 01:02:51 Correll's therapy sessions helped him identify and manage his emotions while
01:02:51 --> 01:02:52 caring for his girlfriend.
01:02:53 --> 01:02:57 After one year, he shifted to monthly phone calls.
01:02:57 --> 01:03:02 He encouraged his people to talk with someone when life gets overwhelming.
01:03:02 --> 01:03:09 There's various types of talk therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy.
01:03:09 --> 01:03:14 This approach focuses on identifying and challenging negative or inaccurate
01:03:14 --> 01:03:20 thoughts, learning, self-help, strategies, and changing behaviors.
01:03:21 --> 01:03:26 There's interpersonal therapy. The goal here is to examine how the patient gets
01:03:26 --> 01:03:32 along with romantic partners, family, colleagues, friends, and neighbors.
01:03:32 --> 01:03:37 Interpersonal therapy sessions might be individualized or helped in group settings.
01:03:37 --> 01:03:42 The therapist wants to help identify solutions for conflicts,
01:03:43 --> 01:03:46 resolve issues from the past as well as the present.
01:03:47 --> 01:03:54 Integrative therapy. Rather than focusing on specific thoughts or behaviors,
01:03:54 --> 01:03:59 this practice centers on an individual's sense of self, who they are now,
01:03:59 --> 01:04:07 who they have been, who they desire to be, and how to get there.
01:04:07 --> 01:04:12 Peral's name has been changed to respect his help and privacy. So.
01:04:13 --> 01:04:17 When you hear these things, and all of us are men of certain ages.
01:04:18 --> 01:04:26 You know, we all feel that things have changed when it comes to us as far as
01:04:26 --> 01:04:28 our brains, the way we think.
01:04:28 --> 01:04:32 Even trying to remember something that happened five minutes ago could be a challenge.
01:04:33 --> 01:04:38 What's your guys' thoughts on what I just read and what you guys just heard?
01:04:40 --> 01:04:44 So Dave you know it's kind of funny because um I actually did a kind of like
01:04:44 --> 01:04:51 a brain health exam I was at an event and there were some people from the University of Delaware,
01:04:52 --> 01:04:58 I won't say dementia clinic but they were kind of doing some preliminary study trials.
01:04:59 --> 01:05:04 So one of the things that they mentioned kind of like what you said when you
01:05:04 --> 01:05:05 talked about the socializing.
01:05:05 --> 01:05:10 They said that that was a big thing and kind of keeping the brain active along
01:05:10 --> 01:05:15 with other things like eating properly, exercising, getting enough sleep and all that as well.
01:05:15 --> 01:05:19 So, you know, I do think that is an interesting.
01:05:19 --> 01:05:22 And I think a lot of times when we hear about people with depression,
01:05:22 --> 01:05:29 it seems like either they self-isolate themselves or they are, you,
01:05:30 --> 01:05:32 you know, kind of, you know, always by themselves. So, I mean,
01:05:32 --> 01:05:36 long story short, I think socializing with others is a,
01:05:36 --> 01:05:41 you know, something major for depression, for brain health, probably for a lot
01:05:41 --> 01:05:45 of the, you know, the illnesses we have as well. Yeah.
01:05:45 --> 01:05:50 And I think, you know, for so long in the black community, you know,
01:05:50 --> 01:05:54 kind of talking to someone has been kind of stigmatized.
01:05:54 --> 01:06:00 And I think we're starting to come out of that, man. But I think that's always a huge help.
01:06:01 --> 01:06:06 When I first moved to Texas, I had to sit down and I had to go see a therapist
01:06:06 --> 01:06:11 because I had moved back home from Atlanta and I was only here for a year and
01:06:11 --> 01:06:13 I really didn't want to leave.
01:06:14 --> 01:06:17 But it was a job I couldn't turn down.
