[00:00:00] All right, so get ready for another edition of Newz and Trendz with your host Dave
[00:00:20] and it's live.
[00:00:32] Welcome, welcome, welcome to Newz and Trendz with Dave and Len. This is one of your host
[00:00:36] Mr. David Coker for prior to Dave Markingh, promoter event planner, man about pound all around great guy
[00:00:46] and one of the top guys to do this in Delaware. I just wanted to see my partner face when I said that
[00:00:57] so anyway, hey you know what my partner Mr. Leonard, what's going on?
[00:01:01] Hey Dave, everything's good. This is Leonard Young CEO of National Black Guy, Delaware Black.com,
[00:01:07] Black media specialist all around the guy, the other number one guy, well the state of Delaware
[00:01:16] and the Tri-State area. And the Del Marva. Yeah, it's great to say you can't forget about Downstein.
[00:01:27] What's going on there? Hey Dave, everything was good. How was your Easter?
[00:01:32] It was good. It's always good to see another day that our Lord Jesus Christ,
[00:01:44] did what he did for us and rose again as they said in the Bible and we just wanted to
[00:01:53] you know it's a day of tilling but you know I always say
[00:02:00] and I don't know if you remember saying this how it's always horrible weekend. I mean weather
[00:02:05] when Easter is around, you ever noticed that? No I did not. Okay well always it's funny because I
[00:02:13] kid. It always rains on good Friday. I mean it's a 90% chance of rain every time good Friday comes
[00:02:22] around and normally on Sunday it clears up you know it'd be a rainy day but it normally clears up
[00:02:33] but good Friday it always rains because you know according to the Bible we've rained on that day
[00:02:40] that Jesus put on the cross. And every society can remember as a child and I remember my mom telling
[00:02:48] me that and I've always paid attention to the weather. It's either cloudy or it rains
[00:02:53] and you remember Friday it did rain so yeah so but you know Easter we met you and I was just talking
[00:03:03] about Easter and we were talking about how the traditions are gone you know when it comes to Easter
[00:03:09] you know how it used to be a family holiday you go to church you know you spend time with
[00:03:17] family and friends you buy eat dinner together all of that kind of stuff but you just don't see
[00:03:23] that anymore people aren't going out buying new things the wear that day and show off you'd be
[00:03:29] walking around in the street playing and then your new suit or whatever the case might be
[00:03:35] you know you've just been prancered around so people could see you find places for people to see
[00:03:40] your new stuff and even something as simple as the vendors being out on the side of the road or
[00:03:47] whatever with the Easter baskets or the big stuff animals and flowers and stuff you don't see
[00:03:54] people doing that anymore you know so it just tells you how things have changed and
[00:04:01] how the traditions are slowly dissipating and passing you know passing us by I mean in a
[00:04:09] distance for pretty much all the holidays that we grew up with you know they just changed it
[00:04:15] yeah you know I definitely feel like now everything is so commercialized if they can't make or let's
[00:04:23] say you know the general economy they can't make money out of some of these days then you know
[00:04:29] they just kind of start falling by the way side yeah so like I mean could they be the the only thing
[00:04:36] I can think about Easter now this is my general thought pattern as a man okay everybody's going
[00:04:44] to the dollar store to fill up their Easter baskets for the kids right and they're probably going
[00:04:49] out to eat maybe maybe maybe maybe yeah yeah and that's the thing I mean it's
[00:04:58] it's so different now when you look at these these traditions and so forth and
[00:05:04] um I remember just about everything was closed only thing you could really find open back and
[00:05:10] back when I was coming up was a 7-Eleven if you were lucky and look and if you didn't cook
[00:05:16] you could always find a Chinese restaurant open you know but that was I mean basically that was it
[00:05:24] the markets were closed everything was closed you know um now you don't have that problem I mean
[00:05:31] you can go somewhere and get something to eat or you can go somewhere and pick up something if
[00:05:35] you need to pick it up it's just like another day I mean um it's it's it's really a shame um
[00:05:45] I think a lot of it has to do with
[00:05:51] some of us have failed to pass down the family traditions and traditions period
[00:06:00] because they came became less important to us or to those who were you know responsible for passing
[00:06:08] them down and so the younger people nowadays just don't follow yeah well you know Dave you know
[00:06:17] what I think it is too do kids now believe in the Easter bud because you know it's like like when
[00:06:26] we talk about Santa Claus the only reason people don't really care about Santa Claus being real or
[00:06:31] not because another guy gets some gifts but it's like um when I was a grandson my little cousins you know
[00:06:37] it you know one of what I'm who said the Easter Bunny's not they Easter Bunny's not real I heard it on
[00:06:43] social media so it's like you know Dave Dave um instead of having like two or three siblings to
[00:06:51] ruin Christmas and ruin the Easter Bunny and ruin the the the two fairy nail you have a hundred
[00:06:58] million people online ruining you know the imaginary things that were yeah I know well and you know
[00:07:08] because I mean kids do you really truly under the age of ten truly believe in Santa Claus anymore
[00:07:17] right I mean you know I look in my neighborhood all of us believe the Santa Claus until
[00:07:26] till we found out one day that it wasn't true and then they started spreading around the name
[00:07:30] for it you know but you know but it's really the same and you know like I said traditions
[00:07:40] you know the ones that we came up with it's really sad that we don't have those or the ones that we
[00:07:48] did have they're not being you know held on to and then the ones that are still kind of around
