On this episode of Newz and Trendz with Dave and Len, Dave and Len tackle sports, employment disparities, a bizarre crime story, Black history, and a little brain-teasing fun.
They kick things off with tennis stars Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff, who share advice for U.S. Open newcomers and offer insight into what first-time players and fans should know about the tournament.
For “Asking for a Friend,” Dave and Len dig into the challenges Black Americans face in today’s job market, including the length of time it can take Black women to find new employment. They also discuss concerns surrounding AI and hiring algorithms, and how technology intended to streamline recruiting can reproduce or amplify biases that disadvantage Black job seekers.
The conversation takes a wild turn with the story of a fake professional basketball player accused of stealing a $90,000 BMW from a valet.
Finally, Dave’s Corner puts Len—and everyone listening—to the test with some fun math questions.
Then, Len puts Dave to the test with the CultureCheck Question of the Day: In June 2020, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser had what phrase painted in giant yellow letters on 16th Street near the White House? The answer: ???
It’s another episode packed with Newz, Trendz, Black culture, laughs, conversation, and a little friendly competition with Dave and Len.

[00:01:23] I'm hanging out with my partner, Mr. Leonard Yeo. What's going on, sir? Hey, Dave. Everything is good. This is Leonard Yeo, CEO of National Black Guide, DelawareBlack.com, Black Media Expert, Culture Check Founder, all-around good guy. How goes it, Dave? Got that part in, huh? Yeah, yeah. Got it fit in. Everything's well. Everything's well. I went on there and did another category. I'm trying to remember what I always forget.
[00:01:50] Yeah, I was eight out of ten on that one, too. I'm trying to remember what that was. Yeah, let me know which one that is so I can go in and lower your score. Yeah. But anyway, everything good, man. Everything good. Just had Labor Day yesterday. I hope everybody had a great Labor Day. I'm doing the things that they do. I'm doing the things that they do.
[00:02:18] It seems like every day should be Labor Day as far as I'm concerned, but that's another story. Yeah, yeah. Got to hang out yesterday with some of the politicians. Our Labor Day parade and rally and picnic was yesterday at Banning Park for all of the union, for all of our union affiliates and union members.
[00:02:45] And the governor was, you know, the governor was there, the mayor was there, and you had all the council people and all the new people running. And it's so interesting when they show up to things because they're so nicey-nice and they're very accommodating and very easy and approachable, you know, and all that stuff.
[00:03:10] Wait till this week gets over. And, you know, as far as the early voting and the primaries go, and then we'll see what happens in November. Mm-hmm. So, but, you know, it was interesting. It definitely was interesting, you know, just watching them in that element, you know. Gotcha. Did you do anything yesterday?
[00:03:37] No, so yesterday I actually, I laid in bed half the day, took a nap half the day. The only thing I productive I did yesterday, I made it to the gym in the morning. And then everything else just went downhill, you know, just resting and relaxing. We had the seafood feast on Sunday. So, you know, it turned out a decent small group, but, you know, everybody ate their butts off.
[00:04:05] So, you know, the weekend was well, no complaints. And, you know, I'm happy because, of course, today I locked up the pool. You know, it won't see the light of, well, it'll see the light of day, but people won't feel the water anymore this year. And I'll probably officially, you know, drain it some and close it this week. So, I'm excited. You know, that's one less thing I got to worry about.
[00:04:31] So, do you, excuse me, do you think when the, when you guys close up the pool, do people, do people, do they take people get upset or whatever? Are they missing it or did they already stop a lot of people that were coming through using the pool? Had they already stopped using it? I feel like a lot of people had already kind of stopped using it.
[00:04:59] Every year or the past three years, I've always left it open later because one, a little bit of laziness. And then people were like, oh, we still want to go to the pool. The weather's still nice. And Dave, you would not believe the drop off after Labor Day. And I mean, maybe it's a school thing too, because the kids aren't even out there during the daytime. But the pool's just empty. And every year I regret it. I'm like, you know what? I should have just closed it right after Labor Day. So, this year I'm not going to regret it.
[00:05:29] Okay. I'll put it like that. Okay. Well, I mean, you know, I guess people are, I guess, tired by that time. You know, I think that, you know, a lot of people I know, I have a friend who works at a hotel down in Virginia. And I was talking to him yesterday.
[00:05:53] And he was telling me about how he said, man, he said, that pool was packed yesterday. He said, he said, everybody, he said, and they keep it open like an hour past the time, you know. And he said, man, even right up until the time that they were, you know, it was time to close the pool, they had people in that pool. Oh, wow. And it was getting, you know, getting dark at that time, you know.
[00:06:20] So, you know, so he said, he said that, so when he told, when they, when the lifeguard said, okay, everybody out. They said, you know, people, people were giving them a hard time and so forth. Oh, I'm sure. He said, are you sure? This is going to be the last day we can't come back tomorrow? No. But they got an indoor pool. Oh, okay. Smaller. It's smaller.
[00:06:46] But it's, you know, but for some reason, everybody always like doing the outside, I guess, because of the sun and everything. So, but they have a, they got a small indoor pool too. So I'm sure that'd be utilized as well. Yeah, I'm sure. Yeah. Yeah. So, but, you know, that's what y'all got. I guess that's y'all's next project to get an indoor pool, man. So there you go. Not us. Not for us. Anyway.
[00:07:16] All right. Well, I guess we can go ahead and get started with the show. We got a few things we wanted to talk to you guys about today. Okay. I came across this. Are you, do you watch tennis at all? In general, no, but I had watched some of the U.S. Open. Okay. All right. Normally, well, a lot of us will watch the U.S. Open because of, you know, it's here and, you know, New York.
[00:07:45] And, you know, of course, we always want to see American win that particular tournament. But, of course, that doesn't happen that often. It's not since Serena and Venus were, you know, in their prime. Right. You know, so.
