Nurses Declassified? Student Loan Shake-Up Sparks Outrage

Nurses Declassified? Student Loan Shake-Up Sparks Outrage

Hosts Dave and Leonard celebrate their anniversary and cover major stories: the Education Department's plan to exclude nursing from professional degree status and new loan caps, a young UK hairstylist repeatedly dismissed until diagnosed with stage 4 angiosarcoma, rising GOP dissatisfaction over Trump and "America First," and Lupita Nyong'o's account of postโ€‘Oscar typecasting.

The episode blends politics, healthcare, culture, and personal updates with listener interaction in "Dave's Corner," plus Thanksgiving messages and calls for community action.

00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 What's going on, Mr. Leonard Young? What's happening?
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 Hey, Dave. Everything is good. This is Leonard Young, CEO of National Black
00:01:42 --> 00:01:48 Guide, DelawareBlack.com, Black media specialist, all-around good guy.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:53 How goes it, Dave? man I can't call it it's a rainy Tuesday night.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:59 And what can we say? A couple of days after the Eagles lose to the Cowboys,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 what a horrible feeling, you know, when we lose to the Cowboys.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:10 But we're still here, man. We're still here, you know, live in effect. What can we say?
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 Yeah, yeah. Y'all ain't die.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:19 Nah. Nah. Well, you know, when the Eagles lose to the Cowboys,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:24 there's a lot of us feel like we died. I mean, I was watching a video clip,
00:02:24 --> 00:02:28 Gilly, you know, Gilly and Wallow.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:33 They were just sitting there staring at the TV. You know, you could tell Gilly
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 was about to explode, man. He was so mad, you know.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 So, you know, people, you know, people, people, this is a way of life for some
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 people, man, especially that game, you know.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:47 So, and right now the Eagles don't look like they're playing as well as they
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 did last year. Hopefully they'll get themselves together.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:55 Because, you know, playoffs will be coming soon. And, you know,
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 we don't want them going out like frauds. You know what I mean?
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 So, you know, so let's go birds. They play this Friday against Chicago.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 Let's see what happens. So.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:09 Everything all right with you yeah everything's good
00:03:09 --> 00:03:13 just this uh shortened week is already messing up my timeline all day today
00:03:13 --> 00:03:19 i'll swear i mean minus the podcast i was swearing today was wednesday so i
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 was trying to do all my wednesday stuff so when i found out today was actually
00:03:22 --> 00:03:27 tuesday kind of felt a little relieved gave me an extra day to get some stuff done,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 It did seem like, you know what, I kind of concur with you.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 It did seem like it was a Wednesday. It did seem that way.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 I guess everybody's rushing to get the week over with because a lot of people
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 are off on Thursday and Friday.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:48 So, you know, and I know with the state of Delaware, we're off on Thursday and Friday.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:55 So, you know, so Wednesday is our Friday this week. So we're looking to hurry
00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 up and get through that day. so I have a,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 The only thing is, I got, man, so I got so much work to do.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:09 This whole thing with the lockout and all of that stuff has really created a
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 lot of work for us. And you know what I mean?
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 So especially when it comes to the SNAP benefits and all of that stuff.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 So it's been kind of interesting. And, you know, now we're trying to play catch
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 up on everything. So that's where we are now.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:30 Gotcha. Okay. Sounds fun. Yeah. Yeah. What can we say? What can we say?
00:04:31 --> 00:04:38 Do you have any plans for the holiday? Going to visit some of Yolanda's family. So that's about it.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 I'm so happy about it. Okay. Yeah. Well, no, no, it's not that.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 It's just, you know, the years flying by.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 Have you ever looked at stuff and like, you just know you're not getting done.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 Like every day there's stuff that's still on your plate.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 You know, it's like even today, you know, I'm tired, but I'm trying to think,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 okay, Like, what do I need to do for tomorrow?
00:04:58 --> 00:05:03 Okay, what do we need to do Thursday, Friday, Saturday? So that's it.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 Yeah, well, I get it. Like I said, man.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:12 And, you know, my thing is all the work I got to get done at work.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 And, you know, but we'll see. We'll see what happens. I mean,
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 look, it ain't going nowhere. It'll be there.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:24 You know, so I'll go in on Saturday and get some of it done.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:29 So Saturday is a good day to work for us because we're not being bothered by
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 anybody and we can get a lot of stuff done on Saturday.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:35 So, but we'll see. We'll see what happens.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 All right. Well,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:43 Let me say this. We let this kind of slip by us again.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:52 And just wanted to make sure to say happy anniversary to News and Trends with Dave and Lynn.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:58 Our anniversary month was this month. And since there's a lot of people celebrating
00:05:58 --> 00:06:02 anniversaries, like all the, you know, between now and next month,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:08 all the frats and the sororities are, you know, celebrating their anniversaries and so forth.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:12 But we actually celebrated our anniversary this year.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:18 We got through a full four years and just started our fifth year.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:24 And I just want to say to everyone out there, thank you for taking the time to listen to the show.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:29 For those of you who always gives us, you know, feedback and so forth.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:34 And for those of you who have been with us from day one, we really appreciate you guys.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 And, you know, thank you for keeping us encouraged to do this show.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:45 You know, it's kind of a, you know, Leonard and I try to bring things to you
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 that a lot of people, you know, don't always talk about and so forth.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 And, you know, of course, you know, we have some of our favorite things to talk
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 about on a regular basis. We can't seem to get away from them, you know.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 So, but thank you. I know I want to say thank you.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:05 And I'm sure Leonard wants to say thank you as well in reference to the years.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:09 Thank you to my partner for putting
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 up with me all this time and me having to put up with you and
00:07:12 --> 00:07:16 you know here's to another year doing
00:07:16 --> 00:07:19 doing this podcast okay well
00:07:19 --> 00:07:25 well said dave i couldn't have said any better myself if i said it on two lips
00:07:25 --> 00:07:31 yeah there you go that's my part of people that's what he does okay all right
00:07:31 --> 00:07:36 so i guess with that being said we got a few things to talk to you about today.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:44 This first story, you know, I know for those who've been listening to the show
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 for a long time, people might've heard me mention that I was,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 I used to teach in the healthcare field.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:53 So the story was a little personal for me. And then I know quite a few nurses and so forth.
00:07:54 --> 00:08:01 And I don't know if you guys have been listening that Trump wants to declassify nurses.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:07 So there was a story that I wanted to kind of read from a little bit.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:14 It says the Trump administration excludes nursing teaching from professional
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 degree lists. And here's why.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:23 He said, there's a coalition of nursing and other healthcare organizations that
00:08:23 --> 00:08:29 are angry over Trump's administration plan that could limit access to student loans in some cases.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 Students pursuing graduate degrees in nursing, physical therapy,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:41 public health, and some other fields would face tighter federal student loan
00:08:41 --> 00:08:48 limits under the plan because it doesn't consider them professional degrees.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:54 Now, I got to stop right there. If nursing is not a professional degree.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 That's crazy. All right. Okay.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:02 That's all I got to say. It says, the revamp is a part of the Trump's big,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:10 beautiful bill, the BBB, while graduate students could previously borrow loans up to.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:16 To the cost of their degree, the new rules would set caps depending on whether
00:09:16 --> 00:09:20 the degree is considered a graduate or a professional program.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:25 The education department is defining the following fields as professional programs.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:30 Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinarian Medicine,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:39 Chiropractic, Law, Medicine, Optometry, Osteopathic Medicine,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 Podiatry, and Theology.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:50 That's an interesting group. It is. But nursing is not considered to be a professional degree.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:56 Okay. Okay, left out on nursing, physical therapy, dental hygiene,
00:09:57 --> 00:10:03 occupational therapy, and social work, as well as fields outside of the health
00:10:03 --> 00:10:10 care, such as architecture and education, along with accounting. What in the world?
