00:05:22 --> 00:05:28 Cage and Purpose and performed alongside artists including Kirk Franklin,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:33 Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Johnny Gill, and Jennifer Hudson.

00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 we were, you know, kind of speaking more about the Derby.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:19 I don't know. You know, I don't know if I was familiar with this part of the
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 bio. So you were performing in London, correct?
00:06:22 --> 00:06:27 Yes. Yeah. I was stationed in England for about three years. And so, man.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:34 I got around, as they say. So, I mean, I'm just curious. So how is the music
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 seen in London? Because I always
00:06:35 --> 00:06:40 feel like a lot of London artists kind of transition well to America.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 Do American artists transition well to England?
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 I'm not sure how it is now, per se, but.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:57 It was more American to the British environment, to London.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:05 They have a lot of artists over there that are well-known over there that didn't
00:07:05 --> 00:07:11 translate always to, to, you know, uh, to the transatlantic music scene, so to speak.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 Okay. And then, so I, you know, I guess starting out.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:22 Why do you think you gravitated to Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston when you were young?
00:07:22 --> 00:07:27 Like, you know, what made them different from, let's say, Patti LaBelle or Stevie
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 Wonder or, you know, some of the other artists that, you know,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 we hear a lot of people talk about?
00:07:32 --> 00:07:38 Yeah. Well, Luther was definitely an influence. I remember when the first time,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 the very first time I heard Never Too Much on the radio when I was a young kid.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 And I just remember thinking to myself, who is that?
00:07:46 --> 00:07:50 Right so his voice always did something like you know it it's just like my my
00:07:50 --> 00:07:55 my antennas went up like yo that voice is just it i knew it wasn't donny hathaway
00:07:55 --> 00:07:58 i knew it wasn't areetra franklin wasn't you know it wasn't diana ross,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:03 and so you know i was in a band you know growing up and so i was always kind
00:08:03 --> 00:08:09 of musically musically inclined and listened to a lot of music so when i started trying to sing,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:14 i would sing along to luther and i'm kind of same thing with whitney you know
00:08:14 --> 00:08:18 as I kind of grew in my musical ability, so to speak,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 I would just kind of try to grab more stuff from different artists.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:27 And, but Luther was always the one I kind of gravitated back toward.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:31 And, you know, when I lived in San Antonio, I started coming up with a concept
00:08:31 --> 00:08:36 for a show and the two, the music director and his wife, they said,
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 Hey, you know, you got this great long list.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:44 Of artists that you want to sing, but Luther, you got mostly Luther on here.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 So why don't you just do it?
00:08:46 --> 00:08:50 So that's where this show was born from. Gotcha. Okay.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 And then I guess regarding the show, you know, what kind of,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:59 you know, what, what was that first show experience?
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 Like, you know, what, was it a lot of nerves? Were you confident?
00:09:02 --> 00:09:09 Was it kind of, Was it in one of your hometowns where you had a lot of supporters? Was it overseas or...
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 Well, the very first show that I ever did, the Luther tribute,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:20 the very first Luther tribute I ever did was in San Antonio when I used to live in San Antonio, Texas.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:28 And we had I had a small venue and it was like 130, 135 seats, something like that.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:35 And, you know, I was very nervous because about a few days before the show,
00:09:36 --> 00:09:41 the venue called and said, hey, man, you sold all of these 130 plus tickets,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:45 you know, so the support system was great. You know what I mean?
00:09:46 --> 00:09:50 With my fraternity brothers, Alpha Phi Alpha, people that I worked with,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:54 you know, people that knew me from, I was doing plays down there as well,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 you know, musical theater.
00:09:56 --> 00:10:01 And we just had a lot of support, man. So the nerves are always, you know, always get me.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:04 But it's just, hey, man, you got to go out and do it. You know what I'm saying?
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 Right, right. Hey, Leonard, let me interrupt you.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:16 One of our listeners went to that show in San Antonio because she lives down
00:10:16 --> 00:10:19 there. Remember, we have that crew down there in Texas, right?
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 Claudette Williams and that group.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:28 And Claudette, I told Claudette that a friend of mine was performing down there
00:10:28 --> 00:10:33 in Texas. He was doing a Luther show. So they pulled up to the show. Yes, she did. Oh, wow.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:37 And I remember talking to her, too. Yeah, that's right. That's right.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 I remember talking to her. told her that you were doing right here.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 She said, oh, I wish I could go. I wish I could go.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 So, but yeah, so she pulled up on him.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:54 But she's been like her, we have a group that listed down there in Texas that