[00:08:03] But I came across this article because, you know, more and more of us are showing up in the audience at the Open and other tennis tournaments. But especially at the Open, that's like a real big one that celebrities show up to is at the Open. Right.
[00:08:25] So there was this list that kind of was put together by Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff, who toured the, you know, top female tennis player out there. Of course, both of them happen to be minority. And they said.
[00:08:51] These are some things that you should know before going to the U.S. Open. So you want to go and be a spectator. And I just wanted to go over that because I do watch tennis from time to time. I've been watching some of the I've been watching a lot of the Open. Actually, I've seen quite a few of the matches. And let's see. And so they got do's and don'ts out there.
[00:09:22] And they one of the things they said is they prefaced this by saying because we love you, we have to let you know where it on the street is. The world class event turned into a influencer circuit circus because there's been a lot of influencers going there and taking pictures and, you know, causing a whole bunch of noise over there, too. But right.
[00:09:48] And they said chatter about some of the unconventional behavior was so loud. Even tennis, the superstars Naomi Osaka and Coco golf weighed in. And they wanted to remind us of things that you need to pay attention to. One of the things Coco said that you must follow tennis etiquette. You know, there's just certain things you do and certain things that you don't do.
[00:10:17] At a tennis match, it says if you are she said if you were invited to the red carpet. You wouldn't show up in jeans, she said. She said while she is excited to see a different demographic at the U.S. Open. She urges new fans to respect the tennis etiquette. Try not to talk too loud, she suggests. After expressing that she.
[00:10:46] She's one of the most. I mean, one of the more lenient athletes. If I had to pick noise over flash. No flash, she said. That actually does mess us up a little bit. So she's talking about when they're serving and stuff like that. That. You know. The noise. They hear people talking and they hear what people are saying. And then people are flashing using cameras with flashes.
[00:11:14] And that throws them off as well. So. Naomi Osaka said it's common courtesy to read up on the sport. Naomi Osaka on the upside and downsides of the. USTA inviting a lot of influencers to the to come out and check the open out. If you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport.
[00:11:41] I feel like it's common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette. It could be a good thing for you. And. You know. She said that her and golf both kind of knows that the. Behavior was off. A bit on a lot of the people who were in. In the stands, the spectators and everything. Because it was a point that things got pretty rowdy. Especially during Naomi Osaka.
[00:12:11] And. You know. You know. So. Another thing they said. Learn the rhythm of the game. This is very important. They said because. A lot of people. Tend not to be. Paying attention. Or. You know. You know. Or do a lot of talking.
[00:12:40] When they shouldn't be talking. Or. They don't follow. You know. The way the ball moves. A lot. It says you don't need to become a tennis expert. Overnight. But knowing the basis. Like. When a point starts. It ends. What a changeover. Is. You know. And the changeover. And the changeover. Is.
[00:13:10] When they're changing. Chords. From side to side. And when players. And also. When they switch sides. And. They said. It will take. It will make for. Much better. Spectator. Experience. As Naomi. Reiterated. It is. Simply. Common. Courtesy. To inform yourself. On the. Expectations. Of the event. Now. One thing. I'm going to say.
[00:13:40] There seems to be a common. Thread here. That. You know. That. Made them even talk about this stuff. Because this is stuff. That happens during their matches. What's the common thread. Between the two of them. They're both minority. Tennis players. Tennis players. A lot of this stuff. Does not go on. During the other matches. If you follow me. So. Now. Of course. They're very.
[00:14:09] Two of the most popular people there. But they're just saying. You just gotta. You know. If you're going to be there. And especially. If you're new. If you're new to the sport. You gotta just follow the rules. It says. There's a. The walk around. Doing a point. If it's one thing. You want to get a tennis player. Throwing off that game. Is start moving around. When they're. When they're. You know. You know exactly what I'm talking about. When a point is going on. Because. I know. I'm watching on TV.
[00:14:39] And I see somebody get up. And I said. Oh. I know they didn't like that. You know. So. So. They said. They said. Need to grab a drink. Or use the bathroom. Or find your seat. Try. To time it around. Changeover. Or between sets. Getting up. And moving through. The stands. While. Players are actively competing. Can distract them. Particularly. If. If you're in. Their line. Of sight.
[00:15:08] They hate that man. Uh. Somebody did that to Coco. Um. In a match I was watching. Coco went over to it. And said. Um. Did you have to get up. At that particular time? So. But. He was friendly about it. But he was like. Come on now. Come on. Come on. Right. Yeah. Chair when the point. Is over. You know. So. You know. Um.
[00:15:38] They said. The U.S. Open. Isn't exactly known. For a quiet crowd. So don't be afraid. To get excited. Just say. The screaming. Clapping. And celebrations. For. After. The point. Ended. During the rally. Let the players. Play. And while. Our favorite. Coco. Mentions. A camera flash. Is. Probably the worst. She is. She also. Isn't a big fan.
[00:16:08] Of folks. Talking. Too loudly. Yes. He said. Don't celebrate. Your opponent's. Mistake. While sports fans. Are used. To banter. Tennis. Etiquette. Draws. A stricter line. There is a difference. Between. Celebrating your players. Win. And cheering. Opponents. Double fault. Or unforced error.
[00:16:37] Applauding great tennis. Regardless of who hits. The shot. Remains good. Form. Form. Now. I know. There's one particular. Female tennis player. That. You know. People love to see. Get beat. And she happens to be. The number one. Tennis player in the world. Simple. Uh. Sabalenka. Have you ever seen this girl? No. I haven't. She's very good.
[00:17:07] But she's very arrogant. She's from. Germany or somewhere. Or. Czech. I forget which one of them. But anyway. She's. And her and Coco. Have gone at it a couple times. They used to be good buddies. But they don't seem like they're good buddies anymore. Because they be going at it. Man. So. Yeah. Um. The other thing was. Turn off your flash. Um. Bring a. A ring light. What is that?
