00:01:36 --> 00:01:42 Guide, DelawareBlack.com, black media specialist, all-around good guy. How goes it, Dave?
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 Man, I can't call it. It's another week. The Eagles are a 4-0.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:54 I can't complain because, you know, you and I were together watching the football
00:01:54 --> 00:01:57 game on Sunday, and, you know, they've kind of given us, you know,
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 some heart palpitations that day.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:05 You know so but you know they figured out a way to win the game they're starting
00:02:05 --> 00:02:10 out the season 4-0 hey they're not the chance you know they had a chance for
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 doing exactly what they do and that's a win bro,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:20 you know what's going on with you nothing just one of those weeks that an entrepreneur
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 wish he had a 9-5 you know that's it,
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 well you know what's going on what's going on,
00:02:28 --> 00:02:31 All that money, man, you know. All what money? All what money?
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 Hold on. You get to buy, you get to buy.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 Well, that rose you have sitting in front of your house, that's,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 oh, I'm not supposed to tell people about that one. Yeah, I'm sorry.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 Yeah, but anyway, you know, as an entrepreneur, man, that's what you do.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 You choose that life, you live that life, and that's what you do.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 Well, Dave, you know, I always think about that commercial where they're like,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 they said it will be fun, you know.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 And then at the end of the day, it's like, you know, every entrepreneur has
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 that goal of having freedom, able to make their own decisions.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:10 But they shoot. I mean, to be honest, I have less freedom than, you know, before.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:14 But I mean, you know, at the end of the day, you're right. This is what I chose.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:17 And even though I complain, I probably wouldn't give it up.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 So you've been doing it all this time. I mean, you know, I mean,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 I can't even picture you now deciding to punch a clock.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 I can't see you doing that anymore. I know. But, you know, if I do,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 I know where I'm going. I'm going to the state of Delaware, Social Security.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:39 I'm like, Dave Coker, hook me up. Yeah, okay. All right. Hook me up.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:43 Yeah, well, you better catch me before I get out of there. So that's all I got to say.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:51 But we want to thank everybody for joining us. And we have a really special treat for you.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 Tonight and we want you guys to
00:03:54 --> 00:03:57 well it's funny because when i said i was going
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 to have this person on let her you know a couple
00:04:00 --> 00:04:06 people that i work with and a couple people who who who she is was all giddy
00:04:06 --> 00:04:11 and everything they couldn't wait for this show to come you know so so you know
00:04:11 --> 00:04:15 our guests already have some big fans out there in these streets especially
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 in this area so so So but what I want you to do,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:25 let's let's let's give the people a clue about the guests that we have on the
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 day. Why don't you go ahead and give the bio?
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 Yep. So our guest today is Karen Lynette.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:37 She is an acclaimed songstress, actress, radio personality from Silver Spring,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:43 Maryland, with over 30 years of captivating audiences in the Washington, D.C.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:49 Area and beyond. She had performed at iconic venues such as Blues Alley.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:55 Dar Constitution Hall, the Warner Theater, and the legendary Apollo Theater.
00:04:56 --> 00:05:00 Her powerful renditions of the national anthem have graced events at the Kennedy
00:05:00 --> 00:05:05 Center and NBA games for the Washington Mystics and Wizards.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:10 Throughout her career, Karen has shared the stage with music legends including
00:05:10 --> 00:05:16 Norman Connors, Dawn Robinson, Michael Henderson, CeCe Peniston.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:23 Mickey Howard, Tom Brown, Dexter Wanzell, and Eric Roberson.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:30 In 2019, she released her debut EP, Upside of Life, featuring the chart topping
00:05:30 --> 00:05:35 tracks, Another Star, and Upside of Life, featuring Najee.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 Both landing on the Smooth Jazz
00:05:38 --> 00:05:45 Top 100, UK Soul Charts, and Billboard's Smooth Music Most Added List.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:52 The same year she was considered for Grammy nominations for Best R&B Song and Best New Artist.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:59 In 2019, Karen starred as a lead in a Dennis Williams stage play,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:04 I Cried the Blues at the Warner Theater, which returns in October of 2025.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:10 She continues to thrill audiences nationwide with her dynamic blend of soul,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:17 R&B, jazz, pop, and hip-hop, performing for dignitaries such as D.C.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:24 Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maryland Senator Angela Also Brooks.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:31 In 2025, Karen went viral after an impromptu collaboration where all artists
00:06:31 --> 00:06:37 Fulton Lee, sparking the hit singles Fire and Lightning and The Weight of It All,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:45 farther cementing her place as a versatile, versatile, inspiring entertainer.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 And before we bring you on, Karen, I just want to play something.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:56 So the bio was fabulous, but I feel like a lot of people may recognize what I'm about to play.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:02 So I'm just gonna oh yeah what's up hey you a singer I do a little something
00:07:02 --> 00:07:09 alright yeah take a seat so I'm gonna have you sing numbers okay you'll sing
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 a new number every bar so I'll show you what I mean it'll be like this.
00:07:13 --> 00:08:50 Music.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:57 Now, close the door. Close the door. OK, so with that said, we would like to
00:08:57 --> 00:09:01 officially welcome to the show. And I see you smiling over there.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:05 We'd like to welcome Karen Lynette. How are you?
00:09:05 --> 00:09:10 I'm well. How are you? Good. So for anybody who's not familiar with the clip
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 I played and Karen, I apologize.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 I've seen this video, but I wasn't familiar with it.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 You know how you just watch it and be like, oh, man, she blew the house off.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:25 But they Dave had sent me the video. He's like, Hey, I'm thinking about seeing
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 if she'll come on the show. And in my mind, I was like, she ain't got to come on the show, Dave.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:33 But for anyone who hasn't seen the video, in fact, Karen, I'm,
00:09:33 --> 00:09:38 I'm going to, if it's okay, before we get to the questions, can you kind of,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 cause I feel like you can probably explain it better than we can.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:48 Can you explain the video that our listeners just heard the audio for?
00:09:49 --> 00:09:54 Okay. So a young man, young artist by the name of Colton Lee reached out.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:58 We didn't know each other, complete strangers. And I guess he came across my
00:09:58 --> 00:10:05 social media and said, I dig your voice and would you like to come and collaborate with me?
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 And I'm free on this day. And I'm like, okay, I can make that happen.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:14 So I show up, you know, cause then funny side note was a lot of people and comments
00:10:14 --> 00:10:19 were saying oh it's staged i'm like well technically it's not because i literally
00:10:19 --> 00:10:26 had zero idea he was a complete stranger and so oh when i get there he just tells me what to do,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:31 and that's that was the history we cut the song we recorded it once and then
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 he said okay we're gonna do a second take and this time you you know do whatever
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 you know you want to do and then therefore that's when you get that big old whale note.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:47 Yeah, because I literally I was like sitting there like, I don't know what I
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 should do. And then I'll just bust out with this note.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:54 And the rest is history. It just kind of came off the top.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:59 So I saw that video and it became a movie there.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:05 I watched it so many times. I was like, did you just do that for real?
00:11:06 --> 00:11:11 And the letter will tell you, I mean, I'm in, you know, I manage musicians,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:15 bands and so forth. So I've been in the music business a long time.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:20 So it takes a lot to impress me. I've heard all kinds of singers, some great ones.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:29 And that little couple of minutes was like, wow, she made numbers sound good. You know what I mean?
00:11:32 --> 00:11:36 So, but thank you for taking the time. Thank you.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:42 Because I told Leonard, like Leonard said, I told Leonard, I'm going to get your lady on.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 No, I didn't ask any questions. I'm just telling you what happened.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 I told you I was going to get her on here.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 So, but anyway, go ahead. Go ahead. Ask your questions, Leonard.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 Leonard wants to steal all the spotlight.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:55 This is what we go through. So anyway, go ahead.
00:11:56 --> 00:12:01 Anyway. Yep. So, Karen, when you met up with Fulton Lee, did you have any,
00:12:02 --> 00:12:06 well, I'm sure you probably, you knew who he was or looked up who he was.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:12 No, not really. I didn't actually. Yeah, I wanted to be, I did not check out,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 I did not look at any videos.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 I just saw, you know, I was like, I said, okay, I saw he was on Instagram.
00:12:18 --> 00:12:22 I just kind of, you know, just kind of grazed his account just really quick
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 or whatever. And then that was pretty much it.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:28 So I just I kind of wanted to I guess that I guess I also wanted the element of surprise.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:32 So I was like, OK, yeah. And I understand when I looked at his account right
00:12:32 --> 00:12:36 now, he has over two million people, two million followers. Yeah.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:40 Yeah. The only reason I say because, you know, now they like everyone's trying
00:12:40 --> 00:12:44 to prank somebody on social media and do weird stuff.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:50 But when you were doing or, you know, when you were doing this performance with
00:12:50 --> 00:12:59 Fulton Lee, after it was over, did you have any idea that it may go as viral as it did?
00:13:00 --> 00:13:04 Uh, I, you know what? And actually the funny thing is, and that's how quickly
00:13:04 --> 00:13:09 social media can change because I think when I first saw his account, he was at 1.2.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:11 Now you say he's at 2 million. Like, wow.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:15 But the thing is, I said, right.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:19 And I was like, okay, he has 1.2 million followers. I said, I said to myself
00:13:19 --> 00:13:23 in all honesty, I said, yeah, I'm sure I'll get some, get some eyes on me at
00:13:23 --> 00:13:28 this point, but to the magnitude that it did go, I did not know. Gotcha.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:33 Now, so speaking of you thinking you're going to get some eyes on you,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:38 what has what has come from, you know, I guess being featured in that video?
00:13:38 --> 00:13:44 Have there been like offers or deals or, you know, people probably want to rep
00:13:44 --> 00:13:47 you and, you know, all that stuff?
00:13:48 --> 00:13:53 More so collaborative inquiries is what I've received primarily.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:56 A lot of people say, oh, come, can you, can you want to get on a track?
00:13:56 --> 00:13:58 I have a song. Can you listen to it?
00:13:59 --> 00:14:04 And so, yeah, it's just, it's been a flood of those, but no record deals yet.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 But who knows? I mean, it's still open.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:11 I mean, you, you, you are on using friends with Dave and Lynn.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:18 So you, you never, you never know. You never know.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:24 The song is still trending. I literally get notifications on the daily,
00:14:24 --> 00:14:29 multiple times a day for several weeks after my head was literally swimming,
00:14:29 --> 00:14:35 trying to filter through notifications because I just I wanted to be able to
00:14:35 --> 00:14:38 try to my best to respond to as many people as possible. Right.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:44 Understood. Yeah. I guess taking it back a little bit. So you are from the Washington,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:47 D.C. area. I know I think currently you said you're in PG County.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:49 Is that where you're kind of raised?