00:10:11 --> 00:10:16 Now, those are some of the hardest degrees to get. I know, they are.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 He don't care.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:27 It said, while the plan is being finalized, the new student loan caps would take effect next July.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 Now, it says, why is this happening?
00:10:30 --> 00:10:35 The Trump administration says limits on graduate loans are needed to reduce tuition costs.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:41 It believes that capping students' loans would push universities charging higher
00:10:41 --> 00:10:45 than average tuition to look at lowering their rates.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:55 Now, another reason that Trump wants to do this and this type of thing is because
00:10:55 --> 00:10:59 of the nursing scandal that happened in Florida.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:02 And you and I talked about this nursing scandal.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:08 And all these fake degrees that were given out, there's been a lot of issues
00:11:08 --> 00:11:12 with a lot of these nurses who have worked in hospitals and doctor's offices
00:11:12 --> 00:11:15 and so forth, who really don't have the real,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:22 education, and know-how to be able to do these jobs. And that's causing a lot of issues.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 There's been a lot of malpractice suits and so forth. You know,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:31 now, and it also has come out that a lot of these fake degrees that these people
00:11:31 --> 00:11:36 paid for were Black nurses. So here we go again.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:41 Now, this story has given us the professional look.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:44 It says, what does this mean for students? Some future students can find it
00:11:44 --> 00:11:48 more costly or difficult to pursue a specialized degree.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:53 Under the new plan, students in professional programs would be able to borrow
00:11:53 --> 00:11:57 anywhere from $50 a year up to $200 in total.
00:11:58 --> 00:12:02 Other graduate students, such as those pursuing nursing and physical therapy,
00:12:03 --> 00:12:09 would be limited to $20 a year and up to $100.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:15 That's half, just, well, less than half, really, if you look at it.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:19 The Trump administration is saying that the impact will be minimal.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:24 Health groups say change will worsen the nursing shortage. Now,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:27 we know there's a nursing shortage all over right now.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:32 You go in these hospitals, you know, you got one nurse taking care of like 10
00:12:32 --> 00:12:36 to 20 people, You know, at one time, because these hospitals,
00:12:36 --> 00:12:42 because of COVID, because of flu and all the other illnesses and whatever, are still full.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 I mean, we still have full hospitals.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:50 And you got one nurse that's kind of running around taking care of a bunch of people.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:56 Because they can't, you know, they're having a hard time filling the nurses
00:12:56 --> 00:13:03 or being able to come up with the people that have the right.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:11 Education, also know-how, because a lot of these hospitals want people that
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 they don't have to train.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:17 They want them to come right in and be able to do the job. But unfortunately,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 that's not what's happening.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:25 And it's really a shame. And we have to deal with what they've been dealing with.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:29 But with all that this has been said, and I've talked to a couple of my friends
00:13:29 --> 00:13:34 that are nurses, and they're really upset about it because it's making them look bad.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:40 You know, and they're trying to say that they definitely are not qualified to
00:13:40 --> 00:13:43 have these jobs. What do you think about all of this?
00:13:43 --> 00:13:50 I mean, I think it's just crazy. You know, all of the professions that he said
00:13:50 --> 00:13:53 seem professional to me, you know.
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 No, Dave, I'm not going to lie. The theology, you know, like.
00:13:57 --> 00:14:01 Oh, don't talk about theology, man. You're going to get some people jumping on your hands.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:08 I know, but I understand. But, you know, in my mind, that that would be the
00:14:08 --> 00:14:11 one that would be most in line with what he said.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:15 And I get it. I get it. Blame it on my ignorance.
00:14:16 --> 00:14:22 Text Dave to voice all you. But yeah, I mean, I just think it's crazy because I know.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:27 And, you know, when I was in school, Dave, you know, them nursing students be working hard.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:32 And the classes, the entry-level classes they take are some of the same classes
00:14:32 --> 00:14:37 that, you know, doctors are taking, medical students, people in the medical
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 field. You know, they're all kind of related.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:46 I heard one thing saying that, and Dave, can you read all the degree fields again?
00:14:46 --> 00:14:48 Yeah, okay. That's no problem.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:52 So he said, okay, these are the ones.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:58 That he defines as professional programs. Pharmacy, dentistry,
00:14:59 --> 00:15:07 veterinarian medicine, chiropractic, then law, medicine, optometry,
00:15:08 --> 00:15:12 osteopathic medicine, podiatry, and theology.
00:15:12 --> 00:15:16 These are the ones that he deems as professional programs.
00:15:17 --> 00:15:20 What he doesn't deem as professional programs are these.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:29 Nursing physical therapy dental hygiene occupational therapy and social work
00:15:29 --> 00:15:34 and then he said as well as fields outside of healthcare such as architecture and.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:41 Education, and accounting. Okay, yeah, dude. I just think that's crazy. Accounting?
00:15:41 --> 00:15:44 Come on, you can't tell me accounting is not a real degree. Yeah,
00:15:44 --> 00:15:47 I know. Them classes are hard. Yeah.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:51 Because, you know, at first, and I want you to reread it because I was trying
00:15:51 --> 00:15:55 to think in my head about what's the makeup of men and women.
00:15:55 --> 00:15:59 Like, is this a woman thing? Is this a black woman thing? But when you reread
00:15:59 --> 00:16:02 it, it doesn't make a damn bit of sense to me.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:05 No, it doesn't. Because that touches everybody. Yeah. Yeah, no,
00:16:06 --> 00:16:10 it definitely touches everybody. So, I mean, you know, I think it's crazy.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:17 I just feel like whatever he does in, what, two more years, three more years,
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 it's going to change back.
00:16:19 --> 00:16:23 You know, once that next president get in, you know, it's going to change.
00:16:24 --> 00:16:28 You know, he's already trying to bully his way into a third term.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 I know. I mean, I don't think the people would let it happen.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:37 Yeah all right and we didn't think we didn't think
00:16:37 --> 00:16:40 he would get back in office either but he did yeah i
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 i hear you yeah so i mean
00:16:43 --> 00:16:47 i'm sure those i'm sure those voting machines are already not working already
00:16:47 --> 00:16:55 you know yeah i'm sure yeah so but this is this is a mess and especially when
00:16:55 --> 00:16:59 you hear these these programs and everything that but you know this all goes
00:16:59 --> 00:17:03 back to the whole thing with the Department of Education because he wants to get rid of that as well.
00:17:04 --> 00:17:06 And, you know...
00:17:07 --> 00:17:11 I don't know how, see, people don't understand. You and I were talking about
00:17:11 --> 00:17:17 this well over a year ago when we were telling people they need to get out and vote.
00:17:18 --> 00:17:23 And, you know, we were talking about the lines and people, like.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 Where people were voting.
00:17:24 --> 00:17:27 Like, I told you, my building, them lines were long in my building.
00:17:27 --> 00:17:33 You know, when it came to the early voting and early registration and everything.