[00:17:37] Now. That one. I didn't see. A tennis game features. Osaka came. To a switch and halt. On Monday. When the. Chair empire. Paused the match. After contested. At their content creator. Oh. In a luxury. Um. Suite. Use. Um. A portable ring lights. To film. During a play. Oh man. Okay. I see where they're going with that. So. Man.
[00:18:07] This thing. This thing is really getting serious. When they. When they're doing all this. They're setting up. And. And doing all this stuff. You know. Um. They say. Keep your phone on silent. And. Record videos. Doing. Uh. Don't record videos. During play. Find a cute. Outfit. That matches. The U.S. Open. Aesthetic. And so. They said. Wear something. You know. That. That's appropriate.
[00:18:37] For that particular time. Uh. Don't wear. Overly. Revealing. Outfits. Uh. They pinned the crowd. Uh. That a couple days. I think it was during. A Naomi. Um. Match. Leonard. I swear. You would have thought. It was that magic city. There's these two girls. At the camera court. Ah. And everything was out there. Leonard. I was like. Wow. I said. I said. I said. Now they know.
[00:19:06] They know. That people are looking at them. I said. Now. I don't know. They could have been influencers. I don't know. They could have been. But. They definitely stood out in that crowd. They definitely did. So. Um. What else they say. Do look good. Feel good. And enjoy the experience. Um. They said. You know. Come. Dress for the occasion. Grab. A. Honeydeuce.
[00:19:36] Ming. Mingle with the regulars. And. Soak it all in. Just remember. The U.S. Open. Is a sporting event. And. So. Knowing. What is suspected. Of you. As a spectator. Will make the experience. Better for everyone. Now. Like I said. I watch tennis. I watch a lot of these matches. And I can see. A lot of the stuff. That they're talking about. Going on. Now. I know you said. You. You watch it. But you don't. Watch it. Watch it.
[00:20:06] Have you ever noticed. Any of these distracting things. Going on. Doing. Doing the matches. Uh. No. So. The matches I watched. I didn't see anything. But. Of course. On social media. I did see highlights of. You know. Influencers. I think one. It was a. It was a group of influencers. And they were like doing a chant. Or a cheer. And. Uh. You could see the people. Kind of sitting underneath them. Looking very annoyed. White. White people.
[00:20:36] Mm-hmm. So. I mean. That was the only thing I saw. But you know. I do think it's interesting that. And. And. I mean. I don't discount. Naomi. Or. Coco. But. You know. I feel like. You know. All these sports. When black people start getting into them. They're going to slowly change. So like. For instance. Um. Have. Prior tennis people. Have they come out on court.
[00:21:05] Kind of dressed up like. Naomi has been. Like. I saw she. You know. She gave tribute to Alvin. Allen Iverson. Yeah. She comes out with these eccentric things. Which. Are probably not the normal. For tennis as well. So you know. She's kind of changing the game. But. You know. I guess what. She doesn't expect the game. To also change around her as well. Yeah. Yeah. But I mean. Is she doing anything different. From what.
[00:21:37] Serena Williams did. I'm. I'm not sure. Did. Did Serena come out. Dressed in like. Elaborate outfits. To like. Remember. But she came out. In those tight. Outfits. You know. She had the different colors. She would wear the black. And she would wear. You know. Everything was formed. You know. You know. Serena had a different body. Than all the other tennis players. So. Mm-hmm. You know. So. Everybody thought. He was like. Flo Joe was. Back in the day. You know. Serena. Flo Joe had that.
[00:22:07] One legged outfit. Um. Um. And. What else. Uh. You. I mean. They're telling you. Not to wear jeans. Why? Uh. Yeah. They're telling you. They're telling you to come in. You know. They. There's a certain. Like. For years. There was a certain type of dress. That tennis players. Would. Would. Would wear. I mean. Um. The spectators. Would wear. And they would normally come in. You know.
[00:22:37] In pastel colors. Um. You know. Seersucker type suits. And jackets. And. Uh. Cotton. You know. The cotton jackets. Stuff like that. They would. Nowadays. You know. We got a whole different crowd of people. Coming to these games. And. These batches. And they're not. You know. Etiquette is out the window. You know. So. It's just different now. Yeah. Um. And. And you know.
[00:23:07] I guess I'm just saying. I feel like. Etiquette is just going to change. With the times. So. I mean. Like. I definitely understand. The flashes. And. But they. If I'm out there. I'm going to be recording. I ain't going to have my flash on. I'm not going to be yelling. But. You know. Like. I'm going to want to record some plays. Yeah. That makes sense. That makes sense. I mean. You definitely want to do that. But you got to. They're just telling you to pick your times. Yeah. You know.
[00:23:36] They're not telling you not to do it. They just said. You know. You just got to be careful. When you do it. Yeah. And I also saw. They said that. They invited. 100 influencers. This year. And they said. They're not going to do that again. Yeah. Because they said. Look. They had. There was something. They had to kick out of there. Yeah. You know. So. I mean. It's. You know. It. It definitely got a little. You know. Definitely. Wasn't.
[00:24:06] What they thought. It was going to be. Because. People. Got carried away. And that's not. That's not what they want to have. At these. At these tennis events. You know. They want to make sure. That people. People. Come. And they're doing. What they're supposed to be doing. As opposed to. Causing all the commotion. That they've been doing. Because they've been taking over. The matches. You know. So. But.
[00:24:36] I guess we'll see. I mean. Because. One thing. I will say. I think. They're in the quarterfinals now. Both Coco. And. And. Naomi. Have both reached the quarterfinals. So. Look like they might be on a collision course. To play each other too. Right. What they normally do. In these matches. They always have us. Knock each other off. So. That's another thing. Oh. Did I say that out loud? I should have said that. Okay.
[00:25:06] Because like I said. Man. I'll be watching these things. Man. I'll be like. Why do you put her in the same bracket? I didn't understand that. But I do now. Believe me. I do. Well. Hold on. I thought they were in different brackets. Because when I was looking at the. The brackets. They looked like they were on opposite sides. Of the bracket. Yeah. They are. But. But they still. Scheduled. I mean. You know. There's a possibility. They're going to end up playing. You know. So. Yeah. Yeah. So. But we'll see. We'll see how that goes. You know. They. You know. They don't.