[00:07:59] we're seeing them start to disappear you know so I mean you know because a lot of the holidays
[00:08:07] was all about family and nowadays family don't want to be bothered with that yeah if you think
[00:08:14] about it yeah so um but other than that in this horrible weather we've been having for the last
[00:08:24] what week we had that one week that everything to see look everybody was out with you
[00:08:29] I know I'm going and everything now well I guess it's about to come back next week the
[00:08:35] weather's supposed to get warming in next week so let's hope that's the case so but I had to
[00:08:43] laugh I was sitting here watching the freak Nick you get taste to watch that no in fact what what
[00:08:55] I don't know is it on Netflix or something yeah no yeah I will Dave I need that pass
[00:09:05] word oh you don't have it okay we'll talk anyway um this is a deal a double is where very well done
[00:09:16] but it's it's very interesting because it really goes in uh pretty deep about the um
[00:09:24] how it started and how how it started is I was a little surprised because I didn't know that story
[00:09:30] so how it started and then start on a hundred we don't don't give it away
[00:09:36] that's all I'm gonna say alright so but somebody like yourself coming from
[00:09:42] eight to give you don't I wasn't there Dave don't don't put me in the video no no no somebody like
[00:09:48] even though I did say a guy look like you wasn't there
[00:09:51] you know that letter okay I'm just saying okay but anybody who knows anything or comes from
[00:10:01] that era when freak Nick was at his height needs to see this documentary it's very informative
[00:10:07] I thought it was very unique um how they talked about it and but also very deep and you can
[00:10:16] understand what happened to freak Nick and why you know so I really strongly
[00:10:23] recommend this and especially for those who went to black colleges and so forth because that's
[00:10:29] what it was all about you Nate Dave I really like to spend you put on it I'm only
[00:10:35] half to have you talked to my wife and explain me watching the freak Nick video because it's very
[00:10:40] educational and you know a great documentary the the cinema tiger you're white wait wait
[00:10:48] on your wife has to see it yet we Dave we don't have voodoo okay all right all right all right
[00:10:57] Dave are there any other exceptional freak Nick like videos I should be watching that maybe
[00:11:03] you have great storylines and history and that's funny anyway no you just need to look at
[00:11:13] you just need to look at look at this so we'll work that out anyway I just thought I'd put
[00:11:22] that out there especially for people who who came up doing that era yeah there was even the
[00:11:29] you know Delaware even had a moment in it so I did it okay yeah okay yeah you got to tell
[00:11:35] what that was oh no it was like they did interviews with some of the people who was traveling
[00:11:43] oh you know because they talked about how people travel from all over the United States
[00:11:48] California all over the United States and and it was pretty it's pretty funny because that everybody
[00:11:54] kind of traveled most people then fly there they drove down there to freak Nick you know and then
[00:12:01] they were talking to this one group of guys who was traveling and they were from the over Delaware
[00:12:06] oh wow yeah yeah of course they were for now I'm sure they just say they'll say but I'm sure
[00:12:13] that's right and you know I was looking at it there I know these guys you know so you know so
[00:12:20] but it was pretty interesting um like I said it's it's it's very good I think uh
[00:12:26] let's take out yeah people need to check that out really do okay well what would they I will take
[00:12:30] your recommendation since you recommended it and I will yeah try to get a good look at
[00:12:35] okay all right I'm sure you will okay so and and tell me if that's you that's walking across
[00:12:42] the street it wanted to say it good anyway and and even if it was me it still ain't me
[00:12:49] it's delayed you I'm just saying I'm just saying all right all right so um I guess we'll go
[00:12:57] ahead and get into our show um we got some things that we wanted to talk to you about tonight
[00:13:05] I'm gonna be jipped prepared here so our first story
[00:13:10] I think we're in the wrong state letter you know so new twenty dollar minimum wage for fast food
[00:13:19] workers in California is set to start on Monday this is coming Monday so I figured out I saw
[00:13:27] this story and I was just saying what you know I was just like you know the minute because the
[00:13:32] minimum wage in Delaware went to it's it has it happened yet or it's supposed to go to $15 right
[00:13:41] okay yeah I'm not sure if it happened yet but I think it's sometimes yeah yeah well I mean
[00:13:49] let's read a little backdrop to this uh the story comes out of Livermore California it says
[00:13:57] most fast food workers in California will be paid at at least $20 and an hour beginning on Monday
[00:14:05] when a new law is scheduled to kick in given more financial security to a historically low-paying
[00:14:13] profession while threatening to raise prices in a state already known for its high cost of living
[00:14:22] Democrats in the state legislator legislator um passed the law last year in parts uh as
[00:14:31] acknowledgement that many more of more than 500,000 people who work in fast food restaurants are not
[00:14:40] teenagers earning some spending money but adults working because working to support their families
[00:14:50] that includes immigrants like Ingrid Poloreo who says he is he started working at McDonald's
[00:14:57] shortly after arriving in the United States in 2019 fast food was her full-time job until
[00:15:04] last year now she works about eight hours per week at at a jack-in-a-box while working
[00:15:11] other jobs the $20 raise is great I wish this would have come sooner she said
[00:15:19] um through a uh translator because I would not have been looking for so many jobs in different
[00:15:27] places the law was supported by the trade association representing fast food franchise owners