01:06:17 --> 01:06:20 It was an opportunity that I really couldn't turn down. But
01:06:20 --> 01:06:24 I kind of struggled with that for a long time and i
01:06:24 --> 01:06:28 had to you know had to go see somebody and talk to him about it man but yeah we
01:06:28 --> 01:06:31 we we have to we got
01:06:31 --> 01:06:37 to come out of that stigma and as far as it goes for brain health you know i
01:06:37 --> 01:06:44 think it's definitely you know that connection between brain you know ear brain
01:06:44 --> 01:06:49 mouth and and listening and and talking you know can only be good it.
01:06:50 --> 01:06:57 I would say just briefly, my family has a history of dementia.
01:06:57 --> 01:07:04 So we've been able to identify that it primarily runs on my father's mother's side.
01:07:04 --> 01:07:12 So I've seen my father be affected by it, his sister, some of his first cousins, uncles.
01:07:13 --> 01:07:18 And so my two siblings and I, you know, it's a concern for us.
01:07:19 --> 01:07:27 One of my siblings works in the, I think, the memory unit down at Penn.
01:07:27 --> 01:07:35 So she kind of keeps us apprised of the research and the things going on around brain health.
01:07:36 --> 01:07:41 So as I get, you know, as I get more seasoned and mature,
01:07:42 --> 01:07:50 or quite frankly, older in life, I'm thinking about ways to maybe use my brain
01:07:50 --> 01:07:55 more and, you know, to use this phone and the TV a lot less.
01:07:55 --> 01:08:01 Yeah. So, you know, over the Christmas break, I bought some puzzle magazines
01:08:01 --> 01:08:05 to start doing those in the evening versus,
01:08:05 --> 01:08:12 you know, being on the phone, trying to get back into a good workout routine.
01:08:13 --> 01:08:17 But, you know, the other piece of that that I heard you talk about or mention
01:08:17 --> 01:08:23 is that companionship or that interaction with other people.
01:08:23 --> 01:08:28 So that's important, one, to keep your mind sharp.
01:08:28 --> 01:08:35 But it's also important that, you know, if you're beginning to slip.
01:08:36 --> 01:08:41 Others are aware of it and may be able to bring things to your attention that
01:08:41 --> 01:08:44 you didn't even realize or, you know,
01:08:44 --> 01:08:52 just begin to see that change and make sure that your loved ones are aware of it as well.
01:08:53 --> 01:09:00 So brain health and that companionship or that interaction, I think, is very key.
01:09:00 --> 01:09:03 And Frank, you know, I think it's interesting what you said,
01:09:03 --> 01:09:08 too. when my father passed away a couple of years ago, he actually had dementia as well.
01:09:08 --> 01:09:13 And one of the signs that we picked up on that was just, you know,
01:09:13 --> 01:09:17 it's kind of like a no brainer for us is he would.
01:09:17 --> 01:09:23 And he was also an alpha GTL made and he would ask when his chapter meeting.
01:09:24 --> 01:09:29 And at that time, like clockwork, chapter meeting is always the second Saturday of the month.
01:09:30 --> 01:09:34 And so, you know, that was one of the things that kind of alerted us that,
01:09:34 --> 01:09:37 you know, his his memory was failing. Yeah.
01:09:38 --> 01:09:42 Yeah, that's tough.
01:09:42 --> 01:09:50 You know, like Frank said, as we get seasons older, you know, I'm 66.
01:09:50 --> 01:09:56 And I can tell, you know, the brain is changing. I can tell the memory.
01:09:57 --> 01:10:00 I get to admit, you know, sometimes when you sit there and you say,
01:10:00 --> 01:10:01 okay, I'm getting ready to do this.
01:10:01 --> 01:10:04 And then you sit there and then next thing you know, it'd be like,
01:10:04 --> 01:10:05 what was I doing right now?
01:10:06 --> 01:10:09 You know, that type of thing. And sometimes you sit there and you laugh and,
01:10:09 --> 01:10:10 you know, you'd be like, okay.
01:10:10 --> 01:10:15 But, you know, one of the scenes that always reminds me, and Leonard hates when
01:10:15 --> 01:10:19 I do this, but one of the things I always think about is, like,
01:10:19 --> 01:10:21 there's a scene from Imitation of Life.
01:10:22 --> 01:10:24 I know. No, no, no. Stop. Stop.