00:17:33 --> 00:17:37 And then but in Wilmington where
00:17:37 --> 00:17:40 there were a couple polling places you can go into
00:17:40 --> 00:17:43 you can walk right into the places you know because
00:17:43 --> 00:17:46 you know and and you know people just
00:17:46 --> 00:17:49 wasn't taking it as serious enough not when
00:17:49 --> 00:17:52 but like when Biden was put in
00:17:52 --> 00:17:55 office you know that was a big turnout that when
00:17:55 --> 00:17:59 Biden was elected but I don't
00:17:59 --> 00:18:02 know people just wasn't feeling Kamala but Kamala was trying
00:18:02 --> 00:18:05 to tell everybody she was trying to tell you everybody was
00:18:05 --> 00:18:08 trying to tell you about this big beautiful bill and and
00:18:08 --> 00:18:12 nobody was listening basically everything that
00:18:12 --> 00:18:15 has been laid out as far as that bill is concerned
00:18:15 --> 00:18:19 he he's putting in the effect now
00:18:19 --> 00:18:22 whether he's getting away with it or not we'll see what happens but
00:18:22 --> 00:18:25 you know but he always seems to get
00:18:25 --> 00:18:28 it out there before congress says hey you can't do that
00:18:28 --> 00:18:31 i don't understand how that happens either but
00:18:31 --> 00:18:34 that's a whole nother story so but folks
00:18:34 --> 00:18:37 pay attention if you have loved ones if you have
00:18:37 --> 00:18:42 if you have friends and family that are nurses and some of these other fields
00:18:42 --> 00:18:48 that he's trying to declassify you know you know you guys need to talk to your
00:18:48 --> 00:18:54 congressman you need to talk to your senate people you know and let's go so we'll see what happens.
00:18:56 --> 00:18:59 All right, we're going to move on to our next story. Let's see.
00:18:59 --> 00:19:02 I thought this was an interesting story as well.
00:19:02 --> 00:19:06 It goes, her pain was dismissed four times.
00:19:07 --> 00:19:11 A lie finally got doctors to discover her stage four cancer.
00:19:12 --> 00:19:21 Now, we all have heard stories about how cancer can lie underneath and so forth and so forth.
00:19:21 --> 00:19:24 And then when it's finally discovered, you find out it's stage four.
00:19:24 --> 00:19:26 And you'd be saying, how can that happen?
00:19:26 --> 00:19:32 I go to the doctor, you know, I do this, I do that. And how can they not know about this?
00:19:32 --> 00:19:36 So this story was pretty interesting, okay?
00:19:36 --> 00:19:44 And it's about a young lady. Her name is Nothando Nilesio, a 22-year-old hairstylist
00:19:44 --> 00:19:48 from Leicester, England, okay?
00:19:49 --> 00:19:54 It says a young black woman in the UK said she was dismissed by doctors four
00:19:54 --> 00:20:00 separate times before being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and only after she
00:20:00 --> 00:20:02 lied to get the test she needed.
00:20:03 --> 00:20:07 She says she's a 22-year-old hairstylist from Leicester, England,
00:20:07 --> 00:20:13 and is now speaking out and urging others to advocate fiercely for their health
00:20:13 --> 00:20:19 after she repeated attempts to seek care and was brushed off.
00:20:21 --> 00:20:30 Ultimately delaying a diagnosis of stage 4 angiosarcoma, a rare aggressive cancer
00:20:30 --> 00:20:35 that forms in the lining of blood or lymph vessels.
00:20:35 --> 00:20:40 My whole thing is to raise awareness for this. Now, keep in mind,
00:20:40 --> 00:20:42 she's only 22 years old, folks, okay?
00:20:42 --> 00:20:48 For young people, for old people, for everyone to know that sarcoma is very
00:20:48 --> 00:20:51 dangerous, and it creeps upon you.
00:20:51 --> 00:20:56 It sometimes has no symptoms. You cannot feel anything until it's too late,
00:20:57 --> 00:20:59 which is what happened to me, she said.
00:21:00 --> 00:21:04 I spent a whole year fine, and then towards the end of the year,
00:21:04 --> 00:21:07 I start to have this crippling chronic back pain.
00:21:08 --> 00:21:13 And the next thing I know, doctors are telling me that there's nothing that they can do about it.
00:21:13 --> 00:21:21 It's at stage four, which is so scary to think about because it's like you have
00:21:21 --> 00:21:28 your whole life and suddenly it comes to a pause because something that came out of nowhere.
00:21:29 --> 00:21:30 In an interview with the son.
00:21:33 --> 00:21:38 The 20-something-year-old shared that her back pain first began in November
00:21:38 --> 00:21:44 2024 and despite returning to the doctor several more times through December
00:21:44 --> 00:21:47 2024 and January 2025, 25,
00:21:47 --> 00:21:51 she was repeatedly dismissed with nothing but pain medication.
00:21:52 --> 00:21:57 As the pain grew unbearable, she finally hatched the ideal to tell a small white
00:21:57 --> 00:22:04 lie, saying that she had fallen down the stairs, and that's when doctors finally
00:22:04 --> 00:22:06 ordered the proper scans.
00:22:07 --> 00:22:11 Imaging, I'm sorry, imagine in January 2025,
00:22:12 --> 00:22:19 no, imaging, I'm sorry, in January 2025, you feel multiple lesions in her spine
00:22:19 --> 00:22:24 and pelvis, along with a tumor on her left adrenal gland.
00:22:25 --> 00:22:32 And after additional testing, her medical team confirmed she had stage 4 angiosarcoma.
00:22:33 --> 00:22:37 She said that because the disease was centered in her spine,
00:22:38 --> 00:22:45 specialists told her there were limited treatment options and her prognosis is not favorable.
00:22:46 --> 00:22:50 They didn't give me any hope. They started me on palliative care,
00:22:50 --> 00:22:56 and I thought, are they not going to at least give me some options?
00:22:56 --> 00:23:02 They did offer me some radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
00:23:03 --> 00:23:07 And I had a lot of medication for pain management, she said.
00:23:07 --> 00:23:13 But by the time they told me what it was, they already had given me the impression
00:23:13 --> 00:23:15 that they had given up on me.
00:23:16 --> 00:23:20 As she began treatment, she launched a GoFundMe to help her cover her medical
00:23:20 --> 00:23:22 needs, travel, and living expenses.
00:23:23 --> 00:23:27 Life has drastically changed in so many ways, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
00:23:28 --> 00:23:33 From being a normal 22-year-old, enjoying life, running my own business as a
00:23:33 --> 00:23:39 hairstylist, going out with friends, and traveling to having stage 4 rare cancers,
00:23:39 --> 00:23:42 she wrote on the fundraiser.
00:23:42 --> 00:23:46 Never in my wildest dream would I ever expected this.
00:23:46 --> 00:23:48 I'm going to stop right there.
00:23:49 --> 00:23:58 It's a shame that we're still having issues with treatment when it comes to black women.
00:23:58 --> 00:24:03 How many times have we done stories about this, right?
00:24:04 --> 00:24:10 Yeah. I think that this is where we are.
00:24:11 --> 00:24:16 It seems like it keeps happening on a regular basis. Because now this woman
00:24:16 --> 00:24:23 four times tried to get them to do everything they can to try to find out what
00:24:23 --> 00:24:24 this pain was that she was having.
00:24:25 --> 00:24:30 And the fact that she had to lie to get the proper scans and x-rays that she
00:24:30 --> 00:24:36 needed to have only to find out, man, you got stage four cancer,
00:24:37 --> 00:24:41 a rare cancer at that. That's crazy. You know?
00:24:42 --> 00:24:47 So what does it say? about our health care system.
00:24:47 --> 00:24:50 Now, I just got finished doing the story about the nursing.
00:24:50 --> 00:24:58 But yet, the medicine programs are still being funded, but what good is the
00:24:58 --> 00:24:59 medicine programs being funded,
00:25:00 --> 00:25:04 if you're not going to get the care or the doctors are not doing everything
00:25:04 --> 00:25:09 they can to make sure that people are properly diagnosed,
00:25:10 --> 00:25:14 especially when somebody tells you there's something wrong with them. What's your thoughts?