00:14:50 --> 00:14:54 I grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland, Silver Spring, to be exact.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:58 Silver Spring is right in the Washington metropolitan area in Silver Spring, Maryland.
00:14:58 --> 00:15:02 So right on the D.C. border, if you will. So grew up there.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:11 Yeah. Yep. Okay. Now, where did your love of music slash singing come from?
00:15:12 --> 00:15:17 The parentals definitely started with them. My parents are soul music lovers,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:19 aren't we're soul music lovers.
00:15:19 --> 00:15:22 So playing music in the house all
00:15:22 --> 00:15:27 the time, grew up with a lot of the soul greats, all of them, you name it.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:31 And then my dad, spending time with him.
00:15:32 --> 00:15:36 I would go to his house on the weekends and like he would come and pick me up
00:15:36 --> 00:15:41 and we would stop at the store get a pack of y'all remember the cassette tapes so we got,
00:15:42 --> 00:15:46 we got he'd pick up a pack he'd pick me up a pack of blank cassette tapes and
00:15:46 --> 00:15:51 I'm literally sitting in front of his stereo the entire weekend you know so,
00:15:51 --> 00:15:54 wow and you've been recording the
00:15:54 --> 00:15:58 whole time oh yeah I used to just make make
00:15:58 --> 00:16:00 tapes for myself you know make tapes for myself and
00:16:00 --> 00:16:04 then later on I started he he
00:16:04 --> 00:16:09 actually let me rewind it back he he bought me I'm a I'm a music collector as
00:16:09 --> 00:16:14 well so he bought me my first 45 I was probably about the age of five it was
00:16:14 --> 00:16:19 the old rock group player baby come back from 1978 I believe so that was my
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 very first 45 to start my collection.
00:16:22 --> 00:16:26 And I had it up until about three years ago, actually.
00:16:26 --> 00:16:31 But my father was a collector and I also am a collector.
00:16:31 --> 00:16:36 So that's how it started there was just growing up listening to the music in the car and in the house.
00:16:37 --> 00:16:41 And how did you transition, I guess, into your first, let's say,
00:16:41 --> 00:16:45 live performance, whether it was in school, after school?
00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 In school. So started out, actually,
00:16:49 --> 00:16:52 I don't know if you call it kind of being a bit of a late bloomer.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:56 I joined choir probably a sophomore year of high school.
00:16:57 --> 00:16:59 And then later on, I think junior
00:16:59 --> 00:17:04 year was gospel show choir and concert choir and on into senior year.
00:17:05 --> 00:17:11 And then what they did, because they tapped me in my senior year to do the commencement,
00:17:11 --> 00:17:14 do the national anthem at our graduation at the Kennedy Center.
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 So that's where the Kennedy Center comes in.
00:17:16 --> 00:17:20 That was actually my first performance in front of thousands of people.
00:17:21 --> 00:17:25 Yeah, we had a class of probably like 300 students, so times that with X amount
00:17:25 --> 00:17:27 of family members per kid.
00:17:27 --> 00:17:30 So there was a couple thousand people in the Kennedy Center,
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 and I'm singing the national anthem.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:34 So we won't talk about how nervous I was.
00:17:36 --> 00:17:38 I'm sure you killed it.
00:17:39 --> 00:17:43 Uh, yeah, I try, but I did the, I did the talent shows at school and all that stuff.
00:17:43 --> 00:17:46 But, but again, the Kennedy Center was a whole different level,
00:17:46 --> 00:17:48 but it was none to my great grandmother.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:52 God rest her soul, caught the Holy Ghost in the, in down there in the Kennedy
00:17:52 --> 00:17:54 Center. Then there you go. So, you know.
00:17:56 --> 00:18:02 Wow. And I guess what that said from there, how did you transition into,
00:18:02 --> 00:18:07 you know, performing at the Mystics and Wizards games and working with some
00:18:07 --> 00:18:09 of the greats that we mentioned in your bio,
00:18:09 --> 00:18:13 Norman Connors, CeCe Peniston, Mickey Howard, Roberson?
00:18:14 --> 00:18:20 Yeah. So after high school, started doing some little things around town or
00:18:20 --> 00:18:22 what have you, my brother was a drummer.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:28 So then I started singing with his band in the late 90s, and I also had joined
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 another local band as well.
00:18:30 --> 00:18:33 I was working with both bands simultaneously in the late 90s.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:39 I started with a cousin of mine actually was rapping, and she asked me to do
00:18:39 --> 00:18:43 a hook for her song, in which I met the manager of that band.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 And that's when I came to join that local band in the area.
00:18:46 --> 00:18:49 So again, working with both of those bands and then just through networking
00:18:49 --> 00:18:54 with many musicians, just then landing other situations, other gigs.
00:18:54 --> 00:18:59 And so basically that's pretty much it. And just kind of then deciding to break
00:18:59 --> 00:19:03 out and do my own thing, as well as continue working with these other acts.
00:19:03 --> 00:19:09 As far as the major artists, some of those opportunities came from my comrades,
00:19:09 --> 00:19:11 my musical comrades, doing shows with them.
00:19:11 --> 00:19:16 So someone like Norman Connors, for instance, working with him was just a dream.
00:19:17 --> 00:19:22 The late, great Nathan Heathman was a musician and music director of Norman
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 Connors, as well as Gene Karn.
00:19:24 --> 00:19:28 And I was working with Norman, who was Nathan, rather, who was playing with
00:19:28 --> 00:19:31 my brother. And I asked him about this song.
00:19:31 --> 00:19:33 There's a famous Norman Connors song called Invitation.
00:19:33 --> 00:19:37 And we did the song at this local club. And afterwards he asked,
00:19:37 --> 00:19:39 he said, do you know who I am? I said, I don't know who you are.
00:19:39 --> 00:19:43 And he said, well, I'm Norman Connors' music director. We had just done Norman's
00:19:43 --> 00:19:45 song. I'm his music director. I was like, wow.
00:19:45 --> 00:19:48 Okay. He says, well, I'm going to call you and we're going to do something.
00:19:48 --> 00:19:52 I was like, yeah, okay. Thought it was the Hollywood talk, quote unquote.
00:19:53 --> 00:19:57 And so several months later, Nathan did call and said, I want you to perform
00:19:57 --> 00:20:00 that song for Norman. We're going to surprise him.
00:20:00 --> 00:20:05 We haven't performed that song since it was recorded. And I was like, oh, my gosh.
00:20:05 --> 00:20:09 So we're going to get on that nervous thing once again and actually surprised
00:20:09 --> 00:20:12 Norman with the song. And he was very pleased with the outcome.
00:20:12 --> 00:20:15 So one of the stories there. That's awesome.
00:20:16 --> 00:20:23 Now, I know that, you know, DC has a big or the DMV has a big go-go music presence
00:20:23 --> 00:20:27 and, you know, Chuck Brown and Backstreet Backyard, you know, all those.
00:20:28 --> 00:20:33 Does that culture flow into your music in any way?
00:20:34 --> 00:20:39 It used to. The first band that I was playing with, local band, was titled Soundproof.
00:20:39 --> 00:20:45 So we were a band that encompassed R&B, classic R&B, plus a little bit of the part.
00:20:45 --> 00:20:49 They called Go-Go or Party Music or what have you. So I got a chance to collaborate
00:20:49 --> 00:20:52 as well. We also, the late, great Little Benny.
00:20:52 --> 00:20:56 So Little Benny was also rocking with us. So that was also an incredible experience.
00:20:57 --> 00:21:02 So, yeah, I did. I did work with some of the bands in the area that perform go go music.
00:21:03 --> 00:21:07 But then I decided to go, you know, focus more on the R&B route.
00:21:07 --> 00:21:09 OK. You know, as time went on.
00:21:09 --> 00:21:13 Gotcha. And, you know, I guess, you know, where you are right now.
00:21:13 --> 00:21:18 And I know in the in the bio we talked about, of course, the you know,
00:21:18 --> 00:21:22 you're in the play and, you know, prior releasing the album.
00:21:22 --> 00:21:25 What are your goals for the future?
00:21:25 --> 00:21:28 What are you looking to do, let's say, in the next year or two?
00:21:29 --> 00:21:32 Definitely want to put out more music. I'm an independent artist,
00:21:32 --> 00:21:36 so the struggles of being an independent artist is if you're an independent
00:21:36 --> 00:21:39 artist out there, anybody listening, you know the struggles.
00:21:39 --> 00:21:42 So it's the it's getting out there.
00:21:42 --> 00:21:48 It's getting it's having the conversations with people, not only with promoters,
00:21:48 --> 00:21:53 but people in general and getting them to kind of expand their musical palates.
00:21:53 --> 00:21:57 A lot of times people get complacent with listening to things that they're familiar
00:21:57 --> 00:21:58 with. They only want the familiar.
00:21:59 --> 00:22:04 So my job is to introduce them to something new. like, I want you to expand
00:22:04 --> 00:22:08 your palate and take a listen to this. And it might be something that you kind of like.
00:22:09 --> 00:22:14 So that's the thing right there. So that's been the challenge, but still performing.
00:22:15 --> 00:22:19 I am appearing, like I said, I'm starring in a musical coming up and actually
00:22:19 --> 00:22:24 in about less than two weeks, I think now, called I've Cried the Blues.
00:22:24 --> 00:22:28 So like I said, that was done in 2019 at the Warner Theater. I'm a lead actress.
00:22:29 --> 00:22:33 It's circa 1945, Arkansas. saw. And it's a period piece.
00:22:33 --> 00:22:39 It's a very emotional piece. It's a very moving piece. And so due to popular demand, reviving that.
00:22:39 --> 00:22:42 And so been in my acting bag a little bit.
00:22:44 --> 00:22:48 Is that also going to be at the Warner Theater? Is that going to be somewhere else?
00:22:48 --> 00:22:54 Yes. Back at the Warner Theater on Saturday, October 11th at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C.
00:22:54 --> 00:22:58 Saturday, October 11th. So yeah, and it's called I've Cried the Blues.
00:22:59 --> 00:23:03 Gotcha. And, you know, my final question before, you know, I guess, Dave.
00:23:04 --> 00:23:08 Well, I do want to say just let you know, we do have a background singer among
00:23:08 --> 00:23:11 the three of us. I'm not going to say who it is, but it's not me.