01:10:25 --> 01:10:29 And you don't even want to go there because I know these guys know who Imitation of Life is.
01:10:30 --> 01:10:33 They probably don't, but let's go. Okay. Anyway. Anyway.
01:10:34 --> 01:10:37 But, no. The family, the praise is together.
01:10:37 --> 01:10:44 Tyler Perry's movie with Sonal Latham and Taraji B. Henson and Kathy Bates.
01:10:45 --> 01:10:51 And remember, she was going through dementia when she took the trip with her friend.
01:10:51 --> 01:10:55 And remember when she came back, she was putting, pasting on her mirror,
01:10:55 --> 01:10:57 the names of all the people in her family.
01:10:58 --> 01:11:00 You remember that scene? Yeah.
01:11:00 --> 01:11:06 That scene always stuck out to me because, you know, of course, it's a thing to do.
01:11:07 --> 01:11:11 So you try to, you know, put little notes up there so you know who people are
01:11:11 --> 01:11:13 when you come in contact with them.
01:11:13 --> 01:11:19 But it's also scary as well, you know, that you have to do that, you know.
01:11:19 --> 01:11:23 So when you can have stuff like this that comes across, that's what made me talk about the story.
01:11:24 --> 01:11:27 When you have things like this that can help you with your your brain health,
01:11:28 --> 01:11:33 got to take advantage of it. And whatever will help you to, you know,
01:11:33 --> 01:11:37 keep your brain functioning for as long as you can keep it functioning.
01:11:39 --> 01:11:45 All right. So, all right. I think Leonard has a story that he wanted to talk about real quick.
01:11:45 --> 01:11:51 Yeah. So the last one, we'll just make it quick. But so this was an interesting article I saw online.
01:11:51 --> 01:11:56 So there's a reverend named David Hart, and he was talking about,
01:11:56 --> 01:12:03 I won't even call it a trend, but there seems to be an increase of people.
01:12:03 --> 01:12:06 And to be honest, I probably never even heard of it before a couple of years
01:12:06 --> 01:12:13 ago, but people who are actually denouncing the Greek organization that they joined,
01:12:13 --> 01:12:19 pledge, or have been initiated in publicly and via social media.
01:12:19 --> 01:12:20 And it's kind of gotten a lot of traction.
01:12:22 --> 01:12:26 And, you know, one of the things that he talks about is...
01:12:28 --> 01:12:34 He speaks on people denouncing an organization that has done so much for black
01:12:34 --> 01:12:39 culture, for the black community, for black families, for black youth.
01:12:39 --> 01:12:44 And one of the things that he said, let me see if I can find it again,
01:12:44 --> 01:12:45 because I thought it was really good.
01:12:45 --> 01:12:50 Okay, so he mentions how essential D9 organizations were in the civil rights
01:12:50 --> 01:12:57 movement, the women's suffrage march, modern activism, Black Lives Matter.
01:12:57 --> 01:13:00 He talked about, and Frank was kind of mentioning about it earlier,
01:13:01 --> 01:13:05 lifelong networks of professional and community leaders and,
01:13:05 --> 01:13:09 you know, brotherhood, sisterhood, friends and family, you know,
01:13:09 --> 01:13:11 outside of your normal family.
01:13:12 --> 01:13:18 And I just kind of wanted to get, you know, everybody's take on people who are
01:13:18 --> 01:13:24 publicly denouncing, you know, their fraternities or their sororities.
01:13:24 --> 01:13:29 I guess, Naboo, I'm sorry, will you just kind of get your impression?
01:13:31 --> 01:13:36 I'll tell you, and I'm kind of laughing because I've seen it, right, a lot.
01:13:36 --> 01:13:40 I've actually known a couple of people who have publicly denounced. Oh, wow. Okay. Right.
01:13:41 --> 01:13:43 And it's wild.
01:13:44 --> 01:13:51 Like one particular brother I know, it was a legacy, and he denounced. And I don't know.
01:13:52 --> 01:13:53 It's—I never—here's my thing.