[00:15:36] but since it passed many franchise owners have been moaned to impact the laws having on them
[00:15:43] especially during California's slowing economy um Alex Johnson owns 10-odd and
[00:15:51] pressels and cinnabon restaurants in San Francisco Bay area he says sales has slowed in 2024
[00:16:00] prompting him to lay off his office met uh office staff and rely on his parents to help with paying
[00:16:08] payroll in human resources um it says increasing his employee wages will cost Johnson about $470,000
[00:16:21] um yeah $470,000 each year and I will have to raise prices from 5% to 15% at a store
[00:16:33] and no longer hiring or seeking to open new locations in California now this is interesting you know
[00:16:40] because you know with them raising the minimum wages that's grateful to workers but then of course
[00:16:50] you know you got to look at the other side because we're looking at the the owners of these businesses
[00:16:56] and what they have to do in order to pay these salaries right and um when you have to raise
[00:17:04] prices from 5% to 15% that's quite a hype there and then of course you know everything costs more
[00:17:11] right now so you also paying for supplies and food and all of that stuff to cook and to give out and
[00:17:19] you know it's kind of that you know that's got to be I guess you don't like this guy on 10 different
[00:17:27] restaurants uh well 10 anions and um the cinnabons you know that's got to cut into his profit by a lot
[00:17:38] he probably starts losing money yeah I agree but you know on the flip side I think right now
[00:17:44] it's hard to get workers you know a lot of these retail jobs fast food jobs they have a hard time
[00:17:51] retaining people just because and Dave I'm quite say people people just don't want to work now
[00:17:57] you know like these days there's a whole generation of people who who really don't want to work
[00:18:02] and Dave and Dave you you probably know because you work for the state I see it every day yeah
[00:18:08] I say it every day so I'm wondering if this $20 is not only for you know more equitable pay
[00:18:15] but just to get people to not quit you know come into work every day as well yeah it's as
[00:18:24] I'm sure it's it's supposed to be um
[00:18:30] it's supposed to be uh I guess it could be looked at as being a centipist far as coming in and
[00:18:36] getting people to come into work but then you know it like I said it's too full because now the
[00:18:43] employer has to pay the salary and of course you know you got to get the people in there to work
[00:18:47] now and it is true because I thought that was very interesting how they mentioned this not
[00:18:52] this is not just about young kids getting paid this money these are people trying to support
[00:18:57] their families that are that are you know this you know and even on where we live
[00:19:04] when you go on to one of these fast who basis places now a lot of it's not necessary all young kids working
[00:19:11] in these places anymore nah you're right you know there's a lot of older folks working in these places
[00:19:18] and you know and um it's really it really says a lot because when you look at where we are
[00:19:28] I mean right now the top when you you can look at saying two of the top employers
[00:19:34] for people who are 20 to 40 years old is wow wow and Amazon okay now why why wouldn't it guess
[00:19:44] Amazon sounds legitimate yeah yeah because that's the easy and even mine they can make good money
[00:19:51] at both of these places I mean the both places pay weekly on an average but uh the average
[00:19:58] while our worker is making anywhere from four to six hundred dollars a week um you know that's
[00:20:04] not going into any management position or anything like that that's just the average worker
[00:20:10] and because I see the salaries all the time so I know exactly what they made and the average
[00:20:15] um Amazon worker makes six hundred to eight hundred dollars a week oh wow yeah but of course you
[00:20:23] you know you got to put in the hours you got to do the work yeah because they're also going to
[00:20:27] work you know so you ain't going to both places are gonna you're gonna have to put in the work
[00:20:32] then in order to get the money but when you go into these places yeah there's some young people
[00:20:38] there but you also see a lot of older people because this is good money and they have like I said
[00:20:44] they have to feed their families before those that have family right yeah so but it's interesting
[00:20:51] I wonder how that's going to work out in California and I wonder how they said other states are looking at
[00:20:56] following suit and raising you know the salaries for fast food workers you know of course this has
[00:21:03] been talked about all over for a while anyway you know Delaware like you know it's supposed to
[00:21:08] been going to fifteen dollars an hour or most fast food places so um it's gonna be interesting how
[00:21:16] it affects everything well you know I also think if it passes for Delaware fast food restaurant
[00:21:23] workers who's next because and next in my mind would be retail workers you know I mean yeah but
[00:21:30] that's going to be is that going to be that's going to be tough for a lot of the retail workers
[00:21:34] because right now a lot a lot of retail stores are laying people off and a lot of people are going
[00:21:40] out of business okay I mean did you see how what is it um uh family dollars closing a lot
[00:21:48] of their stores yeah I didn't know of family yeah and a lot of the dollar stores are going out
[00:21:54] of closing up because they can't compete with Amazon in places like that you know so
[00:22:02] the retail worker is that's going to be a heart unless you got a really established chain
[00:22:08] you know um that's that's not going to go anywhere anytime soon yeah yeah that's going
[00:22:15] to just gonna be hard really is so but I guess we'll keep an eye on on on that and see how
[00:22:23] how what they're doing is going to affect other states and and how they're going to deal with that
[00:22:32] you know and how many of these chains these fast food chains will stay in business as well