00:25:15 --> 00:25:22 You know i mean first um because this lady was in england right yes so you know
00:25:22 --> 00:25:27 it's first of all it's just a shame that you know black people are treated this
00:25:27 --> 00:25:28 way all around the world and,
00:25:29 --> 00:25:37 you know people of darker skin color are treated like this i mean i think that's crazy and then,
00:25:38 --> 00:25:45 the mix the misdiagnosis to me that that sounds like that'd be a lawsuit yeah definitely you know
00:25:45 --> 00:25:53 I'm not sure how you could prove it, but if there was a doctor who was not knowledgeable
00:25:53 --> 00:26:00 about reading tests or what they were advising and it caused somebody to, you know,
00:26:00 --> 00:26:04 go through different stages of cancer during that in-between time,
00:26:05 --> 00:26:07 you know, I mean, that's almost like someone...
00:26:08 --> 00:26:13 You know, purposely sabotaging your life. You know, they're robbing you of the
00:26:13 --> 00:26:20 opportunity to get better care, different opinions by feeling that they were right.
00:26:20 --> 00:26:25 Now, I mean, at any time you have the option to, you know, get second opinions, but,
00:26:26 --> 00:26:32 you know, it's always weird how I was watching this video and it was a side-by-side
00:26:32 --> 00:26:38 of like a white woman experiencing pain and what the, the,
00:26:38 --> 00:26:41 like the nurse attendant would write down.
00:26:41 --> 00:26:45 And then when a black lady was experiencing pain, you know, it was totally different.
00:26:45 --> 00:26:47 Like white, white woman experiencing pain.
00:26:47 --> 00:26:52 It was like, Oh, she's in pain, something, something black woman experiencing pain.
00:26:52 --> 00:26:55 She's being erratic, you know, she's all over the place.
00:26:56 --> 00:27:00 And it's like, okay, but you know, you didn't say that for the white lady who
00:27:00 --> 00:27:01 has experienced the same type of pain.
00:27:02 --> 00:27:07 So I think it's hard. And I definitely believe if you have a problem with your
00:27:07 --> 00:27:12 doctor, you know, you should look for a black doctor, you know?
00:27:12 --> 00:27:14 And I mean, it may not be the cure-all.
00:27:14 --> 00:27:17 You may have to, you know, go through them and find the right one for you.
00:27:18 --> 00:27:26 But it just takes away some of the stereotypes that you'll be experiencing if you go other places.
00:27:27 --> 00:27:33 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, because, I mean, you know, I told you, I think I mentioned
00:27:33 --> 00:27:37 to you about the friend of mine that her and her husband moved to Thailand a
00:27:37 --> 00:27:40 little over a year or so ago because of the health care.
00:27:40 --> 00:27:43 She was, you know, they she knew something was wrong with her,
00:27:43 --> 00:27:46 but they couldn't seem to figure it out.
00:27:46 --> 00:27:50 Finally, when they did figure it out, they tried to charge all this money to have the surgery and.
00:27:52 --> 00:27:58 $36, Leonard, for some type of surgery that she needed here in the States.
00:27:59 --> 00:28:03 And she went over to Thailand and had the same surgery with more things being
00:28:03 --> 00:28:08 done and only paid $1 in U.S. dollars. That's crazy.
00:28:09 --> 00:28:17 I know. It's really crazy. But this is, you know, we have to make sure that
00:28:17 --> 00:28:19 we're getting taken care of, folks.
00:28:20 --> 00:28:23 Nowadays especially when it comes to these cancers and
00:28:23 --> 00:28:27 you know cancer is very
00:28:27 --> 00:28:31 good at lying dormant underneath you
00:28:31 --> 00:28:35 know other things until something disturbs
00:28:35 --> 00:28:40 it and when it gets disturbed that's when it starts spreading and you know you
00:28:40 --> 00:28:46 got some issues that you know you're 22 two years old and you're being told
00:28:46 --> 00:28:51 only because you'd lie and said that, you know,
00:28:51 --> 00:28:55 you fell down some stairs and they, they finally looked at something different
00:28:55 --> 00:28:58 and then they find out what's wrong with you.
00:28:58 --> 00:29:01 And then you're being told that it's nothing they can do for you.
00:29:02 --> 00:29:07 That's, that's the craziest thing I couldn't even imagine, you know.
00:29:08 --> 00:29:11 I couldn't even imagine that, man. But anyway, I,
00:29:12 --> 00:29:17 This is where we are. We hope that this young lady gets, you know,
00:29:17 --> 00:29:23 is able to get some kind of help with maybe there's somebody out there that
00:29:23 --> 00:29:26 specializes in this type of cancer.
00:29:27 --> 00:29:30 And maybe they can figure out something to do to, you know, to,
00:29:30 --> 00:29:35 you know, help her and, you know, try to keep her, you know,
00:29:35 --> 00:29:37 going and staying alive.
00:29:38 --> 00:29:41 You know but you know definitely it's really it's really
00:29:41 --> 00:29:47 sad when you hear these kind of stories you know so all
00:29:47 --> 00:29:52 right okay what's your i think you have the next story what's going on yeah
00:29:52 --> 00:29:55 so dave so the next one is uh you know something i think is interesting kind
00:29:55 --> 00:30:01 of like i've said to you numerous times before you know i feel that trump the
00:30:01 --> 00:30:05 longer he's around the more and more people he's just going to piss off.
00:30:06 --> 00:30:12 And in the last week or so, there's been a hashtag that's been trending on Twitter.
00:30:13 --> 00:30:15 And the hashtag is America First.
00:30:16 --> 00:30:22 And a lot of the people posting these hashtags are Republicans slash MAGA supporters.
00:30:24 --> 00:30:29 And basically what they're saying is that they feel as though president Trump
00:30:29 --> 00:30:34 is not backing up his America first promise.
00:30:34 --> 00:30:40 So for instance, Dave, some of the things they're talking about is how he invited
00:30:40 --> 00:30:44 the, I don't know if you saw clips where he had the, the newly elected New York
00:30:44 --> 00:30:48 city mayor Mondani come to the white house.
00:30:48 --> 00:30:53 He was like smiling at him like a kid in a candy store, you know?
00:30:53 --> 00:30:57 And of course, you know, a lot of MAGA Republicans, you know,
00:30:57 --> 00:31:01 were very against Mondani because they felt like he's,
00:31:02 --> 00:31:04 You know how they like to call anyone who looks Middle Eastern,
00:31:04 --> 00:31:07 they like to call them terrorist and classify.
00:31:09 --> 00:31:13 So he's upset a lot of his base, you know, with that whole situation.
00:31:13 --> 00:31:19 And then I don't know if you saw where he and Marjorie Taylor Greene got into
00:31:19 --> 00:31:24 it and they were feuding. And then it looks like she tried to come back and
00:31:24 --> 00:31:27 kind of kisses, you know, kisses, but kiss up to him.
00:31:27 --> 00:31:32 And then she's stepping down from her position. And she did say that she will
00:31:32 --> 00:31:35 be retiring at the beginning of the year or stepping down from,
00:31:35 --> 00:31:37 you know, from politics.
00:31:37 --> 00:31:41 Yeah. And a lot of people. She's getting a nice little pension from that.
00:31:41 --> 00:31:48 You know, a lot of MAGA supporters were very upset about that because they considered
00:31:48 --> 00:31:53 Marjorie Taylor Greene a very strong supporter of MAGA.
00:31:53 --> 00:32:00 And the items that she disagreed over or she disagreed about with President
00:32:00 --> 00:32:06 Trump were strong MAGA items that a lot of these MAGA supporters, you know,
00:32:07 --> 00:32:10 wanted to, you know, support it or they support it.