00:23:14 --> 00:23:20 But I just want to throw that out there. But, you know, my last question is, and, you know.
00:23:21 --> 00:23:23 In the beginning, Dave and I were talking, we're just talking about being an
00:23:23 --> 00:23:28 entrepreneur. Dave is also, he has a job, but he's also an entrepreneur as well.
00:23:29 --> 00:23:33 How do you stay focused? Because prior to the show, I was just telling Dave,
00:23:34 --> 00:23:37 I was like, man, this entrepreneur life is rough and, you know,
00:23:37 --> 00:23:41 it looks good on the outside, but, you know, people don't know the real.
00:23:42 --> 00:23:46 How do you stay focused in pursuing your goal, you know, going through those
00:23:46 --> 00:23:50 ups and downs of being in the music business?
00:23:51 --> 00:23:54 The love of music, first and foremost, because so basically as an artist,
00:23:55 --> 00:23:57 you need to determine why do you do this?
00:23:57 --> 00:24:01 Right. And I do it, you know, are you doing, there's a myriad of reasons why
00:24:01 --> 00:24:04 people are in this business. I do it because I'm passionate about music.
00:24:05 --> 00:24:09 Like I said, I started, I started out as a collector. My parents didn't find
00:24:09 --> 00:24:12 out I was a sang until senior year of high school. They had no idea.
00:24:12 --> 00:24:17 So it wasn't your typical little kid growing up in the church scenario.
00:24:17 --> 00:24:19 It was high school when they found out.
00:24:19 --> 00:24:22 And people ask me, say, did you know that you were a singer?
00:24:23 --> 00:24:28 And I said, I kind of didn't. You know, I guess my music teacher heard something and I didn't hear.
00:24:28 --> 00:24:33 But anywho, it's staying focused. It's knowing why you're in this and then the
00:24:33 --> 00:24:34 support of family and friends.
00:24:35 --> 00:24:40 I have incredible family and friends that support me in everything I do.
00:24:41 --> 00:24:42 All right. Thank you.
00:24:44 --> 00:24:48 Aaron I was sitting here listening to you talking I just thought about this
00:24:48 --> 00:24:55 and you know with your background and everything that you have done and people
00:24:55 --> 00:24:58 that you perform with and you know,
00:24:59 --> 00:25:07 you had the you already had the chops you could sing you know what I mean you already had that going.
00:25:09 --> 00:25:10 And here it is,
00:25:12 --> 00:25:16 you didn't done all these wonderful things. And then you get in this situation
00:25:16 --> 00:25:19 that we played in the very beginning of this show.
00:25:20 --> 00:25:28 And all of a sudden you, you know, you have a whole new perspective on the possibilities
00:25:28 --> 00:25:30 of what could happen from that.
00:25:30 --> 00:25:34 Now, you know, keep, keep, keep in mind, you know, it's gotta be,
00:25:34 --> 00:25:38 I know it's gotta be a little frustrating at times, but it's also an exciting
00:25:38 --> 00:25:42 period for you because you've done all these things,
00:25:42 --> 00:25:46 but yet this little piece is your history right now.
00:25:47 --> 00:25:52 How do you feel about that? Tell me about that. What is your feeling about where you are right now?
00:25:52 --> 00:25:57 It feels good. I mean, I tell you, I woke up,
00:25:58 --> 00:26:04 like I said, I've been grinding and trying to get visibility, and I stay with, I guess,
00:26:04 --> 00:26:10 now in today's day and age, it's all about creating content and constantly being
00:26:10 --> 00:26:13 the president and showing everybody that, okay,
00:26:13 --> 00:26:16 I'm online every day, all day, posting, posting, posting.
00:26:16 --> 00:26:21 And so I had been doing that and, you know, still felt like I wasn't getting
00:26:21 --> 00:26:22 anywhere in it, if you will.
00:26:22 --> 00:26:25 I mean, somewhat, but, you know, not as where I wanted to go.
00:26:26 --> 00:26:32 But then when this happened, it's like, whew, I think overnight it just changed.
00:26:32 --> 00:26:38 And then when I started seeing a few celebrities pop in the room, I was like, wow.
00:26:39 --> 00:26:43 Like people saw the video and they were like commenting.
00:26:44 --> 00:26:47 And I was like, oh my gosh, you're like, Big Daddy Kane, wow.
00:26:48 --> 00:26:54 Like Big Daddy Kane liked my video? You know, so stuff like that.
00:26:54 --> 00:26:56 So yeah, those are the things for me.
00:26:56 --> 00:27:00 And it was really cool. It's really cool. Sheila E., you name it.
00:27:01 --> 00:27:03 It's been, it's Holly Robinson, Pete.
00:27:03 --> 00:27:11 It was like a host of people who took a liking to this video was just incredible.
00:27:11 --> 00:27:15 And I was like, again, that just goes back to like, I didn't know it was going
00:27:15 --> 00:27:18 to go to that level. So, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
00:27:19 --> 00:27:24 And you know, like I said, when I started watching, I watched the video one time and I was like.
00:27:25 --> 00:27:28 What just happened there and i'm playing it again like
00:27:28 --> 00:27:30 i said it became a movie to me you know because i just kept
00:27:30 --> 00:27:34 playing it over and over again but and one
00:27:34 --> 00:27:37 of my one of my co-workers i showed her the video and she
00:27:37 --> 00:27:40 she's following you now you know she
00:27:40 --> 00:27:43 couldn't wait for the show tonight you know she said she got
00:27:43 --> 00:27:46 i got my whole family going to be tuning in tonight you know
00:27:46 --> 00:27:48 so i started laughing i said well you know
00:27:48 --> 00:27:51 but that's what's happening right now let me
00:27:51 --> 00:27:54 ask you the i i saw that
00:27:54 --> 00:27:57 you had a relationship with malcolm jamal warner you know
00:27:57 --> 00:28:00 that you guys knew each other and so
00:28:00 --> 00:28:05 forth what can you tell us about that relationship well actually i i did i had
00:28:05 --> 00:28:12 only met him right about we worked together in june at the capital jazz fest
00:28:12 --> 00:28:18 oh okay all right And he played with your band Yeah.
00:28:21 --> 00:28:25 I worked with a band There's a jazz band in the Washington D.C.
00:28:25 --> 00:28:30 Area Titled Spur of the Moment And we did a tribute At Capitol Jazz,
00:28:31 --> 00:28:39 Honoring the late great Roy Ayers I'm a huge Roy Ayers fan by the way So we did a Roy And Malcolm,
00:28:39 --> 00:28:45 Joined us on stage for that Performance as well So it was actually my first
00:28:45 --> 00:28:50 time meeting him and such a wonderful, wonderful spirit.
00:28:50 --> 00:28:56 So it was pretty devastating, as you can imagine, getting the news the month
00:28:56 --> 00:28:58 later of his transition.
00:28:59 --> 00:29:01 Yeah, I can imagine. Yeah.
00:29:03 --> 00:29:03 Yeah.
00:29:05 --> 00:29:13 So let me ask you this. Okay, so you're in this whole new realm.
00:29:14 --> 00:29:18 Your reality has become a little bit different now.
00:29:19 --> 00:29:25 You know, this is not like when you walked out on the Apollo stage and had to
00:29:25 --> 00:29:26 face all those people, you know.
00:29:27 --> 00:29:30 Matter of fact, tell us about that. How was that? How was that,
00:29:30 --> 00:29:33 by the way, walking out there and facing all those people?
00:29:34 --> 00:29:37 God well i don't i don't god it was so long ago
00:29:37 --> 00:29:41 but actually they have just so you know with the apollo there are a couple of
00:29:41 --> 00:29:46 different versions you have a televised and a non-televised version i was on
00:29:46 --> 00:29:52 the non-televised oh on the non-televised amateur night so i didn't get but
00:29:52 --> 00:29:54 i did get a chance to rub the log i still rub the log.
00:29:56 --> 00:30:00 So that was that was pretty that was pretty cool to rub the log so So,
00:30:00 --> 00:30:06 yeah, I went out there and then actually I, like an usher, said to me,
00:30:06 --> 00:30:10 oh, my gosh, you should come back and audition for the televised.
00:30:10 --> 00:30:12 I said, OK, maybe I'll do that. So we go.
00:30:13 --> 00:30:16 My mom and I, that's my that's my my ride and die right there. My mom.
00:30:17 --> 00:30:23 So the two of us venture to New York in the bitter cold in January and we were outside.
00:30:23 --> 00:30:28 You're on line for hours on end in the bitter cold. and people are waiting in
00:30:28 --> 00:30:33 line to get in and then you get in and do your thing and that was that. So, yeah.
00:30:34 --> 00:30:40 Good experience, though. Did you do the TV show, though? I did not. Wow.
00:30:41 --> 00:30:46 Wow. You know, sometimes for television, I know sometimes for television,
00:30:46 --> 00:30:50 they're always looking not necessarily for talent alone.
00:30:50 --> 00:30:55 Yeah. Sometimes they want the gimmick, they want something or,
00:30:55 --> 00:30:58 you know, yeah so that's that show was fully
00:30:58 --> 00:31:01 full of people with gimmicks so so i i get
00:31:01 --> 00:31:05 it yeah they want the gimmick or the intent the intentional
00:31:05 --> 00:31:08 not so talented so that
00:31:08 --> 00:31:14 you i mean we got to have somebody to boo so right right everybody everybody
00:31:14 --> 00:31:19 can't be great so i know i know there you go there you go i get it i get it
00:31:19 --> 00:31:25 i get it yeah yeah now what i was what I was getting ready to allude to.
00:31:25 --> 00:31:29 So with everything that's going on, and, you know, especially nowadays with
00:31:29 --> 00:31:33 so many different outlets, have you tried to get on any of these singing shows?
00:31:33 --> 00:31:36 The Voice or Idol or any of those shows?
00:31:37 --> 00:31:40 You know, it was the same situation with The Voice.
00:31:42 --> 00:31:46 The same scenario when I did The Voice. My mom and I went to The Voice, too.
00:31:48 --> 00:31:52 And, yeah, it's just, again, it's, you know, and I will say,
00:31:52 --> 00:31:56 like, for me, I live on the stage. I live on the stage.
00:31:57 --> 00:32:03 But the audition process, I don't love it. I don't love the audition process.
00:32:04 --> 00:32:07 I'm in my natural element on the stage, though, however.
00:32:07 --> 00:32:10 But I guess I don't know what exactly they were looking for.