[00:22:37] because when you look at some of these fast food some of them are already I mean I went into
[00:22:42] and I'm gonna say this and I'm gonna move on to the next story okay do you go do you ever go to
[00:22:47] five guys rare rarely but I do like it though why do you rarely go there usually there's the same
[00:22:55] reason for everybody to be honest like I don't I don't think there's a five guys on my normal route
[00:23:02] that's easily accessible okay that's the reason yeah because to be honest I can't even think where
[00:23:08] five guys is but I mean there's one closer than you think where tell me you know what a tick
[00:23:14] delay is on on room 40 yep is there one in that shop center yeah right across from tick for
[00:23:21] all right in the shopping center or across 40 no in in the shop center where tick for lay is
[00:23:28] it's one you can walk out of tick for lay walk right into there yeah yeah like I said it's right
[00:23:35] you know and it's five minutes it's five minutes from here yeah so that's what I'm waiting but
[00:23:40] you know day two I think sometimes we get into a I'm gonna make up a word drive a topia phobia
[00:23:49] yeah well not you this is much driving you do every day and and what my made up definition for that is
[00:23:58] people who don't like to get out the car and pick up food they like to go through the drive
[00:24:03] so yeah right I get it I get it and yeah you definitely got to go inside there but the only
[00:24:09] reason I brought that up is that place now they they do very well but they're not cheap
[00:24:17] that's another that's what that's what so like I might go to them once or twice a year okay I like
[00:24:26] this stuff I like their food but that might go once or twice a year because if you get a burger
[00:24:33] one of the well it you know the regular hamburgers is like a double
[00:24:38] burger burger or you can get a single burger and they're fries now I love their fries and they give
[00:24:44] you a ton of fries but I know it is five guys one who just throw your fries in the bag
[00:24:50] they there's a cup but then yeah but it's always more than yeah yeah yeah uh I don't like
[00:24:56] their fries and I think that may be another reason you don't like their fries now I like their fries
[00:25:02] I'd say I get their cash in fries and they're really really good but then you spend it 20 something
[00:25:07] dollars yeah just for two things you know and so they're they're pretty expensive so a place like that
[00:25:15] I wonder how they stay afloat if all the sudden they have to pay more to their workers
[00:25:21] well David you already know yeah yeah that that a $20 meal be a $25 meal yeah and their strategic look
[00:25:30] those and those places are strategically placed in certain neighborhoods so you you know
[00:25:35] so I guess they won't they won't miss a beat so I'm gonna put it that way so all right well moving
[00:25:43] on to our next story if you can a fast food our next story has to do with burger king believe it or not
[00:25:54] it said burger king is giving out free wafers for the solar eclipse now and you heard about
[00:26:00] the solar eclipse that's supposed that's about to happen yeah and for those of you that are
[00:26:05] under a rock they don't know about this on April the 8th you'll not only have a chance to see the
[00:26:13] solar eclipse in the sky but you can also be grabbing a free burger this is funny what they
[00:26:24] celebrate these days in celebration of this cosmic rare event and this is a rare event because
[00:26:29] you know the solar eclipse only happens but so often burger king will be distant out free wafers
[00:26:36] all day on April the 8th Royal Parks members can text ority clips to 251-251 to claim a
[00:26:46] buy one get one for free wapper offer that can be redeem during or after the eclipse via the
[00:26:54] bk app and website once claimed the wapper bugle deal is available from April 8th to
[00:27:03] April 15th at participating burger king's locations in the United States
[00:27:09] and then it said don't forget to grab your glasses and your wapert now have you seen the glasses
[00:27:14] that they they give up for this thing I feel like I have a they're like those old 3d the old
[00:27:20] paper 3d glasses yeah this eclipse is really a big deal because they've really been making a lot
[00:27:28] of and there's a lot of retailers that are working little deals around the eclipse and so for
[00:27:35] but they're saying in certain places you'll be able to see it clear in certain states like
[00:27:42] they said Texas is like one of the top states you'll be able to see this thing in yeah I'm looking at
[00:27:47] the map now so it looks like it's Texas
[00:27:52] okay on this thing is testing my knowledge of shape states based on shape
[00:27:58] it looks like it's yeah so it looks like it's basically it's a slight arch from Texas
[00:28:06] up to to Pennsylvania so it's a little left yellow where yeah yeah they said in Pennsylvania I
[00:28:12] think they said it's Grant in area uh Grant in Erie EA somewhere up in there they said that
[00:28:19] that's supposed to be a good um vantage point in that area you'll be able to see it from here but
[00:28:27] not as clearly as like word they said in PA that you're supposed to be able to see it um but
[00:28:35] they said this is supposed to be like a really big eclipse you know um I remember now it's
[00:28:43] seen like when I was coming up there was always eclipse I don't it didn't all the sudden like
[00:28:48] for years I didn't see anything about eclipse have you ever have you ever tried to see one
[00:28:54] yes I think then we have the clips about um oh yeah four or eight years where
[00:28:59] Donald Trump wanted to look straight up at it with no glasses what wasn't that the same with clips yeah
[00:29:06] well I know we had the there was the what was that the nope nope what was the remember there was um
[00:29:18] uh what was that the black was that the um red moon blood moon back in 2015 2016 somewhere around
[00:29:26] okay yeah it was um I forget what it was was Trump Trump wasn't in office then was he or was he
[00:29:38] no so I think he didn't get elected 16 to 20 so he was yeah yeah yeah so I forget what that was