01:13:54 --> 01:14:00 I've never made Alpha my fraternity. I've never made it my God, right?
01:14:01 --> 01:14:02 It is not something I worship.
01:14:02 --> 01:14:08 It's something I appreciate the value of for me, right?
01:14:09 --> 01:14:11 And what I do in the community and whatnot.
01:14:11 --> 01:14:17 But I've never put it above my relationship with God, you know?
01:14:17 --> 01:14:23 So I don't understand the trend, of course, because I'm not there.
01:14:23 --> 01:14:28 I'm not that person that wants to denounce publicly, right?
01:14:28 --> 01:14:34 But I don't get it. I hear people talk about, oh, they worship the God of this
01:14:34 --> 01:14:35 and they worship a lot of that.
01:14:35 --> 01:14:43 I've brought people into our organization and I'm looking for what they're talking about.
01:14:44 --> 01:14:49 You know what I'm saying? So I just don't get it to each his own or her own.
01:14:50 --> 01:14:54 But this goes back to something we said earlier, right?
01:14:54 --> 01:14:58 I think anybody who decides to join a Greek letter organization,
01:14:59 --> 01:15:01 a Black Greek letter organization.
01:15:01 --> 01:15:06 Needs to do their research, right? Because you can't tell me that all of a sudden
01:15:06 --> 01:15:13 you get initiated, then great revelation comes and, oh, we were bowing down to, yeah, come on, man.
01:15:14 --> 01:15:19 You know what I'm saying? I'll tell you, many years ago, I allowed my religion
01:15:19 --> 01:15:28 to influence me in the stepping away from another organization, which is not D9, right?
01:15:28 --> 01:15:32 And I regret it, right? And I regret it because, like I said,
01:15:32 --> 01:15:37 I allow my religion or my faith, I should say, to influence me.
01:15:37 --> 01:15:42 And I remember saying to my pastor at the time, said, well, what should I do?
01:15:43 --> 01:15:47 He said, I tell you what, you stop paying them dues, they'll drop you quicker than you drop them.
01:15:48 --> 01:15:55 Right. So this whole public denouncement thing, to me, cut it out, man, it's for the birds.
01:15:56 --> 01:16:02 Just go on about your life. Right. Just live, if you don't want to be associated, you're okay.
01:16:02 --> 01:16:06 You can write a letter if you want to say, hey, remove me from the roles.
01:16:06 --> 01:16:08 But the public stuff, come on, man.
01:16:09 --> 01:16:12 I don't think it does anybody any good. It definitely does you.
01:16:12 --> 01:16:16 It doesn't do you any good, in my opinion, because all people are going to do
01:16:16 --> 01:16:17 is, why are you doing this?
01:16:17 --> 01:16:20 Why are you, you know, what's the purpose of this?
01:16:20 --> 01:16:22 But that's just my take, my two cents.
01:16:23 --> 01:16:24 Got you. Frank, what about you?
01:16:26 --> 01:16:32 Is Spike still there? Yeah, I'm still here. I had to put myself on mute for the moment.
01:16:35 --> 01:16:41 So, first of all, to quote my father exactly, what he would say is,
01:16:41 --> 01:16:42 ain't nothing new under the sun.
01:16:43 --> 01:16:46 Right? So this has been going on a long time.
01:16:47 --> 01:16:53 I've seen brothers come. I've seen brothers go. I think we hear it more now,
01:16:54 --> 01:17:00 obviously, because we've addressed this earlier with the advent of social media.
01:17:00 --> 01:17:07 Now people have a platform that sometimes they just don't know what to do with
01:17:07 --> 01:17:13 themselves with regards to utilizing and putting something on this platform.
01:17:14 --> 01:17:20 With regards to folks who decide to denounce, that's fine. As a matter of fact,
01:17:20 --> 01:17:21 I'll give you an example.
01:17:23 --> 01:17:30 There's a young brother that was a part of his process, and I had heard over
01:17:30 --> 01:17:33 the years that he had denounced.
01:17:33 --> 01:17:37 I had an opportunity. I was out of town over the summer on vacation,
01:17:38 --> 01:17:41 ran into him and his family.