00:32:10 --> 00:32:15 But they took us a group in a room and you do the, everybody gets up and sings
00:32:15 --> 00:32:19 something like 10 in a group and then the people at the table said,
00:32:19 --> 00:32:23 well, we're not selecting anyone from this group, thank y'all for coming. Oh, wow.
00:32:25 --> 00:32:30 It's funny because that's crazy because a young lady from here that both Leonard
00:32:30 --> 00:32:35 and I know, you know, she actually made it pretty far on that show. Yeah. Who was that?
00:32:36 --> 00:32:41 No, she's Nicole. Oh, okay. Yeah. I know a couple of folks from this area as
00:32:41 --> 00:32:46 well have went on to do the show and actually got as far as television and they've done wonderfully.
00:32:47 --> 00:32:50 And, you know, I think, too, here's another thing, too.
00:32:50 --> 00:32:53 I think a lot of times with the shows, you get you get out there,
00:32:53 --> 00:32:57 you're out there super early, you're out online for like six plus hours on end.
00:32:57 --> 00:33:04 And then you're still there's still the need to have the the level of excitement
00:33:04 --> 00:33:07 and all this other stuff, I guess, when you finally get in the room.
00:33:08 --> 00:33:12 And I don't know I don't know if I exuded enough energy I don't know,
00:33:12 --> 00:33:17 I'll be honest yes, okay I get it I don't know,
00:33:18 --> 00:33:25 it's like, yay, I don't know yeah, well, you probably was like, okay,
00:33:27 --> 00:33:32 I'm tired I'm cold yeah, I know can you just hear me sing?
00:33:32 --> 00:33:35 I mean, that's all I want to say that's what I'm saying, I'm like,
00:33:35 --> 00:33:43 I got a good voice I got great points I don't know if I wasn't peppy enough I don't know,
00:33:45 --> 00:33:49 Jennifer Hudson Jennifer Hudson didn't win Idol I mean but she won everything
00:33:49 --> 00:33:52 else you know what I mean she did.
00:33:55 --> 00:34:00 It actually turned out to be a blessing actually not winning Idol turned out
00:34:00 --> 00:34:05 to be a blessing I think it turned out to be a blessing for her not winning
00:34:05 --> 00:34:07 Idol yeah that's right That's right.
00:34:08 --> 00:34:14 Well, let me ask you this. With the internet now, and, you know,
00:34:15 --> 00:34:20 like my partner is very, you know, he's online almost every day.
00:34:20 --> 00:34:23 Well, every day just about because of his business and everything.
00:34:23 --> 00:34:29 And, you know, especially Instagram and TikTok, you know, those two really these
00:34:29 --> 00:34:32 days, you know, that's where everybody goes to try to make it.
00:34:32 --> 00:34:38 And there has been a lot of like big names now that have made it because they
00:34:38 --> 00:34:41 have been diligent in putting their stuff out there.
00:34:41 --> 00:34:49 I know I started watching Teddy Swims a few years ago and I became a fan because
00:34:49 --> 00:34:51 that guy has that voice that's just crazy.
00:34:51 --> 00:34:56 And I was like, I was, you know, we'll watch him and he I know there's one particular
00:34:56 --> 00:34:59 song he used to perform, an old doors song.
00:34:59 --> 00:35:02 And I watch him perform the song and he would kill it every time.
00:35:02 --> 00:35:06 And then all of a sudden, I'm seeing him on the Grammys.
00:35:06 --> 00:35:09 I'm seeing him on, you know, he's been nominated and all of this stuff.
00:35:09 --> 00:35:14 And I'm like, I remember this dude when he first started out, you know. Yeah, yeah.
00:35:14 --> 00:35:20 So I guess it's just, you know, timing and getting, you know,
00:35:21 --> 00:35:23 getting something to get people to listen to.
00:35:23 --> 00:35:30 Do you think that the timing is right for you right now to do some big things?
00:35:31 --> 00:35:36 Absolutely. It's all about timing. It's about timing and having the,
00:35:36 --> 00:35:40 I mean, I guess, yeah, definitely it's about timing and having the right eyes upon you at that time.
00:35:41 --> 00:35:45 So, yeah, that's all. That's that's really pretty much what it is.
00:35:45 --> 00:35:50 And so this business, of course, as you know, is about relationships and timing.
00:35:50 --> 00:35:53 Those are the two ones right there. Right. Yeah, that's true.
00:35:53 --> 00:36:03 That's true um yeah yeah as that with Fulton has he like are you guys planning to do a whole E.T.
00:36:03 --> 00:36:08 Or a whole album or are you guys just I know you have two singles with him right,
00:36:09 --> 00:36:13 yes we talked about it but we we didn't talk about a full E.P.
00:36:13 --> 00:36:17 But what happened was he reached out and he said hey I know this song is getting
00:36:17 --> 00:36:19 a whole lot of buzz do you want to do another one And I said,
00:36:20 --> 00:36:23 sure, let's do another one. So we did the weight of it all.
00:36:23 --> 00:36:25 And people were pleased. And
00:36:25 --> 00:36:30 so, but now the people say, we need a whole album. We need a whole album.
00:36:30 --> 00:36:34 And I said, hold on, guys. Fulton's busy with other stuff. I don't know.
00:36:34 --> 00:36:39 But yeah, because Fulton has went on to do some more collaborations with some other artists.
00:36:39 --> 00:36:45 He's doing really great things. And then he as well has his own band and believe he's going to be going,
00:36:46 --> 00:36:50 believe he said he'll go on tour at the top of next year so he's he's been kind
00:36:50 --> 00:36:54 of busy with that so but we there's still time for us who knows you never know
00:36:54 --> 00:37:01 what the future holds all right wow okay well hopefully fulton takes you out
00:37:01 --> 00:37:04 with i mean because all you need all you need all you need is that right audience,
00:37:05 --> 00:37:11 that's it your own shows you know what i mean so well well i mean.
00:37:12 --> 00:37:17 I know. Yeah, I'm kind of doing that now already, doing another thing as well.
00:37:17 --> 00:37:19 So I'm already doing my own shows.
00:37:19 --> 00:37:23 But, yeah, I mean, I would love to collaborate with Pacific Head. Okay.
00:37:23 --> 00:37:30 Well, speaking of collaborations, and this is my last question, but I had this in my head.
00:37:30 --> 00:37:37 Speaking of collaborations, if you can pick three people, you know I got an answer.
00:37:37 --> 00:37:42 If you can pick three people that you can do a collaboration with
00:37:42 --> 00:37:46 that would just be like the ultimate
00:37:46 --> 00:37:49 thing for you with three people now
00:37:49 --> 00:37:53 and it could be like i mean it could be and i'm
00:37:53 --> 00:37:55 gonna give you i'm gonna give you a little bit of a break it could be people
00:37:55 --> 00:38:00 that are living or people that have passed okay i'll make it easy for you i'll
00:38:00 --> 00:38:05 make it easy for you okay all right yeah that helps okay a lot of my idols have
00:38:05 --> 00:38:10 passed on i know i I figured you were going to say that. Go ahead. Go ahead.
00:38:11 --> 00:38:17 Oh, gosh. Well, still with us is Mr. Stevie Wonder, the icon. Oh, yeah.
00:38:18 --> 00:38:24 For it. Yeah, because one of my singles is a cover of his song, Another Star.
00:38:24 --> 00:38:30 Gosh, you gave me a toughie because there's so many people that I love.
00:38:30 --> 00:38:33 So it's kind of hard to pinpoint, like, who would I pick?
00:38:34 --> 00:38:40 But Stevie would definitely be one. And, ah, ooh-wee, I need a minute.
00:38:42 --> 00:38:46 I need a minute. You know what's so funny?
00:38:46 --> 00:38:50 Stevie's name always comes up in all of these things, though.
00:38:50 --> 00:38:54 That's amazing to me because everybody loves Stevie Wonder.
00:38:55 --> 00:38:58 And it's just incredible that his name always comes up.
00:38:58 --> 00:39:02 His name always comes up. Stevie's a musical genius. He's a musical genius.
00:39:02 --> 00:39:08 And he's just, he's incredible. incredible i mean the man is just he's an icon
00:39:08 --> 00:39:13 he's he's the goat one of the goats yeah um so yeah i mean rightfully so it's
00:39:13 --> 00:39:14 well deserving of the title,
00:39:15 --> 00:39:19 But, golly, I'm feeling stumped right now.
00:39:19 --> 00:39:24 But I'm really at a loss because there's so many that I love.
00:39:25 --> 00:39:32 But I loved, I'm a huge fan of No Longer With Us. Michael Henderson is another one that I adore.
00:39:33 --> 00:39:39 I had the opportunity to perform with him as well. That was incredible.
00:39:41 --> 00:39:48 Okay. And I love Mr. Dexter Wanzell, who's also, you mentioned earlier as well, Mr. Dexter Wanzell.
00:39:48 --> 00:39:53 And that name right there is, I usually like to tell the people,
00:39:53 --> 00:39:59 a lot of the big major hits of the 70s, you knew and you loved,
00:39:59 --> 00:40:02 you just didn't know that was the mastermind behind those songs.
00:40:03 --> 00:40:07 I did. I did. You did. I know you did. I know you did.
00:40:08 --> 00:40:13 Dexter Juan Zellett on the Philly International Records label and writing and
00:40:13 --> 00:40:17 producing for some of the biggest stars on the label was just,
00:40:18 --> 00:40:20 yeah, he's a master at his craft.
00:40:20 --> 00:40:23 And I've also had the pleasure of performing with him as well.
00:40:24 --> 00:40:27 So truly a dream come true. So I'll go with those three.
00:40:27 --> 00:40:31 We'll say Stevie, Dexter, and Michael. okay very
00:40:31 --> 00:40:34 eclectic by the way yeah they're definitely definitely very
00:40:34 --> 00:40:38 eclectic okay yeah all right well
00:40:38 --> 00:40:45 why don't you do us a favor and if you want to give out your social media pages
00:40:45 --> 00:40:49 to have people you know if people want to contact you whatever i would love
00:40:49 --> 00:40:54 to get you up here to do a concert up this way why not yeah so we could talk
00:40:54 --> 00:40:57 about that we definitely could talk about that.
00:40:58 --> 00:41:00 But you know let people know how they can reach out
00:41:00 --> 00:41:03 to you and and and where they can listen to your
00:41:03 --> 00:41:06 music and you know as far as the
00:41:06 --> 00:41:09 play you know you know let people know
00:41:09 --> 00:41:14 about the play and coming down to see the play so you have a moment to go ahead
00:41:14 --> 00:41:21 and do that absolutely thank you so much for having me as well so karen k-a-r-e-n

00:41:49 --> 00:41:55 And my website is KarenLynette.com, www.KarenLynette.com.
