00:01:13 --> 00:01:19 He was a 47-year-old African-American who was a fourth and fifth grade teacher
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 at the Guggenheim Elementary School and a choir director at Trinity United Church
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 of Christ, a prominent church on the city's south side.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:33 He had attended Trinity since he was 12 years old, and he was known as the type

00:01:35 --> 00:01:40 fullest and someone who made a positive impression on those who met him.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:46 For over 20 years, he was the director of the choir and a deacon.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 His reverend, Jeremiah Wright, described him as one of those success stories.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 Now, Trinity wasn't just any church.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:00 It was a cornerstone of the community, a place of worship that played a significant
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 role in the lives of many black families in Chicago.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 Donald was known for his musical talents, warm personality, and dedication to his congregation.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 He was a charismatic leader, deeply loved by his friends, family,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 and the church community.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:22 But on December 23, 2007, Donald's life came to a tragic and abrupt end.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:28 Chicago police said Young was found in his apartment by his roommate at about 7.30 a.m.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:33 On Sunday, dead from multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one to the
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 head in what appeared to be a targeted killing.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:43 Young's roommate found the door to their apartment. On East 69th Street closed but unlocked.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:51 Leading investigators to believe that Donald knew his killer and possibly let them into his home.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 The timing of the murder was especially shocking, just two days before Christmas.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 Community was devastated, and so were Donald's friends and family.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:06 His mother, Norma Jean Young, was particularly vocal about her son's murder,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 expressing her frustration with the lack of progress in the investigation.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 From the very beginning, this case has been steeped in controversy,

00:03:17 --> 00:03:22 Let's take a look at the investigation itself. Police were immediately on the

00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 The lack of forced entry suggests that Donald may have known his killer intimately,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 leading to speculation that jealousy or betrayal could have been motives.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:39 Others still cling to the idea that Donald's death was politically motivated, a silencing of sorts.

00:07:52 --> 00:07:58 Here's what we do know for certain. Donald Young was a victim of a cold-blooded murder.
