00:00:50 --> 00:00:52 controversy when we're celebrating civil
00:00:52 --> 00:00:54 rights right and we look at Marcus
00:00:54 --> 00:00:55 Garvey and we think it's just like an
00:00:55 --> 00:00:57 isolated person that was involved with
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 civil rights and that's absolutely
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 correct right we have so many
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 contributions to civil rights the list
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 goes on and on if we talk about web Dua
00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 when you talk about Malcolm X who is
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 from the Caribbean right not
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 specifically Jamaica but his parents are
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 from Grenada right his mother talk about
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 farahan right farahan who was involved
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 with the NAACP and did so much more for
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 the Civil Rights agenda um Malcolm X as
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 well with with Malcolm X as well guess
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 what farrakhan's father is Jamaican
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 right and his mother is from St kits
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 andas when you're talking about Harry
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 bellonte who funded Malcolm X's uh some
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 of his biggest speeches including the I
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 Have a Dream speech um that was Harry
00:01:42 --> 00:01:44 bellante he was an Entertainer at the
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 time he was a Jamaican singer um at that
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 time I wouldn't say it was reggae but it
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 was like Island music I don't know if it
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 was Mento or SCA they had those earlier
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 um music that happened before but Harry
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 bellante um I love his songs by the way
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 but anyways he took his money and funded
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 MLK at that time there was a
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 $50 check that he uh petition and
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 and contributed to by doing awareness
00:02:11 --> 00:02:13 with his show giving the proceeds and
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 his own pocket to fund the Civil Rights
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 Movement so um we also have Shirley
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 Chisum she was the first
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 African-American um SL Bahamian American
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 from the Bahamas that was um elected
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 into Congress and then we have James
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 Welden Johnson right he wrote in the
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 1940s um the lift every voice and sing
00:02:35 --> 00:02:38 right so the list goes on and on and on
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 Maya Angelou's family is from Trinidad I
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 mean I could just keep going on and on
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 with the Caribbean contributions to the
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 Civil Rights right so so many people you
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 hear it online you hear it on YouTube
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 they're just misinformed history oh well
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 you know this all started when the
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 Immigration Act was passed in the Civil
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 Rights era of
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 1965 absolutely incorrect right Marcus
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 Garvey came came explain to us how
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 Marcus Garvey got here in
00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 1910 yes he came in 1910 folks this was
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 long before immigration so what you have
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 to remember is the US and the Britain
00:03:11 --> 00:03:14 were together fighting World War II
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 right they were joined forces so you
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 have to think that Britain was
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 colonizing over the Caribbean right so
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 they were shipping back and forth their
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 slaves to the US and some of us stayed
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 here some of us went back um same thing
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 with the tsiki Airmen during World War
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 II same thing during the Civil Rights
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 era we had the barbadians who came in
00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 the 17th century they kind of were in
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 South Carolina as well so uh because of
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 Great Britain's control we have people
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 like Marcus Garvey we have people like
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 James Welden Johnson you have people
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 like we Dubois who was from the Bahamas
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 so you ask yourselves how were they here
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 in 1910 how were they here in the 1800s
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 how are they getting here because of
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 Britain's colonization they were
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 bringing their black immigrants and they
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 weren't immigrants at the time I guess
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 we were it's like right when slavery was
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 abolished so um it was just that weird
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 time where we were still restricted
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 still lower then still Beyond segregated
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 but we were freely going back and forth
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 to the Caribbean in back right so this
00:04:14 --> 00:04:19 was before 1965 Immigration Act so not
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 to mention we were also involved with
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 the Civil Rights like I said with
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 Malcolm X but just know your history so
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 this Black History Month know that there
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 was um so much coming from the Caribbean
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 as well as the Beautiful
00:04:29 --> 00:04:33 African-American um diaspora here so
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 that's exciting um Marcus Garvey his
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 family to his supporters to everyone who
00:04:38 --> 00:04:41 was there um we are so happy that you
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 are Exon well you're not exonerated yet
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 but you're pardoned hopefully exonerated
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 soon um so that's amazing okay next we
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 are going to talk about the spice School
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 tour everyone right um for our reggae
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 listeners we have to talk about spice
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 School tour right I love you spice but
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 these are conversations that have to be
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 had right because it just wouldn't be
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 reggae influence if we didn't so spice
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 got this genius idea that she was going
00:05:09 --> 00:05:14 to be the face of a role model for
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 Caribbean particularly Jamaican female
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 students so she does a music video um
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 where she's dressed up in a school
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 uniform and I guess it's you know
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 student empowerment women empowerment
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 and she took it a step further and said