[00:29:46] I wasn't a lunar eclipse or something like that or but I just remember yeah and of course
[00:29:55] what that I mean that was the former president of I'm saying that um he did say that he was going to
[00:30:02] look at it without any say you on whatever you know but I remember as coming up as kids they said
[00:30:08] if you looked at a solar eclipse and looked at that slanted whatever it's gonna it would burn your
[00:30:13] retina you know no but but but Dave that that that is true yeah but but you hear people talking about
[00:30:20] looking at these things all the time I mean I don't know I remember the last time we had something
[00:30:26] like this they said do not look at it directly because it will make you go blind or maybe not
[00:30:33] make it would probably call some damage whatever that may be yeah well but these glasses when you
[00:30:40] look at the glasses they do look like the old 3d glasses right yeah I was like okay how much
[00:30:45] protection are these things supposed to give me I know I know Dave they they they get them from
[00:30:50] China they'd be like 35 cents per person and and we're trusting our eyes like with them
[00:30:55] I'm getting from the TikTok shop right yeah the five for a dollar the dollar store yeah there you
[00:31:04] go there you go but it's just some it's really interesting when you when you hear about these things but
[00:31:12] yeah I know there's a couple people my job they've been talking about that Dave was gonna they
[00:31:16] were planning on trying to see if they can see it they got the glasses and everything already
[00:31:21] so I was like okay well you have fun I don't need to I don't need to see any I don't need to see
[00:31:28] it myself you know so but but I just thought that was interesting because Burger King is jumping
[00:31:34] on the bandwagon now retailers if you're if you're smart this is something to do because you can
[00:31:40] you can definitely make some money off of this you know um you know they doing that bogeo thing
[00:31:48] you know it's just like you know uh wow for years it always under free coffee on certain on you
[00:31:57] know certain days well usually we're going Tuesdays but uh they would do the free coffee you know
[00:32:03] everybody's saying how can they give away free coffee like that every day in the place we pack
[00:32:07] especially the one over there by my job man that's that's one of the business is wow wow the round
[00:32:12] and that place you couldn't even walk in that parking lot because you're gonna get hit it
[00:32:16] it would be so many cars over there but what makes that so successful is because when people
[00:32:23] go in there to get that free coffee they're buying something yeah definitely you know so they make
[00:32:30] more money on those days than they do when they're not giving away free coffee right you know
[00:32:37] so which is a stroke of genius as far as I'm concerned so any of the retailers if I had a little
[00:32:44] retail business or whatever I'll be doing something too you know trying to cash in on it you know
[00:32:51] so I think it's pretty smart where Burger King is doing and I'm sure they're gonna make out like a fat
[00:32:55] rat you know so yeah oh I'm sure yeah so but um and this one of the I saw that story I thought it was
[00:33:03] pretty cool so since we were talking about reap uh you know talking about fast food and everything
[00:33:09] except but just uh let you guys know you're listening to news and trends with Dave and Len thank you
[00:33:16] for tuning in where we're always appreciative when you guys come and hang out with us what's
[00:33:21] our next story sir yep so Dave the next story and this is one we uh I remember us talking about two
[00:33:27] three years ago or something of that nature but there was a black mother in uh Texas who was
[00:33:35] primarily or formerly sentenced to illegal voting and she has had her conviction overturned
[00:33:44] so basically what happened um for Crystal Mason the mother of three she was sentenced to five years
[00:33:51] in prison for filling out a provisional ballot in the 2016 election um she was a felon but she
[00:34:00] said she did not know she was ineligible to vote as a felon um because of that felony at the time
[00:34:11] she was on supervised release after being jailed for tax fraud so she was jailed for tax fraud she got
[00:34:18] out she was considered a felon and she had filled out a provisional ballot for the 2016 election
[00:34:26] and because uh she was because she was ineligible as a felon she was given five years
[00:34:35] um prison of five year conviction which was recently reversed and basically the judge said
[00:34:43] after considering the deposit issue uh demanded to us whether the evidence was sufficient to support
[00:34:51] Crystal Mason's conviction for illegal voting under the Texas election code we reversed the trial
[00:34:59] judgment and render judgment acquitting her so you know of course she was super excited by the um
[00:35:08] you know by the announcement so um and David do you remember this story when we covered it before
[00:35:15] yeah as you were talking it it was coming back to me now she did the time though right
[00:35:22] yes so she she did do a portion of the time I believe not all of the time but also she did a
[00:35:28] a portion of the time but um you know they're giving her back any monetary
[00:35:35] so here the article does not say that it gave her back any money
[00:35:41] um so it almost looks like um you know they kind of kind of just excused her but we're not giving
[00:35:49] any compensation this is after she did part of the time correct because I mean technically
[00:35:58] she was a felon so you know it's not like she was innocent from the charge
[00:36:03] um she was a felon but you know she said she did not know she was a felon but you know David
[00:36:10] you know it's kind of funny too because um and and I just say what I've seen in the news
[00:36:17] they really take this illegal voting serious against a lot of black people oh yeah it's and
[00:36:23] they only say it's black people I mean after all look we we have a candidate running for president
[00:36:31] that every week has a new trial that he has put it but yet he's still running for president