00:41:55 --> 00:41:58 So that's my website right there. And I try to do my absolute best to keep up
00:41:58 --> 00:42:02 with current events and where I'm going to be, as well as I post on my social
00:42:02 --> 00:42:05 media handles what's coming up for me.
00:42:05 --> 00:42:08 Because as of right now, like I said, during Saturday, October 11th,
00:42:08 --> 00:42:11 I'll be at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C.
00:42:12 --> 00:42:17 In Saturday, December 6th, I will be at the Gordon Center out in Owings Mills,
00:42:17 --> 00:42:21 Maryland, where I will be honoring the legacy of Aretha Franklin.
00:42:22 --> 00:42:27 So I'm doing that Saturday, December 6th at the Gordon Center in Owings Mills, Maryland.
00:42:27 --> 00:42:33 And Sunday, December 14th, I'll be doing that same show of Aretha in Boca Raton,
00:42:34 --> 00:42:36 Florida at Crazy Uncle Mike's.
00:42:40 --> 00:42:44 That's the name of the place crazy uncle mike crazy uncle
00:42:44 --> 00:42:48 mike i said okay that's what i said too i said okay but yeah
00:42:48 --> 00:42:51 we'll be doing honoring the legacy of aretha franklin so
00:42:51 --> 00:42:53 that's been kind of been a lot of people have been wanting me to do
00:42:53 --> 00:42:57 that show as well so that's been kind of going around i
00:42:57 --> 00:43:00 just recently did the south jazz kitchen in philadelphia doing
00:43:00 --> 00:43:05 the same show so they've taken a liking to the queen of soul and i'm always
00:43:05 --> 00:43:10 grateful to pay homage to her because she was one of the goats again the queen
00:43:10 --> 00:43:17 of soul you can't you can't argue that right you can't argue at all hey leonard i just thought.
00:43:21 --> 00:43:24 Leonard we are leonard owns a
00:43:24 --> 00:43:27 campground in lower delaware here in
00:43:27 --> 00:43:30 houston delaware it's uh one of the few black owned
00:43:30 --> 00:43:38 campgrounds in the whole country and it's a it's over what 30 acres or you know
00:43:38 --> 00:43:43 people come there and do camping and all kinds of things there and and cabins
00:43:43 --> 00:43:48 and whatever but one thing that happens every year there is the black music festival,
00:43:49 --> 00:43:52 it's an outdoor you see where i'm going with this
00:43:52 --> 00:43:55 right leonard yeah yeah yeah so
00:43:55 --> 00:43:59 so and they have all types of entertain all
00:43:59 --> 00:44:02 type of entertainment to come through and perform it's
00:44:02 --> 00:44:07 an outside it's an outside event and it's number love thousands of people come
00:44:07 --> 00:44:12 through and so forth the person who puts that on is a guy by the name of sam
00:44:12 --> 00:44:19 bailey who who is the person who is the mastermind behind it but.
00:44:20 --> 00:44:25 That would be something that we may need to talk to Sam about getting you up
00:44:25 --> 00:44:28 here to perform at next year. It's always in July.
00:44:28 --> 00:44:30 Okay. June. Yeah.
00:44:31 --> 00:44:34 June, okay. June. June. I'm sorry. June. That's right.
00:44:35 --> 00:44:38 And I'm telling you, this thing is just something to behold.
00:44:38 --> 00:44:41 Everybody has a wonderful time every time this thing goes on.
00:44:41 --> 00:44:46 So we might have to put a bug in Mr. Bailey's ear to have a conversation with
00:44:46 --> 00:44:51 you. Do you do all your own bookings and stuff, or do you have somebody we can go through?
00:44:52 --> 00:44:55 I do have someone. I can definitely link the two of you, definitely.
00:44:56 --> 00:45:01 Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Send me that information. Absolutely.
00:45:02 --> 00:45:06 I'm sure Mr. Bailey will hear this show as well, because he's going to hear us talk about it.
00:45:07 --> 00:45:12 Okay. But that's something that I would love to see you be a part of.
00:45:12 --> 00:45:18 So I think you will blow the place away down there. We had an all-female group
00:45:18 --> 00:45:21 that came there. It was this past summer.
00:45:21 --> 00:45:24 And, man, that's all everybody was talking about was this all-female band that
00:45:24 --> 00:45:27 came through, and they tore it up there, man. Okay.
00:45:28 --> 00:45:31 And where were they from, Leonard? Weren't they from D.C.?
00:45:33 --> 00:45:36 I'm not sure. I didn't get a chance to see them. Okay. Okay.
00:45:36 --> 00:45:40 Okay. Yeah. Yeah. He's trying to say he was working. But anyway.
00:45:45 --> 00:45:52 But anyway, we want to thank you for coming on and hanging out with us.
00:45:52 --> 00:45:59 I know you're on to your next thing, but we definitely want to say thank you
00:45:59 --> 00:46:01 and definitely we'll be in touch.
00:46:01 --> 00:46:07 And, you know, we know that something big is about to happen for you and we can feel it.
00:46:07 --> 00:46:11 Oh, well, would you say, Leonard, you wanted to sing something on the way else?
00:46:11 --> 00:46:11 Did you say that through?
00:46:14 --> 00:46:22 Did you say that a duet a duet no we're not doing a duet get ready Dave,
00:46:23 --> 00:46:34 no no no calm down Dave always talks about he's a singer except on episodes that we have a singer,
00:46:35 --> 00:46:40 I am not singing on it look I'm trying to keep the ratings up on our show you
00:46:40 --> 00:46:44 gotta say Dave you gotta say you're on vocal rest today that's all Vocal rest.
00:46:45 --> 00:46:49 I'm on vocal rest. Yeah, that's right. My vocal rest is not working at the moment.
00:46:50 --> 00:46:55 I can only talk at the moment. I can only talk. You know, but... Here, Dave.
00:46:55 --> 00:46:59 Would you like to sing something? Would you like to sing something for us? Hmm?
00:47:00 --> 00:47:02 I'm not repeating anything after you. Anyway.
00:47:05 --> 00:47:09 Would you like to sing something for us on the way out? Oh, me?
00:47:10 --> 00:47:14 Oh, is that... Is that too impromptu?
00:47:15 --> 00:47:18 Is that too impromptu? Is that too impromptu? No.
00:47:19 --> 00:47:26 No. So, okay. So, my EP, Upside of Life, like I said, the title track, features Najee.
00:47:27 --> 00:47:31 You guys know the smooth jazz saxophonist and flatest Najee is featured on that.
00:47:31 --> 00:47:37 It's a nice, uplifting tune. It's an empowering tune. So, I can give you a little taste of that.
00:47:37 --> 00:47:44 Okay. Okay. All right. All right. Step by step, round by round,
00:47:45 --> 00:47:48 I'm reaching up to higher ground.
00:47:48 --> 00:47:52 See, there is no negativity.
00:47:52 --> 00:47:55 I'll take care of my responsibilities.
00:47:56 --> 00:48:02 I can see a rainbow in the sky. I'm reaching out for.

00:48:28 --> 00:48:31 Anyway I think You know, I think I've heard that,
00:48:32 --> 00:48:38 From the think of it yeah it's a nice it's a nice uplifting tune it's a very
00:48:38 --> 00:48:41 uplifting tune so it's a very yeah,
00:48:41 --> 00:48:46 alright well it's become a fan favorite yeah well,
00:48:47 --> 00:48:53 I'm a fan already anyway so but I really I really want to say thank you again
00:48:53 --> 00:48:57 I know Leonard I'm sure Leonard wants to say the same thing,
00:48:58 --> 00:49:05 but we will be looking forward we will be looking forward to seeing your name
00:49:05 --> 00:49:10 in bigger lights than that it already is and just remember us when when we need
00:49:10 --> 00:49:15 those front stage when we need those backstage passes to get in your shoes okay all right.
00:49:19 --> 00:49:25 All right but anyway but we you know we either i'll more likely you're here
00:49:25 --> 00:49:29 for me because leonard don't leonard don't i'm the guy that always makes all
00:49:29 --> 00:49:31 the contacts so but i'll get in touch with you,
00:49:31 --> 00:49:36 and we'll see about maybe trying to get you here next summer, see what happens.
00:49:36 --> 00:49:39 Thank you both. I appreciate that. Thank you so much.
00:49:39 --> 00:49:46 Thank you, and have a good evening. Ladies and gentlemen, and Lynette, thank you. Thank you.
00:49:46 --> 00:49:49 Thank you. All right. Take care.
00:49:52 --> 00:49:56 All right. That was great. That was great. We really appreciate Ms.
00:49:56 --> 00:49:57 Karen and Lynette coming on.
00:49:58 --> 00:50:02 We're going to go ahead and continue with our show. Got a couple of subjects
00:50:02 --> 00:50:07 that we want to talk to you guys about before we sign off. Let's see.
00:50:08 --> 00:50:14 Let's see. We got our first story. I thought this was interesting.
00:50:14 --> 00:50:18 Did you hear anything about this, by the way, Leonard, in the story that I'm about to talk about?
00:50:19 --> 00:50:22 No. okay all right so
00:50:22 --> 00:50:25 the story is i did
00:50:25 --> 00:50:30 see i did see when they were talking about this owens points finger at everyone
00:50:30 --> 00:50:37 it says i'm dying as donors trump white house accused of snubbing her at kirps
00:50:37 --> 00:50:43 memorial so this is about candace owens our favorite one of our favorite people
00:50:43 --> 00:50:44 to talk about all the time.
00:50:45 --> 00:50:52 So Candace Owens flips out after the memorial of snub, and it says, Poe thing.
00:50:53 --> 00:50:57 Candace Owens was not asked to speak at Charlie Kirk's memorial,
00:50:58 --> 00:51:00 and she didn't take it well.
00:51:00 --> 00:51:06 She went off on her show blaming Zionist donors, the White House and Kirk's
00:51:06 --> 00:51:08 widow, for keeping her off the list.
00:51:08 --> 00:51:15 The event was reportedly limited to just a few speakers, including Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.
00:51:15 --> 00:51:23 But Owens claimed that she was silenced because of her topics and political stance.
00:51:23 --> 00:51:26 She insists she wasn't upset.
00:51:27 --> 00:51:30 Then she added she skipped the event entirely.