[00:25:35] They don't want one of us winning. I mean. They. We'll see what happens. But. You know. I'm just joking. I'm just kidding. Yeah. No. I will say. I was pleasantly surprised. Because. You know. I don't watch that much tennis. Period. But. I did catch like. Three of. Tiafo's matches. Yeah. He's played well. He's done very well. Yeah. He. Now. That's another thing. Because. I know. Him. And the guy.
[00:26:07] Shelton. I've been Shelton. Yeah. He. Yeah. He's hooked up with Dennis Rodman's daughter. Yeah. Trinity. Yeah. So. I know. He plays. With. My man. Orozco today. Okay. Yes. And. So that's going to be a big match. You know. So. And. I forget who Tiafo plays. But. Yeah. He's been playing very well though.
[00:26:36] He has been. Okay. Uh. Moving on. On to our next story. Now. I know. You don't really do a lot with. Do you? No. I mean. I probably need to be on there more. But I just. Have not. I'm a little surprised you're not. Considering all that you have going on. That could be a very big thing. For you. In several different ways.
[00:27:05] With everything that you have going on. On there. I just noticed that you never really had a. Real. Presence on there. No. And. I've been on there for years. And. But there's been something recently. That's been coming up. That's been talking about. How. LinkedIn. And. You know. And I just wanted to have a discussion about this. How LinkedIn. Does it seem to be serving. The black community.
[00:27:33] When it comes to job searching. The way. That the other communities. Seem to. You know. Be served. As far as when it's getting. As far as employment is concerned. The numbers are relatively low. When it comes to. Blacks. Getting hired. Via LinkedIn. As opposed to. The other races.
[00:28:03] And. I just wanted. To. Just. Just kind of. Talk about that. Because. I wanted to get to your input. I know. Like I said. I know. You don't really. Do a lot on LinkedIn. But have you had any. Experience with LinkedIn. As far as. Trying to get employees. Or having your. Your. Employment. Information.
[00:28:33] Out there. For people. Who might be looking for jobs. Or anything like that. Have you ever dealt with them at all? No. I haven't. So. On that note. I don't have any. Experience. Good or bad. Bad. Okay. Do you go on there. And read any. The stuff. The articles. Now. They will have. How to things. Or. You know. You'll see. Like. Ted talks on there. And stuff like that. Have you ever used. The site. Yourself.
[00:29:03] A lot. To do. Different. You know. The different things. That are out there. For you to do it. No. So. If I go on there. I'm looking to promote something. Or. Check messages. Or. I may. You know. I may scroll through the feed. A little bit. And. Just see who's saying what. But. No. I'm not on there. Reading articles. I mean. Every once in a while. I'll go on there. And look. And look to connect with somebody. Or. You know. Message somebody. For an immediate need. But.
[00:29:33] I'm definitely not on there. On a regular basis. Marketing. Myself. Now. Why. Why is that? Why do you think. You've never. Felt. That you need it. Or. Never thought to use it. I'll put it that way. You know. I'm. Really. I'm not sure. Because. I used to do a lot more. On LinkedIn. I. Think. I think. I may put. Less. On LinkedIn. And.
[00:30:03] Just to be honest. I feel like. I just. I don't have any. I have less content. To put on LinkedIn. So. I'm just there. Less. You know. I feel. And I could be right or wrong. Probably wrong. But I feel like I have more content. To post on. Like. Facebook. Or. Instagram. Which kind of keeps me there more. Okay. All right. I get it. I get it. I get it. I get it. I want to read.
[00:30:32] I want to read something. To kind of. Add to what I was saying. As far as the. Black job seekers. Who. Go on LinkedIn. LinkedIn. I mean. You know. Of course. You know. A lot of people use. Indeed. I know you guys use. Indeed. As well. And a couple other search engines. As far as employment. But LinkedIn. Is also. A place that a lot of people rely on. As far as finding jobs. As well. Let's see.
[00:31:02] This was. Back in July. The U.S. And this was just. The United States. Added 57,000 jobs. On. LinkedIn. Especially for minorities. And in particular. Those who are black. So.
[00:31:31] They said when the labor market. Compresses. Black workers pay. A compounding tax. That never. Shows up. In the headlines. Which is why. Are askew. The way that they are. They said. The national black. White. Unemployment rate. In quarter one. For 2026. Is 2.1. To.
[00:32:01] One. Percent. Meaning black workers. Are more. Than twice as likely. As white workers. To be unemployed. Right now. We're no longer talking. Lagging. Indicators. That's. At our starting line. So. This is right at the. In the first quarter. So the first quarter. Is. You know. January. February. March. Okay. Okay. And.
[00:32:31] It says. Once we lose a job. We stay. Unemployed. Longer. Black women. Spent. An average. Of. 18. Five. Weeks. Unemployed. Oh. Wow. And. This was back in September. 2025. White men. Spent. 10. Three. Weeks. That's more than. Eight extra weeks. Of no. Paycheck. No benefits. No forward. Motion.
[00:33:01] Two months. Of. Run. Way. That are. White peers. Don't have. To plan for. I thought that was very interesting. You know. That particular. Particular note. And then they said. Three hundred. And twenty two. Thousand. Black workers. Have been. Out of work. For twenty seven. Weeks. Or more. That's. That is. Twenty one percent. Of all. Unemployed. Black Americans.
[00:33:32] One out of five. Long enough. To burn through. Unemployment. Insurance. In most states. And to absolutely. Unravel. A household. Now there was a theory. I read. Not too long ago. And you get on. Unemployment. If you. If you're able to get on it. You get it for six months. And then. If you're. If you can get the extension. After the six months.