[00:36:38] now we know if that was you know uh president Obama that this wouldn't even be going on right now
[00:36:46] we already know that okay so there's rules for us and this rule for them right you know and I
[00:36:56] mean I hate to say that but I mean we just you know we're treated differently I mean yeah I mean
[00:37:04] there's no question it's no if it's a but about that we are definitely treated differently and
[00:37:11] because we're treated differently and those type of things you know are always put in our face
[00:37:19] and we have to deal with them it's really it's really a thing um and you know I believe that
[00:37:27] that person probably didn't know what the rules were in reference to whether or not she could vote
[00:37:33] or not because of her you know being convicted as a felon um but you know it's just amazing we
[00:37:43] for years we didn't have any real major issues around voting it only really started happening
[00:37:50] when a certain person got in right and they are just reading the article a little more
[00:37:57] and this is how funny things work so while she was in jail for the the tax fraud
[00:38:08] the letter informing her that she was not eligible to vote was sent to her house
[00:38:13] and and and it uh the mother said that um you know basically she didn't notice the the warning on the
[00:38:26] ballot because she was too focused on filling out other information on the form so but you know
[00:38:35] days day I'm you know it's kind of weird how certain stuff works like if she's in jail and you're
[00:38:41] sending stuff to her house with let's say her elderly mother they are collecting the mail like
[00:38:47] yeah yeah that that that makes sense yeah see that I guess it's man there's so much I can say here but
[00:38:56] I'm not you know it's you know it's it's really you know I just find to have like I said we just never
[00:39:05] had issues with the voting and what I've been around I've been around since you know the 60s
[00:39:14] in the when I when I say I don't remember hearing anything about any issues when it came to voting
[00:39:22] other than the typical issues that you know we wasn't you know voting you know that there was
[00:39:30] some black turning out to the polls and stuff like that and those type of issues you know but nobody
[00:39:37] ever had to do recounts and all of that kind of stuff that I can remember and all of this stuff
[00:39:43] just started happening when you know um when Donald Trump you know was running for office and
[00:39:50] when he got in office you know and then when he the soon as he wasn't reelected all of a sudden now
[00:39:57] we got all these measures involving voting that has to be in place even even when the election comes
[00:40:04] around in November if he still allowed to still be the candidate for the Republican Party I'm sure
[00:40:13] there's going to be some issues then too yeah I'm sure I'm sure so well thank thank God for justice
[00:40:24] that these people took another look at that and was able to overturn that conviction
[00:40:33] and I'm sure this mother is really elated over that whole thing
[00:40:40] and um you know that that's one case of justice working out for the best
[00:40:48] okay all right we'll move on to our next story um let's see
[00:41:02] um it seemed like I'm always talking about the health care field and
[00:41:10] and how we're treated with the health care field I just came across this story earlier
[00:41:15] and it made me I just wanted to talk about talk about this particular story um it says how a bias
[00:41:26] test kept thousands of black patients from getting a new kidney
[00:41:32] um says Jasmine Evans had been waiting for a new kidney for four four years
[00:41:39] when not her hospital reveals shocking news she should have been put on the transplant list
[00:41:45] in 2015 instead of 2019 and a racially biased organ test was to blame
[00:41:55] as upsetting as that notification was it also was part of an unprecedented move to mitigate
[00:42:02] derasional inequity Evans is among more than 14,000 black kidney transplant candidates who
[00:42:12] um who were waiting at the time moving them up the priority list for their transplant
[00:42:23] um it said as issued uh wait hold on I remember just reading that letter over and over again
[00:42:31] said Evans she was 29 uh at the time who shared the notice um in a TikTok video to educate
[00:42:41] other patients how could this happen and issue is once widely used test that overestimated how well
[00:42:51] black people's kidneys were functioning making them look healthier than they really were
[00:42:57] all because of an automated formula that calculated results for black and non-black
[00:43:03] patients differently that race-based equation could delay diagnosis of an organ failure
[00:43:10] and evaluate a valuation for a transplant exacerbating other disparities uh disparities
[00:43:19] that already make black patients more at risk of needing a new kidney but less likely to get one
[00:43:27] but now think about that so they had this test that you know supposed to evaluate whether or not
[00:43:36] you're supposed to you know that you are a candidate for this kidney but because it was a racially
[00:43:43] biased test it was not giving the people black people who were necessarily eligible at that particular
[00:43:53] time to get the kidney it wasn't making them eligible to get them because based on how they scored
[00:44:00] this test what do you think about that uh sounds about white okay continue thoughts there sir
[00:44:18] yeah i mean are we really surprised i mean it is surprising and it's very disappointing
[00:44:30] but are we really surprised yeah man i mean it is true or we shouldn't be surprised at all
[00:44:39] if you know they we always talk about um you know uh black women and doctors treated unfairly
[00:44:48] um you know we talked about all the chemicals they put in all these relaxing products you know for women
[00:44:56] um you know so
[00:45:00] you know we even talked about that the algorithm
[00:45:04] yeah being raised the algorithm no yeah um so you know i mean i'm i'm not surprised it is very
[00:45:10] disappointing because you know think about many lives could have been saved some of these
