The NBG Podcast Network is thrilled to introduce our latest podcast, Unfit to Be Bound: Black History Unchained, a show dedicated to unraveling Black history's untold and overlooked stories. Hosted by the passionate and insightful Professor Freedom X. Justice, this podcast seeks to shine a light on historical figures, events, and movements that have shaped the Black experience but have often been left out of mainstream narratives.
The name of the podcast, Unfit to Be Bound, echoes the unbreakable spirit of Black history. This history is not confined by societal norms, textbooks, or forgotten over time. It stands as a testament to the resilience, strength, and determination of Black men and women who have forged paths of change despite insurmountable odds.
In each episode, Professor Freedom X. Justice dives deep into the remarkable stories of legendary Black figures, bringing history to life with vivid storytelling, meticulous research, and a profound sense of reverence. The first two episodes of the podcast kick off with two individuals who exemplify what it means to be "unchained" from society's constraints—Bessie Coleman and Robert Smalls.
Episode 1: Bessie Coleman – The Sky Was Never the Limit
In our first episode, we soar alongside Bessie Coleman, the first African American and Native American woman to earn a pilot's license. Born in a time when women of color faced unimaginable barriers, Bessie’s determination to defy the odds led her to become a trailblazer in aviation. She refused to let the confines of race or gender hold her back, traveling to France to learn to fly when no one in the U.S. would teach her.
Professor Freedom X. Justice reveals the incredible struggles Coleman faced along her journey, from the blatant racism she encountered in her pursuit of education to the challenges of gaining recognition in a male-dominated field. Through her story, we not only learn about her groundbreaking achievements but also the legacy she left behind, inspiring generations to break free from the limitations placed upon them.
Episode 2: Robert Smalls – From Slave to Civil War Hero and Congressman
The second episode takes us on an unforgettable journey through the life of Robert Smalls, a man who rose from slavery to become a Civil War hero and a U.S. Congressman. Smalls' story is one of unimaginable bravery and strategic brilliance. In a daring act of defiance, Smalls commandeered a Confederate ship, The Planter, during the Civil War and delivered it to Union forces, securing freedom for himself, his crew, and their families.
But his heroism didn’t end there. Smalls went on to serve five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, advocating for the rights of formerly enslaved people and working tirelessly to rebuild the South. This episode showcases his legacy as a fearless leader, who fought against the chains of slavery and later, the societal chains that sought to hold Black Americans back.