[00:34:01] If they offer it still. You can get it for. For an additional. Thirteen weeks. They're saying. The way. That things are set up. Now. That the. Unemployment. They know. That the unemployment. Is not going to last. As long as you're out. Out. Out of a job. Right. Meaning. Meaning. That.
[00:34:31] You know. It's just so hard. Finding. Now. They said. There's work. Everywhere. I mean. When you. When you go online. There's work. Everywhere. But. Are they really. Really. Paying attention. To who's applying. For these jobs. It appears. It appears to be so. What's your thoughts? Yeah. So. Well. One thing you said. I was curious about. I know you said. White men. Out of work. 10 weeks. Black women. Out of work. 18 weeks.
[00:35:01] I wonder. I wonder what that stat is. For black men. Does it mention that? No. They didn't. They didn't give. They didn't give. The black men. They didn't give the status. For. The stats. For black men. But they always say. That black women. Seem to be. Out of work. Longer. When they use it. So. I'm. I'm assuming. Somewhere in the middle. Maybe. Maybe. I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty sure. It's. 10 weeks. Yeah. So. I mean. I guess.
[00:35:31] Regarding everything else. You said. Two. So. Two things. That kind of. Came to my mind. Besides. The black men. Was. One. You had mentioned. Everyone. You know. You go around. And it looks like. Everybody's hiring. So. In your mind. You know. A lot of times. You're thinking. Okay. Everyone's hiring. Why does. Everyone not have a job. And. I was talking to. Somebody. And. You know. Dave. It's funny.
[00:36:00] I never really even thought about this. But apparently people do it. There's a lot of employers. Who are. Always. Always. Have an ad out. Because they. Always. Want to see. Just in case. That. That. Best. Person. Applies. For the job. And when I say that. I'm basically saying. They. They keep an ad out. But they're not always hiring. You know. They're hiring. At that. Top 1%. Comes. But if that one.
[00:36:30] If that top 1%. Doesn't come. They just keep that ad out there. So. I think there's a lot of companies. Like that. And Dave. Even at the campground. Like we. We haven't done it. But we're not opposed to it. Because it's like. You know. If you have an employee staff. And they're. 80%. You know. So effective. And you know. Not to say. You want to let them go. But let's say. Someone comes across. Who's 100% effective. You know. That.
[00:36:59] That may be somebody. We want to replace them with. So. That makes sense. I think that. Yeah. I think there's a lot of companies. That do that. And then on the second. Well. Well. Let me. Let me just say. Something. Before you finish that statement. Something you said. I know. Was like. A lot of these larger companies. A certain amount of jobs. On a regular basis.
[00:37:30] Each quarter. For. A certain quota. That they had to list. So. A lot of times. Yeah. A lot of those jobs. Might be out there. You might see them out there. And you might see them from. The same company all the time. But they were. A lot of times. They've been made up positions. Yeah. But anyway. I agree. Yeah. The second thing. I was going to say. Just when you're talking about. Let's say LinkedIn.
[00:37:59] Indeed. Any of the other. Zip recruiter. And people. Not being hired. Specifically. Black people. Specifically. Black women. You know. Dave. I think we know. The algorithm. And AI. Are not on our side. You know. Because. You know. To be honest. I wouldn't be surprised. If they're flagging. HBCUs. They're flagging. You know. Like HBCUs. In the education. They're flagging names. Like.
[00:38:29] You know. Shaniqua. Oh yeah. You know. Madea. And. You know. Flagging a lot of these names. Where. Of course. They. You know. They say. Oh. Well. You know. You didn't fit our criteria. But. You know. In our mind. We kind of know. You know. What criteria. We're probably not fitting. So. Yeah. But what's funny is. Unfair advantage. Unfair disadvantage.
[00:38:59] That a lot of us have as well. Because we're not even getting. You know. A seat at the table. To present ourselves. Because. You know. Maybe they see. Delaware State University. Maybe they see. Minority Studies. Maybe they see. Black Student Union. As like a. You know. Like a. An affiliate group. So. You know. They may just be cutting those out. From the beginning. Without even giving them a chance. Well. That's true. Because we know. We know that kind of stuff. Does happen. I mean.
[00:39:28] You know. We. We have. You know. With the popularity. And we just talked about this. Last week. Of the HBCUs. Right now. I guess it's at. Probably. It's all time high. Right about now. Right. I mean. From your estimation. Don't you think so? Yeah. Yeah. At least social media popular. Yeah. Yeah. Social media. And. We can. We can thank social media. A lot.
[00:39:59] To a lot of that. For a lot of that. Because. You know. They definitely. They definitely have been. Highlighted. On social media. Um. And. With that being said. You know. Of course. You know. With all the DEI stuff. Because. Is it a coincidence. That all this DEI. DEI stuff. Started happening. Right around the time. We started noticing. The uptick. Of the HBCUs. Did you.
[00:40:28] I mean. I just think that. That's not a coincidence. That. That. It was definitely something. That kind of happened. Right around the same time. And that they. They wanted to make sure. They wanted to make sure. That they try to figure out a way. To try to curb it. But what they were doing. Was a lot of these people. Who. Were at the PWIs. Um.
[00:40:59] Who. Programs were getting eliminated. Because of DEI. Were going to. The HBCUs now. And say. If you're going to treat us that way. We might as well be with our people. You know. And. So. And a lot of these. Top HBCUs. I watched a couple. Football games over the weekend. Leonard. They were two of the best games I've seen. This. You know. Already. You know. Well. I. I. I. I know that.
[00:41:29] Morgan State game. Wasn't one of the best games you've seen. Um. No. No. That was crazy. That was crazy. But. I mean. You know. But. There's definitely. Um. Definitely talent out there. It definitely is. Talent out there. And. You know. Um. They're going to have to. They're going to have to definitely. Whether. As far as the workforce is concerned. You know. We're still having. Trouble getting these top.