[00:45:14] transplants yeah that's true that is true um i know it's really the same that they would even
[00:45:23] well first of all the fact that we even are finding this out and it's really not going to make
[00:45:28] the the health care field look any better because we always we you and i have done i don't know
[00:45:35] how many stories over the last three years talking about the in quality inequalities that
[00:45:40] they were given to us as far as the the health care field is it's concerning especially to women
[00:45:46] so you know it says here there's a there's a study it says between January 2023
[00:45:53] and mid-March of the same year more than 14,000 black kidney transplant candidates have had their
[00:46:03] wait time modified by an average of two years according to the United States Network for Oregon
[00:46:10] sharing which runs the transplant system so far more than 2800 of them including Evans have
[00:46:18] received a transplant so 2800 out of 14,000 was that about three four percent somewhere around it
[00:46:29] yeah no 28 you said 2800 yeah 2800 out of 14,300 to be exact so it's about a quarter 25 percent
[00:46:44] okay all right so there you go um and it's funny you just said this listen to this next statement
[00:46:52] but it's just one example of a larger problem permeating health care numerous formulas or algorithms
[00:47:02] there you go there's the word right there using medical decisions treatment guides guidelines
[00:47:08] diagnostic tests risk calculators adjusting answers according to race or ethnicity in a way that puts
[00:47:17] people of color at a disadvantage man it's really scary you know because like I said we keep
[00:47:26] finding out all of these things that they're doing to try to hinder us with health care you know
[00:47:33] you know we're paying we're paying the money that we need to pay in order to get the proper
[00:47:39] health care in most cases and then for those people that don't have health care or people who
[00:47:44] have a like a Medicaid or a Medicare type health care there's still not even though they
[00:47:54] have the plans that will cover the procedures they're still not giving them the best
[00:48:03] the best help and the best routes in order to do the things that are necessary for them to get
[00:48:11] people well or to do the things that will help to improve the quality of life and it's really a shame
[00:48:19] especially when it comes to these kidney transplants because that's the kidney transplants are one of the most
[00:48:25] because one of the most consistently transplanted organ there is because you know a lot of people
[00:48:41] have issues with kidney and a lot of it comes from the medication that most of us you know most
[00:48:47] of us are taking so a lot of times or you know or for those who are of course we're not including
[00:48:54] the people that are just abusing you know their bodies with certain things but but believe in
[00:49:00] another lot of it has to do with the medication that people are being given at this time you know so
[00:49:07] I just wanted to talk a little bit about that story you know it's really scary because it's
[00:49:16] just things like we we're always left behind when it comes to the things that we need and we got to
[00:49:23] we're hoping you know maybe educating more black students you know medical students and getting them
[00:49:29] in in that field would help us or other you know people who other people of color that can help
[00:49:39] you know help us with getting the better care because you know right now just seems like a lot
[00:49:46] of his money money grabbing just things like you know or they're going to help the people that day
[00:49:53] they want to help every every time I hear a story like this I think about what is John Q
[00:49:59] that movie John Q that yeah and what he you know you know what he had to do in order to get
[00:50:07] his son the transplant that he needed you know so you know so it's really a shame so but hopefully
[00:50:16] hopefully you know with the cat being let out the bag that the maybe things some things would change
[00:50:21] about this right okay all right okay uh I guess that was our last story and we're finally
[00:50:34] all right well let's get ready to wrap up the show we'll see y'all next week
[00:50:41] time say you can look for those of you guys and listen to the show all the time let us try
[00:50:47] to avoid this favorite part of the show people so we're gonna do Dave's corner today um but which
[00:50:56] is Linda's favorite part of the show but we're gonna do a little bit different today so I'm
[00:51:02] not gonna put him on the spot with a hard question because he always gets worried he always says
[00:51:07] all the questions are too hard and I don't know how to actually answer he'd be crying about that
[00:51:12] stuff y'all and anyway uh but um we're gonna do today one must go so I got some one must go
[00:51:23] questions for you uh a few of them and we're gonna go through them and let's see let's see what
[00:51:30] how let her answer these questions okay you game game time Dave game time okay I hear you
[00:51:41] all right here we go first one uh prince Michael Jackson
[00:51:50] Luke the Van Dross Stevie Wonder
[00:51:56] Prince well he said that would cover this too folks yeah no you were not a prince fan um he was all right
[00:52:09] oh wow it's a yeah if you guys you guys
[00:52:19] want to do this show for the first time and don't know my partner that well this is
[00:52:27] typically this is typical of him these type of answers so I'm just letting y'all know so
[00:52:32] oh then Dave yeah first was just all right he said okay I'll put it like this I love some
[00:52:41] Stevie Wonder you know we already talked about last we can look at man yeah yeah and then you know
[00:52:48] what Michael Jackson the greatest of all time so
[00:52:53] okay all right all right okay all right what else you got all right number two
[00:53:01] beyond say
[00:53:05] Janet Jackson Rihanna or tell us with
[00:53:13] now there's a way hold on okay the reason the reason that those four are in there together
[00:53:21] because they're four the biggest entertainer female entertainers to ever do it okay that's
