00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 with I know a lot of people may not
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 know. And you've built such an
00:01:52 --> 00:01:56 incredible career as an actor while also
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 serving as president of SAG-AFTRA
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 Atlanta. When you look back at your
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 career and you see that little girl who
00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 started performing at 10 years old, what
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 would you what would you think she'd say
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 um if you she could see you today?
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 >> I think and this is one of the things
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 cuz I have to check me and my friends
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 too. Like when we be like I you know
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 we're in an industry that we're always
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 focused on where we think we should be
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 >> Yeah.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 >> and we lose sight of where we've come
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 from a lot of times focusing so much on
00:02:26 --> 00:02:27 I should be here, I should be getting
00:02:28 --> 00:02:29 these roles, I should be having these
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 credits. But I think little me would be
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 impressed. I think she would. You know,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 I do.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 >> I love that.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:38 >> She thought I would have a lot more
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 money but aside from that like I think
00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 she'd be impressed.

00:02:44 --> 00:02:45 >> Well, okay. So, let's start at the
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 beginning. For someone who's just
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 getting into acting
00:02:50 --> 00:02:51 So, we're going to start off with the
00:02:51 --> 00:02:55 SAG-AFTRA thing first. And why should
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 every actor understand
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 um
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 what SAG does? Even if you're not
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 eligible eligible to join yet, what do
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 you think every actor should know?
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 >> The main thing about being part of
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 SAG-AFTRA is protections. You know,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 um we protect your image. We protect
00:03:14 --> 00:03:17 make sure that you have a safe working
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 environment. We um you can contribute to
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 healthcare and pension. Um we protect
00:03:23 --> 00:03:24 the amount of time someone can use your
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 image. Now with AI, you know, a lot of
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 these non-union jobs you're doing yeah,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 you might get paid good on this vertical
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 but where's your image going? Where's
00:03:32 --> 00:03:36 your voice being used? Um I had a friend
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 of mine just recently sent me this text
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 and was just like oh my god, is this you
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 and um your son? And I'm looking at it.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 She's at some event like a healthcare
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 conference. It is from a job that I did
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 with my son when he was four years old.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:55 He 21 now and they are still using that.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:55 >> Yeah.
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 >> I have no protections because it was
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 non-union.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 You know what I'm saying? So
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 >> Crazy. Yeah.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 >> caught up in the right here, right now
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 and with work being so slow right now,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 there's a lot of conversation about
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 should I join the union, should I stay
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 in the union? Um and those are kind of
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 two different responses. I would say for
00:04:16 --> 00:04:20 people looking to join, I would say hold
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 off until, you know, you are like
00:04:23 --> 00:04:26 working all the time because right now
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 our current members are not working a
00:04:28 --> 00:04:32 lot and having a hard time making dues
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 and and doing whatever. So I think
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 you want to hold tight a little bit, but
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 study study what the rules are regarding
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 um with SAG-AFTRA sets and maybe before
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 you sign a contract, you could cross
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 some things out and be like, um
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 no, you can only use this for 2 years.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 You can only You can't use this in
00:04:50 --> 00:04:54 perpetuity. You know what I mean? So
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 but for people that are in the union, I
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 say stay because
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 again, it's protections and right now
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 you know, the power of the union is that
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 we we combine strength. We, you know,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 they they talk about a fist is strong,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 but individual fingers are just, you
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 know, by themselves. Whereas a fist,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 that's what we are. We're the fist. Um
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 and we make sure that you're safe. We
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 make sure that you, you know, get what
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 is promised to you. If people don't pay
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 it enough time, you get back pay, you
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 know? So that is the power of the union.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:28 >> Okay.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 >> Amongst other things.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 >> Yeah. So I'm glad you say that that you
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 said amongst other things. What do you
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 think are some of the the myths or the
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 the like the misconceptions of what
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 SAG-AFTRA does?
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 >> I mean, you know what? I've seen so many
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 things
00:05:44 --> 00:05:47 online. I mean, and then you get to I
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 mean, unions are made up of people.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:49 >> Mhm.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 >> Right? And people are human.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:52 >> Mhm.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 >> So, there may be certain things that
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 certain humans do or things that have to
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 operate We're in a right-to-work state,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 so we operate differently than LA and
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 New York and some of the other markets
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 that are union.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 >> Yeah.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 >> Um so, I think there's a lot of
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 misconception into how right-to-work
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 um operates. Um
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 what SAG-AFTRA really has power over.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 Like, we can't force the rate Now, we
00:06:20 --> 00:06:23 just um we just got a raise on our daily
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 rates and everything regarding this new
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 contract and everything.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 >> Okay.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 >> But, we can only enforce what the
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 current rules are.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:31 >> Mhm.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 >> You know? And a lot of times, people are
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 like, "SAG should be doing this.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 SAG-AFTRA should be doing this." And
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 it's just like, that's not what we do.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 We These are the rules that we've
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 established, that we've negotiated with
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 the studios.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:43 >> Mhm.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:46 >> This is what we can enforce, you know?
00:06:46 --> 00:06:46 >> Mhm.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 >> The other thing, and I'm, you know, I
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 don't know if this is just cuz I'm a mom
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 and I'm doing check, folks, but a lot of
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 times, people want us to fight for them,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 and they're not willing to fight for
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 themselves.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 >> There you go.
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 >> Like,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 you [snorts] know, we have a a rule for
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 casting. You're supposed to get at least
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 48 hours for a turnaround to submit your
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 audition. And the weekends don't count.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 So, if someone gives you something on
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 Friday, it's not due till Tuesday.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 >> Right.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 >> But, a lot of times, you know, there are
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 different things that come up that um
00:07:17 --> 00:07:20 you know, make it so that you don't get
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 that 48 hours.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 >> Mhm.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 >> But, if it's not falling into the rules,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 people will complain to us, and it's
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 just like, "Well, did you talk to your
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 agent?" "Did your agent talk to the
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 casting director to see if you can get
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 an extension?"