00:32:10 --> 00:32:14 So, you know, a lot of people are just kind of upset with President Trump because,
00:32:14 --> 00:32:18 you know, they said Marjorie Taylor Greene was one of your biggest supporters
00:32:18 --> 00:32:21 for a long time. And, you know, she stands for America first.
00:32:22 --> 00:32:24 And he's arguing with her over America first issues.
00:32:25 --> 00:32:28 Then, you know, and we might have talked about it here, Dave,
00:32:28 --> 00:32:36 there were probably a couple of months ago when Qatar gave that like jumbo jet, big plane, 747.
00:32:38 --> 00:32:41 Personally to president Trump, not to America, but gave it to Trump.
00:32:42 --> 00:32:45 Yep. Yep. You know, a lot of people were complaining about that.
00:32:45 --> 00:32:47 And then I think it was Saudi Arabia.
00:32:47 --> 00:32:53 He offered them space out in the Midwest that they could, quote unquote,
00:32:53 --> 00:32:58 build a base or partner with some naval training. I mean, some Air Force training
00:32:58 --> 00:33:02 on a base here in America. So a lot of people were very upset about that.
00:33:03 --> 00:33:05 So, you know, long story short, you know, they, they,
00:33:06 --> 00:33:09 A lot of people, and I mean, you know, some of us, you know,
00:33:09 --> 00:33:12 we saw the light way back years and years ago.
00:33:12 --> 00:33:18 But there are a lot of Republicans and MAGA supporters that are throwing in
00:33:18 --> 00:33:21 the towel of their support for President Trump.
00:33:21 --> 00:33:26 You know, they say things like, you know, he's selling America,
00:33:26 --> 00:33:30 you know, and Dave, I don't know if you remember, you remember for one of those
00:33:30 --> 00:33:35 visa programs, he said, was it $5 and you can get a visa or $5 million?
00:33:36 --> 00:33:38 You know, selling America.
00:33:38 --> 00:33:45 And then last week he mentioned something about, and I forget the exact story,
00:33:45 --> 00:33:52 but he's long and short said there are no qualified workers here in America
00:33:52 --> 00:33:55 or not enough qualified workers here in America.
00:33:55 --> 00:33:57 And a lot of people got very upset.
00:33:58 --> 00:34:05 And he said, so he plans to bring in a lot of foreigners slash immigrants to
00:34:05 --> 00:34:09 kind of fill some of these, you know, probably like manufacturing blue collar
00:34:09 --> 00:34:12 jobs that we do not have enough people to fill.
00:34:13 --> 00:34:15 So, you know, he upset a lot of people there for two reasons.
00:34:15 --> 00:34:18 One, he's saying we don't have to qualify people.
00:34:19 --> 00:34:22 And he's bringing, you know, they, you know, these MAGA
00:34:22 --> 00:34:25 people don't like him bringing in all these immigrants and foreigners because
00:34:25 --> 00:34:28 I think one of the main countries that was targeting was india
00:34:28 --> 00:34:32 because you know bringing them for some of these tech jobs
00:34:32 --> 00:34:37 and all that so long story short dave a lot of people are becoming very upset
00:34:37 --> 00:34:43 about at him and they feel like he's getting a little too cozy with foreign
00:34:43 --> 00:34:49 government and their leaders and he's being overshadowed by foreign money so
00:34:49 --> 00:34:51 what's your take on all this.
00:34:52 --> 00:34:58 Well, I agree. I think he's being lured by the money outside the United States
00:34:58 --> 00:35:04 that, of course, he can basically use for himself.
00:35:04 --> 00:35:07 Because everything's about Donald Trump. We already know that.
00:35:08 --> 00:35:11 Everything's about Donald Trump, what you can do for me, and so forth.
00:35:11 --> 00:35:16 And when we look at the when we look at the things that he's done with some
00:35:16 --> 00:35:22 of these foreign leaders and you know you have somebody Qatar,
00:35:22 --> 00:35:25 you know Qatar is one of the richest places,
00:35:26 --> 00:35:32 you know, I mean that place, they balling in Qatar, I'm telling you that now
00:35:32 --> 00:35:35 so when you got somebody from Qatar giving you a whole plane,
00:35:35 --> 00:35:39 you know, and you know, they're saying hey you can use it, you know,
00:35:39 --> 00:35:43 do this and do that, you know, but You know,
00:35:43 --> 00:35:47 Trump, we know one thing about Trump. Trump is going where the money is.
00:35:47 --> 00:35:49 We already know that, you know.
00:35:49 --> 00:35:54 And whatever he can get out of it, that's what he's going to do. He's going to do that.
00:35:54 --> 00:35:57 He don't care about anything else but making himself look good.
00:35:58 --> 00:36:02 You know, the classic thing was when they were, where were they last week when
00:36:02 --> 00:36:06 the guy passed out? And Trump just kind of looked back.
00:36:07 --> 00:36:09 You know. That's crazy.
00:36:10 --> 00:36:15 And the look on his face is like, this guy's messing up my moment. You know? You know?
00:36:17 --> 00:36:19 And Trump barely said, is he all right?
00:36:20 --> 00:36:24 That's what he said. You know, is he all right? He does. But,
00:36:24 --> 00:36:28 you know, but this is all about him doing the things that he wants.
00:36:28 --> 00:36:32 You know, he done pissed off so many different people, even people in his own
00:36:32 --> 00:36:33 party, that whole thing.
00:36:34 --> 00:36:38 Whoever would have thought that him and Marjorie Taylor Greene wouldn't be on the same page. Come on.
00:36:39 --> 00:36:45 Whoever would have thought that so it's really a shame you know,
00:36:47 --> 00:36:52 When you turn on a TV each and every day, you cannot get through the day without
00:36:52 --> 00:36:55 hearing something about Donald Trump. Oh, yeah.
00:36:55 --> 00:37:05 Okay. And you can almost go to the casinos or one of the online betting services
00:37:05 --> 00:37:11 and do a prop bet on how many times you're going to hear Trump's name on TV
00:37:11 --> 00:37:14 or on social media in one day.
00:37:14 --> 00:37:18 You know because it's going to be many times now one
00:37:18 --> 00:37:21 thing he does is keep his name in the news you know
00:37:21 --> 00:37:24 keep itself relevant but it hasn't helped his approval rating because
00:37:24 --> 00:37:29 his approval rating right now they say it is at an all time low right now but
00:37:29 --> 00:37:33 that's because a lot of his people are getting tired of him too you know so
00:37:33 --> 00:37:41 it's very interesting and you know I have a feeling though he's setting us up
00:37:41 --> 00:37:43 for something really really big you know.
00:37:44 --> 00:37:48 And and yeah yeah and
00:37:48 --> 00:37:51 of course that's that's you know of course they're trying to you
00:37:51 --> 00:37:56 know they're trying to clean up those epstein falls right now so you know and
00:37:56 --> 00:38:01 and i think you know he's i think they're just setting up to give him the nobel
00:38:01 --> 00:38:05 peace prize and of course if he gets that that's going to make him look good
00:38:05 --> 00:38:10 you know you know because you know he he claims he stopped this war, he stopped that war,
00:38:11 --> 00:38:15 you know, all that stuff, he's up there blowing up ships that has fentanyl on
00:38:15 --> 00:38:16 it, and you wonder to yourself, hmm,
00:38:17 --> 00:38:19 why did you really do that?