[00:53:26] the reasoning for the four they can see but I already know you could wait to get it out yeah I know
[00:53:34] but go ahead go ahead um so we're gonna give the swethies a boot okay okay okay you're gonna
[00:53:42] give it a tell us with okay all right all right okay
[00:53:49] number three so far these these haven't been challenged he you know he's he's answering
[00:53:53] these questions with a lot of confidence right now let's see let's see what happens with the next
[00:53:57] one no Tories B.I.G J.Z two-pock Kendrick Lamar M&M
[00:54:10] M&M gets the boot okay is there a particular reason for that by the way no
[00:54:18] okay all right okay
[00:54:28] number four chocolate chip cookies peanut butter cookies
[00:54:36] white chocolate macadamia nut cookies oatmeal cookies or snickerdoodle cookies
[00:54:43] I'm gonna give rid of the snickerdoodle cookies
[00:54:49] okay I had a feeling you're gonna say that okay because I'm not exactly sure what they are
[00:54:55] they're actually pretty good I like snickerdoodle cookies yeah so out of but out of that group
[00:55:02] I'm probably would have to agree with you out of that group yeah because I love all those other
[00:55:08] ones so I'm okay all right number five these all games
[00:55:17] operation trouble monopoly suits and ladders candy land trouble
[00:55:30] oh trouble huh okay
[00:55:37] uh and that group I probably would say operation that game used to drive me crazy so
[00:55:47] I love trouble though no surprise you would get rid of trouble okay all right number six this is
[00:55:55] uh Italian food okay spaghetti and meatballs lasagna baked ziti
[00:56:06] ville parmesan fettuccini Alfredo the third one you said
[00:56:15] baked ziti yep well United Ziti personal I mean I am but you know lasanias spaghetti fettuccini
[00:56:24] ville parmesan yep kill it okay all right number seven thighs wings breath drumstick
[00:56:43] yeah yeah they think about this one a little bit on what do you say the breath yeah oh really
[00:56:58] okay I would get rid of the thigh personally I'm not a thigh person I like the white meat okay
[00:57:04] okay uh the next one your favorite fish lobster shrimp oysters or mussels oysters
[00:57:22] okay do you like mussels I do I would not do oysters or mussels so no I have have you have you ever done it though
[00:57:33] no what's your weight in for not that's just not my cup of tea you know so both of them will go for me
[00:57:51] but I hear mussels most people prefer mussels overwaters or so I do hear that
[00:57:58] okay I got two more for you next one
[00:58:03] the Jefferson's good times live in single Martin my wife and kids that's how I want to say it
[00:58:18] I was like my wife and kids or you want me to throw it over yeah all of okay the Jefferson's
[00:58:26] good times live in single Martin my wife and kids Jamie Foxill and San Francisco I probably have to say
[00:58:46] good times I knew you want to say that I said he was saying good times I knew you were gonna say good
[00:58:54] I knew you're gonna say good times why good times by the way probably just because it's the oldest I
[00:59:02] I feel like I've watched more of the other ones and okay when I think of funny things I just
[00:59:09] think of more of the current ones okay all right now get it I get it and yeah good times would probably be
[00:59:17] a little bit before your time I mean you you're around but you know there probably wasn't
[00:59:22] something you would have watched back then a lot okay here's the last one
[00:59:30] black panther I'm in the first one the Avengers the first one
[00:59:40] Captain America Civil War Spider-Man No Way Home
[00:59:47] Avengers Endgame Spider-Man No Way Home
[00:59:57] yeah okay all right so you liked all the other ones I'll take it then huh yeah and in fact
[01:00:03] Captain America Civil War is like my number one one yeah no that never you sang that before
[01:00:08] that's you never won huh yeah over in game huh yes we know what because Captain America Civil War
[01:00:18] it was the storyline was simple you know watching in-game you almost had to remember stuff
[01:00:25] with different different one yeah yeah there was a lot going on in in-game yeah it was but yeah
[01:00:33] okay all right you know you got you got a little nerve with there for a moment there but you
[01:00:40] did all right yeah you know you get your moments there but I thought those were good I thought
[01:00:46] those were good one must go all right Dave Dave are you ready oh you got a couple yes because
[01:00:55] you know I'm okay all right go ahead all right I'm ready okay hold on let me just put the
[01:01:04] finishing touches on okay okay okay the Cosby Show Family Matters Fresh Prince of Belair
[01:01:21] Jamie Fox show my wife and kids
[01:01:31] uh I'm gonna go with
[01:01:38] in that group family matters
[01:01:45] why is that did I do that yeah um because I think the others shows
[01:02:01] were more uniquely put together and a couple of shows successful black businessmen
[01:02:11] and and I just think that I enjoyed them more you know I thought they were funnier family family
[01:02:20] matters had funny moments so that's my choice all right for breakfast pancakes waffles eggs your favorite
[01:02:38] breakfast meat or grits grits no problem you only grits no I don't eat grits
[01:02:50] that's easy for me grits okay not black when it comes to that so
[01:02:56] yeah biggie two pot jazzy nose low range
[01:03:17] so I'm gonna look at this a little different and you were looking at things I'm looking at
[01:03:22] this according to their um
[01:03:29] soup their status as far as being superstars are concerned um
[01:03:43] I'm gonna say low wing okay low wing gets the blue yeah in my in that group yes
[01:03:52] okay all right
[01:04:00] he man jio transformers or justices Lee these are the cartoon
[01:04:12] jio oh you are what in that group yeah because I love him man and I love the other shows
[01:04:21] I yeah Joe yeah I remember the you know the figures when I was coming up they were really popping
[01:04:28] on when I was coming up and even the cartoons and everything but I like the other ones better
[01:04:36] so jio would be the one missing out that group for me