00:07:34 --> 00:07:34 >> Right.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 >> "Did you file properly?" But, this I'll
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 have people calling me, and I'm like,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 "What do you want me to do?"
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 Like,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 >> Yeah.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 >> "Well, my agent wasn't doing this."
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 Well, sounds like you got a problem with
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 your agent.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 Right, you know?
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 >> Right. Well, speaking of that, the say
00:07:48 --> 00:07:52 say for example, okay, if I am
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 um
00:07:53 --> 00:07:56 an actor, and if every actor had to
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 attend a 5-minute SAG-AFTRA
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 orientation
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 before they become eligible, what do you
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 think they should walk away with?
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 Because
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 uh you know, I feel like there should be
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 some type of education,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 um
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 anyways, it I feel like the orientation
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 should happen in some kind of way. It
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 doesn't necessarily have to come from
00:08:20 --> 00:08:23 SAG-AFTRA, but maybe some something
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 through the the talent agent or you
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 know, just the basics. What do you
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 think?
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 >> Well, funny you should say that. We do
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 um we have conservatory, which are
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 monthly classes for our members that are
00:08:34 --> 00:08:37 free to our members. But, um usually
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 every year or every other year, we have
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 an agent panel, and we open it up to
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 pre-members. We call them pre-members,
00:08:43 --> 00:08:46 not non-members. Um and we open it up,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 and we usually have a very
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 big turnout. So, we'll talk about the
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 industry a little bit, and you'll get a
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 little information. We also have
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 presence at different film festivals.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 We'll set up We were out at um Atlanta
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 Film Festival. We're working to be at
00:08:59 --> 00:09:03 other festivals in Georgia. Um
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 and I mean, you can always call the
00:09:04 --> 00:09:07 office. Like, we've got staff. We've got
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 a website. We've got all of these
00:09:09 --> 00:09:12 things. And what happens is so many
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 people want to put the onus on other
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 people to educate them about this
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 business. Everything you need to know is
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 online, and now we got AI. So, you just
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 type it into the machine.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 >> [laughter]
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 >> Say, "What do I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 THIS?" AND IT'LL TELL YOU. NOW, you need
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 to double-check if you look at AI, cuz
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 we know that sometimes they're wrong.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 But,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 it's a wealth of information out there.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 You can't be like, "Oh, I didn't know
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 this. I didn't know that." Well, that's
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 on you, cuz this is your image. This is
00:09:37 --> 00:09:40 your business. This is your career. And
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 you have to be the one who's most
00:09:42 --> 00:09:45 invested in knowing what to do.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 >> Yeah. And I heard you mention a little
00:09:47 --> 00:09:51 bit about the industry being slow right
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 now, but what are some of the positives?
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 I guess cuz I'm always trying to, you
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 know, I know that the industry has ebbs
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 and flows. So, what are some of the
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 positive things that we could be doing
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 right or that as far as actors are
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 concerned that they could be doing right
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 now while the industry may be slow right
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 now? What do you think?
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 >> It's so funny cuz you know, Iyanla
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 Vanzant has a book. I bought it many,
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 many decades ago called Value in the
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 Valley, right? And it's like when you're
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 at your low, what is lesson that you're
00:10:19 --> 00:10:22 supposed to be learning, right? And so,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 right now, I mean, a number of people
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 have had to get full-time jobs, had to
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 get, um, you know, we got you know, I'm
00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 driving Uber. You know, we got people
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 working at Costco, working at Trader
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 Joe's cuz they got good, um, health
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 benefits and everything.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 >> Yeah.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:37 >> Um, it's time for you to write your
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 project. It's time for you to learn
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 other aspects of this industry. It's
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 time for you to learn other aspects of
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 yourself. It's time for you to spend
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 time with your family. It's time for you
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 to, you know, paint that room, build
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 that bookcase, you know what I mean?
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 Learn how to crochet. It's time for you
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 to do other things because what makes an
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 actor valuable
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 is a wealth of information and what you
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 bring to the role. So, the more
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 developed you are as a person,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 >> Right.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 >> you have to offer
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 as an actor, you know? It's time to take
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 that dance class. It's time to, you
00:11:11 --> 00:11:14 know, paint. It's time to do whatever.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 Um, you know, and, you know, find
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 another way to make money.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 >> But you know
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 and I'm glad you said that and you said
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 all the different things that people put
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 or should be doing and I'm like, okay.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 So, if I were an actor, which I'm not,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 but I would be like, okay, so I'm I'm to
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 take this time. Maybe I want to in the
00:11:33 --> 00:11:36 future audition for some roles that is
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 stunt doubling or or or something like
00:11:38 --> 00:11:41 that and maybe kind of hone my skills to
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 something that I probably wouldn't have
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 had time for. It Do you think that would
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 be a good idea as well?
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 >> Of course. It's a fab- I mean, you know,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 it's always a good time to educate
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 yourself and learn a new skill and learn
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 something else. I mean, again, just as
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 human beings, we're supposed to be
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 adaptable. We're supposed to learn. I
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 mean, I'm in my 50s and I'm like, "Gosh,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 I thought
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 I would have a better look by now." And
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 it's like,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 "Okay, so I got to learn something new."
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 >> Yeah.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 >> You know, and and it's going to be
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 different for every person. You know,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 there's people that have become
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 menopause coaches. There are people that
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 have become speakers. There are people
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 that have done all types of different
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 things. We have one of our board
00:12:19 --> 00:12:23 members, he owns barber shops. So, he's,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 you know, cutting hair and and he's been
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 doing that that's been his business, but
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 it allows him to be able to be an actor
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 when he wants to be, but still have this
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 other skill that is another career path
00:12:32 --> 00:12:35 for him. I mean, you look at even
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 stars,
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 >> Mhm.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 >> they're not just actors. You know, they
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 got hair care lines. They've got
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 clothing lines. They got vodka labels.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 They've got all of these different
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 things of different ways to make money
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 and different ways to add value to the
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 community.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 >> Yeah. And I'm glad you also touched on
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 and something something that you said