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 they pulled up to the show. Love it, man.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:04 And that just proves to me, man, that this is really a small world. Yeah, it is.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:07 Yeah, yeah. Go ahead, Leonard. Okay.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:14 So I guess after the military, how did you transition? Was it from the military,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:21 then you were in Atlanta? And is that when you were kind of working with Byron Cage? Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 Yeah. So, so when I got out of the Air Force, I did about six years in the Air
00:11:25 --> 00:11:30 Force and I wanted to move to Atlanta because Atlanta was popping back then.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 This was before the Olympics. So, you know what I mean? This,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:37 this is 94, 94 was when I got out and moved down there and, you know,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:41 they were getting up for the Olympics. So man, everything, everybody,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:44 anybody was, you know, was coming to Atlanta at that time.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:50 And I joined my church down there was called New Birth Missionary Baptist Church,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 and that was under Bishop Eddie Long at the time.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 Oh, OK. Yeah, yeah.
00:11:55 --> 00:11:59 And Byron Cage was the minister of music there. And, you know,
00:11:59 --> 00:12:03 just got involved, started singing in a choir, praise team.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:12 And Byron had he if you looked at the first Byron Cage and Purpose album is him and four ladies.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:22 Right. And after the first album, that group Purpose kind of disbanded and he created another group.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:26 And it was Guys and Girls on the second album. So he asked me,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 if I wanted to be a part of the group and I was like, Hey man,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:33 you know, if you need me, I'm, I'm, I'm, Hey, put me in coach.
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 Tag me in. Yeah.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 I just went from there, man. So it was a great experience, man.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:45 And then, you know, not only from working with him, but also some of the other artists.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:49 Yeah. Now I guess during your singing and performing journey,
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 did you have any setbacks?
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 I know a lot of times we always hear performers talk about,
00:12:55 --> 00:12:59 you know, I guess a couple of crossroads that they had to go through where,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:04 you know, maybe it was pressure from like family relationships about,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:10 you know, maybe doing something else or, you know, maybe if it was just self-doubt
00:13:10 --> 00:13:15 where you're like, okay, like, you know, I know this is where I should be. I'm not here yet.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:20 Did you ever go through any trials and tribulations like that during your journey
00:13:20 --> 00:13:24 where, you know, maybe pressure from the outside, maybe your own,
00:13:25 --> 00:13:30 you know, pressure standards from the inside that kind of, you know, make you reconsider.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:36 Oh man, always, man, always. And, and, and I'll say this, like I did the,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 the first Luther tribute is this was shoot.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:45 This was like 2019, right? So this, this here, this show here has been around
00:13:45 --> 00:13:48 for a while. This is just my first time doing it here in San Antonio.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 I'm here in Delaware, Wilmington.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:55 But from, that was 2019.
00:13:55 --> 00:14:01 It had been two or three years since I mentioned to you my music director and
00:14:01 --> 00:14:04 his wife who presented, you know, doing the Luther Tribute.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:09 I first moved to San Antonio in 2016. They approached me then to say,
00:14:09 --> 00:14:13 hey, you want to put together a show, do a show? You know, this is what we work on. This is what we do.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:20 And it took me that like two and a half, three years almost to finally come
00:14:20 --> 00:14:22 back to them and say, hey, I'm finally ready to do it.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:27 You know, because you're always filled with that doubt. And then it's always,
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 you know, how can I make this work? How can I do it?
00:14:30 --> 00:14:34 And then, you know, it's just like I always joke at my shows.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:39 I'm like, you know, I appreciate y'all for coming out because y'all don't have my album on y'all shelf.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:46 You know what I'm saying? So so and you could be doing anything this particular
00:14:46 --> 00:14:50 night. And you chose it chose tonight to spend with me. And I appreciate it.

00:15:35 --> 00:15:40 We go from start to finish this show will cover every album from,
00:15:41 --> 00:15:44 almost every album let me put it like that almost every album from luther's
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 first album to his very last,
00:15:47 --> 00:15:51 and so get ready to go on a journey we try to make it like a roller coaster
00:15:51 --> 00:15:56 you know we're going up with yeah yeah you jam we jam it oh now now i can get
00:15:56 --> 00:15:58 close to my lady i can get close to you know,

00:16:45 --> 00:16:48 Yes, definitely, man. And then I'll tell you, man, because one thing I tell
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 like the band and the singers.
00:16:50 --> 00:16:53 No matter what happens tonight, we're going to have fun. Right.
