Network, where we explore the haunting, unsolved cases of Black individuals
00:00:13
whose stories have been overlooked or pushed to the margins of mainstream media.
00:00:19
I'm your host, A.I. Jackson, and today we'll be diving into a chilling mystery
00:00:25
that has captivated the nation the unsolved death of Alonzo Brooks.
00:00:31
His case represents more than just a mystery.
00:00:37
It reveals the grim intersection of racial tension, violence, and systemic neglect.
00:00:44
It's been 17 years since Alonzo's body was discovered under suspicious circumstances,
00:00:50
and yet his family, his friends, and the community still wait for justice.
00:00:55
Today, we'll explore the timeline of events, the disturbing racial undertones,
00:01:02
the frustrating gaps in the investigation, and where the case stands now.
00:01:07
As always, listener discretion is advised, as this episode covers sensitive and graphic material.
00:01:14
Let's start with who Alonzo Brooks was.
00:01:17
Alonzo was born on May 19th, 1980, in Topeka, Kansas. He was one of five children,
00:01:25
raised by his mother, Maria Ramirez.
00:01:30
By all accounts, Alonzo was a kind, laid-back young man.
00:01:35
He loved to play sports, especially football, and was a loyal friend,
00:01:40
often described as quiet but quick to laugh.
00:01:44
At the age of 23, he was still living in Kansas, working and enjoying time with
00:01:50
friends. He was biracial, part black and part Mexican, and in rural Kansas,
00:01:57
that sometimes meant he stood out.
00:01:59
On the night of April 3, 2004, Alonzo attended a party with some friends in
00:02:06
La Sain, Kansas, a small, predominantly white town about an hour's drive from his home.
00:02:12
That party would be the last time Alonzo was seen alive.
00:02:16
What happened to Alonzo Brooks? And why, to this day, has no one been held accountable?
00:02:23
The night of April 3rd seemed like a typical Saturday evening for Alonzo and his friends.
00:02:28
They were looking forward to attending the party in La Cigne,
00:02:32
despite the fact that they didn't know many people there.
00:02:36
Alonzo had gone with a group of his friends, including Justin Sprague, one of his close.
00:02:43
Music.
00:02:50
Mostly white, many of whom were strangers to Alonzo and his group.
00:02:55
Reports indicate that Alonzo was one of very few, if not the only,
00:03:00
black person at the gathering.
00:03:02
Throughout the night, witnesses say that Alonzo seemed to be enjoying himself,
00:03:07
but tensions at the party began to rise.
00:03:10
Some of the white attendees were reportedly making racist remarks toward Alonzo.
00:03:16
According to witnesses, these racial tensions were palpable,
00:03:20
and some of Alonzo's friends sensed the danger.
00:03:24
One of his friends even left the party early due to the uneasy atmosphere.
00:03:29
Things took a sharp turn for the worse when Justin Sprague, the friend who had
00:03:33
driven Alonzo to the party, left early reportedly due to a misunderstanding
00:03:38
about whether Alonzo had secured another ride home.
00:03:42
Alonzo was essentially stranded. stranded, alone, and surrounded by people he
00:03:48
barely knew, many of whom didn't seem to welcome his presence.
00:03:52
This is where the story takes a grim turn.
00:03:56
By the end of the night, Alonzo was missing. His friends didn't initially panic.
00:04:02
They assumed that Alonzo had either gotten a ride back with someone else,
00:04:06
or had stayed behind, planning to return the next day.
00:04:09
But when he didn't come home and no one heard from him the following morning, panic set in.
00:04:15
Alonzo's family, along with his friends, immediately grew concerned and began searching for him.
00:04:21
His family contacted local authorities, but frustratingly, the response was
00:04:27
slow and early efforts to locate Alonzo were riddled with confusion and miscommunication.
00:04:32
In fact, it took an entire month for Alonzo's body to be discovered.
00:04:38
It wasn't the authorities who found him, it was his his own family and friends.
00:04:43
On May 1st, 2004, after weeks of searching, they discovered Alonzo's body lying
00:04:50
in a creek near the property where the party had taken place.
00:04:54
Despite multiple searches by law enforcement prior to this, somehow the creek
00:05:00
hadn't been thoroughly investigated.
00:05:03
To this day, it remains unclear why authorities were unable,
00:05:07
or perhaps unwilling, to find Alonzo's body. earlier.
00:05:14
The discovery of Alonzo Brooks' body only deepened the mystery.
00:05:19
His remains were found partially decomposed, but initial autopsy reports were inconclusive.
00:05:25
There was no clear cause of death, no visible signs of trauma,
00:05:30
no gunshot wounds, and no drowning evidence, despite his body being found near water.
00:05:36
Authorities quickly ruled out foul play, suggesting that Alonzo may have wandered
00:05:42
off and died from exposure to the elements.
00:05:45
But for those who knew Alonzo, this explanation never sat right.
00:05:50
The area where Alonzo's body was found had been searched several times before.
00:05:56
How could a team of professional investigators miss it? Did someone move his body? And if so, why?
00:06:03
These unanswered questions led Alonzo's family to suspect foul play,
00:06:09
especially given the racial dynamics of the area and the reports of racial hostility at the party.
00:06:16
Even more disturbing were the rumors circulating around town.
00:06:20
Whispers of a racially motivated murder spread like wildfire.
00:06:25
Some believed Alonzo had been the victim of a hate crime, possibly lynched and
00:06:31
later dumped in the creek.
00:06:34
Despite these rumors, no one was talking, at least, not to the authorities.
00:06:40
For years, the case remained cold. Alonzo's family, particularly his mother,
00:06:46
Maria Ramirez, never gave up hope.
00:06:49
She continued to push for answers, believing that someone in the community knew
00:06:53
what had happened to her son, but was too afraid, or too complicit, to come forward.
00:06:59
In 2019, Alonzo's case began to gain renewed attention.
00:07:04
Thanks in part to the power of social media and growing public interest in unsolved
00:07:09
cases involving black victims.
00:07:12
The Netflix series Unsolved Mysteries aired an episode about Alonzo's case in
00:07:17
July 2020, which sparked nationwide interest.
00:07:21
People across the country were outraged at the lack of justice for Alonzo and
00:07:26
the apparent failures of the initial investigation.
00:07:29
In response to this growing pressure, the FBI reopened the case in 2019,
00:07:35
and in 2021, they announced that they now considered Alonzo's death a homicide.
00:07:42
This revelation, though significant, raised even more questions.
00:07:47
What had changed in the investigation?
00:07:50
What new evidence had come to light that led authorities to officially declare
00:07:55
Alonzo's death a murder? A second autopsy was conducted on Alonzo's exhumed
00:08:01
body, and this time the results were different.
00:08:05
The medical examiner concluded that Alonzo had likely died as a result of foul
00:08:11
play, though the specifics remain undisclosed to the public.
00:08:15
The FBI has offered a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest
00:08:21
and conviction of those responsible for Alonzo's death.
00:08:25
Despite this new momentum, Alonso's case remains unsolved.
00:08:31
No arrests have been made, and the people responsible for his death are still out there.
00:08:38
Was this a racially motivated killing? Did witnesses at the party know more than they've let on?
00:08:44
Was there a cover-up, either by the community or by local authorities?
00:08:49
These are questions that still haunt Alonzo's family and everyone following the case.
00:08:56
What we do know is that Alonzo Brooks was a young man with his whole life ahead of him.
00:09:02

00:09:08
His family continues to fight for justice, refusing to let his memory fade into obscurity.
00:09:14
So, what happened to Alonzo Brooks?
00:09:17
Was it a hate crime, an accident, or something far more sinister.
