00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 that I am not 20 years old. I am not 30
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 years old. I am not 40 years old. I'm in
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 my 50s going into my 60s. And I am still
00:02:18 --> 00:02:22 climbing. I'm still motivated to to, you
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 know, capture my dreams and go after my
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 dreams. And I want to make sure that you
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 know that you can do the same thing.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 Yes, it gets hard. Yes, it's it's a
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 little different now. Responsibilities
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 are different, but it's not impossible.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:36 So, I just want to share some things
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 that I hope that would help you continue
00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 on with your dreams, especially maybe
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 you just started. Maybe you're just
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 wanting to start your music career or
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 your acting career or whatever career.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:51 Cuz this could also be for It doesn't
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 have to necessarily be for people in the
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 entertainment industry. This could be
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 for someone just wanting to start a new
00:02:56 --> 00:02:58 career in general and maybe some of
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 these um tips or you know can help you.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 So I'm going to have to read these
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 things because because if I don't we'll
00:03:07 --> 00:03:10 be talking to next Tuesday. So pardon me
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 for looking down. So the first thing
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 that I want to make sure that you
00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 understand that you are not late. You're
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 not too late. You're just seasoned right
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 now. You know, you've lived and you've
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 loved and you've healed, you've had
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 heartbreak, just you have so much
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 experience. So
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 all of that
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 [music]
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 life experience shows up in your
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 artistry. So things that you knew when
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 you were 20 are not the same things that
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 you know now. So you can come from a
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 different place when you're acting or
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 when you um when you're songwriting or
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 even when you're performing, if you if
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 you live those moments, oh baby, you're
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 going to be fantastic, you know, and
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 stop thinking about age all the time.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 Stop. And I know it is hard because I
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 remember there were times when
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 in my 30s [music] I was still wanting to
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 be in the entertainment industry and I
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 had been trying for a very long time.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 And
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 I had people say, you know, even though
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 I looked good, let me tell you, I still
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 looked good. But I had people say, uh,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 h, you know, you're getting up there in
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 age. Maybe you should think about this.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 or
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 um oh you're fantastic your voice cuz I
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 should sing your voice is amazing but
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 you know you're just a little you're
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 you're old now [laughter]
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 you're old now but you know what we have
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 so many choices now and we're going to
00:04:44 --> 00:04:48 get into that [music] but okay just
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 remember that all of that all of those
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 things they show up in your artistry
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 [music] and um
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 remember if you're singing audiences can
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 feel real life in a song. They can hear
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 when something is honest. So, yeah, it's
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 cool to get up there and and and sing
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 something that you don't know nothing
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 about or or just singing something
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 that's of this generation, but it it's
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 hard to do that and hard to relate to
00:05:15 --> 00:05:18 people. I I sometimes I have I don't
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 know. Tell me how you guys feel about
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 this. I might see an artist that I've
00:05:21 --> 00:05:24 loved forever and I love their music and
00:05:24 --> 00:05:28 I know sometimes they have to
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 conform like they have to sing something
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 that's kind of up to date and I get it
00:05:32 --> 00:05:35 just a little bit but fans you have
00:05:35 --> 00:05:40 forever and now you have the we we have
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 uh social media now we have the internet
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 now things that we didn't have back in
00:05:45 --> 00:05:50 the day that you don't have to rely on a
00:05:50 --> 00:05:53 record label or or things like that to
00:05:53 --> 00:05:58 be success successful even more so
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 um to be successful because there are
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 other ways to do it. It's just the way
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 you you think about it. And um just
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 remember your talent doesn't expire.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 [music]
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 You didn't miss your time. You just
00:06:09 --> 00:06:12 survive your training. Cuz sometimes we
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 just been getting prepared. There are
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 people that have been performing for
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 years and they don't get their role
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 until later on in life, you know. So,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 and then there are people back in the
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 day how they used to do. People used to
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 lie about their age. Like they've been
00:06:27 --> 00:06:31 out there literally grinding for years
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 and years and you never knew anything
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 about them and then all of a sudden they
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 come out and they used to lie about her
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 age. if they were really 30 something
00:06:40 --> 00:06:43 then it you know they were they would
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 say that they were 20some so that people
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 would buy their
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 uh [music] their uh product but now we
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 don't necessarily have to do that. We
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 can create our own audiences now because
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 we don't necessarily have to use record
00:06:56 --> 00:06:59 labels anymore and the same way in a way
00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 that you can do for acting. But let's
00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 just let's just get into this. Okay.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 [clears throat]
00:07:06 --> 00:07:10 So the first thing is that
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 one of the things you want to remember
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 is that now you understand the business
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 now. You didn't you were green at first
00:07:18 --> 00:07:22 and you see how the industry is now. So
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 now when you were younger, you just
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 wanted somebody to sign you. [music]
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 You know, you didn't care. You you
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 didn't read the paperwork. You don't ask
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 questions. You just signed on a dotted
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 line. But at this age, honestly, would
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 you do that?