00:38:20 --> 00:38:25 You know, so, I don't know, the whole thing's really weird to me,
00:38:26 --> 00:38:30 Leonard, I mean, this guy has way too much power, he gets away,
00:38:30 --> 00:38:33 you know, he gets away with too many things,
00:38:34 --> 00:38:41 and I mean he's basically dominated our stories tonight I mean you know the
00:38:41 --> 00:38:43 stuff that he's getting away with so you know,
00:38:45 --> 00:38:51 That's all I got to say about it. He can give you a migraine headache every
00:38:51 --> 00:38:52 day. You know what I mean?
00:38:53 --> 00:38:59 With the stuff you hear him say, with the stuff he does. So that's my thoughts. That's my thoughts.
00:39:01 --> 00:39:04 You got anything to add? No, enough said.
00:39:05 --> 00:39:08 We'll see what we talk about him about next week. Yeah, well,
00:39:08 --> 00:39:11 let's see if he puts America first, man. Let's see if he doesn't.
00:39:13 --> 00:39:16 Moving on to our last story of the night.
00:39:17 --> 00:39:21 I thought this was interesting. This has been one of our favorite people to
00:39:21 --> 00:39:22 talk about over the years.
00:39:23 --> 00:39:32 Miss Lupita Luongo reveals she was only offered slave roles after her historic Oscar win.
00:39:34 --> 00:39:40 So Lupita Luongo is sharing her experience navigating Hollywood after becoming
00:39:40 --> 00:39:41 an Academy Award winner.
00:39:41 --> 00:39:48 And her account reinforces long-standing concerns about how the industry treats Black actresses.
00:39:48 --> 00:39:55 During a recent CNN Inside Africa conversation, she recalled how in 2014,
00:39:55 --> 00:40:02 her Oscar victory didn't open doors to diverse opportunities as many might have expected.
00:40:02 --> 00:40:09 Instead of receiving varied role offers, Duongo found herself repeatedly pitched
00:40:09 --> 00:40:13 scripts centered around enslaved characters.
00:40:14 --> 00:40:19 The pattern was so disheartening, she said. After I won that Academy Award,
00:40:20 --> 00:40:22 you think I'm going to get the roles here and there.
00:40:22 --> 00:40:32 The 12 Years a Slave star said, Lupina, we'd like you to play in another movie where you play a slave.
00:40:32 --> 00:40:34 But this time, you're on a slave ship.
00:40:35 --> 00:40:42 Those were the type of roles I was getting offered after I won the Academy Award.
00:40:42 --> 00:40:48 Beyond the limiting casting opportunities Nwango also endured public speculation
00:40:48 --> 00:40:56 About her career longevity There were think pieces Is this the beginning of
00:40:56 --> 00:41:00 the end Of the dark-skinned black African woman's career?
00:41:01 --> 00:41:06 You know, saying that She basically was going to Only get those type of roles
00:41:06 --> 00:41:10 And nothing else was going to happen for her Because she was a dark-skinned black woman,
00:41:11 --> 00:41:16 If that means I work one job less than a year to ensure I'm not perpetuating
00:41:16 --> 00:41:21 the stereotypes that are expecting of people from my continent,
00:41:21 --> 00:41:23 then let me do that, she said.
00:41:24 --> 00:41:29 She, you know, Lupita Luongo has, you know,
00:41:30 --> 00:41:37 she has range, but, you know, we haven't seen her play a lawyer on TV or in
00:41:37 --> 00:41:40 a movie. We haven't seen her.
00:41:40 --> 00:41:45 I've never seen her play a cop or a judge.
00:41:45 --> 00:41:51 You know when we think about the roles we've seen her in you know,
00:41:52 --> 00:41:58 we've seen her in the Black Panther movies, we've seen her in 12 Years a Slave
00:41:58 --> 00:42:01 there was another movie oh, Django.
00:42:03 --> 00:42:08 And then what was The Quiet Place where she actually was playing a different
00:42:08 --> 00:42:13 character than those other characters we just mentioned but she didn't do a
00:42:13 --> 00:42:16 lot of talking in that movie because it was called A Quiet Place, you know?
00:42:17 --> 00:42:22 So, you know, so, and she wasn't glamorized in that movie.
00:42:22 --> 00:42:26 You know, she was, you know, because of the type of what was going on in that movie.
00:42:27 --> 00:42:31 So the roles that she's been offered and that she has played,
00:42:31 --> 00:42:33 even though she's played them very well,
00:42:34 --> 00:42:38 you know, you would think that she would get some better roles because we,
00:42:39 --> 00:42:43 you know, we've seen white actresses who will come out and do it.
00:42:45 --> 00:42:50 You know, Kim Kardashian is being lauded for the series that she's on now.
00:42:51 --> 00:42:57 That's why she's become this big actress. You know, because the few movies and
00:42:57 --> 00:43:00 roles she's been in, they've always panned her.
00:43:00 --> 00:43:02 You know, talked about she can't act and everything.
00:43:03 --> 00:43:09 But yet, she's getting a role as a lawyer on this new series she's on.
00:43:10 --> 00:43:14 You know? I mean, you know, it's just interesting. You know,
00:43:14 --> 00:43:17 because we've heard, what's her girl's name?
00:43:17 --> 00:43:20 Oh, my God. Name escapes me right now.
00:43:22 --> 00:43:25 The Academy Award winner, dark-skinned actress.
00:43:26 --> 00:43:30 Wow. That is so crazy. She was on How to Get Away with Murder.
00:43:31 --> 00:43:36 Oh, Angela Davis. I mean. Not Angela Bassett. No. No, no, no.
00:43:36 --> 00:43:42 Viola Davis. Viola Davis. Oh, my God. I'm getting old. I can't remember things anymore.
00:43:43 --> 00:43:48 Viola Davis has also talked about stuff like this, where she said that it took
00:43:48 --> 00:43:54 her a long time to be able to step into other roles other than a dark-skinned Black woman would play.
00:43:55 --> 00:44:01 Even Angela Davis, it took her a while to step up into some of these roles.
00:44:01 --> 00:44:07 Now, she's not as dark-skinned as those two are, but we know that Hollywood
00:44:07 --> 00:44:13 has always been an issue. there's always been an issue with colorizing in Hollywood.
00:44:13 --> 00:44:17 We've known that already, you know, so, you know, you're not,
00:44:17 --> 00:44:23 you know, and even so, when we see some of our actresses that we know started
00:44:23 --> 00:44:25 out darker skin, all of a sudden now.
00:44:26 --> 00:44:29 Lighter skinned people because they know that
00:44:29 --> 00:44:32 they had to change up to make sure that
00:44:32 --> 00:44:39 they fit the roles a little bit better you know but you know viola davis has
00:44:39 --> 00:44:43 made a lot of fuss about it even a person like taraji p henson has talked about
00:44:43 --> 00:44:48 this as well you know so but what's your thoughts on all of this what you thought
00:44:48 --> 00:44:50 what's your thoughts on what lapida was talking about,
00:44:51 --> 00:44:53 I can see it because, you know, I think there's a stereotype.
00:44:54 --> 00:44:58 So one, Lapita is dark skin, you know, of darker complexion.
00:44:59 --> 00:45:04 And she, you know, she's obviously has an accent, an African accent.
00:45:04 --> 00:45:09 And I think that causes people just to not see her in some of these traditional
00:45:09 --> 00:45:16 American roles unless she's like playing somebody of African descent. You know what I mean?
00:45:17 --> 00:45:22 Like, you know, I just feel like that's just white culture, you know,
00:45:22 --> 00:45:24 that like that that's white Hollywood.
00:45:24 --> 00:45:28 And that's how they see if you have an accent, you look a certain way,
00:45:28 --> 00:45:31 you're typecast, you know, into the rules.
00:45:32 --> 00:45:37 Right. I get it. Yeah. And, you know, it kind of makes me think I had gone somewhere.