01:17:41 --> 01:17:45 I was very happy to see him, and he didn't quite remember me,
01:17:45 --> 01:17:51 but as we talked through it, he shared with me that, you know,
01:17:51 --> 01:17:53 he had put that behind him.
01:17:54 --> 01:17:59 And I said, hey, I said, that's cool. I love you anyway. You know,
01:17:59 --> 01:18:01 I still see you as a good brother.
01:18:01 --> 01:18:06 And so, like I said, I've seen people leave and come back, right?
01:18:07 --> 01:18:09 You know, it's a situation where.
01:18:10 --> 01:18:19 I think that the people who do that potentially did it for all the wrong reasons,
01:18:20 --> 01:18:28 one, or two, maybe they experienced something that either, you know,
01:18:28 --> 01:18:34 in an organization or in life or whatever, and they just start shedding anything
01:18:34 --> 01:18:37 that would take them away from,
01:18:38 --> 01:18:43 let's say they had a spiritual revelation or they've experienced a true blessing
01:18:43 --> 01:18:48 or a true miracle, and anything that would get in the way of that,
01:18:48 --> 01:18:51 they need to be done with it.
01:18:52 --> 01:18:54 And perhaps that's a part of that.
01:18:54 --> 01:18:58 The other piece of it is it could potentially be,
01:18:59 --> 01:19:05 you know that person has like is a zealot or has that addictive personality
01:19:05 --> 01:19:10 that no matter what they get into they're going to do it a hundred percent and
01:19:10 --> 01:19:13 no matter what they decide not to get into they're going to do that.
01:19:14 --> 01:19:18 100%. So it's their choice.
01:19:19 --> 01:19:25 I believe everybody can make their own decisions,
01:19:25 --> 01:19:33 and I really don't try to dig too deeply with folks, because if that's their
01:19:33 --> 01:19:35 choice, I'm not trying to talk to them.
01:19:36 --> 01:19:43 What I don't like is when they basically say the rest of us are going to hell
01:19:43 --> 01:19:49 because we're, you know, like worshiping pagan gods and this, that, and the other.
01:19:50 --> 01:19:56 You know, I've got my own personal relationship with God, and,
01:19:56 --> 01:20:01 you know, I don't try to push that on anybody else.
01:20:01 --> 01:20:05 You know, if someone asks me a question about religion, we'll talk about religion.
01:20:05 --> 01:20:10 If they ask me a question about my fraternity or my life, we'll talk about that.
01:20:10 --> 01:20:16 But I just think it's people who, you know, are those folks that go all in,
01:20:16 --> 01:20:18 you know, one way or the other.
01:20:19 --> 01:20:25 And, you know, that's a choice that they make. I've seen people go as far as
01:20:25 --> 01:20:32 to, you know, denounce, to send in the letter and all that, and then wish they hadn't.
01:20:33 --> 01:20:36 Right. So, you know, it goes both ways.
01:20:37 --> 01:20:42 Gotcha. Understood. Now, Dave, for someone who is not D9 directly affiliated,
01:20:43 --> 01:20:48 you know, when you when you see or have seen people denounce.
01:20:48 --> 01:20:53 In fact, before I do that, Naboo and Frank, have you seen a movie called Imitation of Life?
01:20:53 --> 01:20:55 Yeah. Yes. I've seen it.
01:20:56 --> 01:20:59 Naboo, have you seen it? Yeah. Yeah. OK. OK.
01:21:01 --> 01:21:05 I cry every time I see. Hold on, now.
01:21:06 --> 01:21:09 Hey, Frank, bro, please stop there because I'm never going to hear the end of
01:21:09 --> 01:21:11 Dave's mouth now. All right, Dave.
01:21:12 --> 01:21:16 Let's get there. He's coming up at PHL back in the day.
01:21:17 --> 01:21:23 So, Dave, as someone who's not directly D9 affiliated, what impression,
01:21:23 --> 01:21:29 does it kind of taint your views of fraternities and sorority when you see people denounce?