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 Probably not. Probably not. You you
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 you'll it's all about you be looking at
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 those contracts and it's all about
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 ownership and publishing and branding.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 You have a different outlook on things
00:07:48 --> 00:07:51 because you have a different way of of
00:07:51 --> 00:07:54 of thinking. You have responsibilities
00:07:54 --> 00:07:57 now. So a lot of times you don't make
00:07:57 --> 00:08:00 those same mistakes and you don't
00:08:00 --> 00:08:00 >> [music]
00:08:00 --> 00:08:03 >> um buckle under pressure just because
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 you want to be a star. You think about
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 things a little different. So remember
00:08:06 --> 00:08:09 that that actually now is probably a
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 good time for you to go after those
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 dreams. So don't think of it negative
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 negatively as if you missed something
00:08:17 --> 00:08:21 because now hey but at 42 here it is at
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 22 you want a deal. At 42, you want
00:08:23 --> 00:08:28 control. Get it? So, age bias is real,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:31 but money is grown. Money is grown. So,
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 this is another thing. Let's be honest.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:37 Age bias is real. People will [music]
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 put you in a category because you're
00:08:39 --> 00:08:44 older. But labels chase youth. That's
00:08:44 --> 00:08:49 the business. But fans chase connection.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:53 So you can be older and if you have
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 those loyal fans, you have these rock
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 bands [music]
00:08:56 --> 00:08:59 that have these loyal fans and they're
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 making money and [music] they're making
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 making hand over fist of, you know,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 money because they have that connection
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 with their fans. So just remember that.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 And grown people spend money. I know
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 people say, "Yeah, they don't buy the
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 records, but it's a different age and
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 time." And then just if you think about
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 it differently,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 um the grown people are the ones that's
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 giving the kids the money most of the
00:09:23 --> 00:09:27 time. Most of the time. Um but we also
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 spend things of value. So if we are
00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 loyal to you, we are going to spend our
00:09:33 --> 00:09:36 money helping promote you. That's just
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 how that goes. So don't confuse what the
00:09:38 --> 00:09:41 industry markets with what actually
00:09:41 --> 00:09:45 sells. Get it? Okay. So the next thing
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 is
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 your why. Your why by now, you know,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 when you were in your early ages, your
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 why is probably different than it is
00:09:56 --> 00:10:00 now. So once you remember your why, why
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 is deeper now. At this stage, you're not
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 just chasing fame.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 You're chasing legacy,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 healing, [music] proving something to
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 yourself. If you have children, your
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 kids are watching, you're showing them
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 what it looks like to not quit on
00:10:18 --> 00:10:21 yourself. So, your why is a a lot
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 different. So, if you think of it that
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 way, this is the best time. This is the
00:10:26 --> 00:10:29 best time. You didn't miss nothing.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 Okay. So, the next thing is fear versus
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 confidence. Now, [music] yes, the fear
00:10:34 --> 00:10:37 is different now. Um,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 you fear starting over, you fear wasting
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 time, but you also have thicker skin
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 now. So, you you don't fear too much cuz
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 you've already been through a lot.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 [laughter]
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 You've already been through a lot.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 You're less desperate than you were
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 because you know, you know, okay, if I
00:10:55 --> 00:10:57 don't like what this person is saying to
00:10:57 --> 00:11:00 me, I can go over to this person. You
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 don't you don't have the same type of
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 urgency anymore. And that confidence
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 will show up in your artistry. You're
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 like, "Okay, I know I got this and I
00:11:09 --> 00:11:12 know I have options and I know I can do
00:11:12 --> 00:11:15 this." You know, I mean, of course, you
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 have things to help you, but you don't
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 have it's it's just not the same. It's
00:11:19 --> 00:11:22 just not the same. So, your confidence
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 is everything. Now, social media, this
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 is the next thing. Social media changed
00:11:27 --> 00:11:30 everything. Here's the beautiful part.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 You don't need permission anymore.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 You don't need anybody's permission