[00:41:59] Top jobs. Because. I mean. Even though we have a lot of black executives. And so forth now. You know. They're still holding on to. The top positions. In a lot of these companies. You know. And. You know. But. I just think that. You know. LinkedIn is probably. You know. We need to pay attention to. These. These hiring sites. And then. Probably take a look at all of them. Indeed. And. Career builders. All of these companies. All these sites. That are.
[00:42:30] You know. And seeing who's getting employed. And who's not getting employed. And what's it based on. I might have to do. A little more investigating. To find out. What the. Where the numbers are. What they're based. And the numbers on. As far as. Who's getting these jobs. And who isn't. You know. So that's something. That's something. I think I'm going to dig a little deeper into. Because. You know. Supposedly. When you. When you look out there. You know. The president is up there talking about. You know. We have.
[00:42:59] You know. We got plenty of. Jobs out there for people. And. You know. This is a good time. For people to work. But when you. Who. What people are they talking about? Right. Right. Exactly. You know. So. That's important. So. All right. I'm going to move on. To our next. Story. I don't know. There seem to be a lot of fake. Stuff going on these days. We had a fake football player. And now we got a fake basketball player.
[00:43:29] A fake pro basketball player. Allegedly stole. 90k. A 90,000 dollar. BMW. From. A valet. Okay. It says. A man accused. Of posing as a pro basketball player. Apparently. Took his. Baller. Straight to. The valet stand. Where cops say. He drove off. In a 90,000 dollar. BMW.
[00:43:59] That wasn't his. This happened in Savannah. Georgia. Says. The suspect. Walked into. The Hyatt Regency. Savannah. Around 1230 a.m. And his picture. Is all over the place. Leonard. I mean. You know. At least. Disguise yourself. This guy didn't disguise. Disguise himself. Or anything. He just. And they got pictures of him. All over the place. This was on August the 14th. That this happened. He grabbed some belongings. From a white Audi.
[00:44:28] Then handed. Ballet workers. A ticket for. Gray. 2026. BMW. Excess. According to. The investigators. He told employees. He was a professional. Basketball player. With several cards. At the hotel. And apparently. Sold the story. Well enough. To get the keys. And peel. Out. In the BMW. The problem is. Did he peel out. Or he just left.
[00:44:59] They said. He peeled out. In the BMW. Yeah. And knowing. He's a young guy. He probably peeled out. You know what I mean. So. Problem is. Police said. The SUV. Actually belonged. To a dealership. And was being used. As a loaner. By a hotel guest. The dealership. Later tracked it. All the way. To Myrtle Beach. South Carolina. Wow. From Savannah. Georgia. Now. Okay. There.
[00:45:29] And the alleged car hopping. Didn't stop there. Investigators. Later learned. Um. That. Learned. The white. 2025. Audi A5. He had been seen. Using. Was. Itself being reported. Stolen the day before. Toss found it. Unlocked. In the hotel's parking lot. Later that morning. Police also believe. The same guy. May be tied.
[00:45:59] To another valet. At a Savannah. Hotel. Earlier in August. When a guest. Toyota. CHR. Disappeared. After someone. Allegedly. Used her. Retrieval code. Given to her. From the valet service. Hours before. She requested the car. So this is sounding like. To me. This guy. Just was a thrill seeker. To me. Yeah. Yeah. Savannah police. Have released surveillance.
[00:46:30] Images of the suspect. Described as a man. In his 20s or 30s. As they try to identify. Oh. So they haven't caught this guy. I thought they said. They caught him. But they got all kinds of pictures. Of this dude. He's everywhere. You know. And he's a young guy. So. You know. So. I think. This is like. A thrill thing. For him. To just go up. And just. Steal cars. At a valet. From a valet.
[00:47:00] Service. Just because. He can get away with it. And drive nice cars. Right. You know. I remember. I sold. Remember. I don't know if you remember. I told you. I sold cars for about six months. I hated it. I hated it. With a passion. The worst job I've ever had. People were okay. But. I mean. Well. Some of them were. But that's a very cutthroat business.
[00:47:29] Very cutthroat. The only thing that was cool about it. Was being able to drive all the different cars. You know. And. And. And then. Even. If I wanted one. I mean. They would allow us to. Take a. You know. We could drive any car we wanted on the line. And keep it as our personal car. You know. Oh really? Oh wow. Yeah. But you. Yeah. The only thing you had to do. Was.
[00:47:59] You had to. They gave. They. You got $250. Every month. Not to drive. One of their cars. But. If you drove one of their cars. You didn't get the $250. Gotcha. So. That was the kind of. You know. So. If you didn't. Like. If you didn't have a good month. Selling cars. Then you were just driving that car. You wasn't getting any money. You know what I mean? Yeah.
[00:48:29] Yeah. So. That $250. Was always going to be guaranteed. As long as you wanted to drive. One of their cars. So. So. But. You know. It was really nice. To be able. You know. So. When I go out on test drives. Or whatever. I'm at. Man. This car is nice. You know. So forth and so forth. So I could see why. People would want to. Do something crazy like that. But that's just. That. You know. And this was a black. Gentleman. A young guy. You know.
[00:48:58] But the fact that he even. Came up with that type of. Thing. That's one of steel cars. Like that. This says a lot about. Where we are today. Because. Every. Everything is easy. Everything's got to be quick. You know. Why steal the car. Why not just go out there. You know. He came up with this elaborate story. About being a pro basketball player. And apparently. Has told it a couple times. And been able to get away with it. Yeah. I'm sure. And he looks like a basketball player. He's tall and lanky.
[00:49:28] You know. I wonder if he used the best. Because they didn't say here. Whether he used a famous. Basketball player's name. Or anything. Anything. Oh. You said he did. Or you're not sure. No. It didn't say in the story. That he did. Oh. Okay. He just said he was a pro basketball player. Well. I almost feel like. You got to use a nobody's name. Because you know. You can't walk around saying. Shaquille O'Neal. Or. You know. LeBron James. Well. Or you can find. You can find. Who you look like.