01:21:29 --> 01:21:32 On social media, or do you just kind of take it as, you know,
01:21:33 --> 01:21:34 that just being their experience?
01:21:35 --> 01:21:38 The way I look at it is this. I mean, you know,
01:21:39 --> 01:21:44 any organization you become a part of, whether it's D9, whether it's sports,
01:21:45 --> 01:21:51 whether it's, you know, some community-type organization, I'm a president of a union.
01:21:51 --> 01:21:57 I mean, you know, so I understand, you know, when it comes to having those type
01:21:57 --> 01:22:02 of groups and the pressure that comes along with being a part of those groups with,
01:22:03 --> 01:22:08 you know, for those that have pressure as far as being a part of those groups and so forth.
01:22:08 --> 01:22:11 And then, of course, the way that people look at you, because,
01:22:11 --> 01:22:14 you know, sometimes you get the, oh, they think they're better than,
01:22:14 --> 01:22:19 or they think that they got everything going on, or they don't want to talk
01:22:19 --> 01:22:21 to us because they're part of, they only talk to their own.
01:22:22 --> 01:22:26 That type of stuff goes on all the time. what I'm thinking is we're you know
01:22:26 --> 01:22:28 and I know people that have denounced.
01:22:30 --> 01:22:34 I know a couple of guys very well that were capitalists that are no longer capitalists
01:22:34 --> 01:22:37 because they chose their faith over that.
01:22:38 --> 01:22:43 And I know people who were in organizations because they couldn't afford it
01:22:43 --> 01:22:48 anymore, you know, and they, and they, that was their reason for leaving the
01:22:48 --> 01:22:53 organizations because they couldn't afford the fees and so forth anymore.
01:22:53 --> 01:22:59 So when I look at those types of situations or whatever, I understand that some,
01:22:59 --> 01:23:01 you know, things aren't for everybody.
01:23:02 --> 01:23:06 You know, certain things aren't for everybody. You have to, when you go into
01:23:06 --> 01:23:12 a situation, you have to be sure as to whether or not this is for you.
01:23:13 --> 01:23:17 Like you guys have been saying this whole time, do your research.
01:23:17 --> 01:23:22 You know, make sure if you're going to commit that you're committed.
01:23:22 --> 01:23:27 You know, now, of course, things happen. You know, there are some situations
01:23:27 --> 01:23:34 that can come about that can change or, you know, you may not lead the organization,
01:23:34 --> 01:23:36 but you might become, you know,
01:23:37 --> 01:23:39 less active or whatever the case may be.
01:23:39 --> 01:23:43 But even still, you got to do your research.
01:23:43 --> 01:23:45 You got to understand everything you're getting yourself into,
01:23:45 --> 01:23:48 you know. And that's just the way I look at it.
01:23:49 --> 01:23:54 And, you know, denouncing, you know, I've seen a couple pastors do this.
01:23:55 --> 01:23:58 There was somebody else other than this Reverend Hart.
01:23:59 --> 01:24:02 There was somebody else recently that also did it. And then I don't know if
01:24:02 --> 01:24:06 you guys saw the whole thing that was going on with Ricky Smiley and his organization,
01:24:06 --> 01:24:10 you know, and how upset he was with his organization.
01:24:10 --> 01:24:14 And he was talking about, you know, he was talking about leaving his organization
01:24:14 --> 01:24:18 because of the way he was being treated by some of them, you know.
01:24:18 --> 01:24:25 So it happens, you know, and, you know, you definitely have to understand what
01:24:25 --> 01:24:30 you're getting yourself into, the commitment that it takes to be a part of it,
01:24:30 --> 01:24:33 and the understanding. That's the way I look at it.
01:24:33 --> 01:24:37 So, okay. Yeah, I agree.
01:24:38 --> 01:24:41 You know, one of the things I always think, too, is and I mean,
01:24:41 --> 01:24:45 I feel like kind of like I think Frank was saying we live in the age of social
01:24:45 --> 01:24:50 media where, you know, everybody has to announce what they do.