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 anymore.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 There are no real gatekeepers anymore.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 Like I was saying, if we relate this to
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 music, yeah, we have record labels that
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 control every single thing that you do
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 to say it and whatever. Now, you don't
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 have that. You can do and say what you
00:11:50 --> 00:11:54 want. You can perform what you want. You
00:11:54 --> 00:11:57 don't have to to to be like so and so.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 You don't have to look like her. You
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 don't have to look like him. You don't
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 have to be of something that you're not.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 You don't have to talk about things that
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 you don't want to talk about because now
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 social media has made it so that you can
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 do and be what whoever you want to be.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:17 So remember that this it is advantages
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 of this day and age that you didn't have
00:12:19 --> 00:12:22 back then. So understand that you can
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 build your own audience. You don't
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 necessarily you can still make a lot of
00:12:25 --> 00:12:28 money. You can make money through social
00:12:28 --> 00:12:31 media like YouTube, Tik Tok, Instagram,
00:12:31 --> 00:12:35 whatever else is out there and you can
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 go live. You can have tours, all of
00:12:38 --> 00:12:42 that. You don't need permission anymore.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 I I certainly wish social media [music]
00:12:44 --> 00:12:48 was around when I was really focused
00:12:48 --> 00:12:52 [music] on my career in my early 20s.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:55 Um, you can own your own land. So, you
00:12:55 --> 00:12:58 don't need to be chosen anymore. You're
00:12:58 --> 00:13:02 the choice. So, just remember that. All
00:13:02 --> 00:13:05 right. Redefine making it. Let's talk
00:13:05 --> 00:13:08 about success because making it doesn't
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 only mean Grammys and Billboards. And
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 that
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 that was one of the things that used to
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 hold me up because I'm like, I got to,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 you know, I got to get this Grammy. That
00:13:18 --> 00:13:20 was the that was the the biggest thing,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 the biggest award. But now you don't you
00:13:22 --> 00:13:27 don't necessarily need that because
00:13:27 --> 00:13:30 it might mean now [music]
00:13:30 --> 00:13:33 making it might mean now consistent
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 income from your music or artistry,
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 regional touring, placement, teaching,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:42 owning your own masters. You don't
00:13:42 --> 00:13:45 think of making it differently now. I
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 used to think, you know, because I
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 wasn't out there on all these stages.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 Who says I got to be on the biggest
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 stage in the world to make a living to
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 have my fans to to do all the things
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 that I dream dreamed of? I just You
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 don't have to do that anymore. Making it
00:14:02 --> 00:14:05 can be whatever it is that you want to
00:14:05 --> 00:14:07 be and feel good about it and be at
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 peace with it. [music]
00:14:08 --> 00:14:11 And that's another thing is peace,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:14 freedom. That's success, too. If you're
00:14:14 --> 00:14:17 doing something that you absolutely love
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 and you get happiness and peace from it,
00:14:19 --> 00:14:22 that is actually success.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 And again, that's that's a learning
00:14:23 --> 00:14:26 lesson for me cuz I I was all about the
00:14:26 --> 00:14:31 award or the rich, you know, I had to be
00:14:31 --> 00:14:33 out there with the rich and famous. And
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 it's not necessarily that. Create your
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 own thing, man.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 All right. [music]
00:14:39 --> 00:14:42 So the other thing is now your network
00:14:42 --> 00:14:45 is stronger than it was back then. I
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 mean, you were so busy trying to get a
00:14:47 --> 00:14:51 hold of so and so the the of of
00:14:51 --> 00:14:55 I don't know of Mottown of you know
00:14:55 --> 00:14:58 Arista or you're trying so hard to get
00:14:58 --> 00:15:01 into this and to that and and this but
00:15:01 --> 00:15:04 now by now you have
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 [snorts] combined not combined you've
00:15:06 --> 00:15:10 already built some sort of connections
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 of your your own you just have to
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 utilize them. So everybody knows
00:15:14 --> 00:15:16 somebody else. Just remember that. And
00:15:16 --> 00:15:19 now for sure you know a lot more people
00:15:19 --> 00:15:22 than you did back then. So
00:15:22 --> 00:15:25 um you have old contacts, real
00:15:25 --> 00:15:28 connections. You have a business mindset
00:15:28 --> 00:15:31 which is important. People who trust you
00:15:31 --> 00:15:34 trust you. That matters. It really does.
00:15:34 --> 00:15:37 [laughter] So the next thing is protect
00:15:37 --> 00:15:40 your energy. Protect your energy. You
00:15:40 --> 00:15:44 know, when um younger when you have
00:15:44 --> 00:15:47 people around you that [clears throat]
00:15:47 --> 00:15:50 may have not always been happy for you
00:15:50 --> 00:15:54 or you have people around you that suck
00:15:54 --> 00:15:56 suck your energy for whatever the reason
00:15:56 --> 00:15:59 is. Just please hear me on this part.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:03 Now, you can um
00:16:03 --> 00:16:05 you can't have like no dream killers