00:45:37 --> 00:45:41 You know, sometimes you go to like you go to like a hotel and you'll turn on
00:45:41 --> 00:45:45 the TV and sometimes the TV will start with Channel 2.
00:45:46 --> 00:45:50 And channel two would be like some old Western type movies or,
00:45:50 --> 00:45:54 you know, like Bonanza, you know, Cowboy Indians.
00:45:55 --> 00:46:00 And I forget where I was. I turn on the TV and I'm watching and I'm laughing
00:46:00 --> 00:46:05 at myself because it was a movie that had like Cowboys and Indians and all that.
00:46:05 --> 00:46:08 Dave, would you believe all the Indians were white people?
00:46:09 --> 00:46:13 Yeah, I believe it. Like white people playing the Indians.
00:46:14 --> 00:46:18 Yeah. I mean, it's just crazy, you know, so it's like, you know,
00:46:18 --> 00:46:23 I think they just like to stereotype, you know, how they like to stereotype.
00:46:23 --> 00:46:29 I mean, it doesn't make any sense, but, you know, I think if it were almost...
00:46:31 --> 00:46:39 I think it's more acceptable to white America to see like a foreign white female,
00:46:39 --> 00:46:45 like let's say somebody from Ukraine, Germany, Russia, to have an accent.
00:46:46 --> 00:46:50 And it, you know, it gives a certain appeal, but I feel like,
00:46:51 --> 00:46:55 you know, for white America, you know, someone has that African accent and they
00:46:55 --> 00:46:58 immediately start thinking of, you know,
00:46:59 --> 00:47:04 like, you know, they can only play someone from Africa and I don't know.
00:47:05 --> 00:47:09 Yeah, it's a shame that people get stereotyped the way that they do.
00:47:09 --> 00:47:15 And, you know, when you look at now, because on the men's side, the men,
00:47:15 --> 00:47:18 don't get stereotyped that way you know
00:47:18 --> 00:47:22 i mean some of the top actors on the
00:47:22 --> 00:47:25 men's side are dark-skinned guys you know so are
00:47:25 --> 00:47:28 they african though well you
00:47:28 --> 00:47:32 know you got a guy like edrid elba who's from you
00:47:32 --> 00:47:34 know but he had he had more of
00:47:34 --> 00:47:37 an english well yeah and that's why i'm trying to differentiate
00:47:37 --> 00:47:41 between this the english accent and the
00:47:41 --> 00:47:44 african accent i i i
00:47:44 --> 00:47:47 feel like a black person with a black with
00:47:47 --> 00:47:50 an african accent gets criticism is
00:47:50 --> 00:47:54 more get their treatment is more critical than
00:47:54 --> 00:47:58 a black actor with the english accent well
00:47:58 --> 00:48:02 what about uh what's his name what am i thinking about uh don't even mention
00:48:02 --> 00:48:07 the guy from amistad because he was on some show a couple months ago talking
00:48:07 --> 00:48:13 about he could not get any roles oh really yeah he was like no and And I think
00:48:13 --> 00:48:15 he won something for Amistad, too.
00:48:15 --> 00:48:20 Right. He did. He did. Yeah. But he was saying that he cannot get any roles, people.
00:48:20 --> 00:48:22 In fact, why are you talking? I'm going to try to find that article because
00:48:22 --> 00:48:27 I wonder if it's the same exact thing she's saying because of his if he's getting great jazz.
00:48:29 --> 00:48:33 Isn't Mahershal Ali from Africa? Is he part African?
00:48:34 --> 00:48:37 Yeah, but I don't think he has an accent. Okay.
00:48:39 --> 00:48:44 Well, I guess you're right. I can't think of other than, well,
00:48:44 --> 00:48:48 the guy that was in 12 Years a Slave with Lapita.
00:48:49 --> 00:48:54 I can't remember how you pronounce his name. He was also, right, Ketilfor?
00:48:55 --> 00:48:57 Is that his name? I don't know.
00:48:58 --> 00:49:01 Yeah he he's also
00:49:01 --> 00:49:04 i think he's part african today i'm
00:49:04 --> 00:49:09 sorry not to cut y'all so i'm looking right here and i forget how to pronounce
00:49:09 --> 00:49:18 his name but it looks like jimmon yeah yeah who's my hansu so he says that even
00:49:18 --> 00:49:22 though he starred in critically acclaimed films such as amstad and Blood Diamond,
00:49:22 --> 00:49:26 that he is struggling to make a living.
00:49:27 --> 00:49:31 He's been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations
00:49:31 --> 00:49:36 in many blockbuster films, but he's still struggling financially.
00:49:36 --> 00:49:41 I'm just trying to see if he kind of says why he... Well, remember,
00:49:41 --> 00:49:44 we talked about this. Yeah. We talked about him. Yeah.
00:49:45 --> 00:49:48 And, oh, Dave, that's what he says. And this is probably the same thing with Lapita.
00:49:48 --> 00:49:54 He said the conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go.
00:49:55 --> 00:49:59 Systemic racism won't change anytime soon.
00:50:01 --> 00:50:09 And he feels, he said he has yet to meet a film that has paid him fairly.
00:50:09 --> 00:50:12 He needs to go on Tyler Perry.
00:50:13 --> 00:50:19 I'm sure Tyler will take care of him. Yeah, that makes sense. That makes sense.
00:50:19 --> 00:50:29 I'm trying to think, would he be considered the top black African actor? I don't know.
00:50:30 --> 00:50:33 I'm actually doing a search right now.
00:50:34 --> 00:50:41 Let's see. Oh, well, what you call him? Oh, I said Egypt's popular.
00:50:41 --> 00:50:43 Boris Kojo has African descent.
00:50:44 --> 00:50:48 Yeah, but he also grew up in Europe. Yeah, yeah. Germany.
00:50:49 --> 00:50:54 They have Egypt on this list. Yeah, and I'm not knocking being African,
00:50:54 --> 00:51:00 but having the accent like Lapita and Hansel.
00:51:01 --> 00:51:06 I know there was one movie that he just did. He had an African accent. Oh.
00:51:07 --> 00:51:15 But, yeah, I'm sure. Yeah, but I guess Dejaman Hounsou is probably the most
00:51:15 --> 00:51:18 popular one. Wow. Interesting.
00:51:19 --> 00:51:28 Well, I mean, you know, we can't say the colorism has gone away because clearly it's still here.
00:51:29 --> 00:51:33 So, you know, and it looks like it's on both men and the women's side when it
00:51:33 --> 00:51:35 comes to African actors.
00:51:35 --> 00:51:38 But one thing I will say about
00:51:38 --> 00:51:42 Africans they will do their own movies though they have plenty they got plenty
00:51:42 --> 00:51:48 of movies out there and they got plenty of TV series and so and when you go
00:51:48 --> 00:51:54 on Instagram and TikTok they're all over the you know with their little skits
00:51:54 --> 00:51:55 and everything they're all over those,
00:51:56 --> 00:52:00 social media outlets so so,
00:52:02 --> 00:52:07 I'm sure they'll figure it out they'll make their way But it's really a shame
00:52:07 --> 00:52:12 because we know there's a lot of people with a lot less talent than the people
00:52:12 --> 00:52:16 we've talked about that get a lot more credit than they deserve.
00:52:17 --> 00:52:20 We'll put it that way. And they're not black.
00:52:21 --> 00:52:26 All right. That brings us to Leonard's favorite part of the show.