01:24:50 --> 01:24:53 You know, at the end of the day, OK, if you want to leave, just leave,
01:24:53 --> 01:24:58 you know, but you don't have to make a public, you know, have a thesis regarding why you're leaving.
01:24:59 --> 01:25:03 Just leave. You know, I also think about and I just, you know,
01:25:04 --> 01:25:06 my mom, she used to go to church every Sunday.
01:25:06 --> 01:25:10 And one day, you know, somebody says something to her that she didn't like.
01:25:10 --> 01:25:12 And after that, we ain't go to church no more.
01:25:13 --> 01:25:17 So, you know, I mean, kind of like Dave said, you know, I think it happens in
01:25:17 --> 01:25:20 every organization where, you know, I always feel at the end of the day,
01:25:20 --> 01:25:22 you can't please everybody.
01:25:22 --> 01:25:28 You know, every organization is not going to please every single member 100 percent of the time.
01:25:29 --> 01:25:33 And kind of like Naboo said, if you're not there for the right reasons,
01:25:33 --> 01:25:36 once you're unpleased at one time, you're ready to go.
01:25:37 --> 01:25:40 Yeah, that's it. That's it. So.
01:25:40 --> 01:25:43 All right, folks. And that's something for you guys to think about.
01:25:44 --> 01:25:50 And you guys give us your feedback as far as what you think about that or anything
01:25:50 --> 01:25:52 else that you've heard on the show tonight.
01:25:53 --> 01:25:56 That brings us to our very last thing, which is Leonard's favorite part of the
01:25:56 --> 01:25:58 show, which is called Dave's Corner.
01:25:59 --> 01:26:02 Get that guy's Leonard's favorite part of the show called Dave's Corner.
01:26:04 --> 01:26:08 Hey, nobody laughed. Nobody laughed.
01:26:09 --> 01:26:13 Anyway, it is his favorite part of the show. So this is where we usually have,
01:26:13 --> 01:26:18 you know, usually fun questions, sometimes philosophical or whatever the case might be.
01:26:18 --> 01:26:21 But I thought we'd do a little game since I got you guys on tonight.
01:26:21 --> 01:26:24 And I want to see how good you are in this game.
01:26:25 --> 01:26:33 So this game is called, Can You Guess What Divine Nine Organization This Person Is A Member Of? Okay.
01:26:34 --> 01:26:37 Now, these are all people that you guys should know.
01:26:39 --> 01:26:43 And I'm going to keep scoring to see who wins this, by the way.
01:26:45 --> 01:26:52 Okay. so just to see how see if you guys can see how good you guys are so what
01:26:52 --> 01:26:53 I'm going to do is I'm going to throw out a name,
01:26:54 --> 01:26:59 And all these people are definitely tied to a divine nine, okay?
01:26:59 --> 01:27:05 All right? So I'm going to throw out a name, and I'll see if any of you guys
01:27:05 --> 01:27:09 guess which one they're a part of, okay?
01:27:09 --> 01:27:12 And I'll write down. I'll keep score as we go along.
01:27:13 --> 01:27:19 Okay. Keisha Knight-Polium. Little Rudy from The Cosby Show. I'm about to say Delta.
01:27:20 --> 01:27:24 She's a Delta. Delta from... Uh-oh.
01:27:25 --> 01:27:32 Bonus points for Frank. Frank has bonus points. So everybody agreeing on Delta?
01:27:32 --> 01:27:35 I mean, yeah, everybody. Okay, all right.
01:27:36 --> 01:27:40 And Frank is right. Spelman is correct. Oh, wow. Okay.
01:27:40 --> 01:27:45 All right. So everybody got a point for that one. Okay. All right, cool. Hold on, Dave.
01:27:46 --> 01:27:50 Frank needs two points if he gets an organization. Oh, wait. I'm not.
01:27:50 --> 01:27:56 Okay. No, no, no, no. Because we know people get ready to fall all sooner or later. So, okay.
01:27:56 --> 01:27:59 All right. The next one, Alicia Keys.
01:28:00 --> 01:28:05 I know she's a honorary, right? Yeah, that just happened. Isn't she AKA?