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 you know I'm so inspired by this song
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 I'm going to go and just you know tour
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 the Jamaican schools so girls can follow
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 me now spice uh this is reggae influence
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 but she's also been very big in Love
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 and& Hip Hop here in the states so a lot
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 of people are familiar with spice yeah
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 wouldn't say role model right love your
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 spice you keep the culture down you know
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 you're a dance hall artist but what you
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 do is definitely not role modeling right
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 and so the church has got involved and
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 everybody knows about Jamaican Church it
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 ain't like you know it's they they take
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 it very seriously and they are the kind
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 of pastors that you know tell you to
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 your face about yourself you know
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 they're not really diplomatic kind of
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 here you get the churches that maybe a
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 little bit nicer in the Caribbean yeah
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 churches like yeah you know they they
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 kind of in your- face with it so they
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 didn't even give her a chance to go on I
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 don't think she was on one tour date
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 before they shut it down right the the
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 Jamaican people started calling Norman
00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 nor man you can't you can't no spice you
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 can't do it so spice is on her tour you
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 know she's she's on IG posting that
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 she's this role model she thought she
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 was going to you know be on tour and the
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 church has got involved I was like yeah
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 I mean this is some real you know
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 Caribbean stuff here because you don't
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 hear that in the US where you know a
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 church intervenes a tour I don't know
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 exactly what she was going to do at the
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 school I hope it wasn't perform anything
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 because we know you know how usually
00:06:52 --> 00:06:55 that goes down but um and and when I say
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 that for those that don't know you know
00:06:56 --> 00:06:59 we could show some spice Clips you know
00:06:59 --> 00:07:03 um so the churches got involved and um
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 the Jamaican government got involved and
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 while I'm reporting it and and don't
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 shoot the messenger I really did feel
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 bad um and that's hard for me because
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 usually I'm just like as you guys know
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 I'm reporting from way back I was
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 telling you guys that this dance tall
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 thing is just gotten way out of control
00:07:19 --> 00:07:22 right and now fast forward a month later
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 it came to the Forefront what I was
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 talking about last month right like this
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 is ridiculous right this is not for kids
00:07:29 --> 00:07:33 this is not for girls this is not for
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 schools and unfortunately the government
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 got involved I did think that was a
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 stretch um but they they they blocked
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 the tour so um long story short the tour
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 was cancelled you know spice got on live
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 cuz you know that's like what every
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 celebrity does when they've been like
00:07:48 --> 00:07:52 hurt or I guess like offended in some
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 way and she kind of you know exposes the
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 Jamaican churches or the government and
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 and I I get it right like that is
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 something you speak out about and it
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 really is something that you have to
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 really think
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 um how did it go so far you know like it
00:08:08 --> 00:08:11 was like a big high to just be shut down
00:08:11 --> 00:08:14 right so I do feel bad but um the
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 message is clear right the students are
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 not wanting that as a role model but
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 then we have to speak deeper Jamaica
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 like who are our female role models
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 right we I think we have a larger issue
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 at hand and this is what we were talking
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 about right and now we're just seeing it
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 blow up and manifest into real pop
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 culture daily right we're seeing it in
00:08:34 --> 00:08:37 the news now that we don't have a role
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 model so it is sad most of those girls
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 probably really were looking forward to
00:08:40 --> 00:08:43 seeing spice as sad as that sounds the
00:08:43 --> 00:08:46 real question is who could be the person
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 that we want to see on a school tour
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 right who are the women that are
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 representing Jamaica in the right way
00:08:52 --> 00:08:55 right um we talked about Shenia I'm
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 going to cover her next um but that's
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 probably the same outrage that would
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 come from the Jamaican government and
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 from the Jamaican churches um so we have
00:09:04 --> 00:09:10 a bigger picture at hand so spice um I'm
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 sorry about that school tour I must tell
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 you that um if you're listening um
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 hopefully you can like try it again at a
00:09:19 --> 00:09:22 later time when you you know maybe clean
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 up or change some of your lyrics I know
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 that you went through that near-death
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 experience and it was really really
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 terrible and I felt like she was going
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 come out with some gospel Jamaican music
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 some Caribbean that Caribbean gospel
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 music or something more you know getting
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 back on the right path and I think she
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 just kind of like had that that
00:09:39 --> 00:09:42 Awakening and she did like a gospel EP
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 and then it just went right back to
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 dance hall like right back to you know
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 what we see now so anyways I'm sorry
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 about this canceled School tour
00:09:49 --> 00:09:52 hopefully moving forward things will get
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 better um for spice and role modeling so