00:52:26 --> 00:52:30 You can't wait for this part every week. so just
00:52:30 --> 00:52:33 want to make sure that we honor him
00:52:33 --> 00:52:38 with his request to have this part of the show done every week he said this
00:52:38 --> 00:52:42 part of the show done or this part deleted you mean this part deleted and then
00:52:42 --> 00:52:50 no yeah i thought you'd say that but anyway this is dave's corner everybody
00:52:50 --> 00:52:53 you know I hear the cheering in the background. Yay!
00:52:55 --> 00:53:01 So, I got a question for you, sir. And this is my question for today's Day's Corner question.
00:53:03 --> 00:53:09 Which famous man and woman body would you take over if you had the chance for
00:53:09 --> 00:53:12 a month so you could see how they live?
00:53:15 --> 00:53:19 Maybe for a man, Jeff Bezos.
00:53:20 --> 00:53:25 Okay. You know, believe it or not, that was my pick. I know,
00:53:25 --> 00:53:27 Deca, you want to be like me.
00:53:28 --> 00:53:33 You know, see what that billionaire life is like, just in case I wouldn't like it.
00:53:33 --> 00:53:37 I don't know. You know, got to experience to know whether I'd like it or not.
00:53:38 --> 00:53:43 If it's a woman, of course, you'd have to be a single celibate woman.
00:53:43 --> 00:53:45 But let me see what this would be.
00:53:49 --> 00:53:55 Well, how would you know whether she's Sullivan or not? I know. Yeah. I know.
00:53:56 --> 00:53:59 I know. But you can have that. Dreams to nightmares.
00:54:00 --> 00:54:05 Dreams to nightmares. But you can have that control. You can have that control. All right.
00:54:06 --> 00:54:11 We know what you're making a reference to. So I get it. Yeah. Oh.
00:54:15 --> 00:54:23 I mean i don't know woman that's a stumper right there dave you think of a woman
00:54:23 --> 00:54:29 i mean i can think of a woman the first thing i'll tell them i'm not gonna say
00:54:29 --> 00:54:34 beyonce you're trying not okay i thought you're gonna say beyonce all right no uh-huh.
00:54:35 --> 00:54:38 To oprah yeah be beyonce life i'm sure
00:54:38 --> 00:54:43 it's too busy you probably stress me out you don't think oprah's busy not like
00:54:43 --> 00:54:48 beyonce you know oh you know oprah's probably you know she's she's spending
00:54:48 --> 00:54:55 time in her garden her book club yeah you know probably nah yeah oprah it is
00:54:55 --> 00:54:57 you know ironically David,
00:54:57 --> 00:55:06 if you had, if, if which famous man and woman's body,
00:55:06 --> 00:55:12 would you take over if you had a chance to live in that body for a month so
00:55:12 --> 00:55:13 you can see how they live?
00:55:15 --> 00:55:20 Well, my actual answers was Jeff Bezos and Oprah Winfrey.
00:55:20 --> 00:55:25 Oh my goodness. But I'm going to go with, since you named him,
00:55:25 --> 00:55:27 I'm going to go to two other people.
00:55:27 --> 00:55:30 I'm going to say Michael Jordan. Okay.
00:55:31 --> 00:55:36 For the obvious. I mean, you know, he's doing all right.
00:55:37 --> 00:55:43 You know what I mean? And I'd just like to see just his mentality as far as,
00:55:43 --> 00:55:50 you know, being who he is, you know, and being such a larger than life figure.
00:55:50 --> 00:55:58 So he would be one as far as the man as far as the woman other than Oprah I.
00:55:59 --> 00:56:04 I guess I would say, it sounds like you're about to say Gail King. I get it.
00:56:05 --> 00:56:10 I ain't going to say Gail. I wouldn't, no, Gail, no, not Gail.
00:56:11 --> 00:56:18 I would probably say the person that Jeff Bezos is about to marry. Oh, okay.
00:56:19 --> 00:56:26 Yeah. Is it Laura or something? Yeah, yeah. Because think about the spot that he's in, you know.
00:56:27 --> 00:56:32 And, you know, just like Bezos' former wife, you know, who walked away with
00:56:32 --> 00:56:36 all that money, you know, they get married, she's going to walk away with something
00:56:36 --> 00:56:38 too, you know, if something happens.
00:56:38 --> 00:56:41 Oh, are you talking about his former wife or the one he's about to marry?
00:56:41 --> 00:56:42 I'm talking about the one that he's about to marry.
00:56:43 --> 00:56:46 Oh, okay. Laura Sanchez or something? Yeah, Laura Sanchez. Because,
00:56:46 --> 00:56:49 of course, you know, people love to follow her.
00:56:49 --> 00:56:52 And, of course, you know, she's a character.
00:56:53 --> 00:56:58 And she looks like she's living it up right now. You know, I wouldn't mind just
00:56:58 --> 00:57:06 to see, you know, having all that, you know, so being with, you know,
00:57:07 --> 00:57:09 I mean, you know, between him and Bill Gates,
00:57:10 --> 00:57:12 you imagine sitting down playing
00:57:12 --> 00:57:17 a card game with them and they betting a million apiece. on a hand.
00:57:17 --> 00:57:22 So, I mean, that's crazy. That's crazy to me.
00:57:22 --> 00:57:28 But, you know, I just wanted to see just how they live.
00:57:28 --> 00:57:32 And, you know, if everything is really as.
00:57:33 --> 00:57:36 You know, what, what is all, what you think it's all out to be when you got
00:57:36 --> 00:57:39 all that kind of money, you know?
00:57:39 --> 00:57:45 So, so I guess that would be my, my, my, my other two choices.
00:57:45 --> 00:57:49 I mean, but my first choices would be the same choices that you have.
00:57:49 --> 00:57:55 Gotcha. Okay. All right, folks, you guys can give us your choices if you'd like,
00:57:55 --> 00:58:00 and let us know what you guys would think, but definitely, you know,
00:58:00 --> 00:58:01 that's a question to think about.
00:58:01 --> 00:58:10 So, well, it's Thanksgiving week, and we hope that you guys have a great holiday
00:58:10 --> 00:58:16 and enjoy whatever you're going to do, family, friends,
00:58:16 --> 00:58:19 whatever you're going to be doing that day. We want you to be safe.
00:58:19 --> 00:58:22 Come back and check us out next week.
00:58:22 --> 00:58:27 We're thankful for you guys that tune in every week or even if you don't tune
00:58:27 --> 00:58:32 in every week whenever you tune in we're thankful for all that you guys do to
00:58:32 --> 00:58:36 keep us supported and you know listen to,
00:58:37 --> 00:58:39 anything you want to add Leonard?
00:58:40 --> 00:58:45 Other than that I just want to wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving please take
00:58:45 --> 00:58:49 advantage of your loved ones tell them you love them because you know a lot
00:58:49 --> 00:58:52 of people have passed this year Dave and And, you know,
00:58:53 --> 00:58:56 sometimes the second opportunities don't come around.
00:58:57 --> 00:59:01 And, yeah, that's true. I mean, you know, we had the 22-year-old football player
00:59:01 --> 00:59:06 that, you know, were Dallas Cowboys, and, you know, and that was,
00:59:07 --> 00:59:11 you know, there was a call for help there, and nobody heard him, you know?
00:59:12 --> 00:59:20 So we have to, we definitely have to listen, pay attention, and try to understand
00:59:20 --> 00:59:25 the things that are going on in this world today because there's a lot. It really is.
00:59:26 --> 00:59:31 So, but like I said, we're thankful for you guys. Thank you for taking the time to listen to us.
00:59:32 --> 00:59:34 Happy Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving.
00:59:44 --> 00:59:48 Tune in next week, ladies and gentlemen, for another edition of News and Trends
00:59:48 --> 00:59:51 with your hosts, Dave and Lynn.