00:51:31 --> 00:51:40 Her alternative plan, listen to power in my headphones and go see, yay, Kanye West.
00:51:42 --> 00:51:46 Her teary tribute took a strange turn right after,
00:51:47 --> 00:51:51 Kirk's passing, Owens posted a tearful video tribute.
00:51:51 --> 00:51:58 She called him her best friend, brother, brother and a visionary.
00:51:59 --> 00:52:04 Wait, before I finish this, you know how many people I have heard say,
00:52:04 --> 00:52:08 I didn't know who Charlie Kirk was before this happened? I didn't.
00:52:09 --> 00:52:14 Me either, Leonard. And you and I have been doing this show for almost five
00:52:14 --> 00:52:17 years now, and his name has never come up.
00:52:17 --> 00:52:24 I will say, I'm sure I've seen him, but you see people talking crazy and you
00:52:24 --> 00:52:25 just kind of keep scrolling.
00:52:26 --> 00:52:31 Yeah. I don't doubt that I've seen him, but I definitely have not seen him enough to know who he was.
00:52:32 --> 00:52:36 How about that? How about that? But all of a sudden, everybody's making this
00:52:36 --> 00:52:38 guy to be this bigger-than-life character.
00:52:40 --> 00:52:45 She said, there is no Candace without Charlie.
00:52:46 --> 00:52:52 Okay. She recalled dancing backstage to Kanye, going on road trips,
00:52:52 --> 00:52:54 and watching him grow spiritually.
00:52:55 --> 00:53:02 She also claimed he had been attending mass and praying the rosary.
00:53:02 --> 00:53:05 But heartfelt moments didn't last.
00:53:05 --> 00:53:11 Critics, including Kirk's pastor, Rob McCoy, pushed back on her statements.
00:53:12 --> 00:53:16 Some felt she was rewriting Kirk's beliefs to fit her own narrative.
00:53:16 --> 00:53:23 Owens pushes a conspiracy theory with no proof days after the tribute.
00:53:24 --> 00:53:31 Owens changed her tone. She suggested that Kirk's death wasn't just a tragedy. It was very suspicious.
00:53:32 --> 00:53:38 On her show, she claimed billionaire Bill Ackman threatened Kirk at the Hamptons
00:53:38 --> 00:53:44 event. According to Owens, Ackman was upset with Kirk hosting speakers like
00:53:44 --> 00:53:47 Tucker Carlson, who had criticized Israel.
00:53:48 --> 00:53:54 She said Kirk felt blackmailed and pressured by Zionist forces around Trump.
00:53:55 --> 00:54:01 Users on X slammed her as unhinged, desperate, and deranged.
00:54:01 --> 00:54:05 Many accused her of using Kirk's death to stay in the spotlight.
00:54:05 --> 00:54:11 One viral comment said, you're turning this into your little conspiracy circus
00:54:11 --> 00:54:13 to keep yourself relevant.
00:54:13 --> 00:54:17 Another added, she's struggling to keep her story straight.
00:54:17 --> 00:54:23 Some even brought up postpartum stress, suggesting her behavior was a rear flag.
00:54:24 --> 00:54:32 Laura Loomer said that Owens was totally irredeemable and predicted that she
00:54:32 --> 00:54:34 be banned from the memorial.
00:54:34 --> 00:54:42 This blog revealed deepest cracks in the MAGA movement once I started with,
00:54:43 --> 00:54:50 T. Pussa had quietly parted ways with the group over her increasingly controversial
00:54:50 --> 00:54:53 views. I'm going to stop right there.
00:54:53 --> 00:54:58 So Candace Owens has always been like a lightning rod.
00:54:59 --> 00:55:05 And she's good for gaslighting and starting controversial things and whatever.
00:55:06 --> 00:55:09 But you know it seems to
00:55:09 --> 00:55:12 me like i mean i don't remember ever
00:55:12 --> 00:55:15 hearing the i mean i don't listen
00:55:15 --> 00:55:17 to a lot of stuff she says because all of it
00:55:17 --> 00:55:22 sounds crazy to me but i don't remember ever hearing her mention charlie kirk's
00:55:22 --> 00:55:28 name but then if she did maybe i didn't know who he was i didn't pay any attention
00:55:28 --> 00:55:35 to it so to go through all of this and be so upset and and everything about of what happened.
00:55:37 --> 00:55:45 You know, is she using this to put herself in the spotlight and to capitalize
00:55:45 --> 00:55:47 off of this? What do you think?
00:55:47 --> 00:55:50 So personally, I think it's the exact opposite.
00:55:51 --> 00:55:57 I think, and this is just my opinion, I think she really was good friends with Charlie Kirk.
00:55:59 --> 00:56:03 And, you know, they may not have agreed on everything, but they were good friends.
00:56:04 --> 00:56:11 When he passed away of course she's claiming friendship but because she's controversial
00:56:11 --> 00:56:16 I feel like they are trying to give her the boot and I mean we won't we won't
00:56:16 --> 00:56:19 even talk about she's a black woman like you know black woman can only last
00:56:19 --> 00:56:23 in that atmosphere for so long as Omarosa,
00:56:23 --> 00:56:27 yeah so I mean that's what I think it is because I've seen a lot like now I've
00:56:27 --> 00:56:32 just seen a lot of where going back and back, it looks like Charlie's,
00:56:32 --> 00:56:35 Kirk's only black friend was Candace Owens.
00:56:35 --> 00:56:39 You know, like I've seen them on a couple of like pictures and videos that were old.
00:56:40 --> 00:56:44 So, you know, I don't know. It's very weird.
00:56:45 --> 00:56:49 And, you know, one thing about Candace, and I recognize it lately,
00:56:50 --> 00:56:55 she'll say how she feels no matter who she offends, whether she's offended.
00:56:55 --> 00:57:01 Now, she's going to offend, let's say, the Democrats and the left more.
00:57:02 --> 00:57:06 But, I mean, she said some stuff that offended some of these right wing people lately.
00:57:06 --> 00:57:11 So, you know, I think she's kind of, you know, I mean, I guess she's speaking her truth.
00:57:11 --> 00:57:16 But some of these right wing slash President Trump White House people aren't liking it.
00:57:16 --> 00:57:21 And now what I am thinking is, and I mean, I have no idea and I don't even know
00:57:21 --> 00:57:24 how to prove it. How well did J.D. Vance know Charlie Kirk?
00:57:25 --> 00:57:31 I know. That's interesting to me because I was watching something on TV recently
00:57:31 --> 00:57:33 and they were talking to Vance about him.
00:57:34 --> 00:57:39 And Vance was giving like one or two word answers to the questions.
00:57:39 --> 00:57:44 And I was like, huh, well, he must not have known him that well. Right.
00:57:45 --> 00:57:52 You know, but then, you know, how often did you see Charlie Kirk with President
00:57:52 --> 00:57:54 Trump? Yeah, I don't know.
00:57:55 --> 00:58:02 Yeah. I mean, you know, I mean, the videos that's out there on him and the social
00:58:02 --> 00:58:07 media presence that he seemed to have, you didn't really see a lot of interacting
00:58:07 --> 00:58:10 with Vance and Trump, you know.
00:58:11 --> 00:58:15 I don't know the whole thing was just the whole dynamic around everything and
00:58:15 --> 00:58:20 then Candace Owen saying that this was her best you know her best friend or
00:58:20 --> 00:58:24 her brother and all of this stuff and I'm just like but you.
00:58:25 --> 00:58:31 Did he go to the Kanye concert with you I mean come on now you know I don't
00:58:31 --> 00:58:37 know it's just interesting to me that all what's come about ever since this
00:58:37 --> 00:58:40 has happened is of course And we have to say,
00:58:40 --> 00:58:42 you know, it's a sad thing that, you know,
00:58:43 --> 00:58:46 Charlie, you know, Charlie Kirk was gunned down the way that he was.
00:58:46 --> 00:58:52 But, you know, but it's just interesting how all of this has come about,
00:58:53 --> 00:58:57 you know, after his death, you know, and, you know, I mean, President Trump
00:58:57 --> 00:59:00 is talking about doing a memorial for him and all of this stuff.
00:59:00 --> 00:59:06 And I'm just like, you know, flags, the flags were flown half mass on the day
00:59:06 --> 00:59:11 that there was the school shooting, you know, and 9-11, right?
00:59:12 --> 00:59:15 I mean, that was the same time, right? Yeah. So, I don't know.
00:59:17 --> 00:59:22 The world is interesting right now. It really is. It's a very interesting place right now.
00:59:22 --> 00:59:26 But I just wanted to mention that story because I saw her name,
00:59:26 --> 00:59:30 you know, Candace Owens manages to get her name out there somehow, you know. up, bro.
00:59:32 --> 00:59:36 But we're going to move on to our next story. And I thought this was a great
00:59:36 --> 00:59:40 story, you know, very interesting story as well.
00:59:41 --> 00:59:46 Says Kache Fields, an African-American officer with Metro Transit,
00:59:47 --> 00:59:55 uses her photographic memory to track down suspects across Washington, D.C.
00:59:56 --> 00:59:58 For seven years.
01:00:00 --> 01:00:03 I'm sorry, hold on for one moment. Yes, for seven years.
01:00:04 --> 01:00:10 And she helped. She has helped close major cases by recalling faces with striking accuracy.
01:00:10 --> 01:00:15 Fields who grew up in the southeast D.C. serve as a BOLO specialist,
01:00:16 --> 01:00:18 short for be on the lookout.
01:00:19 --> 01:00:22 Did you know that was did you know that was actually what
01:00:22 --> 01:00:24 that meant no you know what i
01:00:24 --> 01:00:27 didn't either i i kept saying bolo bolo i kept always
01:00:27 --> 01:00:30 trying to figure it out i would i wouldn't go look it up
01:00:30 --> 01:00:33 because i didn't i thought it was going to be something you know simple
01:00:33 --> 01:00:36 right but i never knew that's what it stood for be
01:00:36 --> 01:00:40 on the lookout that is too funny each ship
01:00:40 --> 01:00:44 begins with her reviewing emails containing photos
01:00:44 --> 01:00:47 of wanted individuals she commits them.
01:00:47 --> 01:00:55 Those faces to her memory that scans the crowd as she's as she patrolled transit
01:00:55 --> 01:01:05 stations monday september 22nd i basically placed them in my head and when i'm on patrol,
01:01:06 --> 01:01:13 At my stations, that's when I see the person and that Bolo photograph comes
01:01:13 --> 01:01:15 to the front of my head, she said.