[00:49:57] That has some cachet. You know. And. A person. Because you know. You know how many times. Singers and so. And people like that. That get mistaken for people all the time. You know. Right. From the common people. You know. Or common people get mistaken for singers. And so forth. I should say. So I'm pretty sure. That that's. Something that definitely could. You know. Could have happened. Easily. But it all depends on how well you sell it. And apparently this guy sold it pretty well. Well Dave.
[00:50:26] Let me answer this. This is a question I've been thinking about the whole time. You've been talking about the story. Does that valet driver get fired? I'm sure he does. Because I'm sure those people. Those people. Well. I don't know. Because. If he had certain information. Or if he. Made a lot of sense. I mean. Would they fire him? Maybe. They need to look at. Their checks and balances. As far as that's concerned.
[00:50:54] The way that they have everything set up. I mean. We've seen many movies. Where. Somebody be saying that they're waiting on their car. Somebody will walk up and take their car. How many times have you seen that in a movie? Yeah. You know. Yeah. So. I mean. That's got to be hard. That's got to be hard to kind of. Govern. On a regular basis. Is making sure people get the right car. Now. I understand. Now they're. They're doing electronic.
[00:51:26] Electronic tickets. That they give to people. People. And that ticket is tied to their car. You know. So the ticket. You know. So their car. Moves. After they get the ticket. Or whatever. That they're alerted. You know. Somehow. You know. Other than when. They request. For the car to be moved. Yeah. So I don't know. Dave. I probably. Yeah. I even think that they're a little lax. With that too. Because. Last weekend. When I went to Atlanta.
[00:51:56] We had that same thing. Kind of like the electronic ticket. Where you request your car. You request your car. And you can kind of see. When it arrives. At valet. But. One of the things. It said on the ticket. Was show this. You know. Electronic ticket. To your valet. And they. I mean. After the first time. We got the car. Nobody asked for the ticket anymore. You know what I mean. So. I mean. Granted.
[00:52:25] Maybe they recognized us. Whatever. But regardless. Those second. Third. And fourth times. We requested the car. We didn't show any type of ticket. So the safety measures. Just kind of went out the window there. Yeah. Now granted. They might have recognized us. But. We could have taken someone else's car. You know. Like. Maybe they're like. Hey. We recognize them. They stay in the hotel. But they may not have known. What kind of car. We got. If a Lamborghini pulled up. We probably could have. You know.
[00:52:55] Stop waiting. Yeah. How about that. I can see you. It's a little. The car that you have. It's a. A Nissan Sentra. And the Lamborghini. Oh yeah. That's our car over there. The Lamborghini. Let me get in there. So. You know. I think you've got the wrong ticket here. So. But. I don't know. Atlanta seems to be the place. All this is happening.
[00:53:25] I mean. Well. Georgia. I should say. All this is happening. Because that's. This other story. This story happened in Savannah. So. Yeah. So. I don't know. Maybe they need to pay attention down there. You know. So. But. I don't know. We'll see. We'll see how that story turns out. Because I'm sure we'll hear more about that. So. Yeah. Let's keep the dude out of Delaware. Period. You know. So. You know. But anyway.
[00:53:56] All right. Brings us to. Lenin's favorite part of the show. Dave's Corner. Mr. Culture Check here. I got a couple of things. I got a couple of questions for you. This is not culture check. But. Just want to see how smart you are. Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Hopefully. Okay. So I got a couple. I got. Yeah. No. Yeah. I don't know. These. These. Some day be giving these fifth graders these days. Man. That's a whole.
[00:54:26] That's. That's a mess. You know. But I got. Three plus. I'm just important. Okay. So. When does. Nine plus. Five. Equal. Two. When does. Nine. Plus. Five.
[00:54:56] Equal. Two. I have no idea. That's a. That must be an obvious trick question. It is a trick question. Because. Obviously. Nine plus five. No way can equal two. So. The answer is. When. Nine a.m. Plus.
[00:55:26] I get it. Five hours later. Okay. Eagles. Two a.m. Okay. All right. All right. All right. That was a sneaky one. Actually. Oh. Five of them for you. Okay. Okay. This number with. Any. Other. Other. And you will always get the same answer. What's the number? Hold on. Say it one more time. You should know this one.
[00:55:58] Yeah. I'm sorry. Multiply. This number with. Any other number. Say it. What? No. What'd you say? I'm like one. Oh. You going with the number one? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well it's not the number one. You said. Take another step. This number. Multiply the number with. Any. Other. Number. And you will always get the same answer.
[00:56:28] So you multiply one. You use one as a multiple. As a multiplier. You're not going to get the same answer all the time. Why not? How much is one times eight? You said. But one is the multiplier. Not the original number. I never said one. You said one. You said. I said. Multiply this number. With any. Other.
[00:56:58] And you will always get the same answer. Okay. So you're saying zero? Yes. There you go. Yeah. All right. How many sides does a circle have? How many sides? Yeah. S-I-D-E-S. How many sides? Zero. Okay. That's wrong?
[00:57:28] Is it? There's two sides. There's an inside and an outside. No comment. Let's see. You put that on coffee check. Anyway. It says. I appear once. No, I'm sorry. I appear twice in the morning. And twice in the evening. But I only appear once at night.
[00:57:58] What am I? I'll read it again. I appear twice in the morning. And twice in the evening. But I only appear once at night. What am I? Another trick question, by the way. I don't know what. The letter N. So there's two Ns in the word evening.
[00:58:26] And one N in the word night. He's over here shaking his ear, folks. Okay. All right. All right. I got one more. Okay. This is a good one here. Use an only addition. How can you get to the number 1,000? By using only the number 8.
[00:58:58] By only using the number 8? Yeah. And you got to add using the number 8 to get to 1,000. Okay. Are we saying how many times does 8 go into 1,000? Is that what you're saying? Well, no. It's saying, listen to this. Using only addition.
