00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome back to Black and Unsolved, True Crime Chronicles on the NBG Podcast Network.
00:00:06 --> 00:00:14 I'm your host, A.I. Jackson, here to shed light on cases that have been overlooked
00:00:14 --> 00:00:20 or forgotten, cases within our community that deserve justice and recognition.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:27 Today, we're exploring a case that has remained shrouded in mystery and unanswered
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 questions for nearly two decades.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:37 It's the 2007 murder of Donald Young, an elementary school teacher and beloved
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 choir director in Chicago.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:45 Though his name may not be widely known, his story is one that needs to be told.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:52 This case involves political intrigue, rumors, and possible connections to some
00:00:52 --> 00:00:55 of the most powerful figures in America.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:01 It's a tale with many threads, each one leading down a different path.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:06 But no matter where those threads take us, the fact remains that Donald Young's
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 murder is still unsolved.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 Donald Young was a respected member of his community in Chicago.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:19 He was a 47-year-old African-American who was a fourth and fifth grade teacher
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 at the Guggenheim Elementary School and a choir director at Trinity United Church
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 of Christ, a prominent church on the city's south side.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:33 He had attended Trinity since he was 12 years old, and he was known as the type
00:01:33 --> 00:01:35 of person to live every day to the
00:01:35 --> 00:01:40 fullest and someone who made a positive impression on those who met him.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:46 For over 20 years, he was the director of the choir and a deacon.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 His reverend, Jeremiah Wright, described him as one of those success stories.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 Now, Trinity wasn't just any church.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:00 It was a cornerstone of the community, a place of worship that played a significant
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 role in the lives of many black families in Chicago.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 Donald was known for his musical talents, warm personality, and dedication to his congregation.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 He was a charismatic leader, deeply loved by his friends, family,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 and the church community.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:22 But on December 23, 2007, Donald's life came to a tragic and abrupt end.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:28 Chicago police said Young was found in his apartment by his roommate at about 7.30 a.m.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:33 On Sunday, dead from multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one to the
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 head in what appeared to be a targeted killing.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:43 Young's roommate found the door to their apartment. On East 69th Street closed but unlocked.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:51 Leading investigators to believe that Donald knew his killer and possibly let them into his home.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 The timing of the murder was especially shocking, just two days before Christmas.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 Community was devastated, and so were Donald's friends and family.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:06 His mother, Norma Jean Young, was particularly vocal about her son's murder,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 expressing her frustration with the lack of progress in the investigation.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 From the very beginning, this case has been steeped in controversy,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 mystery, and speculation.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:22 Let's take a look at the investigation itself. Police were immediately on the
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 scene, and they treated the case as a homicide.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 Yet, despite the initial urgency, the investigation soon hit a wall.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 According to reports, evidence was collected, witnesses were interviewed,
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 and leads were followed.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:41 However, none of this resulted in any clear answers or suspects.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:48 One aspect of the case that has remained puzzling is the lack of any solid motive.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 Donald Young was well-liked and had no known enemies.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:57 His family and friends couldn't think of anyone who would want to harm him.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:01 But as we know, appearances can be deceiving.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:06 The case took a strange turn when political rumors started swirling around Donald's murder.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:13 These rumors were fueled by alleged ties between Donald and then-Senator Barack
00:04:13 --> 00:04:18 Obama, who both attended Trinity United Church of Christ, as Obama was in the
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 middle of his first presidential campaign.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:26 Some sources claimed that Donald had a personal connection with Obama and that
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 his death was somehow linked to this relationship.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:36 Let me be clear, there is no solid evidence to substantiate these claims.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:41 The political narrative surrounding this case has been driven largely by speculation,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:46 rumors, and the sensationalism of certain media outlets.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:52 However, it's an angle that cannot be ignored, as it has played a role in shaping
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 the public's perception of the case.
00:04:55 --> 00:05:01 But beyond the political speculation, we have to return to the core of this story.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:07 A man was murdered in his own home, and his killer has never been brought to justice.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:12 No matter what theories exist, the most important thing is finding the truth
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 about what happened to Donald Young.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:21 Over the years, frustration has grown within the community over the lack of progress in the case.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:28 Donald's family, particularly his mother, Norma Jean, has continued to advocate for justice.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 She has expressed disappointment in the Chicago Police Department's handling
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 of the investigation, feeling that it was never a priority.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:43 Some community members have echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the case
00:05:43 --> 00:05:48 didn't receive the attention it deserved because of Donald's sexual orientation.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:54 Donald was openly gay, a fact that may have played a role in the investigation,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 or rather, the lack of it.
00:05:56 --> 00:06:04 In many Black and LGBTQ plus communities, there's a perception that cases involving
00:06:04 --> 00:06:10 marginalized groups don't always receive the same level of attention or resources.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 This raises an important question.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 Did biases play a role in how the authorities approached this case?
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 Adding another layer of complexity is the role of the Church.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 Trinity United Church of Christ has been relatively quiet about Donald's murder,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 despite his prominent position within the congregation.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:39 Some speculate that the church's silence is connected to the political rumors
00:06:39 --> 00:06:45 mentioned earlier, while others believe it's a matter of privacy and respect for the family.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 But whatever the reason, the church's silence has left a void.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:54 For many, it feels like a crucial piece of the puzzle is missing,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 something that could shed light on the events leading up to Donald's death.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:03 Yet, the Church has remained steadfast in its refusal to comment,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:07 leaving both the media and the public in the dark.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:13 With so many unanswered questions, it's no surprise that theories have emerged over the years.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:18 Some believe that Donald's murder was a crime of passion, perhaps involving
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 a lover or someone close to him.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 The lack of forced entry suggests that Donald may have known his killer intimately,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 leading to speculation that jealousy or betrayal could have been motives.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:39 Others still cling to the idea that Donald's death was politically motivated, a silencing of sorts.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 But as I mentioned earlier, the political theory lacks concrete evidence.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:49 Without more information, it's impossible to say which, if any,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 of these theories holds water.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:58 Here's what we do know for certain. Donald Young was a victim of a cold-blooded murder.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:04 His life was cut short in a brutal and senseless act of violence.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 His family and friends have been left to mourn without answers,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:14 and his case remains unsolved despite numerous attempts to bring it to light.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:20 This is a case that desperately needs fresh eyes, new information,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:23 and, most importantly, justice.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:30 Donald's story is not just about a murder. It's about a community struggle for
00:08:30 --> 00:08:34 answers and the quest to bring closure to a grieving family.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:40 If there's one thing we can take away from this case, it's the importance of persistence.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:47 As long as there are people willing to seek justice for Donald, the case remains alive.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:54 The reality is that unsolved cases within the black community often face an uphill battle.
00:08:55 --> 00:09:02 We're up against systemic biases, limited resources, and a history of marginalization
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 that can make it difficult to get the answers we deserve.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:11 But that's why Black and Unsolved exists. To shine a light on these cases,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:16 to demand answers, and to bring justice to those who have been forgotten.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:22 If you have any information regarding the murder of Donald Young,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:26 please contact the Chicago Police Department or the appropriate authorities.