01:01:16 --> 01:01:24 This ability has helped stop cases ranging from robberies to homicides and rape cases.
01:01:24 --> 01:01:31 She has assisted in thousands of investigations alongside Metro Transit and
01:01:31 --> 01:01:36 Metropolitan Police, Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Marshal Service.
01:01:36 --> 01:01:43 Her talent was first recognized in 2018 by a mentor, Detective Barlow,
01:01:43 --> 01:01:47 who noticed her sharp memory during a robbery case.
01:01:48 --> 01:01:56 Since then, Fields has stopped thousands of suspects, including a record Ebola arrest in a single day.
01:01:56 --> 01:01:59 Oh, wow. You could. I know that's crazy, right?
01:01:59 --> 01:02:03 My superpower. You could change. Yeah, that's a superpower right there.
01:02:03 --> 01:02:07 You can change your outfit, but you can't change your face, he said.
01:02:08 --> 01:02:17 That mindset allows her to identify suspects even when they try to disguise themselves.
01:02:17 --> 01:02:21 Despite Metro's extensive network of cameras and technology,
01:02:22 --> 01:02:25 Phil relies on mental images she carries.
01:02:25 --> 01:02:33 She believes her ability comes with a duty not to protect the community,
01:02:33 --> 01:02:36 but also to treat every suspect with dignity.
01:02:37 --> 01:02:42 I want the bad guys and the bad girls to know I will find you.
01:02:42 --> 01:02:56 But I will also still treat you with respect as well as a human. she said.
01:02:56 --> 01:03:02 Now, can you imagine, that almost is, believe it or not, a superpower.
01:03:02 --> 01:03:03 I mean, if you think about it.
01:03:04 --> 01:03:07 And if she's as accurate as they're saying she is.
01:03:08 --> 01:03:13 Wow, that's crazy. Now, I'm wondering if there's been any mistaken identity.
01:03:14 --> 01:03:19 But, I mean, but apparently she's helped to solve a lot of cases.
01:03:20 --> 01:03:25 But then, so I wonder if she says, well, that's him or that's her.
01:03:25 --> 01:03:31 And they pick that person up saying, oh, okay, well, if Ms.
01:03:31 --> 01:03:34 Fields says that's her or him, then we got to say that's her or him.
01:03:35 --> 01:03:40 And, you know, could she be wrong with her? who knows you know but but it's
01:03:40 --> 01:03:45 a great thing to know that she has that kind of photographic memory i i met
01:03:45 --> 01:03:49 one person in my life that had photographic memory and it was scary because they,
01:03:50 --> 01:03:54 they didn't think if they saw something once it
01:03:54 --> 01:03:57 stayed in their head you know and they would you could
01:03:57 --> 01:04:00 ask them two weeks later and they still would have clear memory
01:04:00 --> 01:04:03 of what what they saw you can ask them a year later they
01:04:03 --> 01:04:06 still know what they saw so so you know
01:04:06 --> 01:04:09 that's a gift that is definitely a gift and that's something
01:04:09 --> 01:04:15 to have and for her to be able to spot somebody even if they try to throw off
01:04:15 --> 01:04:22 by you know changing their face or wearing you know wigs and stuff like that
01:04:22 --> 01:04:27 you know to be able to understand you know to be able to check their facial
01:04:27 --> 01:04:29 structure out and be able to keep that in their head.
01:04:29 --> 01:04:33 That's really interesting. That is really a superpower. Like I said,
01:04:33 --> 01:04:36 that is really a superpower. What's your thoughts on it?
01:04:36 --> 01:04:39 Well, I mean, I agree. I mean, I think it's just one of those,
01:04:39 --> 01:04:42 everyone has a skill and she definitely honed hers.
01:04:43 --> 01:04:46 Yeah, definitely. She definitely has made it work for her.
01:04:47 --> 01:04:52 And I know those people down there in DC, we should have asked Karen if she ever heard of her.
01:04:52 --> 01:04:56 That's down in her area so you know so but
01:04:56 --> 01:04:59 i just thought that was a great story and you know so
01:04:59 --> 01:05:02 there are some people walking this earth that really do have power
01:05:02 --> 01:05:05 so you know all we need is to put a cape
01:05:05 --> 01:05:11 on her or something in or call her super detective or who knows so but i just
01:05:11 --> 01:05:16 thought uh we give miss fields miss cachet fields a shout out for all that she
01:05:16 --> 01:05:23 does in law enforcement so and the fact that she says that she does it with respect and so forth,
01:05:23 --> 01:05:27 that's a good thing also because we see too many videos of,
01:05:27 --> 01:05:31 of the police not respecting people, you know? So, yeah, definitely.
01:05:32 --> 01:05:37 So I just wanted to give a shout out there. Okay. Which, uh, you got a story for us?
01:05:37 --> 01:05:40 Yeah. So they are our last story. And I thought this was interesting.
01:05:40 --> 01:05:44 I just heard about this yesterday and, you know, I think it's still developing.
01:05:45 --> 01:05:48 You're familiar with Publix, right? Super, supermarket. Okay.
01:05:49 --> 01:05:57 And the city of Jacksonville, they have a large event, not this weekend,
01:05:57 --> 01:05:58 but I think next weekend.
01:05:58 --> 01:06:02 And the event is called, oh no, I'm sorry, actually it's this weekend.
01:06:03 --> 01:06:05 It's called the Black Book Bash.
01:06:06 --> 01:06:15 And from videos I saw on TikTok and Instagram, they had reached out to Publix to be a sponsor.
01:06:16 --> 01:06:24 And Publix said, not only will we sponsor, but we want to be the exclusive sponsor.
01:06:24 --> 01:06:31 Basically meaning, you know, we are going to basically pay enough that you don't
01:06:31 --> 01:06:32 have any other sponsors.
01:06:32 --> 01:06:34 We will be the only sponsor for the event.
01:06:35 --> 01:06:37 So of course, you know, they were okay with that.
01:06:38 --> 01:06:44 And then they said that about a week before the event, so I think it was like last Friday.
01:06:44 --> 01:06:53 So the event is this coming weekend, Publix backs out of being a sponsor of the event.
01:06:53 --> 01:06:59 They're now saying that they never agreed to sponsor the event in the first
01:06:59 --> 01:07:01 place. So they didn't get it in writing?
01:07:02 --> 01:07:09 So it appears that they did not get it in writing.
01:07:09 --> 01:07:12 I'm not sure if they, you know, was like a handshake
01:07:12 --> 01:07:21 thing if it was like an email type thing but basically public says i regret
01:07:21 --> 01:07:27 to inform you that publics is no longer able to offer sponsorship for the foreseeable
01:07:27 --> 01:07:30 future in this volatile climate.
01:07:31 --> 01:07:35 We have pulled all sponsorships for the foreseeable future.
01:07:35 --> 01:07:44 As a result, we are rescinding the existing offer to sponsor Black Book Bash.
01:07:45 --> 01:07:48 So, I mean, with that said, it sounds like they had committed,
01:07:48 --> 01:07:51 you know, you can't rescind something you didn't commit.
01:07:51 --> 01:07:54 Yeah, well, I would especially use that word rescind, you know,
01:07:55 --> 01:07:57 that something happened.
01:07:57 --> 01:08:04 Yeah. Now, Publix is funny. Publix is saying that that email was not from them.
01:08:04 --> 01:08:11 And the company's spokesperson said, we can confirm definitively that this communication
01:08:11 --> 01:08:13 was never sent by Publix.
01:08:13 --> 01:08:17 So the organizers are saying, despite the sponsorship confusion,
01:08:17 --> 01:08:23 they are focused on ensuring that the Black Book Bash is a success.
01:08:23 --> 01:08:29 The event celebrates literacy and amplifies the voices of black authors across the genres.
01:08:29 --> 01:08:35 And of course it's scheduled to take place this weekend on their website for
01:08:35 --> 01:08:38 the black book bash. They do have a donate link.
01:08:38 --> 01:08:42 So, you know, any of our listeners who hears it, they can donate,
01:08:42 --> 01:08:46 but you know, Dave, overall, this is just very confusing. And I do agree.
01:08:46 --> 01:08:51 I'm not sure what they had in writing, what was oral, what was kind of like,
01:08:51 --> 01:08:59 you know, the old time handshake, but you know, So, I mean, it is definitely, you know,
01:08:59 --> 01:09:03 very weird what's happening is a little bit of he say, she say.
01:09:04 --> 01:09:09 So I'm not sure what the deal is, but long story short, a lot of people are mad at Publix.
01:09:09 --> 01:09:14 A lot of people are talking about boycotting Publix and the Black Book Bash
01:09:14 --> 01:09:16 is going to proceed as they were.
01:09:16 --> 01:09:21 You know, they are they're not, you know, going crazy over asking for donations,
01:09:21 --> 01:09:26 but, you know, they definitely welcome all donations and any financial support
01:09:26 --> 01:09:29 as well as looking for attendees to come and, you know,
01:09:29 --> 01:09:34 get and get a great experience learning about, you know, the book industry and
01:09:34 --> 01:09:35 learning from black authors.
01:09:37 --> 01:09:43 Question. So with that being said, with Publix coming out with that statement
01:09:43 --> 01:09:45 saying that they didn't send the email,
01:09:46 --> 01:09:52 so they didn't, why wouldn't they just say, okay, we're going to go ahead and sponsor the event?
01:09:53 --> 01:09:57 I don't know. You know, Dave, I almost feel like we just got to wait a couple
01:09:57 --> 01:10:01 of days and see how this transpires because,
01:10:02 --> 01:10:05 you know, I mean, of course we haven't seen the email either
01:10:05 --> 01:10:08 but if it says you know d coker
01:10:08 --> 01:10:11 at publix.com in my mind
01:10:11 --> 01:10:14 i'm thinking okay like this is legit you know
01:10:14 --> 01:10:19 i i'm i'm not sure there's definitely some confusion and there's definitely
01:10:19 --> 01:10:25 some getting to the bottom of it in in this situation yeah because it sounds
01:10:25 --> 01:10:31 like there's a lot going on there and and seem like there should be some lawyers involved definitely,
01:10:32 --> 01:10:38 And I know Publix is a very big down south and, you know, you would think that
01:10:38 --> 01:10:44 they would be able to, even if they were not going to be the main sponsor,
01:10:45 --> 01:10:50 that they would donate, you know, a nice piece of change considering everything that's happened.