01:28:07 --> 01:28:10 I'll say she honoraries AK. That's my name. Yeah, definitely honoraries.
01:28:10 --> 01:28:14 No, y'all think y'all smart, man. Y'all think y'all smart. Okay.
01:28:14 --> 01:28:18 I'm going to tell you, Dave, though, honestly, we keep up with this because,
01:28:18 --> 01:28:22 you know, D9 organizations, when they make famous people members,
01:28:23 --> 01:28:27 especially when they do honorary, they post it all over.
01:28:28 --> 01:28:32 I see it, too. I see it, too. But, you know, you can't make a bold statement
01:28:32 --> 01:28:35 like that while we're in the middle of the game. You know that.
01:28:38 --> 01:28:45 Because now you got to be right from this point for everybody there you go so
01:28:45 --> 01:28:48 now y'all going to hear you're going to hear Naboo in the background go.
01:28:51 --> 01:28:57 Because he's going to wait y'all to answer from now on okay here we go next

01:34:51 --> 01:34:57 And used to be on the Young and the Restless and so forth. I got a new clue.
01:34:57 --> 01:34:59 I think I'm going to go with S.G. Rowe on that one.
01:35:01 --> 01:35:04 What do you think? You know who Victoria Rowell is, Leonard?
01:35:05 --> 01:35:08 I have no idea, but I'm going to say Delta. I'm just going to spread the pot.

01:35:45 --> 01:35:49 Arthur S. You know what? They don't have it on here.
01:35:50 --> 01:35:53 Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a Capper. You know what? You know what?

01:35:56 --> 01:35:58 Okay. All right, so.
01:35:59 --> 01:36:05 All right, so Naboo is ahead by two points right now with a couple to go. Kelly Price.
01:36:06 --> 01:36:10 Or Kelly Price. Yeah. Yeah, I'll go A.K.A.
01:36:11 --> 01:36:15 See, part of me wants to say S.G. Rowe for her, but she might be a Zeta.
01:36:15 --> 01:36:18 Don't I say Zeta? I'm going to say A.K.A.
01:36:19 --> 01:36:24 So we got two Zetas and one A.K.A.

01:37:41 --> 01:37:47 They kind of don't have a set look and everything. I mean, am I wrong?
01:37:48 --> 01:37:54 No, nobody has a look. No, no, no. You guys do.
01:37:55 --> 01:38:01 You guys do. I believe that about you guys and the AKs.
01:38:02 --> 01:38:09 Out of all the Divine Nines, I think your two groups are the most easy to recognize.
01:38:10 --> 01:38:14 Personally, I think that. That's a good thing. It's not a bad thing.
01:38:14 --> 01:38:16 I'm just saying. I'm just saying. That's the way I feel.
01:38:17 --> 01:38:20 Especially when I was in school, it was real easy to figure it out.
01:38:23 --> 01:38:28 You walk around with book bags and whatnot. Yeah. Yeah, and everybody was smart.
01:38:29 --> 01:38:30 You know, that type of thing.
01:38:30 --> 01:38:33 Now, when Leonard was in school, that's a whole different story.
01:38:34 --> 01:38:39 Let me see. Of course, Cedric the Entertainer. Yeah.
01:38:41 --> 01:38:42 Okay. Lena Horne.
01:38:44 --> 01:38:49 A.K.A. Or, ah, was she a Delta? I don't know A.K.A.
01:38:49 --> 01:38:55 Ah. I would say A.K.A. That's my first choice. A.K.A. is first choice. Ditto.

01:39:20 --> 01:39:27 Michael Jordan. Omega Psi Phi. Omega Psi Phi. Plus Grad Chapter in Charlotte.
01:39:28 --> 01:39:33 Okay. All right. Well, that's all I got there.
01:39:33 --> 01:39:36 You guys did pretty well. Naboo got the most right.

01:39:41 --> 01:39:44 All right. But I just wanted to test you guys. You guys are pretty good,
01:39:44 --> 01:39:46 though. Y'all guys are right on point with most of it.
