00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Welcome back to Black and Unsolved, True Crime Chronicles on the NBG Podcast Network.
00:00:07 --> 00:00:14 In this episode, we delve into the unsolved mysteries that haunt the Black community,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:19 shining a light on cases that deserve more attention and demand justice.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:26 I'm your host, A.I. Jackson, and today we're talking about the tragic and mysterious
00:00:26 --> 00:00:33 death of Tyler Lewis, a college student whose life was cut short under puzzling circumstances.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:40 His case remains unsolved to Tyler's family, with more questions than answers,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:46 and like so many other black lives lost, it hasn't received the attention it deserves.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:52 Today, we'll go over the details of Tyler's life, the events leading up to his
00:00:52 --> 00:00:56 death, and the haunting questions that linger about what really happened to
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 him and the district attorney's involvement.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:07 Let's dive in. Tyler Lewis was a promising young student at the University at
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 Buffalo in New York, majoring in business administration.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:17 Friends and family described him as bright and full of potential.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:23 Tyler was 19 years old, a college freshman, and had his entire future ahead
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 of him. Like many students his age, Tyler was adjusting to college life,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:32 making new friends, and working hard toward his dreams.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:38 Tyler's family, especially his mother, believed in him deeply and were proud
00:01:38 --> 00:01:39 of his accomplishments.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 His future was filled with promise until one day, everything changed.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:53 On October 14, 2022, Tyler Lewis' life came to a tragic and abrupt end.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:58 The details of that day are murky, and the questions surrounding his death have
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 led to confusion, frustration, and heartache for his family.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 Tyler was last seen on the North Campus of the University at Buffalo.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 Were his friends, he was found near the Ellicott Complex, a student housing
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 area where he had sustained fatal stab wounds.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:25 Despite being on a crowded college campus, details about how and why this happened remain unclear.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:31 What we do know is that Tyler was rushed to the hospital after the attack.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:37 Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, Tyler succumbed to his injuries.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 His death was ruled a homicide, but here's where things get even more complicated.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:48 Authorities initially released vague statements regarding Tyler's death and
00:02:48 --> 00:02:52 little concrete information has been shared with the public since.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:59 According to reports, there was an altercation between Tyler and an unknown individual.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 However, no one has been arrested or charged in connection with his death.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:08 The investigation into Tyler's death has been slow, to say the least.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 As we've seen in far too many cases involving black victims,
00:03:14 --> 00:03:20 law enforcement's efforts seem inconsistent and transparency is lacking.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 Buffalo police had said they were working diligently on the case,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 but despite their assurances, Tyler's family has grown increasingly frustrated
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 with the pace and direction of the investigation.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:38 Even more alarming is that as of this recording, no one has been held accountable for his death.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:43 There are no suspects, no persons of interest publicly named,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 and no arrests have been made.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 Let's break that down for a second.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:53 Tyler was killed on a busy college campus in an area where students come and go constantly.
00:03:54 --> 00:04:00 How does someone get stabbed and there's no footage, no witnesses, no clear leads.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:06 There are a lot of gaps in the official narrative, and those gaps are only adding to the frustration.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:12 Tyler's mother, understandably devastated, has been vocal about the lack of
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 communication from law enforcement.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:20 She's raised concerns that Tyler's case isn't being treated with the urgency it deserves.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:27 She has called for more information, for the truth about what happened to her son to come to light.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 But so far, her pleas have gone unanswered.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 This lack of transparency raises an uncomfortable question.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 If Tyler were not a young black man, would his case have been handled differently?
00:04:39 --> 00:04:45 Sadly, we've seen this pattern before. Now, let's talk about the latest information
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 surrounding Tyler's death.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:53 The district attorney, John Flynn, is saying the murder of Tyler Lewis is closed,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:57 even though there were no arrests made when Tyler was killed.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:02 Flynn says that Tyler and others had been involved in a drug deal that went wrong.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:08 The suspect, who is said to be a white man between the age of 19 and 22,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:14 stabbed Tyler in the chest in a car after Tyler presented $1 in counterfeit
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 money and punched the accused stabber.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 Tyler was then left bleeding on the grounds of the University of Buffalo campus.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:27 The suspected individuals involved got lawyers, and the stabber cleaned the
00:05:27 --> 00:05:33 inside of his bloody car and handed it to police, but the accused stabber was not arrested.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:38 District Attorney Flynn provided an update on Friday, March 10, 2023,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:43 regarding the multi-agency investigation into the tragic death of Tyler Lewis,
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 with a grand jury concluding that no charges will be filed in the case.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:55 It's unsure whether that student, whose name was never provided to Tyler's family,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 has been expelled or left on their own terms.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:03 Meanwhile, a mother is left grieving the loss of her only child.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:08 What's particularly concerning about this case is how it reflects a broader
00:06:08 --> 00:06:12 issue we've seen in the handling of black victims in the criminal justice system.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:18 Far too often, black men and women who lose their lives under mysterious circumstances
00:06:18 --> 00:06:24 do not receive the same attention, resources, or dedication in investigations
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 compared to their white counterpart.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:32 Tyler's case is beginning to feel like another tragic example of this inequality.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 For Tyler's family, the pain of
00:06:35 --> 00:06:40 losing a loved one in such a violent and unresolved way is unimaginable.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:45 His mother has expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the lack of justice in the case.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:50 Not only has she lost her son, but she's also had to deal with the additional
00:06:50 --> 00:06:54 burden of fighting for justice in a system that seems unresponsive.
00:06:55 --> 00:07:00 The black community in Buffalo and beyond has also rallied around Tyler's family.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:06 They're calling for justice, demanding transparency to unsealed documents,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:13 revealing the killer's identity and parties involved as they try to keep Tyler's name in the spotlight.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:20 But as time passes, without answers, there's a real fear that Tyler's case could
00:07:20 --> 00:07:26 slip through the cracks and become yet another unsolved tragedy in the Black community.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 This is why we need to continue telling Tyler's story.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:37 His death is not just a personal loss for his family, but a reflection of a
00:07:37 --> 00:07:43 broader issue of how Black lives are valued or undervalued in our society.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:51 Tyler's case reminds me of other unsolved cases we've covered here on Black and Unsolved.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:56 Cases like Kendrick Johnson, who was found dead in a rolled-up gym mat at his
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 high school, or Meetress Richardson,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:03 who we will be covering next week, whose body was found in a remote canyon months
00:08:03 --> 00:08:07 after she was released from a sheriff's station without her belongings.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:13 These cases, and many others, remain unsolved, with families still searching for justice.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:20 There's a pattern of neglect when it comes to black victims of violent crimes.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:25 Whether it's a lack of media coverage or insufficient police resources,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:29 the message seems to be that these lives don't matter as much.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:34 But we're here to say that they do. Tyler's life mattered.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 Kendrick's life mattered.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:44 Mitrissa's life mattered. And we won't stop telling their stories until justice is served.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:52 As we wrap up this episode, I want to remind you that Tyler Lewis' case is still
00:08:52 --> 00:08:57 unsolved, as his family still demands to receive the name of the accused.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:03 If you know anything about Tyler's death, or if you were in the area at the
00:09:03 --> 00:09:07 time and may have seen something, we encourage you to come forward.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:14 Someone out there knows who stabbed Tyler and it's time to bring that information to light.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:20 We also need to keep the pressure on law enforcement to take this case seriously
00:09:20 --> 00:09:24 and prioritize providing all available information for Tyler.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 His family shouldn't have to fight this battle alone.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:33 And be denied pertinent information. Let's continue to raise awareness about
00:09:33 --> 00:09:38 Tyler's case and all the other unsolved cases that deserve our attention.