01:10:51 --> 01:10:55 You know, yeah. But the one thing I can say, and you've probably experienced
01:10:55 --> 01:11:00 it, too, you know, doing an event and you'll reach out to people and people
01:11:00 --> 01:11:01 will give you a verbal commitment.
01:11:02 --> 01:11:07 Like maybe just buying tickets. Hey, I'm going to buy 20 tickets.
01:11:07 --> 01:11:09 And then it'd be before the event.
01:11:10 --> 01:11:15 And now they're singing a different tune, talking about the car broke down and,
01:11:15 --> 01:11:20 you know, the AC went out in the house. So that kind of sounds like what this
01:11:20 --> 01:11:22 was. But to be honest, I'm just not sure.
01:11:23 --> 01:11:27 That could be and that could be a PR nightmare for publics.
01:11:27 --> 01:11:34 You know, if if it does end up becoming a legal matter, you know,
01:11:34 --> 01:11:38 they're very popular with the blacks down south.
01:11:38 --> 01:11:41 I know a lot of people shop at those stores down there.
01:11:42 --> 01:11:45 You know, I don't know. you don't want to if
01:11:45 --> 01:11:48 it's one thing you don't want to do these days it's upset
01:11:48 --> 01:11:51 the public because they will go online
01:11:51 --> 01:11:55 and just mess you up you know
01:11:55 --> 01:11:58 you know you know you know the
01:11:58 --> 01:12:01 favorite line is i went straight to the comment section you
01:12:01 --> 01:12:06 know so you know that's what people do they go straight to the comment you know
01:12:06 --> 01:12:11 and all it takes is for somebody to start a chain saying this is what public
01:12:11 --> 01:12:18 did how do you feel about it and that's it you do not want the public giving public.
01:12:20 --> 01:12:26 Any of their negative vibes but hopefully,
01:12:27 --> 01:12:34 if public did commit to doing sponsorship and then pulled out hopefully they'll
01:12:34 --> 01:12:41 do right by them and help them out this weekend in some type of way you know so let's hope so,
01:12:42 --> 01:12:46 you know because you know otherwise we'll be doing the follow up to this story,
01:12:47 --> 01:12:49 so yeah so,
01:12:50 --> 01:12:56 All right. Well, that brings us to Leonard's favorite part of the show, which is Dave's Corner.
01:12:57 --> 01:13:02 And this is the part of the show where we usually ask some type of philosophical
01:13:02 --> 01:13:05 question or a fun question or whatever the case may be.
01:13:06 --> 01:13:11 And I have a question for you today, Leonard, and that is this.
01:13:11 --> 01:13:18 If you had a DeLorean time machine like that in Back to the Future,
01:13:18 --> 01:13:28 what three moments would you go back to as yourself to witness all over again in the past?
01:13:29 --> 01:13:36 So I think my three moments would be, one, I probably go back to my high school
01:13:36 --> 01:13:39 state swimming championships, 1993,
01:13:40 --> 01:13:46 you know, that ever there's my Al Bundy moment to, you know, watch some of that.
01:13:47 --> 01:13:49 My second one I would love to
01:13:49 --> 01:13:52 I always love like when my kids were little little
01:13:52 --> 01:13:55 and I take them over to my mom's house and
01:13:55 --> 01:13:58 just how excited she was because you know some moms who just be super excited
01:13:58 --> 01:14:03 to have grandchildren you know she she was definitely one like those kids could
01:14:03 --> 01:14:10 do no wrong at grandma's house that's for sure my third one would probably be
01:14:10 --> 01:14:13 going back to maybe our second Delaware Black Awards.
01:14:14 --> 01:14:18 Maybe, or second or third, one of them, just to kind of like re-see it.
01:14:19 --> 01:14:22 The second one was the first one I went to. Yeah.
01:14:25 --> 01:14:32 That would be the perfect one for you to go back to because that's when you met David Colbert.
01:14:33 --> 01:14:35 There you go. There you go.
01:14:37 --> 01:14:40 But Dave, what about you? You had a DeLorean time machine.
01:14:41 --> 01:14:47 What three moments would you go back to as yourself to witness over all again?
01:14:49 --> 01:14:56 First one, it's funny. When you said one, you said one, I started hearing that song in my head.
01:14:57 --> 01:14:59 That Karen Lynette did. Oh, yeah.
01:15:01 --> 01:15:04 Now I can't get it out of my head. When people start counting,
01:15:04 --> 01:15:08 it pops in my head. The first one would be the birth of all my children.
01:15:09 --> 01:15:16 Okay. okay just watching them come into this world that's a special moment witness
01:15:16 --> 01:15:25 you know and yeah i would definitely go back to see each one of those each one of them born okay,
01:15:26 --> 01:15:32 the second thing believe it or not might be a little odd but is this something
01:15:32 --> 01:15:37 that i definitely would do if i had the opportunity to do that and that would
01:15:37 --> 01:15:40 be the week before my mother went into to the hospital.
01:15:42 --> 01:15:53 Why that week before it's because that was the last week that and i remember
01:15:53 --> 01:15:57 i had so many things going on at that time and i was kind of busy i did manage
01:15:57 --> 01:16:00 to spend a couple days with her that week but,
01:16:00 --> 01:16:05 knowing what knowing now that she would never come out the hospital,
01:16:06 --> 01:16:13 once she went there I would have been there all of that week trying to make
01:16:13 --> 01:16:16 sure that she was okay and maybe trying to,
01:16:17 --> 01:16:24 do some things in order to maybe see if there was some alternative to what we were about to do,
01:16:26 --> 01:16:32 the last thing was when I went to my very first concert,
01:16:32 --> 01:16:37 man that was an awesome thing man I remember going to, well,
01:16:37 --> 01:16:43 Gary, tell you, I was 16, 17 years old. Who was it? Jesus?
01:16:43 --> 01:16:45 Jesus who? David?
01:16:48 --> 01:16:54 So wrong, so wrong. It was, I went to see Earth, Wind, and Fire. Oh, wow.
01:16:55 --> 01:17:01 And see, people, for people that are older that, you know, this was like back
01:17:01 --> 01:17:05 during the 70s, Earth, Wind, and Fire used to open their show with magic.
01:17:05 --> 01:17:08 You know, they would appear out of nowhere.
01:17:09 --> 01:17:15 Doug Canning was a very popular magician back then. And he helped them with a lot of their shows.
01:17:16 --> 01:17:25 And the opening part was like this spaceship and they would disappear out of nowhere.
01:17:25 --> 01:17:28 It wasn't a spaceship, but they would disappear out of nowhere.
01:17:28 --> 01:17:31 I mean, in the ceiling. I mean, it was just the craziest thing,
01:17:32 --> 01:17:35 but, but that show was so crazy.
01:17:35 --> 01:17:40 And there was so many people and people just, and Earth, Wind & Fire had songs
01:17:40 --> 01:17:43 that you knew every word to, you know what I mean?
01:17:43 --> 01:17:47 It was very easy to sing along to their songs.
01:17:47 --> 01:17:52 When you're in a, when you're a teenager and you're in a crowd of all of these
01:17:52 --> 01:17:58 people and everybody singing this music and it's just a crazy, crazy atmosphere.
01:17:58 --> 01:18:03 It was really mind-blowing and it was the very first concert i ever went to too.
01:18:04 --> 01:18:07 Wow and to see all of this going on it was really
01:18:07 --> 01:18:09 great man so that was that was something i
01:18:09 --> 01:18:16 definitely would go back to see and witness all over again you know i would
01:18:16 --> 01:18:21 that's that's you know the marty mcfly effect where marty was watching himself
01:18:21 --> 01:18:25 and a lot of the stuff that went on when he went back in the future that's what
01:18:25 --> 01:18:28 i would like to do be able to watch myself in that moment.
01:18:29 --> 01:18:34 You know, just having, losing my mind, you know, because that's what we were
01:18:34 --> 01:18:36 doing. We were losing our mind. So, yeah.
01:18:37 --> 01:18:40 But that's my three things. Okay. So...
01:18:41 --> 01:18:48 Do you guys think your three things would be? If you can go back in your DeLorean
01:18:48 --> 01:18:57 and be able to go back to certain periods in your life and see them all over again,
01:18:58 --> 01:19:00 witness them all over again.
01:19:00 --> 01:19:05 So give us your thoughts on that and send us notes in reference to that.
01:19:05 --> 01:19:09 We would definitely like to hear that so well
01:19:09 --> 01:19:12 i guess that brings us to the end of our show
01:19:12 --> 01:19:15 once again we want to thank miss
01:19:15 --> 01:19:19 karen lynette for coming on and hanging out with us for a little bit it was
01:19:19 --> 01:19:25 truly a pleasure to have her on the show and we wish her the best of luck and
01:19:25 --> 01:19:30 hopefully maybe uh who knows maybe we'll see her next summer you know here in
01:19:30 --> 01:19:34 delaware so um we'll we'll we'll see if that can happen.
01:19:34 --> 01:19:37 Lynn, anything you want to add? No, no.
01:19:39 --> 01:19:44 What do you say? Good, before we go. Oh, no. I just want to say that it was
01:19:44 --> 01:19:45 a pleasure having Karen on the show.
01:19:46 --> 01:19:50 Her personality kind of matched exactly what I thought it would be,
01:19:50 --> 01:19:53 which is very refreshing. And I hope she goes far.
01:19:54 --> 01:19:57 And hopefully this is not the last we see of her. yeah
01:19:57 --> 01:20:00 that's right hopefully not i mean you
01:20:00 --> 01:20:06 know you know you know she talked about it doing doing when she was talking
01:20:06 --> 01:20:13 it's just amazing how how many talented people just you know you know they they
01:20:13 --> 01:20:17 don't get selected but then you see some of these other ones that can hardly sing,
01:20:18 --> 01:20:24 or hardly be perform or even act or whatever and you'd be like how did they
01:20:24 --> 01:20:28 get on right you know But, you know,
01:20:28 --> 01:20:33 but then then it could take a chance meeting like sitting there with Fulton
01:20:33 --> 01:20:40 and singing numbers that could blow you up, you know. So we'll see what happens.
01:20:40 --> 01:20:43 And we wish her all the best, you know. So.
01:20:44 --> 01:20:49 All right, folks. That's our show for tonight. We really appreciate you guys listening.
01:20:50 --> 01:20:53 And we will talk to you next week. Have a good night.
01:20:59 --> 01:21:03 Tune in next week, ladies and gentlemen, for another edition of News and Trends
01:21:03 --> 01:21:06 with your hosts, Dave and Lynn.
01:21:11 --> 01:21:26 Music.