00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 couldn't do anything. So,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 and now we're dealing with a lot of
00:13:42 --> 00:13:45 people that feel kind of jaded as far as
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 with the industry. So, it's hard to get
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 people motivated, and I think that's
00:13:48 --> 00:13:51 kind of a a feeling that people are
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 feeling across the country throughout
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 various careers and industries. But,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 it's just
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 we've been online, we've been separated
00:13:59 --> 00:14:01 from each other. It's time to get out,
00:14:01 --> 00:14:04 get into the community, talk to people.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 Nobody, I mean, your mom could support
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 you, but she doesn't understand how this
00:14:07 --> 00:14:10 beast works. She doesn't get it. Other

00:21:20 --> 00:21:22 was um it was streaming residuals and it
00:21:22 --> 00:21:24 was AI.
00:21:24 --> 00:21:25 Because once you missed the boat, you've
00:21:25 --> 00:21:27 missed the boat. Like there's no putting
00:21:27 --> 00:21:30 the genie back in the bottle. Like after
00:21:30 --> 00:21:33 after you don't get control of the um
00:21:34 --> 00:21:36 the imagery. But again, we do have
00:21:36 --> 00:21:38 protections on how your
00:21:38 --> 00:21:40 how you get paid, how you can

00:24:29 --> 00:24:31 Hollywood picked up and went overseas

00:24:37 --> 00:24:39 product, you know, a cheaper cheaper

00:24:43 --> 00:24:44 crew that worked The Walking Dead. The
00:24:44 --> 00:24:47 Walking Dead, that's that's an enormous

00:24:49 --> 00:24:51 of training that's outside of just I'm
00:24:51 --> 00:24:53 an actor. It's just you working with
00:24:53 --> 00:24:55 props. You I mean, I had to learn how to
00:24:55 --> 00:24:57 shoot a gun. I had to learn how to throw
00:24:57 --> 00:24:59 a knife. I had to learn you know
00:24:59 --> 00:25:01 somebody was learning how to you know
00:25:01 --> 00:25:04 the archery. Like you're learning all
00:25:04 --> 00:25:05 these things for these roles. So we've
00:25:05 --> 00:25:08 got trained crew. We've got trained
00:25:08 --> 00:25:10 staff I mean trained
00:25:10 --> 00:25:13 you know actors and everything. And now
00:25:13 --> 00:25:14 we're really focused on the independent
00:25:14 --> 00:25:17 film community and empowering them to go