[00:59:25] How can you get to 1,000 by using only 8? So you can, how many 8? Because keep in mind, you know, there's no number you can multiply. I mean, add 8 to that's going to give you exactly 1,000. But there's a way that they're saying that you can come up with 1,000 by using the number 8.
[00:59:55] This might be too hard for you. But only using addition? Yes. You can't use multiplication. You got to use addition. Okay. Let me think about this real quick. Okay. Let's see. This is the engineer, by the way, people who, you know, former engineer. Former. Former engineer. Let's see. I was with you. I put it there already. Let's see. Let's see if his engineer in mind, the 1% of it, is still there.
[01:00:30] This is actually a good question. And only using the number 8, right? Yeah. Mm-hmm.
[01:01:01] Yeah. This would have been tough for you. So, you would have to start out with 888 plus 88. So, that gives you... No. No. 888 plus 88 is what? 976, I think, right? Let me make sure.
[01:01:32] Let me find out you don't know your own question. Oh, I know the answer. I know you know the answer. Do you know the process? Yeah. I know the process, too. I just want to make sure. Okay. So, 888 plus 88 is... Yeah. Like I said, 976. Plus another 8 brings it to... Oh, well.
[01:02:01] Plus another 8 brings it to the 984. Plus another 8 equals 992. And one more 8 brings it to 1,000. Hold on. Say that one more time. Do that math again.
[01:02:21] 888 plus 88 plus 8 plus 8 plus 8 equals 1,000. Even. So, 88 plus... So, you start out with 976 when you add the 88.
[01:02:48] I mean, 888 plus 88. That's 976 right away. And then you add another 8. And then you add two more 8s after that. That'll give you 1,000. Now, you said Quincy's a good student. That'd be a good question for Quincy. Do you want me to ask him?
[01:03:17] Think you figured that out? Huh? Go ahead. Oh, but he heard... Did he hear everything? No. You know he got his headphones on. Okay. All right. Go ahead and answer. Let's see what he says. All right. So, I'm going to simplify the question because you made the question difficult. Quincy. Oh, my God. Here we go. Yeah. Take off your headphones real quick. All right. I have you live on the podcast.
[01:03:46] There's millions of listeners out here waiting for your answer. How many times did 8 go into 1,000? No. All right. Dave, the Jeopardy clock is ticking on him. 1,25. All right, Dave. Are you here? Yeah. Okay. He said 1,25.
[01:04:16] But Leonard, you know, that changes the whole question. No, no, no. It's still the same. 1,25. All right. Hold on. Let's see. That's right. It is. I did it on my calculator. Yeah. I'm trying to pull this up.
[01:04:46] Let's see. 1,25 times 8. Okay. That's right. That's right. Yeah. Well, okay. I told you he'd probably get it. Remember, I said he'd probably get it. He went a different way of doing it, but he got it. Well, no, but I explained. You explained it in a complex way. It was supposed to be a trick question. Okay. I know.
[01:05:17] I know. You know, because he took the easy route, which that's the way to go. Right. Right. Good job. Okay. Good job. Good job. Good job. Okay. All right. I told you, but remember, I said he was going to get it. Didn't I say he'd probably get it? Yeah. You did. Okay. All right. Told you. All right. Okay. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. I knew you were good.
[01:05:46] Look, I was trying to get off before you said something. I know. I know you were too slow. So, Dave, for you, we have the Culture Check question of the day sponsored by the Culture Check app. Okay. Download it on the app store now or go to culturecheckapp.com. And, Dave, normally I would read the choices, but I feel like this is too easy where I don't even need to read the choices for you.
[01:06:16] Okay. Okay. Are you ready for your question? I'm ready. Go ahead. All right. In June of 2020, Washington, D.C. Mayor Mario Bowser had which phrase painted in giant yellow letters on 16th Street near the White House? In 2020? June of 2020? Yeah.
[01:06:52] I don't know, man. I might need those. Oh, my goodness. Okay. So, A, end police brutality. B, no justice, no peace. Oh. C, black lives. Go ahead. Or D, we can't breathe.
[01:07:22] Oh, Dave, we got no justice, no peace. Um, everyone at the Department of Labor, Delaware Unions, next time you see Dave smack his black card out of his hand, he did not deserve it. Oh, Lord. Okay. Okay. We can't breathe? No. In fact- Which one was it? It doubles Black Lives Matter. Oh, Black Lives Matter. That was 2020? Yeah, that was 2020.
[01:07:51] And when she did it, they called it Black Lives Matter Plaza. And then, of course, when your president got in, I believe he, uh, uh, unpainted it. Uh, yeah, yeah. Well, see, I forgot all about that, man. I ain't gonna lie. I'll be honest with you. I forgot all about it. Okay, you got me on that one. You got me. It hasn't happened that often, so I will say it. Often enough.
[01:08:22] Often enough. Yeah, I hear you. Okay. So, Dave, that was the question of the day on culture check. Okay. So, bring one list. How many people, did you check the percentages? Uh, let me, let me even answer. I didn't answer on my own. Well, you know the answer, bro. Yeah, I know. Dave, 100% of the users got it correct. So- Well, that was, what, two or three people?
[01:08:52] Hey, it might have just been one. Who knows? Okay. All right. All right. You got me with that one. Okay. All right. Now, now I might have to go in there and be number one in another category. Okay. Yeah. We'll do it. Try it. All right. All right. I will. I will. All right, folks. Leonard got me that time. So, I know he's real happy with himself.
[01:09:20] But anyway, we want to thank everybody for taking the time for hanging out with us today. And you got anything you want to add before we get off the line here, Mr. Culture Check here? No, of course. I just want to encourage everybody to go download Culture Check. We have over 15,000 questions. And we are the ultimate test of black culture. Okay. You heard it from him.
[01:09:49] Okay. So, we will definitely check back with you guys next week. Same bad time. Same bad station. Same bad town. We appreciate you all. Have a good evening.
[01:10:06] Tune in next week, ladies and gentlemen, for another edition of News and Trends with your host, Dave and Lynn.
